Shiny Lime Plaster Sealed with Olive Oil Soap

- This is a how-to for a polished lime plaster, sealed with soap, not to be mistaken for Tadelakt (a lot of the same instructions apply to Moroccan Tadelakt). This is also similar to Venetian plaster, but without the marble dust. The use of cheap and commonly available materials is what makes this finish so great and its versatility makes it suitable for wet areas, backsplashes, showers, exterior walls and so forth, especially as a final plaster on your natural home. It is a good alternative to cement plaster as it has less embodied energy and absorbs carbon dioxide in the setting process. Lime is more permeable/breathable, more flexible and less prone to cracking.
Mixes:
Base coat: 2-3 parts plaster sand, screened 1/8''-1/4'' to 1 part Type-S lime, and 1 part water or as needed.
Lime Putty: 1 part Type-S lime to 3/4 part water or as needed, use pigment for color (make sure you use a lime fast pigment).
Soap: 1 part Olive oil soap to 20 part water. The soap chemically reacts with the lime plaster, forming lime calcium soaps. Calcium soaps are insoluble in water, and fairly hard. They are familiar in areas with calcium-rich ("hard") water, as deposits in bathtubs, sinks, and showers; when soap is mixed with the water's dissolved calcium carbonate/lime, calcium soaps form. 2 C17H35COO−Na+ + Ca2+ → (C17H35COO)2Ca + 2 Na+
The timing between coats is very important, as explained below.
Substrate/existing wall should be something lime bonds to, such as any unsealed lime or cement plasters, cement board, brick, clay or earth walls. Make sure it's well keyed, such as having a texture for the lime to grip to. Using concrete bonder can help bonding and decrease wicking, giving you more time work your base coat.
Applying:
Base Coat: is applied 1/4'' thick but can be applied in two passes. It shouldn't go any thicker than 1/2'' in total. Floating is optional, the main goal here is to leave a smooth, fresh base for the putty coat.
Putty Coat: this has to be applied when the base coat is firm but still wet, which varies a lot by weather and how much the substrate is wicking water from the base coat. Typically on a hot day, out of direct sun this would take 1-2 hours. If you apply concrete bonder to your existing substrate and cover your base coat well with plastic, you can extend this window over night. This is usually preferred because the slower the lime drys the stronger it will be. The lime putty needs to applied very thin so as not to crack, you can listen to the video for how it sounds when you're spreading it thin. It is also very important to keep your trowels very clean during this step, wiping it with a rag after, as extra build up on your trowel can lead to it sticking and could pull off your putty coat. Make sure to apply on an angle, because a flat trowel will stick to the putty coat.
Soap: This step is optional as the soap is to waterproof your plaster. This also needs to be done while you're putty layer is still wet, ideally as soon as possible but dry enough so that you don't smudge your surface and your polished, shiny luster which you work so hard at. A good way to test if you're ready to soap is to wet your finger and run across the surface without it smudging the finish. Your plaster may not dry evenly so should check multiple places.
After soaping I recommend washing the wall with water. You can apply any additional masonry sealers or wax.

One of my favorite all round trowels for applying and leveling is this marshalltown amzn.to/34oaJJX
Another very good all round trowel is this 0.5mm rigid coarse Carbon Steel www.japanesetro...

Stainless-steel flexible trowels for applying your putty coat are pretty easy to find on the websites above, or on amazon: amzn.to/38L7e3t
Plastic trowels can help polish lime and bring out the gloss, and rarely leaves burn marks as compared with steel trowels

As a parent I am obviously biased when it comes to the videos being produced by my sons Benito and Kalin (aka Panther) on their UA-cam channel “The Nito Project.” I love what they’re doing, have little criticism of their work. I decided to comment on this particular video because I think it brings a simplicity to a somewhat complicated subject - lime plaster. In this video Benito shows a super simplified process of putting on a single coat of lime and following it with a lime putty (no aggregate) - two colors. So what you get is a look that mimics what most people search for with tadelakt in a lot less time, you don’t need special stones. Questions you might have - do you need olive oil soap? As for sealing the plaster many soaps will work, for years in Mexico we used common bars of a yellow soap in combination with alum to seal walls from water. After all the black soap or olive oil soap is simply nothing more than a household soap. Pure olive oil is often used in Italy, ghee in India, the use of natural oils to seal plaster is something with a great deal of history behind it. For the moment, I think that’s enough.
These videos are the very best. I forward them all over - even to people who don't care about mud. In this case I have a specific question as to what exactly you mean by alum, as it has many different meanings as various aluminum salts. I am thinking you mean potassium aluminium sulfate, but if you could make that clear, it would be very helpful! Any chance the Nito Project is not too far from Guadalajara or Mexico City? Thank you again!
@@nobreighner I have only known it as alum whether buying it from a hardware store in Mexico "alumbre" or from a pharmacy for brushing teeth or antiseptic. We are based in Arizona with no current work scheduled in Mexico. Benito has a workshop at Rancho Mastatal in Costa Rica later in the spring.
@@canelochronicles Yes, alumbre is typically potassium alum - thank you!
How is alum used in sealing plaster??
I'm also be interested in any pointers you may have for making black soap. When I look it up, it says that it's olive oil soap. When I look that up, it says it's castile soap. When I loo *that* up, it says to use KOH instead of NaOH, but that doesn't jive with my understanding of the lime-soap chemistry. Thanks! (I adore these videos, btw)
@@boingochelsea I can't say why. But an apparently vapor-permeable and waterproof cladding that does not crack or burn - and looks beautiful - certainly has appeal.
I like this. No speaking, just music, some guiding text, and skillful workmanship.
Who are the 15 chumps that dislike this video? Pure craftsman capturing his techniques on video and sharing! What’s not to enjoy?
Becasue its not proper polished plaster, would cause damage in an old property and undercuts actual craftsmen.

@@acs5996 well you aren't supposed to seal lime plaster, it defeats the whole point of it. Use a nice simple lime wash.

Your videos are wonderfull! Im a contractor and finished number of venetian plaster projects and this video answered some questions I had about qadad, tadelakt !
Thank You!
I've been fascinated with tadelakt and lime for the longest time ever. Now that we're building a resort, I'm eager to inculcate this or tadelakt in our project.
Have you tried exactly this technique? Any tips on tadelakt or lime plaster? We're building on the mountains where it snows as well.
Biggest question though, CAN WE APPLY TADELAKT ON FLYASH BLOCK WALLS? I've had mixed answers to this from the limited tadelakt-experienced people I have talked to. Some say the flyash blocks are prone to cracks as well as tadelakt. So their combination may result in early cracks. Some say that the surface isn't suitable/coarse enough for the natural plaster to adhere to.
I'm sorry for the questions. Any insight will help
You guys are so freaking awesome. We are doing several projects this summer and you taught me so much in such a short time. I've been a sculptor and oil painter for over 50 years and work with our local earths in the Pacific Northwest. These beautiful films you make capture the feel and depth of the surface more than anything else ever. Thanks beyond words.
I love this film for it’s beauty and simplicity. I’ve just finished my second Tadelakt course, an Italian version but not as good as the Moroccan style, so it’s great to see what can be achieved using the rawest of materials and the gradual build up of layers to create a sublime finish.
I have been fascinated with tadekalt for the longest time. Now that we are building a resort, I want to inculcate tadelakt or this technique of lime plaster. But there aren't budget resources in the part of India we're building in.
What course did you take? I'm confused about the type of materials it needs and whether they'll be available locally.

This is gold!! God bless you man! I was looking for a cheap but good Tadelakt alternative for so long.
I had a go at this, it went okay but had to give up as it was drying inconsistently and cracking in places, so took it off. The soaping process is very hard to get right also, as in there is a very narrow window in which to apply the soap. It's *very* difficult to get right. He makes it look effortless, but it wrinkles, it cracks, can't really be sponged or "reset". What you're seeing in this video is the work of a master at his craft. You can cheat a bit with white cement,
for the base made with 1:1 sand, lime and about 1:10 cement to sand/lime, that was beautiful to work with and too could pick up a gloss. The real problems came using the lime putty.
My other problem was getting nice colours. Our lime here is beige and getting white sand or marble dust isn't really possible. I've used lime wash many times before and am familiar with hydrating quicklime and that comes out very white and was wondering if that would not be better for making a putty than commercial hydraulic lime? We also use linseed oil in the limewash here, I'm guessing for the same reason as the soap I guess: could it be used as an alternative to soap?
Your description is perfect thank you so so much I've learn more in this video on trowel work than I have accumulated so far in my life I had a lightbulb moments and then read the commentary below and had an other. I'm going to watch this one a few more time thank you again!
