    You get what you give...
Treat this as a business, conduct yourself as a professional and show that you care for your riders.
3 years now with Uber and 8 thousand trips.
On a bad day, the money is good.
    Most days it's great.
    That's after all expenses.
Tax deductions and IRS mileage allotments have more than reimbursed me for wear and tear on my vehicle.
Anyone not making at least decent money on this platform need to re-evaluate how they are running their service.
    Great video as usual Calvin!

You also don't get to control your prices. Essentially, what Uber and Lyft have both done, is created technology that allows them to "employ" laborers without calling them "laborers". In this way they can rake in profits without the typical expenses that comes with having employees. Things like health care and life insurance, unemployment insurance, etc. Genius on their part. Screwy for us drivers. If I paid out of pocket for health alone, I'd be making slave wages if I just drove and did nothing else. That being said, if you do hustle, you can turn the tide in your favor. I just watched a vid that pointed out at least 3 or 4 companies that pay you to use their services during your rideshare business. Car advertising, snack services, product marketing. There's even one that pays you to use their music service. Bottom line, there's going to be negative Nancy's that are too lazy to hustle. That's fine. That's their choice, but those willing to put in the effort can make this work for them. Ya just gotta stay hungry and go put that food on your table. No one is going to do that for you. It's called personal responsibility and many people are seriously lacking it.

Calvin thanks for your work. I started in Dallas, but drive in D.C., (presently been driving 4+ years with 11,400+ rides). Drive a little 2015 Honda Civic. With the bonuses offered in this market I can make between $800 and $900 per week driving about a combined 30-36 hours total Monday thru Thursday. I don’t have to drive on the weekends if I don’t want to, but I do.
My big take away from this video:
1.) Utilize the referrals (I’ll watch your vid)
    2.) Set up a website
    3.) Set up an LLC
You definitely have me thinking hard about saving cash to invest in Uber when they go public.
    Thanks again!

Dear Simple Driver, I hate to be on the opposite side of any UBER discussion to you. However, I find myself excitedly putting up my hands to raise what I believe is a fair objection to your point as to "why" drivers may choose to work with UBER.
So much of what you said may be true and correct for UBER in America but I can tell you that UBER UK is a scam, and UBER knows that.
I remember taking up the subject with a couple of advisers at my local Greenhub and all they had to say was "well, it's not profitable for most drivers because of local rules."
And, why over-regulation by the local licencing authorities may mean that drivers have to shell out so much money in fees just to get licenced, first as a driver and, yet more expenses to get one's vehicle licenced, you might be tempred to think that UBER will reflect these driver's expenses in the charges to passengers, as one way to help drivers recoup some of their expanses but you would be wrong !
UBER simply takes you on and finds you passengers at the lowest fares. So, while passengers may think UBER is a fantastic service, the drivers, on the other hand, have to take on second jobs or quit UBER altogether if they are to make ends meet. I know that because I have had to quit the so-called partnership.
UBER may work well in the US, where you can literally buy a car and take it to your local Greenhub for registration right after which you may literally start earning !
Licencing by my local authority costs more than $600 with an additional $250+ to have my car plated with a taxi registration. Yet, for all that, base rate in my locality is under $2 . Yes, drivers pick up riders here and spend about 25 -30 minutes on a job (total time to pick up and drop off) and end up with less than $5. Therefore, in a hour, you may be lucky to earn $10 before costs to driver and other deductions. Not forgetting that the same driver may have had to take out some financing to purchase the car, in the first place, since you are not allowed to register vehicles that are more than 5 years old.
My point is that this video may be helpful to drivers in America but it offers absolutely nothing to UBER drivers, here in the UK.
Let's face it, companies like UBER are thriving today because the can get away with a lot of the anti-labour practices that yield them unbelievable profits.
I am only giving a summary of our conversation but it was made clear to me that over-regulation by local authorities, here in the UK, are the reasons why drivers are unhappy with UBER UK
    I cannot

I mostly pick up people from bars. So, I googled, yelped, etc. to determine the most popular bars and clubs. I made a list of 60 bars (could have been larger). I then googled each individual bar (still not complete) and created a chart that shows their open hours, busiest hours (particularly the times after their peak hour, as that's when the most ppl are leaving) as well as happy hours and ladies nights. I then make maps for each night of the week. I laminated all of these before writing anything in sharpies so it can be updated as sometimes bars close down for good. Since the bars are numbered, I plot them on the maps. Each night will have numbers plotted at their locations with best hours to be there based on when people leave the most. Using this, I can, at any given hour of the night know which bars I should be at AND which ones are closest to my current location. A fare takes me far from one bar? No problem, which one that's good at this hour is closest? All right, I'll go there. I did have lengthy car problems after making the lists and maps. I'll be putting it to the test soon. Also, idk about Uber, but another youtuber advised that if you take pics of vomit in your car from fares, Lyft with reimburse you 150-250 cleaning fee. If you're great at cleaning like I am, vomit in your car could be your best friend during a Lyft.

@@TheSimpleDriver I couldn't conscientiously refer someone to drive for Uber at this date. In the past certainly I could and I did. I have been in Executive Search and recruiting/staffing for more than 20 years. There is no industry in the United States that even comes close to matching the turnover of the Rideshare industry period. Lack of earnings is the overwhelming factor, they have burned through millions and millions of drivers nationwide. Your smart to not drive any longer. At .64 cents per mile before they take their booking fee and percentage it is highly unlikely you could even break even after true expenses. Plus remember you will only get paid for the miles someone is actually in your car, which will probably account for less than half the miles you will drive depending on your market. Reality is you can not operate a car for 20-25 cents per mile. How anyone could consciously refer a driver that has a better than 99% of failure so you can earn $10-50 per refferal should spend some time in honest prayer.

Going pubic in 2019, along with Lyft. Good point about "why" I am driving for Lyft (kinda the same!). Never the less, I need the extra money to SURVIVE! If I wasn't driving, I would literally be homeless, moreover I like owning my own business and setting my own direction.
My company is currently "sole proprietor," though in 2019, I convert it to an LLC. There were too many expenses all at once in 12/2018. Needless to say, you are absolutely right about keeping business expenses separate. That part, for me, at least is done. I do have a business account. It'll be closed in November, and reopened under the LLC.

I believe the California Supreme Court would disagree with you. They are not a technology company. I think this will go to Federal court and Uber (and Lyft) will lose as will all the other Gig Economy Apps. The IRS needs to create a new classification for this type of business, we are not employees and are not independent contractors. Somewhere in the middle. Until that is fixed, it will be a major problem.

    • @TheSimpleDriver

The Simple Driver respectfully I have to disagree. these companies are trying to hide under the claims that they are TECH companies to avoid having to abide by labor laws, avoiding things like minimum wage requirements, unemployment coverage and wrongful termination. One could argue that Uber since they have multiple platforms could be a TECH company, however you can’t say that for companies like Lyft or Grubhub or Caviar. Their primary source of revenue is related to that particular business. I don’t think any Uber driver WANTS to be an employee, they don’t want to punch a time clock or wear a uniform, however they should be allowed to negotiate rates and the contract. My entire point of this is that there needs to be a new classification for these types of jobs, they do not meet the criteria of either an employee or a contractor. I believe that would solve what could potentially be a massive legal battle.

The Simple Driver agreed its the elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss. And yep shit is going to hit the fan when autonomous vehicles arrive. I read an analyst report that unemployment rate could skyrocket to over 20% when that happens. It affects everyone (truckers especially). To put that into perspective the unemployment rate was 24% at the height of the Great Depression. I sincerely hope that our elected officials are discussing this. To help everyone maybe you /or Uber can help us find an insurance company so that we can drive with peace of mind knowing that we drivers and our customers are covered in case of an accident. That's all that preventing me from starting to drive.

I agree. Uber/Lyft will run you and your car into the ground. And the days where you're all pumped up to drive and go get it, it gets slow and boring and doubt starts to set in cause time starts to fade (that you can't get back) and you're not making any money. They need to have a base pay check to add to the drivers who drive fulltime over a consecutive 3 month period. Somebody who does this for real needs to be compensated for all that time in the field without receiving a ping for hours on end.

Hey uber sent out an email to drivers like 2-3 months ago changing the referral code program. Uber said you can no longer post your referral code on social media, UA-cam videos, and websites. Uber said you can only use your referral code to refer people you actually know like your brother or a co-worker. Uber can now deactivate your driver account for using your referral code like that. It was a great idea before but uber stopped it they even said they can take back all of your previous referral money. Smh damn you uber.

I am a driver business owner. I have a comment about the referral codes. Many drivers believe that by referring new drivers in, they are shooting themselves in the foot by creating more competition for rides. Overabundance of cars on the road congesting the traffic, creating problems including drivers sitting in traffic unpaid, has also been an issue recently in many cities. What is your opinion on this?

That was literally the business model I had for my rideshare startup couple months ago. It's a great concept, but they will fail bcz they have no strategy to convince the user to leave uber and lyft...Tesla have already won the rideshare battle without even starting and Tryp will disappear quick.
To be honest I think any other rideshare platforms coming up should increase the fare ride instead of decreasing it, and solely focus on the drivers instead of the passenger...
Imagine a new app where drivers make more, offers same features as uber and lyft and most drivers would use it instead of uber/Lyft... The customer will have no choice but to follow bcz that is where the rides are available ...My vision is to help drivers make more money and purchase a self driving car that will continue to pay them without them being in the car... They deserve it, the rideshare +$120B industry was founded on their back, credit, and health...
Due to lake of funding I had to slow down on it, and focus instead on educating drivers how to make a profitable business for themselves while driving for uber/Lyft within 6 months... At the moment that is the best way I can use my time and resources to help drivers...

I was born in San Francisco, so obviously I drive here. Money can be great for Uber or Lyft. Lyft has better quality riders in the Bay Area. I felt with independent contractors for 20 years, so I’m I. Tune with all the tax and banking. The best way to help yourself is to sell yourself. Especially if you have an idea in tech. Just never give your idea away. You talk around the idea. If they are interested, then they will ask for your info. Uber does not care about a single driver. Only if they can make Uber money. They have been caught in many lies. If you live in a tech area and have ideas, then prepare for a conversation. A lot of passengers in San Francisco are I. Tech, so they can be pretty weird at times and not know how to hold a conversation. You cannot force a talk out of them. Each city is very different, especially the home of tech. It is not easy to sell yourself, but if you are prepared, then it helps.

HI Calvin! You brought up good points in this video. Can you please discuss in as much detail as possible the Insurance issues. Uber has it's own insurance company certificate, but the real issue is our personal insurance. We literally have to sneak around and drive on the DL hoping we dont have an incident or accident. Drivers stand the risk of losing their insurance. Am I correct or is there another angle that I'm not seeing? I've read reviews that stated that Uber Insurance coverage isnt all that. Can we be held personally accountable? I feel all the drivers need definitive information, (maybe a printable pdf?) answers about this issue. Not trying to cast negativity on the things, just being realistic. We stand to lose big time if our ins company finds out. If not you, how do we get info regarding this matter? Uber technologies is worth 96 BILLION dollars. I drive AT LEAST 9 hours a day, and take the 8th day off. I GROSS about $100 a day, and put 1,000 miles A WEEK on my car. That is a service every 3 weeks, costing anywhere between $100 to over $300, for routine maintenance. $100 doesn't give you much to work with. And I am really frustrated about it.... the passive income part of my business is lacking big time. I can make almost 900.00 per week driving , but I am getting tired of it and I want my web site to pick up the slack...something I must be doing wrong. It has been over a year now and I have not gotten one single referral...

Hello. I would like to comment about the Uber referrals you were talking about because there could be several problems and issues with that now.
I don't know if you know this one Uber UA-cam channel but its called Uberhints its this middle aged gentleman named Mark. He had talked about how Uber is setting a limit on how many referrals drivers can give out and you can possibly be deactivated from Uber by giving out to many Uber Referrals especially through social media. This one recent video of Mark's title is "Uber wants to tell me who my friends are." Its quite a interesting video he did. But in that video he talks about what is really a friend? A rider could be a friend.
I do not currently drive for any longer. Will I try Lyft? Or maybe try Uber again in the future? We will have to see time will tell on that. Although as of now I am still cooling down from a situation but would love to tell you about mine so maybe it would help you better to explain to drivers and future drivers on what to do and what not to do.
I liked how you explained about the video about whether if you are considered an employee and stuff like that. I feel like there's are probably many people out there who choose to drive for uber think and feel well as long as I have good ratings and good overall on making my riders happy it will be good enough. But...... There are always a few percentage of people you could get a lot that will complain. I guess the main thing I wanted to get across is its possible to get kicked off even though you have been really good and have badges and lots of compliments riders have given you. Its like sometimes you see professional athlete coach's get fired and sometimes you can feel Man he wasn't given a fair chance he wasn't that bad. He helped get the team to the playoffs the team was over .500 most of the time when he coached that team. Then he gets fired. Well that's kind of what its like with Rideshare. Just because you have been really good through most of your rides, does not always guarantee job security.
I would love to tell you the whole story when I am ready but do not want to put a comment publicly about it. It was a good informative video but the Referral Code thing is the only downfall I had on it. I have heard that it is in Ubers updated policy on how many Referral Codes you can give out.

Hey Jason, I have READ the Referral policy for myself and it's very VAGUE. I have also been in touch with insiders and there is nothing specific. FRIENDS? questionable... There is NO LIMIT listed. They are cracking down on SPAMMERS, not REAL people with brands like myself or TheRideShareGuy...etc...etc. It's weird to say the least. Here are the rules... www.uber.com/legal/other/referral-terms-us-can-en/
