Thanks so much for teaming up with us on this project! We can't wait to get back to Indiana to try a few of these. We bought a Single Barrel bottle of Old 55 Bottled in Bond last time we passed through. It didn't last very long. That is stellar whiskey. And we keep hearing good things about Hard Truth. Cheers and thanks again!
Thank you guys for getting this going. This should be a fun series.
Very happy to do it, lots of fun! Thanks for the invite!
I’m from Indiana I really think Starlite and French Lick must be on this list. Then 2 MGP bottles. French Lick is cool because they are establishing their own profile. Starlite has some awesome finishing products.
Wish I could get a hold of those.
I did try to find a French Lick bottle but didn’t get lucky. I will work on a few more Indiana originals and hopefully get another video out.
@@slbdrinks for a fellow Hoosier if you need one lemme know I’ll ship it up there :)
Totally agree!
3 mgp bottles bud, if it says distilled in Lawrenceburg, it's ross and squibb😅. Starlight is fantastic and Sofl is doing great things. Alan Bishop from copper and kings is a fantastic distiller.
What a good video, I was keeping my fingers crossed while watching your video that hard truth would land somewhere. I couldn’t agree with you more about that sweet mash rye. For me, I’m about 2 hours away from their distillery and it’s such a beautiful distillery and highly recommend anyone in Nashville Indiana to stop by and experience it!
Just started watching your videos. I'm a NWI Hoosier living in NC now. I actually saw a bottle of Mattie Gladden from French Lick in a store down here so I bought it because it's from IN and I used to go to French Lick in the summers. I liked it. Also ran into some Bull breeders from Valpo a few months ago down here
I live next door to MGP. The distillery aroma is heavenly!!
Wow, I bet lol!
Great show! Also love The Bourbon Van! Phil and Julie seem like such nice people, and their shows are always fun, informative and educational. Out of all the Indiana Whiskeys you featured, I've only had the Rossville Union, and it really is one of my favorite Rye Whiskeys behind my bar (and I have quite a few). I will be on the lookout for the others you featured for sure.
Really glad you enjoyed the video and yes, the BV folks are quality people!
Great video! Glad you were able to play along with Phil and Julie's idea, great seeing your favorites in your respective states. Have an Eight & Sand, just picked up the Hard Truth over the weekend, excited to try it out. 🥃
Fantastic! Def was a good time!
I was born in Scott County, Indiana, and didn't know Indiana had distilleries, much less whiskies. I got nothing against Midwest Grain Products, but despise the folks who put a fancy label on a fancy bottle, with a fancy price and fancy story about how it's a generations old family recipe, yet its MGP filling the bottles.
Again, thank you SLB for broadening my knowledge of the good whiskies that are out there.
You got it! Good to hear from you!
Went to old 55 distillery in Newton Indiana today. Nice people and great cocktails. Maddie is a great distillery dog too.
Great video, thanks for the suggestions! The only one from Indiana I’ve tried was from West Fork Whiskey. Shouldn’t be a problem finding these in central Indiana.
Catching up on older episodes that I missed. Love you guys and The Bourbon Van. I plan to retire in 2 years and I am buying lots of bourbon while I am still working and collecting a paycheck. I am buying most of the bottles based on recommendations from your channel and other bourbon channels. I have accumulated about 100 bottles since the beginning of December 2022. Thanks for your reviews and recommendations.
Loved this show Kurt, Love seeing these bottles from your home state!
Great info on totally new to me Whiskey and Bourbon ! I'll see if I can find any of these in Canada... hope so ! Thanks again guys !
Thank you!
Glad you hit on the Hard Truth! I've been seeing it everywhere lately and hadn't really heard much about it. Have you samples any of their other offerings yet?
I have not actually. Need to do that!
My favorite Indiana rye is from Bear Wallow Distillery in Gnaw Bone. The silver label barrel proof Liar's Bench Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey 124 proof.
Thanks for this, I had a sneaking suspicion you were a Hoosier. I started watching your vids about a month ago, you do a great job. I actually used one of your lists as bourbons to try at a recent visit to a very well stocked bourbon bar-ended up buying a bottle of Russel's Reserve SB based on your recommendation and taste test. Did not disappoint! Intrigued by the Hard Truth sweet mash. I grew up about a 10 minute drive from Nashville, IN...
Super glad you enjoyed the RR single barrel!
Thanks for the heads-up on these. None of 'em I've seen in my area, but I'll keep an eye out. One non-MGP Indiana pour I'd highly recommend is Carl T. Huber, from the Starlight Distillery. 4 years old and a blend of a three and four-grain mashbills, I think it compares very favorably with Basil Hayden at a higher (94) proof point, with a distinct oiliness to the mouthfeel that reminds me of pot still Irish.
I will keep an eye out for it, thanks!
Happy to see Old 55 make the list. Their bottled in bond sweet corn bourbon is a must try, though you may need to make visit to the distillery vs finding it in a store.
I will check that one out!
Just finished my first bottle of Eight and Sand. It was wonderful! My local store is now sold out. If you see it give it a try, worth every penny.
Exactly! I love showcasing an excellent bourbon for a budget price!
Came to you through the Bourbon Van. We live in Central Indiana and have seen a couple of your episodes but did not realize you were Indiana based. Agree wholeheartedly with Old 55. Jason does some really amazing work. He is a master. Regarding Hard Truth, I have heard a lot of good things and now with your rave review, I will have to go out and find it. Have you tried Bear Wallow (also from Brown County I think)? But....as Phil and Julie know, I'm a HUGE Starlight fan and could have picked any one of six of their whiskeys to be on my top five list. In any case, thanks for doing this. I've joined as a new subscriber.
Thanks so much for joining us! I need to get into more Indiana bourbon. Along with Starlight I also am hearing there are good releases in French Lick.
Pleasure to meet you!
Bear Wallow is one of my favorites. I always snag four bottle when we go. I’ve found it locally a couple of times. We live near Kokomo. Great stuff and the owners are great to talk with.
We've been to Hard Truth Distillery and did the tour there. Very cool setup. When we did our Whiskey tastings, I tried their bourbon and I second your comments on it. Fantastic stuff. I also liked their White Rum.
Glad you liked it! I need to check out more of their products!
The way you say fantastic is just fantastic 👌
Lol thanks!
As a fellow Hosier I really enjoyed getting to see you showcase some in-state bottles! The sweet mash rye is one of my favorites and arguable my #1 rye. Starlight and West Fork (Hugh Hamer) have some amazing finished bourbons that contend with some of the best out there!
I think you missed the mark at looking at the craft side of Indiana and not one of the major distilleries. old 55 is a great start as well as hard truth. But missing on starlight, spirits of french lick, cardinal spirits, hotel tango, 3 rivers distillery, or west fork distillery is doing the viewers a disservice to what other great options are in Indiana. Ross and Squibb source for national brands so imo, I'd give mention, not 3 bottles of showcase 😉.
Unfortunately we only had a couple weeks to prepare for this show being involved with the bourbon van release date. I did try to locate several you mentioned but could not. Maybe I will try to collect some of these others and put out another video. Thanks for your input!
Great video!!! All of these look nice!!! That Rossville Union has my name on it!!! I need to find it!!! CHEERS!!!!
You will love it!
The OLD 55 Sweet Corn is hands down the BEST IN INDIANA!!!! If you havent had the Old 55 Sweet Corn you need to give it a shot (if you can find a bottle) The original Old 55 is great as well! Cheers from Lafayette
A few others from IN - I love the Straight Ryes from Bear Wallow and Starlight, and like the Rye from 18th St Distillery. Straight Bourbon from Starlight is good to great, they have a bottling or finishing for every palate. Wisconsin has a TON of Starlight single barrels or barrel projects going through. Really nice folks at Starlight and Bear Wallow too!
Thanks for the heads up!
It's always great to showcase local made products.
I totally agree about the Backbone Bourbon. It just recently got into my area and it quickly became my go to!
Great choices! Old Hamer and the Westfork products are excellent too.
Need to find more Indiana bourbons!
Although I am born in STL, Missouri and live there once again now, I spent over a dozen years in the State of Indiana, so I consider it almost my second home. This video caught my eye for that very reason AND I'm finding out that Indiana is doing some really cool things in whiskey (I'm still a pretty relative newb in the whole Bourbon Journey thing)
I liked your recommendations and will be looking out for them. But, I was a little surprised by not seeing something from Starlite on this list. A local store that I frequent a lot along with the St. Louis Bourbon Society did a Barrel Pick of the 5yr Rye which I think is delicious!
Keep up the good work. Love your content.
Thanks! Time got the best of me. Video had to be released and couldn’t find a few Indiana bottles I wanted to get on the video.
@@slbdrinks , understood, too much whiskey to drink and not enough time to drink it!
Love the video ! And seeing new whiskeys I’ve never heard of but surprised to not see Starlight on the list
I'm glad to see Backbone getting some love on UA-cam for once. The Backbone Prime is good too.
Really good stuff that’s not widely talked about!
Grabbed a bottle of the Rossville today. Distinctly MGP and you nailed it, easy to drink and doesn't disappoint!
Can’t wait to try it in my next Manhattan!
I just had some Noble Oak out of Indiana. Very good.
Had no idea you were in Indiana. I’m in Indianapolis and decided to start getting into bourbon after watching your videos for a while now. I actually bought the Hard Truth at Big Woods Speedway for $70 beginning of February. I wasn’t a huge fan of it out the gate but I think as it sits longer after opening it’s gotten better.
It is very unique that’s for sure. Give it some time, hope you eventually like it.
Bought the backbone ucuf, wow 🤩, biggest suprise in a long time, luv this bottle
Right??!! It is some surprising bourbon! Glad you like it!
Figured Remus RR V would make this list. Great list either way.
Bummer is I wasn’t aware RR was MGP.
@@slbdrinks problem is word is out on this and hard to find, sadly!
Have you had any of the West Fork Whiskey/ Old Hamer stuff? What about Hotel Tango? We are fans of the Hotel Tango rye and love the Old Hamer stuff!
No I have not. We only had a couple weeks to prepare for this show unfortunately. Maybe I will try to accumulate 5 more whiskeys that are distilled in Indiana and do one more show.
Ooh I see that Hard Truth should be at a liquor store right over the border where a bunch of my husband’s family live. It’s on my list now.
You have to try it!
Only found bottle #2 in my area. Not a store pick but I hope it is good. Thanks for this list.
You bet!
Thanks Kurt!
thanks for showing things that are not MGP. Great vid, those last two sound interesting, never have heard of a Sweet Mash.
Cheers
That sweet mash is really unique. Wish you could get your hands on a bottle, I really think you would enjoy it.
I JUST picked up that Sweet Mash Rye last week! Great minds my friend 👌🏼 🥃
Hey that’s outstanding! Let me know what you think! Take care buddy
Numbers 3, 4 and 5 are all MGP whiskeys. The other two are probably pretty darn hard to find in much of the U.S. Now, I like MGP whiskeys. Once I learned about MGP and started drinking MGP whiskey, I adopted as one of my buying strategies going into a liquor store, checking to see which were MGP whiskeys, which is pretty simple. If the bottle says it is distilled in either Lawrenceburg or just Indiana and mentions no other location, then it is MGP. And the most inexpensively priced MGP whiskey often follows me home. Not always, I buy other things too. But I see little reason to pay 150% more for one MGP whiskey versus another. Is their a different mash bill for some, yes, but the quality seems to be very consistent across the spectrum of MGP whiskeys. When I paid $17 for Ezra Brooks Rye or $19 for Rebel Yell, or more for Pepper or Templeton, all of it has been fine to sip, and none really better or worse than the other.
Oh, and MGP rye, buy it, drink it, enjoy it, always good stuff. Bourbon are nice too, but the rye, I really like.
And as the first comment here noted, I bet it does smell like heaven in parts of Lawrenceburg.
No doubt about that! You just can’t beat Indiana rye whiskey!
great video. would be interesting to see more non-mgp stuff from Indiana.
I agree! Need to dig into this subject more!
Fellow Hoosier here! Curious your thoughts on Hotel Tango bourbons? They’re popular here in Indy.
Haven’t tried any yet but I have seen them in stores.
Looks like a road trip is in order for me!
Shocked that Remus repeal 5 didn't make it over eight and sand. Also, surprised a finished starlight didn't make it. Either way, nice video.
Good thoughts. Have to be honest, I wasn’t aware RR was MGP, shame on me.
We only had 2 wks to prepare for this video so I couldn’t find some of the local bottles I wanted. Thinking about taking some time to collect and put out another IN video.
I've been going on a journey of trying every MGP Rye. It's a lot but they do make some of the best.
I agree!
It sounds like I need to get some of that Old 55 in my life! Next time I cross the border from Ohio, I'll be looking for a bottle! Cheers!
Sweet bomb! Very good
Probably won't see this comment on an old video but since you love that Hard Truth so much, were you guys able to get ahold of any of the 2022 Masters Reserve bottles they made? It was pretty limited ( I think 1800 bottles of each mash bill for the entire market? ), I'm curious because I don't see much about it yet and would like to see more info/thoughts on it. I did happen to pick up the Chocolate Malt Masters Reserve, but I'm hesitant to open it because I have high expectations for these guys to blow up in the coming years, especially with their very first release being so good. I kind of want to hold onto that one but only found one bottle. When they start getting some well aged barrels I think they will release some absolutely premium stuff and it'd be kind of cool to have a sealed bottle of their first ever masters.
I thought it said India....
This is great....Born in Evansville 1957...
Hey! Fellow Hoosier!
What an education........... Having such a good time!!!!!!
That’s what it’s all about!
My favorite Indiana is old scout barrel picks or their port cask finish
Nice! I will keep an eye out!
I would love to see you do Tennessee whiskeys (which are technically bourbons)! There are several great Tennessee whiskeys beyond Jack and George. If you can get them, I'd love to hear your expert take on them and how the upstarts compare to the two big boys! Think about it please!
I have been working on collecting Tennessee whiskeys!
Question, what are some of your favorites besides Dickel or JD?
Love the Eight and Sand.
Exactly! It really is a tasty budget bottle!
Dang, what a fun idea. I want to do this for Washington. I already know the top 5.
You should!
What about the new Rossville Union BP Rye released in 2022? It's now 7yr age stated & 117.2P.
When I first heard if MGB distilleries I contacted them about tours and if they had a Store. Sadly they don’t!.
I heard the same. That’s to bad.
No Starlight Distillery?
Not this time. Hoping to find more Indiana bottles soon!
I totally agree with hard truth. Man that is some of the best stuff.
I also live in Indiana, leaving out Starlight and French Lick is an oversight.
Unfortunately we have to purchase every bottle that is highlighted on every show. With that being said I have heard a lot about French Lick bourbon but cannot seem to locate any. Would have loved to include that from what I have heard.
I also wanted to showcase a good budget bourbon and you have that with eight and sand. That took a spot from another 60-70.00 bottle like Starlight. I do have one bottle of Starlight finished in Sherry casks but unfortunately liked the other bottles in the show better.
Valid point in your comment and I do appreciate you sharing.
Question, do you have a recommendation for your favorite French Lick bourbon?
Hard truth is amazing my second bottle of it was batch 2 first bottle was 1st batch….hard to find but really good
Exactly!
Old 55 is from Newtown not Newton. That's in my home of Fountain County, not Newton county.
I can’t believe I screwed that up. My bad.
I would have liked to have seen more non MGP Indiana whiskey l, but aside from that great video! Cheers 🍻
Me to, I need to get out there and locate more local bottles.
I live outside Indy but I’ve never tried any of these. I want to take the Hard Truth distillery tour this summer and make a trip over to Old 55.
I should do the same! Need to dig into more Indiana distilleries.
@@slbdrinks if you haven’t tried Old Hamer you should. It’s also an Indiana product and the single barrel is pretty good.
I couldn’t agree more with your Hard Truth pick! I just picked up my second bottle
Sooooo good!
@@slbdrinks beyond! And only 3 hours from my house! Cheers!
Is there one state that I can go to find Old Forester Rye? Old Forester Bourbons are found easily almost everywhere in St. Louis.
The last 2 bottles of OF rye I purchased was at their store unfortunately.
Where's The Indiana Whiskey Company love? Best wheated bourbon in Indiana!
Has anyone here tried any of the 3 Rivers Distilling Company products from Fort Wayne? I drive by it all the time but have never tried any of their products.
Have you done a Texas “bourbon”/ whiskey review? Ironroot Harbinger; Herman Marshall; Garrison Brothers Single Barrel to name three. 🥃🎉There are several poor ones as well. 😱
I did actually. You will have to check it out.
Remus!!!
So, I have to ask...are you a Boilermaker or Hoosier? Where are you located in Indiana?
I am in NW Indiana, Valparaiso. My daughter went to Purdue so I would have to say Boilermaker!
@@slbdrinks Great answer on being a Boiler, I'm a Boiler myself... and root for them always although they fell short in their tournament. Loving your tournament...keep up the great work on the channel!
I need me some hard truth in Arizona.
I wish you could get your hands on a bottle!
@@slbdrinks my brother in-law visits Indiana for work. Hoping he finds one.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! 3rd human in!!!
What’s up my brother! Darn tournament I miss seeing your comments!
Take care buddy
@@slbdrinks No worries!!! I figured you wouldn't be reading the comments so it wouldn't give away what your picks were!!! This tournament was a great idea!!! CHEERS!!!
Mmmmmm Indiana Ryes.... Mmmmmm
You know it!
A young channel that could use some love is Nathan over at EveryDay Drinker. If you are interested in helping him grow his channel go check him out. He does reviews and cocktails things like that.
Hey buddy, I would be happy to help in anyway I can. I will check him out. Have him get hold of me if he wants to.
Good to hear from you!
@@slbdrinks oh wow yeah I'll let him know I'm sure he will appreciate it. As always you guys are great love the content.
I did subscribe after your comment. When I have time I will check out his videos.
@@slbdrinks your the best!
I just picked up 3 different Indiana whiskeys this week, all from Copper Still. One is straight rye, second is straight bourbon and third is a mash whiskey with high rye count. I have only had a couple of drinks from each bottle and all taste great to me. Priced from $40-$50 each. I was surprised that none made your list. Copper Still does make very good whiskey.
Correction price was $29.99 each. So a good cheap whiskey.
I believe you! To be honest we had 2 weeks to prep for this video and just couldn’t collect some of the bottles we wanted. Never heard of Coopers though. Just might have to do one more Indiana show!
@@slbdrinks I am in AZ, got them at Total Wine here. If you ever come across them give em a try. I have never heard of that company? A new start?
Not a fan of the Remus Reserve??
I am actually! To be honest I wasn’t aware RR was MGP until I read your comment. Thanks for the eye opener.
Kurt! I just uploaded my top 5 bourbons would love for you to check it out and let me know what you think about my picks. Also I’ve heard some darn good things about that backbone bourbon from some friends. Would love to be able to eventually get my hands on a bottle
Hey buddy! Just watched your video while eating lunch. Solid picks! Where are you from by the way?
Roseville rye in an old fashion?
Hey now, that sounds pretty darn good! I am going to give it a go!
No Sinclair 4 grain?
To be truthful I have never heard of it. Obviously an Indiana whiskey?
You should have put MGP's George Remus on that list
Hey have to be honest, wasn’t aware Remus was MGP! My bad.
Old 55 at 50% that’s funny
