A living cultural landscape is nestled into the remote slopes of the Cordillera mountain range in the Philippines. It serves as an example of sustainable agriculture with traditional techniques. For 2,000 years the mountains of Ifugao province have been cultivated with terraced fields that climb thousands of feet.
These fields, and the knowledge to farm them, have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. They have long been central to the survival of the Ifugao peoples but they also occupy a central importance within their culture. Entire communities cooperate on seasonal systems of planting, pest control, and harvest. The coordinated efforts are tied to lunar cycles and sometimes accompanied with religious rituals.
The UNESCO site encompasses five different clusters of rice terraces in the area. The Banaue Rice Terraces are the most famous of the lot. Banaue is approximately 230 miles north of Manila, and buses depart daily from the capital. It can take up to ten hours to make it up the mountainous terrain to the rice fields.
Take a guided hiking tour and make sure to pack a picnic for an outstanding view of this remarkable landscape.

These terraces serve as an example of sustainable agriculture with traditional techniques. What intrigues you the most about these parts of the Philippines?
National Geographic beautiful beAches and islands
What intrigues me the most is that, despite the rich agriculture portrayed in this vid, the Philippines is now experiencing serious shortage and sky-high prices of rice and other agricultural goods.
Despite being an agricultural country, we import rice - already insect infested from improper storage. And despite being an archipelago, we import fish - worse, we import fish harvested from our own waters by China, present with formalin.
It's sad that rich resources like this are not really managed well in here.
That is the simplicity of life we had, but we are sustained all year round.
Tribute to our ancestors...
I love my Ifugao culture too.
Thanos. He retired there. 😀✌
what intrigues me is that, these mountains before the terraces has abundant forest. probably thousands of trees have been cut, where do they put those trees after they made the terraces. and what would be on their mind to create such that is tremendously difficult rather than looking for a flat land. definitely not a rice terraces before. our ancestors did not made this just for planting rice alone but for something more significant.
Remarkable indeed! What a breathtaking view. Green landscape, left untouched by technological advancement is simply soothing to eyes. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
Azliana Lyana you could actually go there if you want to am a Filipino also it’s really fun to go there
@Godd Howard It's not the lack of technology that caused the rice shortage. We have the IRRI or International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños Laguna since decades ago where our neighboring Asian countries studied and got technology in growing high yield, pest and weather resistant rice. They adopted those and now they export. We didn't. It's out mindset and regulations, our government, the people that's not working for us.
Abdul-Hadi Muhammad Shu'Aib Makmod IRRI has been doing research from decades ago even before GMO tech became a fad. What I mean is, they do all types of research, and GMO is only a part it.
what do you guys think of the shining shanty houses around such untouched landscape. lol from an airplane above, it looks like a lava river of melted metal over moist ground
@@xXxSkyViperxXx if you've been to the Philippines, you will know that corrugated steel is a common building material for roofs. Lasts longer than thatched roofing, the once traditional material for roofs. Steel may seem unsightly in such context but practicality outweighs aesthetics on this typhoon hit region.
What a beautiful scenery indeed ! So breath taking and absolutely gorgeous . I would love to take a trip there. Thank you for sharing 😊😍

Rice was first cultivated by the chinese circa 10,000 BC.. these rice Terraces is also s o much like the rice terraces in YUNNAN PROVINCE. bec Luzon had a close trading relations with the Sa HUynh culture of southern Vietnam and they grow rice. it occured t o me this is when the Ifugaos learnt it from
@@ericxutxxex not sure if the Ifugaos actually learned to build the terraces from the Chinese, but one thing's for sure is that the Chinese has rice terraces too that's been existing for thousands of years as ive seen on a documentary just yesterday, haven't finished it yet, but China certainly has it too. Try watching "Chinas Mega Projects: Food" here on UA-cam.

It is said that if the steps were put end to end, it would encircle half of the globe.! The Philippines’ Banaue rice terraces are occasionally called the "Eighth Wonder of the World". It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimal equipment, largely by hand.
People at time of the building of those terraces were bigger and stronger than people today.
I am from Ifugao and heard from old folks of many stories about the people.

compared to the rice terraces in China, seriously intimidating
You can throw paper planes from above and it will fly longer
Thanks Nat Geo!
I thought the video was about terrace cultivation in our state-Nagaland (India). Such a stupendous landscape! Would love to visit this place. Also gained a lot of insights about the similarities between South East Asian countries like the Philippines and North East India. Those baskets, traditional shawls and ornaments, rice pounding, rituals, terrace cultivation etc,. are also a major constituent of most tribes in a typical traditional Naga society too.
And we have a province named Naga too.
This is one of the most visited tourist sites in the Philippines. The views are really breath-taking. Unfortunately most young people from these tribes are abandoning their ancestral way of living and are flocking to the cities in search of education and modern convenient life. The result is devastating as the older generation cant cope up with the laborious task of maintaining these ancient rice terraces.
That's sad to know. I really hope that the government, some organizations or any agency shoulder the responsibility to protect and maintain these invaluable heritage sites. ⛰
India, good friend and neighbor to the Philippines.
Its because of the Indian kingdoms that spread throughout South East Asia centuries before the Spanish came to the Philippines. Its in history
Been here! One of the most beautiful places in PH. Want to be back soon! 🥰
Wonderful view of natural beauty
Why does the thumbnail look like a Minecraft video?
Because the banaue rice terraces are mountains with flat handcrafted soil

I am an Ifugao. Our ricefield was badly affected by large earthworms and a certain kind of ell. Both these were introduced by the Department of Agriculture. The coming of new education system destroyed our culture. Education became a tool for the destruction of not only the rice terraces but including our tradition.
I like how they got a Valley Girl to narrate this
Exactly
I've been there. Truly incredible when you see it in the flesh.
Soon i will visit philippines i love your country.
The PHILIPPINES contributed the Rice Terraces architecture in the world. This technique is the original among all of the rice terraces in the world. The one that is in South America, China, Indochina regions. We don`t have towering palaces and colossal wonders like Pagoda palaces in East Asia, Gothic architecture of Europe, Majestic temples of Greece, Pyramids of Egypt but the Philippine ancestry gave the world the Terraces of the Cordillera which is indeed a true and very Pre Hispanic Art of the island. its a good thing the highlanders of the islands were never colonize by the Conquistadores. Pre Hispanic life in the Cordillera would still be very much clear today if you are familiar with the vast number of tribes in there that practices Indigenous culture, arts and crafts like the Head hunting culture of the Kalingas at Bontoc and the infamous FANG OD, tatoo artist

We live on such a beautiful planet.
The Government should not let them built houses on the the ricefield, it destroys the natural view of the terraces.
It would be okay if the houses were those native ones.
