He had great views on honour and a life as a Kingsguard. Those expectations for himself have been broken. I truly dislike that the fans of the show collectively hate him (they harass the actor Fabien Frankel) and I hate that that the show portrays him as some sort of bitter resentful ex (some incorrectly call him an incel) when in actuality he's the only one in the show not insane. Cole is looked down on by the highborn because he's low born and of dornish descent, so he has to combat that racism while also walking a tightrope with Alicent & Rhaenerya because the power dynamic is flipped, if he is caught with either all they have to say is he "forced himself on me" and he is done for (either sent to the wall or executed). So he compartmentalized his relationships with both as his "duty" when he was with Rhaenerya first he thought what they had was love until she revealed that she covets the throne over any relationship and when he was with Alicent he mimicked her disdain for Rhaenerya's behavior (you can see evidence of him mimicking Alicent's disdain when he insulted Rhaenerya too much and he was compelled to apologize to Alicent because he forgot his place).
Right dudes playing his role. Some people can't introspectively analyze character arcs and their journey which shows that most audiences are used to the classic Disney hero and villain based themes. Wonderful portrayal by Fabian and a well written end for a literal live and die by the sword poetry.

This concern doesn’t apply to a woman because her children are indisputably hers. Since Rhaenyra is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, her children are her heirs regardless of who their father is.

Besides, there are still other men with the Targaryen last name, like Daemon, who had kids with Rhaenyra, so the name will still be there.
