You have made some of Nita’s techniques very approachable! Nita Engle is THE reason I started trying to master watercolor quite a few years ago. I happened upon some of her work in the window of a frame shop in Kalamazoo and was entranced. Eventually, I did a weeklong workshop with her near Marquette, MI. It turned out to be her last workshop, although she lived a number of years afterward. She stretched full sheets of WC paper onto plywood boards and slung them around every which way, repeatedly, with a large squirt bottle to move the paint and make it do its thing. Hers was an extremely physical way of painting. I was tired just watching her! ;) The workshop was way over my head, very advanced, and yet I treasure every moment there. I found out that week that Nita was very shy and lived reclusively on the shore of Lake Superior. She bonded with my husband, who is an entomologist and birder, over nature, tramping through the woods, and doing things like canoeing, and she invited us out to her cottage. We didn’t get to go inside, but we did spend a little time walking with her. Truly an amazing artist! Thanks again for making these techniques accessible. You have made my day, as I just stumbled over this video while looking for something else. I love how you teach.
Wow thank you so much for sharing! I have saved your comment!! That must have been amazing! I was picturing it all in my mind! She really is a truly amazing artist. So pleased you liked the tutorial too and how I teach. I love her techniques as well. Thank you again 😀

@Karen Rice Art Karen, first time I have seen your channel. This is lovely. You say you removed the masking, but I did not see how. Is there a video or how you remove that available? Thank you.
I totally love Nita Engle's style of painting. I have an autographed copy of her book, How To Make a Watercolor Paint Itself. Thank you for this video!

I was sorry to see that Nita Engle had passed. I would have loved to have taken a class from her. She leaves quite a legacy. Many of today's artists' use her special techniques. Tom Lynch is one and there are several more Not everyone gives her due credit. You have, of course!
Did you Colors dry powdery? If not what brand are they. I’ve been seeing darks dry shadowy lately and it might be the Prussian, indigo or paynes grey. Not sure yet cause they combine
Wow - this looks amazing. (I used her book to limit myself re: colour choices and gave up because I didn't love the colours!). Karen, are these Schmincke paints you're using here?
Your skill and talent are very apparent. I tried it and failed horribly. The paper warped too much with so much water on it over and over again. And with so much water and paint the paper started rubbing off when I tried to do the circles. I ended up with a green blob, with smears. Obviously I need more practice.

Me too Sherry. She really has left a wonderful legacy. I love the techniques she used in watercolour! She was very generous to share them 💕
Wooooooooo. Thanks. Can we use for canavis also?
You could use the same composition 😊
Brilliant, great video. I am going to try this. You are so inspiring!!Admire Nita Engle also
Thank you so much!
This technique reminds me very much alcohol inks painting. Very Free but more controlling, 😍
I found this video fascinating. You make it look so easy. May I ask how long it took you to complete in real time?
Thank you Judith. I’m not sure of the exact time because of drying times et cetera. It took me at least 90 minutes…
Beautiful 😊💖
Thank you! 😊
Bravo, superbe 😍
Hello Karen what sort of paper you have used as you use lots of water. I’m so excited can’t wait to try it. Marie
Hi Marie, I am using 300gsm 100% cotton paper. I usually use Saunders Waterford or Arches. Hope you enjoy painting this one.
lovely 🥰🥰🥰
Did you Colors dry powdery? If not what brand are they. I’ve been seeing darks dry shadowy lately and it might be the Prussian, indigo or paynes grey. Not sure yet cause they combine
Sometimes paints do that when they are old. Prussian Blue does it also.
Fantastic❤❤❤
excellent
Many many thanks 😀
Wow, this is gorgeous but looks so hard to do.
Just build slowly Lana and protect the light! The bokeh pulls it all together at the end 😊
Wow - this looks amazing. (I used her book to limit myself re: colour choices and gave up because I didn't love the colours!). Karen, are these Schmincke paints you're using here?
Thanks Lisa... I am using W&N mostly 😀
Very Technik
Magic...I feel so bad that I can't join your membership as I can't afford it😢

Sorry you had trouble with this technique. Sometimes it depends on the paper or if the paints were staining pigments?
ok i know im to rigid. Perhaps due to botanical love; but that much water on my paper seriously freaks me out as control freak lol
I know what you mean… It can be a bit scary, but it can also be so effective and fun
😍😍😍😑
