    This mower is a beast. Someone tossed one out 10 yrs ago and left a sign that it wouldn't start. I rescued him and found the only thing wrong was the supply valve from the tank was shut off! Best mower I have ever owned and POWERFUL.

    I had one left behind by a tenant that would barely fire. The automatic choke engines have some sort of thermal wax plug thingies on the carburetor that cost maybe twelve bucks. In addition, the carbs have all kinds of gaskets and thimagagoos .
    The solution for being able to assemble a Honda carb is to borrow or buy studs from a horizontal Honda engine and the carb is easy to assemble and test properly.
    Those old original Honda carbs are good ones if you understand the auto chokes and how to easily assemble them with the assembly studs which are available as a set or just get them from an old broken horizontal engine. I know this doesn't apply to this project, but I am sure that Bruce has or will work on one of the auto chokes some day. Like the channel . God bless

      Bruce's Shop I’m guessing they weren’t cared for very well. I have always made sure the air filter and housing is cleaned out. Now that I’ve been studying small engine work for three months I’ve learned that not making sure everything that goes into the cylinder is as clean as possible does tend to cause wear in that area leading to oil burning excessively (at the very least).

    Out of all the channels I watch on small engine repair, you seem to be the one tech that bends, tweaks, stretches, compresses, attachment points that forces you to resort to changing the intended design. You eventually get it to run, but I don't think I would have much confidence in your approach and long term product reliability. Changing the jet size here is case in point.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  2 роки тому +3

      I have been doing this for many years. Regarding the jetting of the carbs most small engine mechanics do it now as carb orifices have gotten so small most newer engines surge when not under load.

    How's she goin'? Nice fix Bruce. Once again you show that if you aren't satisfied you won't let it go. I like to see that!! Interesting when you state that new carbs run leaner. I installed a new carb on my new to me MTD and it surges terrible at high speed. I wonder if I were to increase the main jet if that would help. We'll see. Thanks for posting this and Happy Thanksgiving to you and Mrs P!!!

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  2 роки тому +1

      First is it a Honda style carb? If so There is the main jet you know and there is the idle jet under the idle adjustment (plastic black screw). That can be enlarged a SMALL amount too.

    • @GrampiesWorkshop
      @GrampiesWorkshop 2 роки тому

      @@BrucesShop No it's not a Honda type carb and the High Speed jet looks to be inaccessible. I ordered another carb with a high speed jet adjustment and I'm waiting for that to come in. Once it shows up I'll install it and then have a look at this carb to see if I can access the high speed jet. But I don't want to try right now in case I ruin the carb.

We actually have 3 year old treated fuel with the K100+ all stored in the NO SPILL fuel tanks and it looks just like fresh fuel bought today likely because these fuel tanks have no venting. Bruce can you tell us how much you increased the jet size to stop the surging? Good video just wondering about the 3500 to 3600 rpm specification we normally set all our small engines to a maximum of 3150 rpm.

    • @jjparody8257
      @jjparody8257 2 роки тому

      I thought about that higher rpm speed, too. But 3150 (actually 2950- 3100 in my mower owner's manual & called "Maximum Governed "Speed") is the recommendation for the more recent GCV160's & 190's. However, Bruce's mower has a GXV120 (late 90's; early 2000's). Maybe that's the reason for the higher rpm. I checked the GXV120 owner's manual online & it only references a speed of 2000 +/- 150 RPM with the "throttle lever in the LO position;" that is, at idle. Interestingly, the GCV160 engine manual, as opposed to the mower manual, only references an idle speed (no mention of a max speed) of 1,450 +/- 150 RPM. Maybe that explains why the older engines can handle higher rpm than the newer one's. In any case, Honda's are great mowers/engines but they are anything but clear-cut.

    • @BrucesShop
