I now have the 150 gpd aquati thanks to watching your videos.
I totally agree,I’ve always said to my friends that ask how to keep a successful reef is to be a keeper of water, everything else will thrive if conditions are right, having said that I still don’t have a RODI unit and get my water from my LFS, I tested his water for the first year and it was at most 00.2 tds so I trust his water, the overall cost of a RODI including the cost of the membrane’s make it cheaper for me to get it from my LFS and I get 125 L a week, great topic 👍🏻
Hello mate, thanks for that, yeah its something that not everyone thinks about when keeping reef tanks, some LFS can provide perfect or near to perfect RODI but I'd still rather make my own, I know that up here in Scotland it is definitely a lot cheaper to buy a RODI unit and change the filters every 6 months that buy water from the LFS, the RODI units and filters from aquati are really cheap too so makes it much better,
I guess the main thing is as with everything in this hobby, do things that work for you, there are so many different ways to do things in this hobby and very few of them are "wrong"
Thanks for your support mate! 👍
Very useful and clear information. Thank you.
Thanks for the video as i just brought one from your link
No problem at all, hopefully the video was of some use to you! 👍
Great in depth video Ross. Am changing all my filters on my unit this week. Bought from Aquati using your code of course!! Also thinking of buying a membrane flush kit for it. Another job is to move the TDS inlet meter from the tapwater to after the membrane. Keep the vids comming bud.
Thanks mate! Tried to give as much information as possible on this one without it being too much, its a fine line, yeah I have the flush kit and it's brilliant, ive also moved my tds meter to one before the membrane and one after, thanks for the continued support mate! 👍
How easy is it to add a flush system and taps for on and off. I ask you as you don't go around the houses. Good work on your channel Ross.
Hey Ross it’s about time someone did a video like this! I now know exactly how mine works and when to replace parts, looking forward to seeing your new aquarium 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Steve, at least it has helped someone then, I know at first when someone mentioned RODI I didn't have a clue but now I feel I know enough about them I wanted to try help others!
Hi there i have one? How do you store the rodi unit when not in use excellent video by the way
Couldnt say it better myself I’ve always thought that !! Well said
Thanks Julie, yeah its too easy to overlook things like this sometimes!
Awesome in depth video brotha!! 👊
Thank you very much mate! Appreciate it! 👍
Great vid bud and great info loads of ppl don’t understand the main use of the rodi units you explained it all really well
Thanks mate, I tried my best haha, hopefully it made sense and covered the main points
@@BeardedReef ye it did was really well put Togther and plenty of info but to help ppl pic what they need plus 10% code woop woop !!! Lol
Thanks mate appreciate it! Yeah the code does help
Some great info Ross, nice one 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Paul! Appreciate it! 👍
Great information bro 👍. I have a question though, I have a Ro/di system but I accidentally plugged the tubing wrong, thing is the DI resin is totally wasted but the 2 other filters are fine. Not sure about the membrane. The problem is that the water was at 200 tds and had a faint bad smell. Do you think I have to replace the membrane or just replace the DI resin. Please help I got a big water change coming. Thank you 👍
Thank you what way had you plumbed it? You could flush the membrane but depending what has went through it you might need to replace it, for all the cost involved you might be better replacing the filters, membrane and DI resin just to be safe
@@BeardedReef I think, I placed the waste water tube in the membrane, Im not too sure, I didnt even know how to set it up in the first place, could I send you a picture of how I have it right now through email?
That should have just recirculated then? Yeah you can, I can't put my email on here as youtube blocks the comments but drop me a message on instagram
@@BeardedReef Ok Ill send you the pictures thank you 👍😁
@@BeardedReef OK, I sent you the pictures on Instagram
Great info on this vid Ross also Aquati is in kirkcaldy 10 mins drive from me lol .What GPD size did you go for ? .I'm not sure what size to go for
Thank you, yeah they are 🏴 ive got the 150gpd 5 stage unit but have just upgraded to the 300gpd 5 stage unit
Cool that should fill your 25l container in under 1 hour lol .I was thinking of just keeping it mobile like yours for the time being (im going to be putting in a new kitchen next summer) ,when your finished using the unit do you just shut the valves off and keep the water in the unit or do you drain it of before storing the unit till the next Time you use it ?
@@rabmccammon5691 I always shut the valves and keep the unit wet, that way the filters and membrane last longer, I dont think letting them dry out is good for them. I like keeping mines portable and just storing it away in a cupboard, so much easier
Thanks again for your help Ross 👍
No problem at all! 👍
Hi Ross just a question about the waste pipe. Do I leave that flow or do I need to turn that off
Hello Andi, the waste pipe needs to remain open and flowing when the unit is in use
Super educational video. Enjoying the mix of videos on this channel mate 👍. You might of convinced me to dip my hand in my pocket 🤔🤣.
Thanks mate, ive tried to mix things up a little, you should definitely get one, they are brilliant! 👍
@@BeardedReef massive fan from day 1. Look forward to our weekly catch-up - roll on Friday!
Thank you so much for all the support, it really does mean a lot! See you on Friday! 👍
Hi, great video by the way and lots of useful information, I've been on the fence for about 15 years if I should buy one as I've only had nanos and don't do many water changes. But I currently have 2 tanks and I've used shop bought rodi forever for top offs and shop bought pre mixed and collected by myself natural sea water for water changes. Now i think it's time I take the plunge and make my own salt, i know the natural stuff is free but i don't trust the coast around Devon at the moment. I would like to know though if you know how long an rodi unit can stay unused between uses as I won't need to use it that often once I've made what i need, maybe 100 to 150l at a time. That would last me a while for top offs and changes. Thanks. Oh also why did you move your tds meter before and after the membrane as opposed to after di?
Hello, thank you very much for the comment! You should definitely get one, it makes things so much easier and more accurate too, you know exactly where your water starts from every time!
When it comes to making water, you will be fine to leave it for 3 or 4 weeks as long as the system is kept wet, I add valves to all 3 lines so that I can create a wet filled sealed system after use and I store it wet, that way it is ok, just flush for 5 mins before and after each use,
As for TDS meters, I had mines on the feed line and product line but I moved it to one on the line before the membrane and the other one on the outlet, I do plan to change to a 3 probe system so I can have one after the 3 filters, one after the membrane and one after the resin, that way I know when each component needs replaced quicker
Hope that helps
@@BeardedReef thanks, that makes sense if you're getting a 3 probe. I'm looking on the site you suggest for 1 and looking to get the 5 stage as its actually cheaper that the 4 stage I was looking at elsewhere. I think I just need to justify it to the wife. I'm sure if I say I'll put a tap before the di so she can have better water for her coffee machine she'll let me get one.
Yeah the Aquati units are brilliant, and much cheaper than elsewhere, I'd recommend the 5 stage 150gpd unit as a minimum
Hi I bought a aquati 5 stage r o d I unit am having a few problems understanding how it works aquati weren't very helpful. I have low tap pressure so I bought water pressure pump and and gage also flush valve kit I would very much appreciate if you could help me on how to install it correctly thanks Davie
Good video Ross. I’ve been on the fence if I should buy rodi water from my lfs or buy a rodi unit. My lfs is close and the water is fairly cheap, but I like what you said that you have nobody to blame if things go wrong but yourself. I also feel like if someone’s gunna continue and grow with the hobby with larger tanks it’s gunna become a essential item anyways so might as well buy it now.
Thanks mate, im not saying all LFS water is bad but I'd much rather make my own and know exactly what's going on, I'd definitely recommend getting one
I have the 5 stage unit , if I test the finished water with a refractor meatier at 0 ,is this still a good way to see if something is going wrong, as it will rise up the number,
Hello Phillip, no a refractometer is used to test the salinity of the water, this won't show the level of TDS, you will need to get a TDS meter, you could have water that will read zero on a refractometer but could be over 300tds still
I always wanted a RO system but I use distilled water on my tank it works fine for me
I was always advised not to use distilled water as the boiling process removes elements such as calcium, iron, and magnesium that support the biological system, RODI is a much better option in my opinion, but if your fish and corals are healthy then it must be working for you 👍
@@BeardedReef yes sir well with the water change it should add all the elements but I do dose calcium and a part A and B element solution that contains everything the fish and coral need
As long as your fish and coral are healthy then thats brilliant, just continue to do what works for you mate, there are so many different ways to do things in this hobby, there isn't a right and wrong way,
