Sidechaining my Euorrack voices with this technique and it's AMAZING. Not doing it with Thru tracks, but sending out inverted envelopes via Octatrack to duck the VCA
I'm about to buy an Octatrack so I've been researching everything its capable of. This is like the 5th time you've had a video for exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks for the hard work man
Thank you for this. I had spent almost 2 days setting the filter effect to R+T on the amp page, setting my trigless trigs, then trying to find the sweet spot from within the filter settings to do sidechaining. After following this advice I was able to get what I wanted instantly.
I don't know why, but apparently I can only convert P-Locks into trigless trigs by pressing Trig + No instead of Trig + Yes, as it is indicated in the manual and your tutorial. Great tutorial though!
You could also not use trigless trigs and just use an LFO instead. Use an inverted square wave. Set the parameter to " amp vol", Set the trig to "sync trig", Mult to "16x", Spd to "32" Depth to taste. This way is pretty cool as well. Thanks!
This is true but I don't think it sounds as clean in my opinion, plus I am not particular to square waves for ducking envelopes. I did mention setting the envelope to reduce volume but that can and often does create clicks and pops during playback, which is why I chose the filter.
Hold trig and press no and not yes after the newest firmware. Don't want to do it yourself? I got you covered. Project file located here www.patreon.com/ezbot
This is a really good idea thank you for the tip. One thing I realized is, I have to press the trigless lock and "no" (!!!) not "yes" to turn it in a trigless trig. Took me about half an hour to get my head around that. Weird. Is this due to a incosistency in my machine or was there an update or what? It is stated in the manual either. You have to press the trigless lock + "no". Thank´s for your input instead. Good idea with the filter width, much smoother then.
Doesn’t it make more sense to adjust base and not width? Because base removes low frequencies, and if you modify width - sure, the signal gain is lower, but all the low frequencies and mud open up earlier than upper clean frequencies
Great videos, excellent content and awesome production value. You clearly know your stuff and work hard on this content. Thank you! On my side, I've had the OT for years (I have MK1 and MK2), and while I've learned a great deal on how to actually use them, I haven't quite figured out what to use them for. I can't do a full track on them, haven't made that leap. Very diff from MPC Live which I've done full tracks on no problem. OT is amazing for mangling and making loops, but moving from a set of loops into an actual coherent / completed work that flows and is arranged, this hasn't clicked for me. For now I use it to make those loops and patterns I'd never come up with otherwise, sample into Ableton, and do the rest of it there. Is there any of your content, or anyone else, that can help people like me bridge the gap?
That is a good idea for a video I think. Here's a quick tip: copy and paste the same pattern a few times - than make alterations to each of the copies. You can do that in minutes. Than try and perform the song, taking different elements in and out as you progress across those patterns, record that performance: You finished a track.
Yeah its good solution for input track(with FX), and kick drum from other channel / or kick drum from octatrack. But if you create all track in octatrack (with FX / transients) - its dificult to make it. I hate manipulate FX like delay / reverb in octatrack - its imposible to create pump effect ;)
for some reason when i do this i need the LFO speed to be 16 for the filter to dip on every beat whereas you have it set to 4 and it dips on every beat. Weird
say both will have 20% chance - I'm not sure it implies that they will be synchronized. I will try to copy the whole pattern and see. thanks Matthew you're a good guy
Well the Octatrack doesn’t have an envelope follower or the ability to actually sidechain, just for reference. Envelope follower will track the dynamics of a signal and you can use the data to modulate another destination. Sidechain is similar to that as it uses another signal to to control the dynamics of the compressor. If you sidechain a kick into bus compressor that is on your pads and leads bus it will create a ducking effect on that bus that sounds rather pleasant.
If you only hold function than you wont trigger the LFO or other envelopes. It will just be a trigless lock. That is deference between the dark green and the bright green

Thanks for making your video short and brief. Other famous bloggers would explain same amount of info during 2 hour stream.
I appreciate you saying that!
Ok but for real though you’re the bob ross of the Octatrack. I don’t think I’m alone in that assessment.
lol, thanks
I am just realizing that we can trig everything through LFO's in that mode haha. What a powerful machine!c Tnank you for your content EZBOT

I got you homie :)
You are invaluable! Instead of Yes I have to use No to create triples trigs.
Update changed a few things post video release

Love to hear it!
Nice! Trigless trigs? What!? This tutorial was enlightening for sure. Thanks for another great one! 👍👍
Absolutely! You got it dude!
You're the best, EZBOT!
Thank you. I watch your videos all the time . Exploring something new with the OT .
These videos are priceless as I just snagged an OT a month ago. Thanks for the content and inspiration!
Thank you so much and congratulations on your Octatrack purchase!
EZBOT as just a hobbyist, I cycle through a lot of gear. I have a few “never sell” pieces of gear, this very quickly fell into that category...
@@MDWeezer Indeed, its a never ever ever sell!
you make this kind of thing look effortless!
Wow that’s pretty simple compared to what I anticipated. Thanks for this!
Yeah, right? Pretty cool
Oh nice. Using the amplitude via an LFO always sounded weird for me. Thanks for the fix, man!
Right!? Glad you like it!
thanks, i'll try that, because this setup with volume makes ugly clicks...
Very clear explanations. I like your style.
Thank you!

this worked for me as well. Trig + Yes did not do anything
Same here. What’s up with that @ezbot?
same
for me aswell 😅
Same with me. Only after hours of trying to figure it out did I come across this comment. Thank you!
Thank you !
good idea with the filter!
Thanks!
Oh damn. I bought a hardware compressor to do this. Thanks for making me realise i wasted my money. Lol. Great tip. Thanks for sharing.
Which one did you get? 🤩
@@EZBOT_ Just a cheapish DBX. Maybe ill start using it as an actual compressor rather than just for sidechain 😀
@@SPROCKET23 That might work, you could use it on your bass synth! I like to do that
omg you saved my life!!!!
Hahaha, that is good news!
still missing an input for sidechaining in the octatrack compressor.

Yeah they changed it after the update that added FUNC + Yes to audition
nice was using amp will try this
Doesn’t it make more sense to adjust base and not width? Because base removes low frequencies, and if you modify width - sure, the signal gain is lower, but all the low frequencies and mud open up earlier than upper clean frequencies
Try it, I don’t think it sounds as good
Ok so for some reason my mki uses No instead of Yes for trigless trigs. I live in crazy land.
Due to a firmware change a few months after I made this video. Mine is that way now too
cool ! THX
Matt - is sidechain pumping already in your Oct Perf Template? If not, can we do sidechain pumping AND run the template? Or is it either / or?

thanks 🎉

Yep, you are right it can be tough that way, but it's not bad if the filter is your on a neighbor track
for some reason when i do this i need the LFO speed to be 16 for the filter to dip on every beat whereas you have it set to 4 and it dips on every beat. Weird

what if you have a conditional trig on the kick drum. How to sync it whenever it fires?
Give the duck trigger the same condition

what's the difference between sidechain and envelope follower?

You fucking rule man!!!
trigless trig: on my octatrack i have to push 'no' in order to get it bright green. Push 'yes' does nothing, leaves it half grreen. Something wrong?
They changed it to press “no” in a firmware update after tires video
@@EZBOT_ smart, thanks for feedback.. before i go crazy with this octatrack.
👍
oh, yes! oh, yes!

How can you accomplish the same thing with an internal bass track? Same procedure?
Absolutely
