  • The EVELO Compass is a mid-drive electric trike with rear differential that sends power and braking to both wheels! Three speed internally geared hub allows shifting at standstill, motor inhibiting brake levers and inline shift detection provide drivetrain protection. Approachable step-thru frame with decent 350lb max weight (80lbs max in the rear basket). Decent integrated lights, reflective tires, and glossy white frame improve safety and allow for day and night time riding. Plastic fenders are durable, and the width of the trike allows it to fit through most standard sized doors. The rear light goes bright when either brake lever is pulled. Large 180mm mechanical disc brakes provide excellent stopping power. All three wheels are the same size and use the same tires for simpler maintenance and replacement. Tall 24" wheels provide comfort due to lower attack angle, the 2.4" wide tires provide increased air volume for stability and vibration dampening. Riser handlebar, ergonomic grips, and comfort saddle feel nice and provide and upright body position, optional seat post suspension further improves comfort. The trike is expensive and weighs more than a two-wheeled electric bike (though it's lighter than previous generations). Ships free in contiguous USA, mostly assembled with handlebar and pedals requiring attachment. Basic slower charger must be manually plugged into each pack (if you opt for two batteries) and the charge ports are difficult to reach. Only available in one color (white), the rear fenders aren't very refined, only available in America.

    Thank you so much for being so thorough. I watched this several times before deciding to purchase it and I'm watching it after purchase, too. This is better than an owners manual. Still not an easy decision tho due to the price but it seemed like a good option for my daughter. She doesn't own or drive a car because she's mentally handicapped and even a two wheel bicycle is difficult. She can ride it but if she gets distracted or there are too many things going on at once then it's hard to remain upright. I figured with a tricycle at least she won't fall over when she's trying to process multiple things that can happen while riding. And because she doesn't have the expense of a car she could afford to get the Compass. I don't like riding it because it's so different from a bicycle but she doesn't have a problem. For me, it felt like I could tip over too easily. She feels safer than on a bicycle. I had the throttle removed so she couldn't accidentally bump it. I'll set the maximum speed down too. Well have to ride slower when she's with us but that's okay. As a parent of a handicapped child (she's 38 now) you learn to sacrifice.

    Great review as usual, Court! Could you look into Priority Current as a bike for a near future review? I'm torn between it and a few others and there's not many videos on it out there.

    Nice thorough review. I've recently bought a Forza which is even better than the Evelo Compass and about half the price. My Forza has the rear end differential and all other similar features but also has hydraulic brakes, which I'm told are superior to any others. I'm still learning how to ride it and practicing - I live on five acres of very uneven/bumpy/muddy/steep and otherwise tricky terrain, which is why I wanted the differential. My other E-trike is not able to handle this crazy terrain; it is a constant struggle to keep from tipping over, let alone do corners without it dumping me. I'd LOVE to see you do a review of the Forza, especially a trial run off road! Thanks.

    Very nice, but $4,300? I suppose it's fine for those who belong to the heavy wallet brigade and can throw money around like confetti, but what about us less fortunate mortals? Even if I was a member of the HWB, I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a bicycle. As always. love your videos.

    Mechanical brakes on a $4,300 bike how do they justify that please somebody tell me am I wrong??

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  2 роки тому +2

      I see a lot of excellent and unique features on this e-trike that justify the price, including the free shipping and four year warranty. But it is easy to feel like the brakes could have been upgraded and it would have made sense given the weight and type of customers who might be actuating the brake levers. It seems like trikes offer stability and attract people who want that security, people who might have balance or strength issues… so including hydraulic brakes would be a great fit for them. I think it would be possible to add aftermarket, but it would cost a lot more time and money than if they were just stock. So yeah, I hear you Racer X. That said, at least his has larger 180mm rotors, motor inhibiting levers, and the dual wheel braking in the back. There are always trade offs when designing products and I’m not sure why EVELO made their choices, but the rest of the bike is so thoughtfully done that I suspect there was some reason. And they do seem to be improving the trike over time… so maybe the next iteration will have hydraulic brakes :)

      Talking with one of the techs when I was waiting for my bike (back when they still had a Seattle shop) I think I remember them saying they liked mechanical because it allowed customers to do more work on it themselves rather than have to bring it into a shop. Now, I agree, for a heavier trike, I probably would want hydraulic.

    Very nice review! I think of this as a "cargo bike lite". I could envision doing shopping with that large rear basket. For people who do not want to spent 7k to 8k on a mid drive cargo bike and who do not have to transport children this would be a less expensive alternative. If one could attach a trailer, young children could be transported or additional cargo. I never thought of a trike in those terms before. It would be nice to have hydraulic brakes at this price point though. I really appreciate the wide variety of e bikes that you review.

    Great Review, One question, so it has a rear differential, but it is not a limited slip. So for traction, there is no advantage and possibly a disadvantage. Other than turning to the right it is a waste of money.

    They told me that it doesn't fully deplete one then use the other, EVELO support said it periodically switched between the two batteries back and forth.
    If you have two batteries you can just plug the charger into one and both will charge.
    I use two charger so the two are done in half the time...but I have to remove the second battery from its holder before plugging in both to charge.

    Thanks for a great updated review. How about doing the same for the iZip Tristar Plus? I went to great lengths to get one during the summer of 2021 and ❤️ it! This Evelo Compass was also in my short list, but I saved over $1,000 with the Tristar Plus and also prefer the smaller rear wheels.

    Thank you Court for your comprehensive review. A question: “Is there a TRAILER” option available for this trike?” I was thinking of the trike hauling cargo. How can a trailer connect to the trike? Thank you soo much.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  2 роки тому +3

      That’s a creative idea! Although I’ve never seen a trailer connected to a trike, it seems possible with a bit of custom work. The biggest change might be removal of the rear light in order to center the trailer mount. Most trailers connect to the left side of the chain stay and seat stay triangle or to a bolt through the left dropout area. This trike doesn’t have either of those interfaces so i think one of the tubes surrounding the differential or basket support tubes would need to serve as the interface.

    • @GixrGuy
      @GixrGuy 2 роки тому +2

      What if, this trike had a hitch which could accept 4-Wheel QUAD Trailers? Some of those trailers are inexpensive compared to commercial bicycle trailers ie: Carla Cargo.

      Yeah, that's the one area that I wish was upgraded. It seems like a reasonable thing given the price, perhaps the distance was non-standard or maybe the design with the rear differential made it prohibitive?

    I would expect, a must at $4300 at least hydraulic brakes, no plastic chain guard & …plastic rear fenders..come on, minimal cost manual adjustable seat lever, $69 nicer seat with lumbar support backing. Your basically a huge premium aka paying extra for their 4yr warranty in advance. Although, I can afford it I just don’t see the quality of parts many are left behind. Hard pass.

You also read the way in non-binary issues. Because you were non binary before it was cool to be non-binary now I guess you're happy that the world has caught up to your style where nobody has a gender anymore

    • @ElectricBikeReview

      Delta trikes yes, tadpole with two rear wheels tend to be more stable. I guess if the rider begins with difficulty mounting and balancing a two wheel bicycle, then a three wheel starts as more stable, with the caveat that it must be turned more carefully and slowly.
