These cuttings were not unsuccessful, just too early. The callous tissue that formed where you made your cuts and dipped into rooting hormone is the precursor to root formation. You gave up too quick. Had you have left them for a couple more months you would have been flush in roots. Try again and don't be in a hurry the next time.

I just put my cuttings in similar bottle with soil and water regularly with morning sunlight and they seem to be doing great. I'll check in one month aprox
