I used to ask my mom to come water my phals (~70, mostly summer bloomers) when I'm away for more than a week in the summer. I have been coming back to bacterial infections and necroses on the youngest leaves, because of the stale air and abundant watering. I quit that and now I ask her to stop by every now and then to open windows and even switch on AC on the hottest days. My lesson learned - phals do fine without water, and they'd appreciate more if they can be offered some ventilation instead.
Thank you for your videos ! I tried "The wet feet' trick" before heading off on vacation. Upon my return, everything was in great shape, and my Phalaenopsis looked stunning after 18 days!
I soak my orchids before I leave now. I used to have to write out detailed instructions, number each pot, and make a calendar for my roommate to keep them alive. She would then post a photo of them each day on her story and get feedback from her followers on if they were still alive. 😂
I can attest to not having someone care for your orchid. Even with strict, written instructions eight of ten orchids were a pile of goo. 🌱 Self-watering with a wick...I found that the air gap between the water reservoir and the plant-pot needs to be closed or minimized so the water in the wick doesn't evaporate into the air....so your version of the plant-pot sitting directly atop of the reservoir works best. • Great topic!
Omg!! Thanks for the heads up. I have a huge problem with my going away time and my lovely orchids. I don't trust anyone to water them while I'm away :)
When I go on holiday for 2 weeks I tend to fill my bath up with several inch’s of water with a couple of pumps of orchid feed mixed in the water and soak them for like a hour or so then leave them to drain for a couple of hours then put them back . I find that works amazing for my plants . I’ve don’t that for the past 3 years and my orchids are really happy
Just as I’m about to leave for a week! I’m bringing my dendrobium with me since she needs a lot of water but my cattleya will do fine I assume since they like to be dry
What about paphiopedilums in a mix of bark, volcanic rock and sphagnum? Would you use the water in the bottom or the wicker method? Great videos, thanks so much for sharing all your knowledge and experience.
hi Danny this episode could not have come more timely as I am leaving tomorrow and practically was losing sleep over them. I do have my kind neighbor keeping an eye but I still have one question that is tormenting me. I have windows almost to all directions and my phals stay on eastern window at all times but I move my cattleyas and vandas from eastern window to southern window for the day and I bring them back to Eastern for the sunset hours(this NYC 5th fl apt) . if I can only choose one window for them given your water hacks. which windows are the move for little less than one month away? prolonged mild morning and sunset or shorter period but super bright mid day sun? I hope I hear from you bye tomorrow afternoon!! thank you so much 🤗
I'm not Dany, and I always defer to her judgement. In case she doesn't answer in time… I'd leave your plants where they won't get sunburned or overheated. Orchids can survive a while with inadequate light, but not very long if they get cooked or overexposed every day. They may be a touch light starved when you come back, or not, but they'll be more likely to be alive. For future trips, I'd look into getting a few artificial lights and putting them on a timer.
@@galamander_1327 thank you…yes i think that makes a lot of sense. inevitably there will be a heat wave in august. and also i was starting to research on barrina light for the future. can it be installed by the window too as supplemental light ? thank you again 🙏🏽
@@kazumakino8812 For sure, artificial lights can be used next to a window. That's where I use mine, because my orchids were growing sideways next to a window, and with the extra overhead light they're more or less growing upright again. The only thing I watch out for making sure the orchids have enough hours of relative darkness, so they have time to photosynthesize. (Like cacti, a lot of orchids photosynthesize during nighttime.)
I'm watching your videos for a while, i have some very big orchids that tend to go dry more often than i like. (I have to water them 2-3 times a week in summer, instead of just one) and i was thinking about switching to semi-hydro. I was wandering what's your oldest orchid in semi-hydro. My oldest phalaenopsis is now 6 years old and has 12 leaves, so I know it likes the traditional growing method, but it would be nice not be around them all the time watering 😂😂😂 Moving them back and fort from the sink every 2-3 days it's a bit too much for me. Thank you 🙂
This is odd. My orchids are in moss and bark. My vacations are typically at least a month long. Is there a system you suggest for long term watering systems
One of my phals put out a flower spike but it only developed 2 flower buds and then it stopped growing. The 2 buds seem to be developing nicely. Any idea why it stopped at only 2 buds? Last year it had 2 spikes, each with at least 5 flowers.

Great to see the systems mentioned again :) Very innovative on the other setups too!
Thank you so much for your videos I always learn so much!! 😀
I love that watering can with the long skinny spout!! And the Stay Weird tshirt is super cute 😍
Your Orchids look awesome#! 😍 Greetings from Poland!
I am really happy with my 3dping works perfectly.
Love the topic, thanks for all the ideas.😁

Great advice
Which method do you suggest for orchids in bark in terracotta pots
Hello Madam. What is the best medium in which to grow Orchids?
Bark but if it’s a very hot dry area try a bit more moss but not too much
@@Peterrdee Thank you.
Great video. I will definitely do the self-watering trick with sphagnum moss set up... I just worry about a mealy bug infestation when I come back...

Not on the side with mid-day sun! Hope I made it on time! 😊

I soaked my vanda right before a 9 day vacation and forgot her in the water the whole time, and she was just fine

Great suggestion. Now I can go on a curse. Wait, I still can’t go how can I feed my gold fish while I am gone? Oh well. 👍👍🙏
And I was sooo worried to leave my 8 orchids without water for a week (some have a 2/3 day between water regimen) :’) I guess they’ll be fine
What about mounts?
Just like the Vanda 😊
Thank you ☺️
Thank you!
