How Gundam Thunderbolt turns Music into a Weapon

    One thing the Gundam franchise has established itself with is a commentary on war that persists in almost every entry. Some do this well, others absolutely terribly, but not often is a sense of desperation and nihilism conveyed musically. Usually in Gundam shows music serves as a light at the end of the tunnel or the hope the characters are fighting for. However the Thunderbolt staff saw things differently, and in their adaptation of Yaso Ohtagaki’s manga, they took the opportunity to make something of a statement with their use of music. I’m personally not a fan of free jazz at all, I don’t go out of my way to listen to it, or really any noise-centric music for that matter. Might have something to do that all the jazz performers I met at school and uni were obnoxious as all hell. But personal experiences aside it’s impossible to deny how effective it is for this series, which highlights the importance of understanding musical concepts and how they fit within narratives like these.

    The points raised about free jazz in this video are in no way indicative of any and all free jazz in any context. Traits such as atonality, polytempo and polyrhythms are in no way restricted to this kind of music and can be found in many other performance/compositional practices. I moreso wanted to make this video to see how THIS series/compilation film in particular chose to contextualize these elements but I’m not really sure that came across in the final product. Then again I am a (former) classically trained musician so I guess most of this free jazz stuff is inherently “weird” to me anyway lol

      I think you're misreading how Io is being presented in Thunderbolt. From his character design (sharp and angular,typically seen in villainous characters) to his thoughts on jazz after his jam session(saying that the music really found it's direction thanks to modern editing/processing), points to him being a misguided individual, if not outright opposition to the very point of free jazz and by extension his worldview/view of war being wrong. He's at best misguided, at worst an obvious villain.
      I am by no means a zeon fanboy, but the softer moments shown for Daryl paints him in a far more positive, sympathetic role, whereas Io is shown in a overly rough and crude(passionate?) manner paints him as a chaotic and hedonistic character
      Not that there's any heroes in war especially when it comes to Gundam, just that all the cues seem to point to Daryl being the "hero" of this series

    I don't think the music is weaponized, I think their FEELINGS are weaponized. The music is more of a representation of Io and Daryl's feelings.

    • @HaloFTW55
      @HaloFTW55 6 років тому +35

      It doesn’t seem to stop at feelings. The music is a representation of their personalities and view on the world.
      Io’s love of the rush of speeding in space is reflected in the Jazz he listens to and that plays when he is the center of the camera. Daryl’s feelings of being with his comrades especially his team of snipers is reflected in not only that they all listen to a music that can be easily sung in a crowd as it could by a individual.

    Gundam Thunderbolt perfected what Code Geass did especially the OVA "Akito The Exiled." Music especially Jazz give the raw emotions that lacks in structured songs. This is why it's very powerful when in sync with animations.

    I think something interesting to point out is that both pilots eventually abandon their preferred fighting style. Going from “a sniper doesn’t need maneuverability” to piloting the single most manoeuvrable MS of the series or from the hectic reactive dodging and piloting to operating an MS that emphasizes toughness and firepower over speed. This might just be me reading to far into it, but this could also be representative of the pilots loss of self.

      I agree, thunderbolt arguably is the reason why I got so much into gundam, even though it’s not the first gundam show I’ve watched. Before I watched thunderbolt, I watched unicorn and I really enjoyed it, it was brutal, the animation was gorgeous, the action was great, and the mobile suit designs are iconic in the franchise. BUT the second half of unicorn wasn’t good in my opinion, the characters weren’t interesting at all and the ending felt cheap and out of nowhere, and rewatching the show while helped improve my view on it, the show didn’t improve that much in my eyes, and banagher was not a good protagonist and a bit of a white knight to me. But then came thunderbolt. And let me tell you, thunderbolt was something else entirely, the action in the show was insane and fast paced, the music was on an another level, The characters were unreal and truly amazing, the animation look gorgeous, and the mobile suits are my favorite of the entire franchise. And even though I still enjoy unicorn and some others like Ibo, I don’t hold them in high regard as thunderbolt.

    Unusually enough, the anime changed the genre of jazz that Io listened to in the manga. Instead of free jazz, Io listened to John Coltraine's Giant Steps album, which was hardbop. You should probably take a listen to Giant Steps, it's an excellent song.

It's nice to finally have a protagonist who isn't some wafer thin tween that wants to use his trillion dollar death machine for peace while simultaneously killing and/or getting everyone around him killed. Makes a great contrast to how obsessed his zeon enemies are with their dreams and fantasies.

  • @umrasangus
    @umrasangus 4 роки тому +7

    Brilliant analysis! Truly felt all of what is mentioned in the movies. Such genius series that truly knew how to represent dehumanization through war, a topic that fits so well to mecha, almost as Cyberpunk itself. PLUS, it's a real treat listening to both the extremes of music that I adore from the deepest of my heart; wild-hearted Jazz and heavy-hearted Pop. The one that ensures freedom and pushes the ability of one-self and one that speaks the words you can't say, something that many people felt too, and therefore, is so relatable. Having to watch cruelty, awesome mecha, disturbing human relationships with their respective outcomes, and having the pleasure to listen to my music made Thunderbolt one of my favorite Mecha works. Up there standing with Macross, Patlabor, Gurren Laggan, Zone Of The Enders, etc.

    The concert and Anime NYC was incredible. The musicians were fantastic, but for me Ai Kuwabara was the standout. Never seen anyone play piano so... physically except maybe Jerry Lee Lewis, and honestly, she's better. If you've ever watched Motocross or Supercross, the way they manipulate the bike with their arms, hips and legs is the closest analog to how she plays.
    It bounced from seeming sensual to playful to downright violent, like she was making the piano do what she wanted it to. Downright amazing.
    Also really surprising that it was Naruyoshi Kikuchi's first time in New York.

    One thing I'm not sure everyone notices:
    When Daryl debuts the psychozaku, he's listening to "Yes girl", a slow-paced jazz, although it has some catchy lyrics. This is a testament to him incorporating Io's mobility in order to adapt to his new mobile suit.
    Later in the show, at the beggining of Bandit Flower, Io is listening to "Groovy duel" as he uses the railgun. While it still is crazy jazz, some passages have sense of melody and emotion in it, just like he implements Daryl's sniping into his own inventory.

    I think music has a hand in allot of stuff we do, i listen to allot when I draw or play games for me it inspires but also makes me feel loose and focused at the same time.
    It's like being put in an overdrive like trance especially when armed with your emotions. The meaning to something as was as the will sync up, it would explain why boss fights for me in games feel great, it's not the victory of something, but the fight itself, the thrill of battle.
    Same could be said with art, when I draw I like to see what I can do and when music plays I'm inspired to do more for the joy!

      Also, Daryl is the best

      @@MechaTheSpidersometimes the villain is the protagonist like McBeth but in this instance Daryl and Fleming both have they're scas Fleming lost just about everything important to him so he's completely jaded but still has his body in tack while Daryl lost his limbs but still has people he cares about. They are 2 sides of the same coin and honestly in the end it feels like both see the other as broken.

    That instrument at 3:15 is not a wind instrument, but a brass. More specifically, it's a trumpet. I know that texture, no matter how distorted, because I play one.

    • @TheCartoonCipher

      Sorry, tried to generalize woodwind and brass by using a simple word and I guess it wasn't really applicable :(

    • @speedstriker
      @speedstriker 6 років тому +5

      No worries. That said, I think the prominence of trumpets in Thunderbolt's soundtrack is pretty relevant to your point about Io Fleming's individualistic personality since the sound of brass instruments can be manipulated a lot more than a woodwind.

    • @a-blivvy-yus
      @a-blivvy-yus 6 років тому +3

      Actually the video was correct. The classification of "wind" instruments encompasses both woodwind and brass. For a trumpet to be a brass instrument, it is by definition *ALSO* a wind instrument. And the manipulation of sound varies a lot more on individual instruments than you give it credit for. There's a lot of brass instruments which don't have the variability of a trumpet, and a few woodwinds which come pretty close to it.

      Macross delta made it terrible. Frontier did it alright. But they aren't exactly fighting but gave the pilots more adrenaline. The original macross doesn't have music as a weapon until the last part of the Macross. As it made the alien race change there mind. As they knew that the war was usless. Plus, is just an AI brainwashing people.
