Damn, when I saw they tackling "Moanin'" I was "oh that poor girl on bass!" But she absolutely slayed it! That's a TOUGH tune to play at high intensity on the double bass for 9min! Arrangement for the ensemble was pretty true to Charles' studio version, just wish the audio recording was a little better. But mad props to the bari sax and bass players! Wish I was a quarter that good in high school!
I was thinking what High School Band is that good. Then I looked again. Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra are probably the best High School students in NYC.
There are two Moanin versions, one by Bobby Timmons and one by Mingus. This is the Mingus one, from this album en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_%26_Roots.
@@FeldmanJazz I mean : Bobby Timmons is the composer of Moanin'. Mingus wrote an arrangement of this tune, of course. But the tune played here, is not Moanin' but "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting". Hear the original version of Moanin recorded by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers to hear the difference between the two tunes.
@@philippeghyssens3527 the songs are different. Different composers, not an arrangement. You don’t believe me, get the sheet music here www.halleonard.com/product/7010238/moanin :-)
@@FeldmanJazz I didn't know that two composers could deposit a tune with the same title. Apparently nobody talks about this oddity, neither Leonard Feather nor Scott Yanow, for example. Especially since the two compositions were written almost at the same time, 58-59 for Timmons, 59 for Mingus.
i get this is a high school band, but where mingus was one of the masters of organized chaos this performance lacks cohesion in places. still, props to the effort; this ain't an easy piece to pull off even for seasoned musicians.
Glad to see the vocal adlibs included in the intro… truly a crucial element of the composition

Moanin is a tune by Bobby Timmons, not by Mingus. But this is really a tune by Mingus : it's "wednesday night prayer meeting" not Moanin.😊😇
