    I really enjoyed this video. Liked how you started off with the tools names and there uses. Learned so much that I feel if ever I had a need to do pointing that I could actually do it! Awesome job by the way!! Nice touch with the shot of the sun set. So beautiful!! Thanks! Till next time then!!

    Great work and advice. Our walls are a bit more modern (rebuilt after it was bombed in the war) it has been pointed with cement, so we need to change it! 😬

    How come your friends on Escape to the dream called you hans? Confused on your name. Can you do a video on your journey on how you decided on France etc. Why a farmhouse instead of a chateau etc? What are Tracy's skills. Etc. Basically more about you guys.

    • @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries

      Hans is his real name and Budo is his nickname 😍 why a farmhouse and not a chateau ? We did consider a chateau but decided to go for a farmhouse as we knew we could finish the renovation and have money left for quite a few years to live comfortably in france . We will be doing soon a Q & A were we will talk alot about ourselves, our journey and our plans for the future. My skills are dly painting I.e.painted furniture, soft furnishings labouring, gardening and of course now pointing all aspects of labouring 😍

      @@FrenchFarmhouseDiaries I am a new viewer, and I knew I recognized you from somewhere. Now I know where. If I remember correctly, you are working on a door and window for Tony and company! I love seeing folks from different channels working together. After a while the familiarity Kicks in, and it brings a greater sense of community even though we are in different parts of the globe (Texas, US).
      I appreciated your description of the pointing procedure and the tools used. I have seen it done many times on the channels I follow, and it is good to know the names and functions of the items in use. I think it is cool that you are using the English tools you are familiar with, but also adding French ones to your arsenal.

    As tedious as pointing must be, it seriously looks so ... classy, rich, timeless. How wonderful that people, such as yourselves are reclaiming the efforts of those of the last few hundred years.
    These UA-cam channels give me so much respect for the labourers of year's past and now, those reclaiming those efforts with their own.
    Excellent work Hans and Tracy!

    I've come over from Escape to the Dream - Restoring the Chateau, after your guest appearance. The piece on pointing was really interesting, not that I'm ever likely to do it. Just seeing the whole process, with the right tools was quite satisfying to watch. Great end result, too, by the way. Thanks for sharing. I have subscribed and will continue to follow you. Hi Guys, wow what a fantastic lesson you shared with us, It kept me focused and enthralled all the way through thank you for sharing the learning. I have a home up in Brittany, it was originally a change station for the horses and coaches and the builders start work on the outside next summer. (It has also had many incarnations over it's lifetime). It a full roof replacement over 3 buildings plus all the windows and doors plus all the lime plaster on the outside over 1 building and one wall plus having it's shutters put back on. It's going to be a full on summer for them while I'm stuck here in Melbourne working out my last month's before I retire in the spring of 23 and return to France to start work on the inside. I look forward to your learning and the sharing of your skills and would be happy to drive down/across to attend a workshop or learning weekend. With much appreciation, cheers from Melbourne Kim 😁💁‍♀️❤

    What a great tutorial, do you have any advice on how to bring the colour of the stones back out after a wall has been plastered and then the plaster removed.
    It seems to leave a very dusty colourless appearance to the stones that brushing doesn’t seem to help.

    • @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries
      @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries  Рік тому +1

      Morning Nelson when you chip out all the old pointing after you have chipped all the old plaster off, if you can then jet wash it all and scrub with a brass wire brush leave to dry then wipe it all down with a cloth before you lightly wet the joints for repointing give that ago 😉

    This was fascinating. I’ve watched a few other French restoration channels that do pointing on their walls, but I never saw anything other than the application of the lime. So I really enjoyed seeing how each step was done. My only question was how long do you need to wait between each step? Between the application, and the rubbing you seem to suggest that it was still soft. Does that mean you should wait until it completely dries to do the rubbing or you should do it when it softer. I mean, I’m never gonna do it myself, but it was a question that occurred to me as I watched. Great job!😊

    That was very interesting. We have a small interior wall covered in paint which is now becoming powder and flaking. Can we use hydrochloric acid to clean the paint from the walls as you did in another video? If we can clean the walls we will try pointing.

    • @ourllamacalmerfarminfrance239

      Looks like that much acid could be too dangerous. Wire brush probably although there might be a reason it was covered in the first place

    • @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries
      @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries  2 роки тому

      Hi Liama don't use the hydrochloric acid first try a general paint stripper first the acid is really for cleaning the cement and excess lime of use it lightly after you have cleaned the paint off the paint has gone flaky because the wall cant breath if you want to repaint any of your walls that are stone then clean them and use only lime paint with pigment if required it will glow and work in harmony with your wall all the best Budo

    Hello, I'm so glad you did this and carefully showed the tools needed. I noticed in one of your intro videos there was a building with a very big crack running down near a corner, how would you fix that? Would you put some kind of metal strapping to hold it? I ask because we have a very old stone barn or byre and it has a big crack and builders have told us different things. I can't wait to try pointing with the lime mortar, it badly needs it!

    • @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries
      @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mary don't panic these buildings have been standing for many years and they normally have very little if no foundations and are still up first thing you need to do is see how thick your walls are were the crack is then try and determine what is around that area i.e. if the roof is leaking or the gutters are missing and so on if all is good then its more then likely the building has been settling over the years i.e.to much rain or very dry years so fix any thing that looks wrong first gutters roof tiles or what ever then rake out properly the lose mortar and repoint making shore you wet first and push the mortar right to the back of the joint then leave for a year or two to see if it keeps cracking but the main thing is don't panic and enjoy your lives in France all the best Budo

    • @marymcandrew7667
      @marymcandrew7667 2 роки тому

      @@FrenchFarmhouseDiaries Thank you so much! Well we know it's missing gutters and rain is collecting too much there, my husband has been putting the huge wheelie bin under where it drips until we can dig a trench (and have gutters repaired). On our bad corner it is actually pushed out a bit and huge gaping holes inside, we could stick rocks and lime mortar back in but it 'feels' like it should be secured more.
      I really can't wait to start lime mortering, I watch videos about it all the time! Haha...been collecting tools to get ready. We also have some areas of cement that need to be removed on some walls. I love that the barn has original cobble stone floor. You know who Sir Walter Scott is? Well he actually visited this house and put his horse in that barn, many many years ago. (We're in the Scottish Borders) We really want to preserve and protect the barn and love it so much! It'll be fun watching what you both work on for sure!!

      Hi Mary its great to hear from some one like us who are passionate about restoring history and on the water issue ask your husband to drill a hole 4 inches from the top of the barrel your catching the water with and push or glue a hose pipe in and run it away from the footing then do your repairs to the gutter don't do any pointing yet wait till early summer let it all dry out first then when you come to point it fill it in with strong small stones and pack it in and the pointing try and buy lime from Buxton derby and the main thing is use 3.5 NHL a 3 to 1 mix lime being the 1 hope this helps and if you guys need any help don't hesitate to message ill try me best Budo 🙏🙏😘😘
