Couldn’t you just use the Kupo to tripod plate adapter (minus the tightening knob) directly into the junior receiver? That would remove the need for the junior pin to baby pin adapter and create less potential wobble points. Just sayin’/asking.
Hey Tom. Instead of plugging that baby pin right up in there 😂 you could replace it with the Kupo adaptor by remove the scare from the kupo and plugging it in that same hole . It will make your set yo more lower and centered. Let me know if you prefer it
Dude, you always amaze me at how kind you are showing all of us your setup and your jokes because im here for those too. Not everyone is willing to share their knowledge on they shoot video for youtube and have a very nice look to it. You are awesome, Tom. 😎👊

Hey Tom, that lowboy is exactly what I've been looking for! I love the Neewer rolling stands but, as you said, they're too high. Can't seem to find the one you have here in Europe but found an identical one from Manfrotto. Thanks!!
Thanks, Tom. I’ve learnt so much from you over these past few years. (I was immediately drawn to another creator who loves blue! 🙂) You are without a doubt the best source of advice on YT equipment and studio design.
I have both a OWC Thunderbolt Hub and a CalDigit Element Thunderbolt 4 hub and the Elgato Prompter works fine plugged directly into it. YMMV (USB power hubs, nope, but Thunderbolt yes)
I have the CalDigit TS4 and I run 2 4K monitors, stream deck+, Elgato hd60x capture card, USB microphone and prompter with one thunderbolt 4 cable to the MacBook for hours, no problem.

I love this. I tried to match settings between the a7SIII and ZV1F, but the big full frame camera vs. a small sensor being moved a lot doesn't always look identical. Time stamps noted 😅
Not sure if most people got the joke about the official name for the jr pin to baby pin adapter but that was hilarious. "We'll just plug that right up in there." lol
That iFootage quick release system is super slick! Is that what you use to mount your mics on the wall too? I’ve been using the similarly “pro” priced, but bulkier Triad Orbit quick release adapters, which don’t include the nifty locator pins. I also found a couple of the Manfrotto pistol grip rolling stands on Facebook marketplace for unbelievably cheap. I remove the top piece to get the same “low boy” height, and I can slide multiple pistol grips to hold various elements of my setups, including lights and a laptop tray when I want. I need to do a video of my latest setup…
It's a good setup for you clearly. Two things if you ever notice and noise on the XLR it that cheap 90 you have best to get a cable with that build in. 2nd I see if I can find it but I seen a rosette to Arri pin adapter that would allow you to connect your Spider Crab into a Arri pin so it's completely stable! I love seeing people setup you always learn something new and useful! -- Oh and I starting a iFootage support group I'm up to 11 Sprider Crabs they are so good...
Great video Tom, I’m building a small studio in my apartment and your videos have helped me a lot. Just a suggestion you can can also use the prompter as a monitor as well.
Hope your studio is coming along nicely! The prompter works great as a monitor, sometimes I don't have it connected to my computer, or I prefer to use just the script without the monitor overlay. It just kinda varies from video to video.
It is! It's a small iFootage Cobra 2 monopod/stand: amzn.to/3PYlUDy I have an iFootage tripod head on it, but it'll work with any tripod head (I like this one because it work with Manfrotto plates). So far it's been really nice- I'd love to figure out an articulating air of some sort, but this stand can support my camera and prompter no problem, and doesn't take up much space.
I love this. I have 80% of the gear and accessories you used for this. I’m going to replicate this in my small studio. I’ll DM you some photos when I complete it.
Everything from the tripod head down will be perfect for my setup. Thank you for this video. I 100% agree with a high quality tripod head. I learned that years ago when I was heavy into photography. Great video.
I’d recommend exploring the Neutrik angle connectors instead of adapters. I used to think that you need to do soldering to replace connectors, but you don’t! It’s quite easy to do and the result is lighter and compact, compared to the adapter. Though it might not be cheaper 😅
it would be really interesting to see a similar setup but geared towards a phone-based recording setup (or just a level down in terms of budget). Glad you mentioned why the lights we not on single stand, but would be interesting ot hear a bit more about how your lighting system works in conjunction with this setup.
My Elgato Teleprompter arrived 2 days ago and I've been thinking about how to set it up with the camera, mic, light & monitor. Great food for thought. Thanks Tom.
It's been fun reading your comments about your prompter journey! Hope you enjoy it! I'm quickly approaching 1 year with mine and I still absolutely love it. Definitely an essential part of my workflow.
That's a cool rig! I'm a big fan of the extendable arms and super clamps from Manfrotto for this kinda use-case - I have a somewhat similar rig but everything's clamped to my light's C-stand. Great for decoupling the camera from the desk, though not as portable as your setup 😅 If I had a bit more space I'd definitely be looking at that rolling stand.
I was literally just looking at lighting stands/camera stands to use instead of a tripod 2 days ago. I'm only 1 min into the video and I'm hyped already 😂 - subscribed ♥
Hope this helps! The "low boy" is a great option if you do a lot of sitting videos, and the regular rolling stand is good for standing/high angles (the low boy can be adjusted to standing though too).
7:50 The Sony g master 24mm frustrations are so real 😭 mine is currently at the service shop for the second time in warranty for issues with the focus motor
Nice video and thanks for showing what is "behind the scenes". That is indeed very helpful. I must say you're really blue color person, I like that ;-)
Hey Tom, thanks again for this video! I've watched it again, and convinced me to build something similar. Although it costed a lot, but I'm excited for the orders to arrive and finally put everything together. One thing that I'm not sure if you're considered, especially because you use Elgato teleprompter, is to have a support for the lens. My lens (Tamron 28-75mm f2.8) is longer and I got the SMALLRIG 15mm Long Lens Support Bracket. I've also got the Manfrotto 502 Fluid instead of the one you use mainly because of the price. But to be honest, 502 seems sturdy enough. Anyway, thanks again 🙏
So happy to hear this! Thanks for the lens support recommendation too. My 24mm is fine, but if I ever were to added a longer lens (like your 27-75) it'd probably be a smart thing to have!
There are definitely some cheaper alternatives! Especially for the mic, camera, and lens (Audio Technica AT897, Sony ZV-E10, Sigma 16mm 1.4 for example).
I don't have much to be honest. Most of it is the carpet and objects in the room, but I've experimented with a lot of different things and what I've kind of landed on for the past few years has been: •Sound blanket covering window. It's behind the paper backdrop. I never use the window, so I covered it with a sound blanket to block out sound and light and then hung the backdrop in front of it. •I have a 2' x 4' sound panel from Acoustimac.com on the wall that I face (it's actually on a closet door so I can slide it around a bit). •I have another Acoustimac panel on the ceiling directly above me. I noticed sound was bouncing from the wall and reflecting off the ceiling, so these two panels helped a lot.
Crazy timing- I was just thinking about this yesterday. I have a workflow video from several years ago, but it’s probably worth updating, so that’s something I want to do soon!
Great video, Tom! I am really digging the Lowboy. I currently use a short stand that sits on my desk, but that also really limits which lens I can use in my GH5 because of the relatively short distance. I am going to have to check that out. I am guessing from your comments in the video that the higher stand would be capable of being set up the same way if I was looking to use that for fixed secondary cameras on a shoot (and reducing the footprint from all of those tripod legs. Is that correct? Thanks for continuing to educate us!
It's been great! The mounting and everything is the same between the tall/short stands, so it's really just the height and the tall one I have doesn't have a built in baby pin.
Looks a LOT like my setup, however I have been wanting to figure out an overhead booming solution for a shotgun mic.. what type of arm is that holding the rode mic go ii? *edit* iFootage Support Rod.. cool. Awesome informative video as always!
How have you gotten the Elgato Prompter's ring mount to work with your lens? According to the Elgato manual, the ring mount isn't compatible with motorized lenses. When I try it with my Canon EOS R (and Canon lenses), I immediately get a lens error as soon as the lens tries to move with the prompter hanging off of it. I've tried with several Canon lenses. It seems you're not having this problem, though. Any ideas?
It depends on the lens- if the ens has internal focusing it's no problem, but if the end of the lens rotates when it focuses, then it's an issue. Fortunately my Sony lens is all internal.
@@tombuck Thank you! I take it you don't have to turn off autofocus, then. Do you know if it's generally the case that Canon lenses rotate while focusing? I'm not sure how to identify which lenses do that without trying them in person (and I only have 4).
Hello, I know you can’t always reply to technical queries, but I would like to know why you highly recommend the Manfrotto fluid video head. There are many people on Amazon that have given it one star reviews, asserting that it’s cheap and has broken on them after limited use. I’m no expert, I’m just a newbie seeking to purchase the right setup.
Hmm, that's interesting. I've used many many Manfrotto heads since 2011 and have never had one break, so they're just kind of always my top choice. I like the mounting plate too because it's so secure. I do have a few iFootage heads that take Manfrotto style plates, and I like those quite a bit. But for anything heavy duty I've just always gone with Manfrotto 🤷🏻♂️
Great setup as always… the one thing i was disappointed from is the elgato prompter that only function with computer.. at least if they gave an option for bluetooth connection or wire with ipad to make it more mobile
I think that's a tricky one. I definitely get it- but at least for now, having the whole thing run via one simple cable is fantastic. I don't think a tablet could power the prompter, so they would then need a separate power supply, which in my experience is always annoying. Although...now that I think about it, having a second USB C port just for optional power could be neat. It's there if you want it, but not required.
It’s such a great camera! I initially wanted a second a7SIII body because it’s easier when things are the same, but it was back in 2021 when everything was out of stock, so I found one new FX3 for sale in the entire U.S. and got it. I’m so glad I did because it’s really been a terrific camera. The screen leaves a bit to be desired, but beyond that, it’s the best.
@TomBuck I want to duplicate this setup with one change: I need a longer boom arm for mic as I’ll be using this standing up at a greater distance from camera. However, I’m struggling to figure out what connectors I need for the boom. Any advice/guidance? (I’m happy to purchase all with your affiliate links if that would help…I’ll even buy you a cup of coffee…I just need help). 🙌🏻
You have a little redundancy there. You can remove the butt plug and stick the tripod mount straight into the junior receiver. Just take out the set screw. That’s actually how that’s piece is supposed to be used. Nice rig!
Hello, I am looking for speakers that support the Focusrite Vocaster Two USB-C. I have a very important question: do I need the Focusrite Vocaster Two, or can I buy the first one? I wanted to share with you the equipment I am using for my UA-cam channel and the items I'm planning to purchase. I started with an iPhone 11, then upgraded to the S24 and later to the Canon T100. However, the camera broke, so I switched to the Canon 50 Mark 2, which is what I'm currently using. My friend bought a cable, the XLR, and now I need to purchase the Focusrite Vocaster Two USB-C, followed by the Elgato Stream Deck Mini. The Stream Deck Mini helps me control Zoom, Teams, PowerPoint, MS Office, and more. It's compatible with both Mac and PC and makes setting up shortcuts easy. I would appreciate your thoughts on these items. Additionally, I just wanted to mention that I find your videos really entertaining, and even though I start coughing because I have asthma, I can't help but laugh out loud. I admire your work, and while I'm currently focused on gaming content, I aspire to create videos like yours in the future. Thank you for the advice, and have a great day. I'm a regular viewer of your videos and your live streams.
Enjoyed the video. Missing, however, is how you are able to both use the external monitor (via hdmi port out of the FX3) and yet still 'stream' (for example using Ecamm Live -- as you've taken the only hdmi port out from the FX3 for the external monitor).
It doesn’t seem any different than any normal tripod base, so I wouldn’t worry. Kupo is a pretty standard name when it comes to grip gear and have been making this stuff for a loooooong time.
@tombuck heard it from a guy in his 60s...back in the 90s...so...I am sure it's still relevant and hip. As for my setup...yeah...it is a mess...but planning on some sorylt of cleanup in the future. I may get one of them rolling tripods
Anyone have a suggestion to a reasonable alternative to the camera head that would offer the same versatile ability with the i footage arms and such? Great info, beefy setup that would last for sure
@@tombuck thank you. Kudos, one thing that stands out to me about you is your willingness to stay connected to the audience. Says a lot and sets you apart in my opinion. Keep being awesome!
But how do you connect the prompter on this moving rode to your mac? I purchased the prompter as well, my problem - I am to close on my desk to the prompter and everybody can see my eyes moving, which is bad :/ So I stopped using it for now :/
I watched your video about MKH 50. Now I got one finally. The problem is Rode Caster Pro (1) can not give it enough power to have the sound comes out even I had the volume up to the top. Can you give me some advices on this? I've been using it with Rode NTG5 and never have any issues like this.
@@tombuck One more thing if I could ask Tom. I also use FX3 for main camera. But I did not do UA-cam I only use it for Zoom meeting. I been having a problem of how to get the picture and the sound synced. It is a delay with my mount and the sound when see in Zoom but it looks totally ok on Camera or on the switcher’s screen. But people watching from computers see the delay. I think it might be about the setting on camera like the frame rate or something. Yet I still can not fix it. Could you kindly give me some advices how to fix this! Thank you so much!
The FX30 is the same size as my FX3, so I would. The Manfrotto 501 is also a good option, it's a little smaller and cheaper but still has some additional mounting points. The 504 has just been absolutely phenomenal for me though, and I love never having to worry about it being able to support anything.
@@tombuck I though it was, they're usually pretty good at making it like adult lego. Sorry I didn't want to be a know it all. Great setup, got some really useful takeaways too!
Just wonder regarding the stand is that the same as Kupo 370M ? We don't have Impact here, so looking for closest analogue. Or maybe someone knows original manufacturer in China...
@@tombuck Maybe, but Kupo costs more. My gut filling says that all of them are made by uncle Lao form China on the bare same plant. Just fyi, Manfrotto actually has nearby(exactly) the same stand Manfrotto Avenger A5012 maybe this is the original which has 'inspired' everyone else.
Yep. I mainly use bullet points for my videos, so I just had the Notes app open on a monitor next to the camera, but the Prompter makes it much easier to keep my place, which speeds up the whole process. It's also absolutely incredible for video calls!
Well, There's something I want to share about. I made a low cast camcorder rig that I ever made, It's really simple. I have a mini wireless mic set (Comica Boom X-D2 here in this case) and I have an idea that I'm going to put it on an elastic band on the battery. (An InfoLitihum V battery) How I did it? Well, It's simple. I put an elastic band on a camcorder battery and clipped a wireless receiver onto the elastic band and that's it, I can control an audio gain from there and I even got 2 audio monitor jacks. (From both my camcorder for more accurate playback and a wireless receiver's monitor audio jack for a real time audio playback. 😁) The mics are, Well. I could either choose one for a lav mic or a boom mic. (It depends on a setup, I can't really tell) There's a video on my UA-cam Channel that I’ve covered about so you can go check that out if you want. =)
Couldn’t you just use the Kupo to tripod plate adapter (minus the tightening knob) directly into the junior receiver? That would remove the need for the junior pin to baby pin adapter and create less potential wobble points.

Love your videos Tom, another great one here! Man I want to try out that FX3, maybe I'll go rent one
Nice rig!
Hello,
I am looking for speakers that support the Focusrite Vocaster Two USB-C.
Loved seeing a breakdown of your setup! Thanks for the video!
Out of curiosity, do you think you'll check out the Shure MV7+?
I’m not Shure 😁
I’d like to and it seems quite awesome for what I’ve heard.
Like before watching ❤❤
Enjoyed the video. Missing, however, is how you are able to both use the external monitor (via hdmi port out of the FX3) and yet still 'stream' (for example using Ecamm Live -- as you've taken the only hdmi port out from the FX3 for the external monitor).
If I'm running to Ecamm then I don't use the monitor
The only thing that would make me nervous is that 3/8 thread on the kupo adapter whether it can hold all that weight on top of it and not break.
It doesn’t seem any different than any normal tripod base, so I wouldn’t worry. Kupo is a pretty standard name when it comes to grip gear and have been making this stuff for a loooooong time.
UA-cam setup goals...my setup is a bloody dogs breakfast in comparison...lol
Haha, that's not true at all! But I love the term "dog's breakfast."
@tombuck heard it from a guy in his 60s...back in the 90s...so...I am sure it's still relevant and hip.
As for my setup...yeah...it is a mess...but planning on some sorylt of cleanup in the future.
I may get one of them rolling tripods
So, you use EQ in post-production? (Since your mic is plugged directly into the camera.) In Final Cut Pro?
I usually do a little bit in Final Cut but the natural sound of the Sennheiser gets me like 95% there. 👍
Great Video - but how do you see on your computer what you film at the same time? Thanks
17:02 BTW Sony's dummy batteries are crap - I use the small rig dummy battery for my ZV-E1and it works like a charm
Thanks for this video. Really gives some good ideas 👍🏿
Can you do a video with a iPhone 15 pro max setup? With an audio interface, shotgun mic and external monitor.
I don't have the iPhone 15 myself, but I can experiment and see what I find.
4:39 it's not called anything else but we are gonna just plug that right in there
hey tom. can you tell me what brand metal drawers you have? like the red one in the background? I am looking to buy some.
They’re Crafstman from Lowe’s 👍
That thumbnail 😮
I tried something a bit different, but happy with how it turned out!
@@tombuck me too it’s glorious 🥰🫶🏽
Do you have a more affordable Fluid Video Head? I'm going to use my Sony ZV-1 with this rig.
The Manfrotto 501 is pretty great- but I wouldn’t go much lighter than that if you’re planning to attach anything besides a camera to it.
Anyone have a suggestion to a reasonable alternative to the camera head that would offer the same versatile ability with the i footage arms and such?
Great info, beefy setup that would last for sure
you can probably do something similar with the Manfrotto 502AH. It doesn't have the locking pin mount, but does have a 3/8" mount on each side.
@@tombuck thank you. Kudos, one thing that stands out to me about you is your willingness to stay connected to the audience. Says a lot and sets you apart in my opinion. Keep being awesome!
But how do you connect the prompter on this moving rode to your mac? I purchased the prompter as well, my problem - I am to close on my desk to the prompter and everybody can see my eyes moving, which is bad :/ So I stopped using it for now :/
I use a long USB cable 👍
Tom, what's up with RCP2 1.3.4 firmware update?
I watched your video about MKH 50. Now I got one finally. The problem is Rode Caster Pro (1) can not give it enough power to have the sound comes out even I had the volume up to the top. Can you give me some advices on this? I've been using it with Rode NTG5 and never have any issues like this.
Be sure you have phantom power turned on- the 50 is a condenser so it doesn’t require much gain (maybe 25-30dB).
@@tombuck Where do I turn the phantom power? Is it on the 50 or on the Rodecaster? Thank you!
@@tombuck I got it. It's in Rodecaster Pro Setting. It works now! Thank you so much Tom!!
Love it! What lav mic are you using?
It's the Sennheiser "Essential Omni" with the EW-DP wireless system.
Would you still recommend that Manfrotto head for smaller cameras I.e. FX 30? Does someone make a smaller version?
The FX30 is the same size as my FX3, so I would. The Manfrotto 501 is also a good option, it's a little smaller and cheaper but still has some additional mounting points. The 504 has just been absolutely phenomenal for me though, and I love never having to worry about it being able to support anything.
Doesn't the Kupo adapter fit straight into the jr pin hole or am I miss remembering?
No you're right! I didn't know that and someone else in the comments here pointed it out. You just need to take off the tightening screw. Brilliant!
Oh wow, it looks VERY similar. Impact is B&H's "house brand" so I wonder if they just relabeled a Kupo?
@@tombuck Maybe, but Kupo costs more.
My gut filling says that all of them are made by uncle Lao form China on the bare same plant.
Just fyi, Manfrotto actually has nearby(exactly) the same stand
Manfrotto Avenger A5012 maybe this is the original which has 'inspired' everyone else.
DId you work without a teleprompter before getting the Elgato?
Yep. I mainly use bullet points for my videos, so I just had the Notes app open on a monitor next to the camera, but the Prompter makes it much easier to keep my place, which speeds up the whole process. It's also absolutely incredible for video calls!
@@tombuck Thank you :)
Well, There's something I want to share about.
I made a low cast camcorder rig that I ever made, It's really simple. I have a mini wireless mic set (Comica Boom X-D2 here in this case) and I have an idea that I'm going to put it on an elastic band on the battery. (An InfoLitihum V battery)
How I did it? Well, It's simple. I put an elastic band on a camcorder battery and clipped a wireless receiver onto the elastic band and that's it, I can control an audio gain from there and I even got 2 audio monitor jacks. (From both my camcorder for more accurate playback and a wireless receiver's monitor audio jack for a real time audio playback. 😁)
The mics are, Well. I could either choose one for a lav mic or a boom mic. (It depends on a setup, I can't really tell)
There's a video on my UA-cam Channel that I’ve covered about so you can go check that out if you want. =)
A great setup but your looooong XLR cable really bugs me. Shorten it to the correct length!
The correct length is the length I need- sometimes the mic needs to be positioned away from the camera rig.
Pllzzzz do this with a light attached
I want help
I only need camera, teleprompter, light. My mic is just a simple rode wireless go.
Kupo makes A TON of different adapters. You can find one that would support a tripod head and a light, which would be great.
@@tombuck thank youuuuu
You would be good for Blues Clues
I'll take it!
When you said the brand you laughed and I’m not sure about what I hear
Meth hat noodles ?
Sorry about that: metcalfnoodles.com
What a thumbnail ! Thank you for always adding fun and colors to this "cinematic mood" UA-cam trend nonsense.
But since you have a kupo adaptor you wont need a but plug.... lol i had to say it
