It's hard not to love the FN FAL once you use it in service . For me is the 7.62 NATO rifle gold standard. I used it through my early career ('90's) in the Greek Forces (FN FAL Para was the issued rifle in Greek Special Forces , the Marine Brigade and some border battalions from early 70's till the late 90's), and I believe it is still far superior to the HK G3 that regular army units still use ... @@Tool683 The Ak203 deal has hit a bump. Some pricing issues and apparently, the rifles are a bit downgraded or something. I think Ak203 is unnecessary. For the frontline troops and for anti terror operations, if a bigger calibre is required then we can fulfil that requirement with the Sig716 rifles. Additional 72000 rifles have already been ordered which takes the total count to around 150,000. The rest of the troops should keep using 5.56 rounds. I mean 7.62 rounds have greater stopping power but the recoil and weight is much more. Improved variants of INSAS or some other indigenously developed weapons like the ones from SSS Defence can be used. I don't understand why entire army is sort of switching to 7.62 calibre. There should also be uniformity. If we use Ak203, we'd be using two different 7.62 ammos. Sig716 uses 7.62 NATO and Ak203 is 7.62 Soviet. Using 7.62 NATO for front line troops should suffice. Beautiful rifle, Larry. I miss my FAL every day since I sold it. It was just a CAI L1A1/R1A1 but it was 100% reliable and sub 2 MOA accurate, even sub 1.5 MOA with its preferred load. I paid $600 for it in 2000. I fell on hard times and had to sell it in 2008. I’ve kicked myself ever since! Love the FAL!
A couple of points. As to the comments that most FAL nations dispensed with the mag charger body cover and wooden furniture, Canada (the first country to select the FAL outside of Belgium) retained both the mag charger cover and wooden furniture through the rifle's approximately 30 years of use (1958 - 1988). We also had a winter trigger.
Yes .. and the British Army had wooden FALs up until the 1980s, although the polymer ones started to dominate in later years. Apparently the officers would covet the wooden ones!
I remember when we did a REFORGER exercise in 87 my battalion was in Luxembourg. By then I saw their soldiers carrying the later a black plastic furniture stocks or with German G-1/Dutch style metal handguards and their muzzles had the combination flash suppressors. I suspect Luxembourg just bought parts from FN Belgium, Germany, and Holland for spare parts to maintain their small army. Their country is so small in Europe that it would be the size of Las Vegas Nevada from the State Line to the Apex.

There was an alternative X8 dust cover that had an optical sight of the same design fitted to the EM2 (No.9 Mk.1) rifle that was briefly adopted prior to the selection of 7.62mm as the NATO standard cartridge.
