I would definitely try to swap engines, however, you need to know I can take 2 perfectly good mowers and turn them into junk in just a few minutes. Knowledge and skill are limited but the enthusiasm is there. Thanks for the video.
Hello HG . Great job. Be sure that the lengh from the deck is the same on both engines. Diameters for the puley and clutch too. Good swap for everybody !
Excellent, & great filming. I did the opposite; I put a GCV160 on a high end HRX217. It is working great and, yes, three bolts will hold just fine although four obviously provides added strength. My donor engine came from a Husqvarna mower & was cast with just 3 threaded bolt holes. The GCV190 is listed as having 8.4 ft. lbs. of torque vs. 6.9 for the GCV160. So, about 21% more ...but both are tough engines & plenty powerful enough.
This was a very good return on the price of that bigger & better engine - congrats. It's perfect that you had a clean carb and refurb'ed starter to put on the "new" GVC190. When you did the compression test, I'm glad you mentioned to spin the engine so that the compression release does not distort the reading. As an example, I recently tested the compression on the OHV Tecumseh 6 HP on my Ariens snow blower, and at first, I forgot about the compression release and pulled the rope. I got numbers around 50-55 PSI. Then I remembered what I was doing wrong, and plugged in the electric start, and I got around 130 PSI, which is not bad for a 2008 engine. I will have to use a drill & socket to spin my mower's engine some time and see how that one is.

I pulled apart two Honda mowers , rebuilt one from the bottom up , and restored the other . One is now used all summer long at an apartment building I gave it to, and the other mower we have at home , still missing a blade !
I did this when I swapped out the Briggs on the Ninja Snapper for the Kawasaki. Kawasaki and Briggs are set up backwards as far as intake and exhaust so it was really interesting. Shaft size was different and the Deere the Kawa was on had a blade clutch which ended up making a fine blade adapter and a copper 90 degree sweat fitting ended up making another exhaust gas outlet from the mower to get the exhaust away from the plastic bag chute. After finally after everything got fitted it's run perfectly from then on. And yes, I'd do it again. Good job and Thanks!
Great swap. Yesterday I bought what I thought was a GCV-160 to do a swap on a mower but it turned out to be a GCV-190 instead, I might have other plans for it now.
Yes, if i could get a perfectly fine deck out running again by doing an engine swap, sure I would do it. I have done a lot of engine swaps thru the years. I do have a lot of spare engines, as our poor weather in Scandinavia eats up the mower decks😅

I actually picked up two mowers this summer for free. one from a neighbor and one on the side of the road, I have projects for both the motors. the first things for them just want to get them up and running.
I did an engine swap on my 25 year old snow blower a couple of years ago. Not much harder than yours, just had to make a hole in the belt cover. Again it was a higher horsepower engine. Works like a top.
The swap was a good idea and got a decent price on it too. I hope you still take the other engine apart though just so we can see the damage. I have a garage full of good used engine parts. Mostly cause I can't help myself and break down broken engines into usable spare parts. I often sell them on eBay if I build up too big of a supply of any one thing. My wife just shakes her head when she looks at my wall bins and rolls her eyes as she walks by me. 😝
I've had the same mower for 12-15 years. This past year it started wearing out, loose drive train, motor smoking a little, etc. I decided to buy a new one and looked around. Ended up finding a free Honda mower on the curb that seemed in decent shape so I brought it home. It wouldn't run and I found the ground was loose. I fixed that and it started right up. Did some maintenance (oil, sharpen blade, adjust drive train) and it's working perfectly. Would I do an engine swap? probably not. People in my area throw things out when they have even the simplest issue, so getting a free mower would be a simple FB Marketplace or Craigslist search.
Great job! I would like to see a rebuild on the old engine. Since most engines have carburetor problems from poor storage, it would be somewhat of a PITA, but it would make a great video!
if I recall the main issue, on this and most Hondas, was a lack of lubrication, from zero maintenance. The upper bearing, was absolutely trashed, because it's the furthest away, from what little Oil was available. To rebuild it, I would have to replace the upper back half, of the block or put a sleeve in. The first option, would be "economically" unviable, and the second would require machining, which I'm certain would not be cheap either.
Nice video! My only critique is that you missed having the drive belt pulley key installed at 8:40. If it's missing, the pulley can (most likely will) spin and damage the crank snout.
My dads Honda lawnmower has the 186cc GSV190 engine fitted as well & it needs a rebuild as it burns oil at 18 years of age. Once it comes to engine swaps you have to know what you're doing with ride on lawnmowers (lawn tractors) because they have a PTO clutch fitted which needs a suitably sized generator on it to run it. You need to decide whether you need a charging system at all. As far as scrap lawnmowers go they get recycled in my area anyway, our local aluminium smelter recycles aluminium & I'm looking forward to hearing from them about work !
My video on my other channel will tear down a B&S engine to try and rebuild it, but in the end, the cost is prohibitive. The piston, rings, rod and both gasket was over $100. Even if you don't replace your rod, you said the valves need to be replaced? both of them cost as much as the rod so it's still the same price. For less than $100 you can buy a used mower with a perfectly good engine already
A great repair vid, I have one to do some drive belt replacement on. I think you should also suggest to measure crank length from bottom of engine mount face to shaft blade bolt up. I did an engine swap years ago and mower cutting was effected because crank was different length. It was not a Honda though. Just something to be aware of
This engine swap was well needed, now. I have to ask, if you could have the ultimate personal lawn care setup, what-mower, string trimmer, and blower would you use. Also, what kinda trimmer line do you like to use, i like the Echo strait fire line, it cut really good.
Nice question. I would use a mid level honda mower, plastic deck and self propel, trimmer would be an echo srm225, blower would be a a high end echo backpack that mainly for the leaves. Stihl hand held for just grass.
It's not hard to swap an engine. The hardest part about it is dealing with a seized blade adapter and reattaching the mounting bolts when installing the new one on the deck. This one turned out really well. I would have probably done the same thing with this one.
It may have been the angle of the camera, but I think I saw the body around the motor flexing. It could be like you said . Bad blades or the motor has too much torque for the frame. I had one flex so bad that it cracked the frame.
@@HomeGaragechannel It starts right at 11:11 you can only see it on full seen. After watching it again I think it's an optical illusion caused by the pull rope moving back and forth. Watch it at the top of the engine and see if you can see it moving. Heck, it could just be my eyes fooling me.
Not a bad price for that engine since you already had another to take parts off of, and you can always disassemble the old engine and sell the parts on eBay to make your money back. This past winter I bought a 1971 Ariens snow thro snowblower for cheap but it didn't come with an electric starter, I found someone selling a junk one and got it for $40, which is what it would cost for a used starter alone, I parted out everything and made about $200.
Would love to see a vid about the transmission. When my Honda gets extremely hot it starts to slip. I normally run it on setting 2. When it starts to slip, I can use settings 1 or 3, but those are either to fast or to slow.
Quick tip: You should be able to find a blacksmith/machinist in your area that can sharpen and balance the old blade instead of replacing it, it will save you money and should be sharper than original + outlast the mower :)

@@HomeGaragechannel Good job, I was anticipating a problem with the carburetor because of the larger engine size which could’ve been fixed with different jets but by the time you’re done you could probably buy the cheap aftermarket carburetor cheaper
Honda has the BEST lawnmower engines as far as 4-cycle and 2 stroke KNOWN TO MAN. I'm sorry, there's no comparison. It's sad that Honda stopped making these engines, although you can get the replacements still, they discontinued MAKING lawnmowers, I think that is WELL deserved, they really have made the BEST ones of that size, I wish they would make a 30-inch like the Toro Timemasters, I WANT to put a honda engine on a Toro Timemaster FRAME, that is my LONG-TERM goal, IF I can't put a GCV200, GCV190, or something like that on there, I want to put MAYBE a WX10 engine or something similar to that, even at low RPMS those things put out some serious output, but I don't think a Gear Reduction would fit there haha.
Home Garage hope. You see this. I got a hhr216 with blade control brake...but engine is toast. I have a old hrb216 with a good engine the hrb216 has the Roto stop system. Any tips I might need to swap engines?
Is that a clutch/PTO for the blades? Have to say that's the first time I've ever seen that on a push mower. Is it a new thing or maybe just less common? Only push mowers I've ever used have been a straight shaft down to the blades (and belt drive to the front wheel drive). Either way excellent well put together video. I wonder if there's any noticeable difference in power (such as in tough grass conditions, tall/thick/wet, etc) between the GCV160 and 190. Also to answer the question, as someone who does all my own work on my vehicles (aside from inspections and tires), I would for sure engine swap a mower. For me it's worth the learning experience and to have the job done correctly.
Thanks for the comment Ixionn, a clutch PTO has been around for awhile, mainly available for commercial equipment, but it was an option for residential grade too. Most people didn't buy them tho has the price was a bit then normal for it.
I would like to know how it's performing please let me know how this engines working I considering doing the same thing to mine almost the exact same swap
I picked up a Honda HRR216vxa at the junk yard. I have put over $175 dollars into it for all the parts it was missing. It’s too late to turn back now. The problem I am having with it is, the engine vibrates uncontrollably at high rpm but not low rpm. I thought it might be a bench crank shaft but the vibration goes away when I engage the blades with the roto stop. I’ve replaced the blue bearing that attaches the blade adapter to the crank shaft. The motor does not have any weird noises or knocks at low rpm or when the blades are engages. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@@HomeGaragechannel I do not see any fins missing. Do you think it could be the second ball bearing that is closer to the engine? I can’t think of anything else it could be.
Why you pour the oil out of a small engine like this, I'd find like an old 8x8 baking pan and sit that inside the oil drain pan, I've found when you pour the thick straight 30 or Xw40 or Xw50 oil out of a mower into an automotive drain pan meant to hold several quarts you really can't transfer the oil to another container to ger rid of it since it's thick and a half quart of oil just sticks to the sides of the big pan but an 8x8 pan is about perfect and you can pour the majority of it out without having to waste half a roll of paper towels to wipe almost a half a quart of oil that's spread out over an automotive size catch pan.
@@conner5611 I could probably get it done in that time too but I go and take all the parts I need or want off of it and I also take the engine apart to scrap the aluminum in it
I am working on my neighbors honda hrx217. It has the adjustable throttle on the handle bar. The problem they said it had was, it would only run on choke. I thought that would be a simple carb clean and problem solved. I reinstalled the old carb and it would run off of choke but it wouldn't run smooth like a honda should. It wasn't surging but almost like a misfire. I replaced the carb with OEM. It still does this. I also changed the spark plug that was currently in it when I got it. It still does not run smooth. Do you think I need to replace the coil or is it another issue?
not yet, have you check the valve lash? also, is the gas tank filled all they to the top or is it less than that? also try leaving the fuel cap very loose, as a test. have you tried running I without the air filter, to run it out, and also to watch the choke flap?
@@HomeGaragechannel there is about half a tank of gas, and I’ve tried with and without air filter. It starts on the first pull every time, do you think valve lash could be the cause still?

@@HomeGaragechannel Good job, I was anticipating a problem with the carburetor because of the larger engine size which could’ve been fixed with different jets but by the time you’re done you could probably buy the cheap aftermarket carburetor cheaper
@@HomeGaragechannel Always look for corrosion outlines/wear patterns when reinstalling blades.
Ah.. you're a very smart person. I might have to see if theres a difference in jetting an throat size between the carbs. Thank for the video Idea!
I'll tackle one thanks to you!
nice!
Honda has the BEST lawnmower engines as far as 4-cycle and 2 stroke KNOWN TO MAN. I'm sorry, there's no comparison.
It's sad that Honda stopped making these engines, although you can get the replacements still, they discontinued MAKING lawnmowers, I think that is WELL deserved, they really have made the BEST ones of that size, I wish they would make a 30-inch like the Toro Timemasters, I WANT to put a honda engine on a Toro Timemaster FRAME, that is my LONG-TERM goal, IF I can't put a GCV200, GCV190, or something like that on there, I want to put MAYBE a WX10 engine or something similar to that, even at low RPMS those things put out some serious output, but I don't think a Gear Reduction would fit there haha.
thank you, I really like this comment
Wow, good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Easy swap. Good job
Thanks 👍
I do motor swaps all the time. Whenever I get a mower with a bad deck it gets parted out and the motor is saved for another project.
Nice process.
I love adding power to things more power more power
I completely agree with you
My cousin Sam his son drag races of these engines are some engines some variant of this engine with a lot of power somewhere in Oregon is all I know
Sorry the Briggs & Stratton we use an eight horse pulling up Dungeness crab pots they're about 100 lbs about 40 to 60 fetal line
very nice
that makes sense
Did you have a video on the transmission service you mentioned
no I don't
Sounded like the engine was running a bit fast. Possibly above 3600 RPM when it should be closer to 3200.
I think you're right.
I wanna go this to a commercial Honda mower with the gxv 390. It would be a tank.
you got that right.
It sounds good and runs good 👍
thank you Heath Wilson
Home garage is a small engine wizard
thanks I appreciate that.
Blessings...
Home Garage hope. You see this. I got a hhr216 with blade control brake...but engine is toast. I have a old hrb216 with a good engine the hrb216 has the Roto stop system. Any tips I might need to swap engines?
sure, check and make sure that the shaft dimensions are the same before swapping
No problem to swap the engine on my part however the cost ratio need to be favorable.
you are correct
I just paid $15 for an OEM carb on this engine. Even the OEM are super cheap on this one.
could you send me the link for the one you bought
Did you rejet the carb? I would think the old carb on the new larger engine might be a tad lean.
ah, I think you might be on to something
Wow, just great job as usual. I restored a 71 MGB and don’t think I’d tackle that job. How long did it take you?
if I had to guess probably about 3 - 4 hours but I was also filming
Great vid
thank you Michael Gonzales.
I would like to know how it's performing please let me know how this engines working I considering doing the same thing to mine almost the exact same swap
when mowing season starts back up, I'll let you know.
Great machine makes perfect work👍🙏👋🇵🇭
Yes it does!
I would remove the top plastic cover/fuel tank, so you inspect the flywheel for any missing fins.
@@HomeGaragechannel I do not see any fins missing. Do you think it could be the second ball bearing that is closer to the engine? I can’t think of anything else it could be.
@@stormmosher5818 to be honest, without being there, I really could't say.
Running the governor up higher on the Honda mower has nothing to do with the engine failure I say with certainty running it on low oil was the problem
You are probably right
Why you pour the oil out of a small engine like this, I'd find like an old 8x8 baking pan and sit that inside the oil drain pan, I've found when you pour the thick straight 30 or Xw40 or Xw50 oil out of a mower into an automotive drain pan meant to hold several quarts you really can't transfer the oil to another container to ger rid of it since it's thick and a half quart of oil just sticks to the sides of the big pan but an 8x8 pan is about perfect and you can pour the majority of it out without having to waste half a roll of paper towels to wipe almost a half a quart of oil that's spread out over an automotive size catch pan.
do it the way you find the easiest.
Engine swaps are easy. I’m 14 and I can usually swap an engine on a tractor in under 24hrs
That's awesome
I can do it in about 30mins or a hour for twin cylinders I work at a lawn mower shop
It starts on the first pull every time, do you think valve lash could be the cause still?
possible, and it wouldn't hurt to check anyway.
yes but only thanks to this video!
Thank you too!
Just wanted to ask you mate, do you get any victa 2 strokes in America?
unfortunately no and thank you John Dallis for the question
What compression tester do you use
its a no name I got off of Amzn. the link is in the description
I have a craftsman lawnmower but the Self propelled is weak what could be the problem?
I would replace the belt, but more the likely the pulleys are also worn.
@@HomeGaragechannel where could I buy a new belt?
ereplacementparts dot com, enter your model number number, find the appropriate serial number range, and click on the link to your mower, the parts list and diagram will show up
We're did you get your compression tester I got one from harbor freight and it maxes our at 70psi I tried a brand new push mower with it to see if my mower engines are in bad condition but it caps out at 70 still so can you tell me were you got yours ? And I think k you mean crankcase breather not emissions tube
I do believe the link is in the description of video. I purchased it from Amzn.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks
honda mowers are the best.
thank you Donovan Thoesen, I agree with you.
That’s good mower
Thank you Heath Wilson
If i had that mower with the blade clutch i would just remove the whole blade clutch system and just modify the mower to use it without the complicated system.
me too.
You didnt adjust the governor.
I guess I didn't
I have the same mower, same throttle lever issue. Did you find a fix?
You mean for the bad engine?
@@HomeGaragechannel The throttle lever falling out of position @ 11:53
Yes try tightening the bolt for the lever.
Yes I would
thank you!
Is this one auto choke or manual choke?
good old manual choke
fixing that kind of engines is very simple, i would fix the engine and make something else with the other engine
