Man, thanks for this video in 2024, i just installed this on my Nissan leaf, the all in one 5kw from vevor. Believe me ,life has been good driving in the winter. I drive Ev for the cheap motoring. You inspired me
Brilliant. Just like your glass jar, I thought you were 'Pure Nuts' to try this but have to say, what a great result. Can't wait for the next instalment :-)
for the windshield I dont think you need to add a fan, cant you just turn your car heater on so its on "fan only" mode usually by putting the temperature setting in the middle, and turning on the recirculating mode
cool setup. I'd be tempted to leave the exhaust sticking out from under the car so the hot toxic exhaust fumes can't rise up into the car although they shouldn't anyway if everything's sealed well.
I was wondering when you were going to do something like this. I seen a couple of videos of Mitsubishi i-Miev drivers doing a diesel heater in their cars to ease the cold but not eat the range of the small battery (and range) of the car. The diesel fan heater is innovative and the mounting area even moreso.
Don't worry about biodiesel. I don't know the temperature it will get down to where you live, anyway, pure diesel is easier/safer for your application. Bio can give you (more) headake. It may give you problem with slush, and for that little amount you're using, I don't think it's worth it. Looks like you fitted the filter the wrong way. On many of these, there is an arrow for the correct way of flow. The fuel should flow into the "outside" of the filter, thereby going through the filterelement from the outside and in. This way you can see how dirty it is and when it's time to change ;) Once again a great video from you :)
Another Great video! The FACT that there is no provisions for a fuel based heater in the car design demonstrates how immature the electric car design engineers really are. Here in Canada the Kiwi will never make it past the safety requirements for dashboard defrosting...
I know this is old, but the heater needs a power source, so you would be using some of your battery charge to power this. The question is, how does it affect range?
Glad to see you made a visit to US, I'm just a mile from one of the Tesla HQ's. I didn't see your style of diesel heater, I liked the fact that the tank was small compared to what else is out there. Any tips on where to purchase from or what to search?
Hi Ben! Thanks for the kind words. I'd recommend checking out Aliexpress for the heater. That's where I got mine. Coincidentally, just this moment I'm uploading a mini video.
Great Job! - How have the nuts and bolts been? I use nylon insert nuts whenever I add anything to my LEAF. I have a friend who did something similar in 2014 with his iMiev it the tank and heater Is in the engine compartment and he pipped in the heat vent through the firewall and connected it to the existing duct work. So heating the windshield and his feet was very easy to do.
Hi , made the same heater install in my I-miev and... it's works like a treat. How did you get on with the remote start? Think I may go for a 12v timer on mine. Great video by the way 😀
Definitely possible. Just be careful to keep this model of heater dry. Some folks have killed their diesel heaters from corrosion. They do make weatherproof models though.
@@KiwiEVadventures Yeah, I've also seen a model that heats up the coolant, so it will also pre-heat the engine, then the stock heating can heat the car...
I think you misunderstood, 1.5 L of diesel has about 16 Kw of 'power' contained in it (1L = ~10.7Kw) therefore, 1.5 L in the tank would last with the (2Kw) heater on full power for about 6-8 hours
Can you please tell me if you parking heater is still working. I'm thinking of buying one and using it as a parking heater for my Mitsubishi L300 camper van. I can't afford and expensive one, so I have been looking at these copies. Do you think they are a good thing or not now that you have had it a while and used it. Thank you for your help...
Yes, the parking heater has been running faultlessly every winter. It was a great investment. You just need to channel the air to the front of the car for the best effect.
Heating with electricity is pretty dumb in northern countries. While a heat pump might produce heat to the factor of 3 from the power used, it is useless at temperatures below 0°C with a factor of 1. So, while using diesel for driving only uses 40% of its energy, 100% of the energy of the diesel is used for heating. They should even include a heating only to prevent the battery from getting too cold and beeing destroyed. Also the range will be larger. Instead of diesel you also could use pure alcohol to improve the emissions which already are neclectable small.
4 years ago, but in case you havent found out yet: heatpumps can give you a factor way above one even at below zero C. The one on my house does 5.5:1 max, and still above 2:1 at -15 C.
@@GoldenCroc As a famous german politician once said: I give a sh.. on what I said 2 weeks ago ;) Yes, you are right, and meanwhile I think burning of any fuel should be avoided. However, just now, heatpumps fail dramatically in cars like the ID.3 or the Model 3. Those cars sometimes have even higher consumption with a heatpump.
Nice now you got me to thinking, i think i will try to mount a gasoline air heater and use ethanol to it, little less co2 out of exaust pipe on that, i have 60 to 80km in winter and 120km in summer on my car and sometimes i need 110km in winter i have drive 110km in winter with heater on 16c and only heat on windshield and floor and fan on speed 2 and drive 60km/h but if i have a gosoline heater maybe i can drive 110km on little higher speed and have nice and warn in the car.
Tobias Tho gas is more dangerous in regards to explosions, gas also produces more noxious gasses, also in very cold weather gas has trouble going from a liquid to a gas.
I get that. You have to keep in mind I was genuinely broke at the time and needed a solution. In retrospect I deeply regret burning those seven or eight litres of diesel and definitely won't do it again. I apologise for that, but the damage has been done. That being said, it did prove to be entertaining for many people and I learned a lot. I suppose it was certainly a video of its time and is outdated now. I'm sure you're also striving to be carbon free these days so it's a helpful reminder of how far we've come in terms of technology and what not to do.
Nice video. Why do you drive electric when combustion is such a great option? 55 miles doesn't seem like something you should have to worry about. Combustion gets great range, and fuels up in no time unlike electrics. Even teslas, and then teslas cost so much money.
It’s because combustion causes health problems and air pollution which seriously affects us. Comparing combustion to batteries, battery energy is about 80% efficient whereas combustion is about 40% on some ultra efficient Diesel engines. Combustion engines do also contribute directly to climate change with tailpipe emissions.
You inspired me to mount a diesel heater in my c zero, same type of car. You should du the same as i with refueling then you don't need to handle the diesel inside the car and just take the fueltank outside. Here it's a link ua-cam.com/video/_VEnlZPVMTk/v-deo.html Have a nice day!
This is totally ill-logical idea to install Diesel based electric heater in EV, it will create pollution. It is better if u install Silicon baesd electric heater in u r EV, which will not create pollution like Diesel one.

What a channel. Simply ingenious. I still cannot understand why I managed to miss these videos after years of EV video watching.

I like that Idea, heating up an ev is a issue that can be fixed with diesel burners.
Blasphemy aside, can it run on food oil? that's a kind of biodiesel
Here in Denmark at least, cooking oil is about the same price as diesel.

If you have to use fossil hydrocarbons, then use heating oil (kerosine). In the UK, it's a quarter of the price of road fuel diesel.
Or red diesel
nice video mate.nice job too.
Love it. Which Stereo do you have on that? Single DIN but 7 inch? Android? Native Bluetooth speakers working?!
I installed my own Diesel heater in 2018.It came from China and cost 200 €.Greetings from Hiddenhausen, Germany
did you think about a 12 volt heated motorcycle jacket?
cool setup
What kind of cd player yo have installed?
This is awesome. I was nder if I can do whatever car winter living with that thing
have you thought about veg oil mixed with methylated spirit/denatured alcohol
Why buy bio-diesel - why not just use used chip-pan oil?
Doesn't work with veg oil. does not ignite.
How many Kilowatts is the new heater ?
You could use a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy Heater.

its not good. it doesnt always burn well, it can damage diesel engine.
Look up on u tube u can make small batches of bio diesel with used vegetable oil there is a lot of information online.
Solar panel heater is better. Use a capacitor to keep stored energy
