It's so cool to see Patrick Bartley and Russel Hall performing then vs now. Crazy how good they were then and how much better they've gotten since then. From great to amazing!
The group at TJI from 2013-2018 + Doug Tidaback (director) was unreal. I was in one of the lower bands at the time and it was amazing just to be that close and watch/listen to them everyday
I am glad someone recognized this. I am just a 20 year old from California but I am so fascinated by TJI's dominance at this competition during those years, escpically their 2013 group which was imo one of the best. Wish I could have been in your shoes and seen them live. Btw do you know what happened to the director?

Personally, I would've loved to see Max Goldschmid, Griffin Ross, Santosh Sharma, BreAnna DeNure, Teddy McGraw, Philip Norris, and Anthony Hervey. But it's hard to pick 25 solos, so overall good list!
12:06 - Coleman Hughes, trombone solo on Royal Garden Blues is amazing! And a clear example of what can be done with some good technique, a good upper range and the good ‘ole blues scale. Worthy of transcription.

was watching this video in hopes to see a couple people I know like aubrey martin and owen broder and was very suprised to see patrick bartley in an essentially ellington band
Good grief! What an inspiration. When I was first learning to play jazz (still learning!) in high school, compared to these kids, I could hardly tie my shoes! Wowser!!

12:50 Another trombone solo, this time by Sam Chess in Symphony in Riffs. Great use of sequences, and a familiar quote at the end (Isn’t She Lovely - Stevie Wonder).
Way late to the comments and this may never be seen… but I grew up with Sam in AZ and we decided to both play the trombone in 5th grade. After being second chair behind Sam from 5th-9th grade I decided to call it quits. All these years later combined with a better appreciation of his greatness, I find comfort in knowing I wasn’t delusional for thinking he was miles ahead of me 😂
RIP Aubrey Martin, that kid could PLAY!!!
sorry if im late but what happened to him?
Vern Google says he passed in 2018. How sad that we lost such young talent...
I believe he committed suicide unfortunately
Indeed. One of my closest friends and a big reason why I started learning to play
@@benstowers9547 it is so sad to see this comment now. I hope that you and aubrey are playing through some tunes together now. ):

I love at 13:20 when the trombone soloist does a motif/lick to "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder.
