88 paces per minute where the other brigades march at 110 paces. And they don't split up before the presidential tribune. In French : La Legion ne se divise pas
The very first rows (bearded men) are the "Sapeurs" (= plural form, with an "s"), a unique branch of the Légion étrangère. Many things can be said about them, here are a few... They wear a leather apron. This is a symbol of their skills and ability at handling tools, as they are known for being able to build everything... out of nothing. The verb "saper" (prononce "sah-pay") means to destroy foundations (of a wall, a bridge, etc.) from underground. It takes roots in the Middle-age, when the best way to ruin a castle was to dig under its walls, then set a fire up underneath until the stones would crack and break, then attack through the opening. The "Sapeurs" are suppose to open the road for their fellow Légionnaires to arrive and start the fight. This is why they carry an axe on the rightside shoulder, the tool to open roads and paths (through the rough). Their beard is a proof they can live in the outside for a long time without any worry. They need no shaving to keep their image and appearance constant, and they can pack fewer things for their hygiene. But don't get fooled : they have a high standard when it comes to their look, and you hardly will find anything wrong in their uniform or condition. They lead the leaders ( = the Légion étrangère) because their fundamental mission is to be the very first to arrive at any given place. They start working no matter the environment, so the place is "ready" when other units and vehicules arrive later on. Everyone in the French military (air, sea, ground, etc.) know they depend heavily on the "Sapeurs" to open and clear the way. Who are deeply respected for that.
Very accurate answer, great ! Just one more point : sapeur is the generic word for this function in 'regular' French Army. In Foreign Legion they are known as the 'Pionniers', the first in the column to open the way.
This task is carried by the assault pioneers in British regiments, large engineering works at brigade level are carried by the Corps of Royal Engineers. also note assault pioneers sergeants traditional have beards
I first saw legionnaires at Lord Mountbatten's funeral in London in 1979. A very impressive bunch of lads, and it was very moving with their slow, almost plodding march. respect to you guys!
The slow march is a tribute to the men who patrolled the harsh north african desserts. The Kepi Blanc or white caps signify the bleaching of the hot sun. This is a branch that deserves respect!
Slight correction: The 88 step per minute march rhythm of the Legion has nothing to do with North African deserts, but was inherited from "Ancien Régime" (actually rather "Restauration" era) and napoleonic troops. Your explanation of the white képi is however correct. It was originally kaky brown, but was quickly bleached white by the sun... hence was later made white.
I had a friend who had been a British soldier in Africa and at one point had served alongside a unit from the Legion.he described them as the best soldiers that he had ever served alongside.
Always thrilling... but did you know the Legion has other special features than its multi-national composition ? I have no idea what you want to say. People who want to join the legion have to travel to mainland France and present themselves in one of the recruiting centers. There is one in the largest cities.
