    I was smiling. I was ooohhhing and aaahhhing. Then the mention of a pumpkin scone scandal. 😅 I am telling myself it will be ok. Just look at all the beautiful colors in Katie’s video and breathe. Thank you for all the historical knowledge and incredible talent you share with us.

      It is so not okay! There have been no pumpkin scones in my life this week because I have been too busy to bake any - thanks for nothing Starbucks. It's a good thing my father wasn't a guest or it would have been a full hour of the three of us complaining about scones. Which I'm pretty sure means I have a great life if that's what I consider a problem...

    Such a fun and informative video, as always! Loved hearing about your Mom’s experiences at the Attic and seeing her haul and WIP. What a fun trip and experience for you two to share. Your class is so tempting, especially since I know I would learn SO much. Thinking about the time commitment, while teaching. Perhaps a summer intensive I could start in June. Thank you for all you do and share! -Carolyn

      Thank you! So I am obviously a biased source, keep that in mind, but I think you would really enjoy the class - particularly the different materials and how they behave. Tambour and GST are not used in cross stitch at all, but even a beautiful filament silk gives a very different appearance in long and short stitch than it does in full crosses. The nuances of the color shading and the variety of materials I think would really appeal to you as much as the project itself. As to time commitment - not a concern. It can be easily set aside for the summer or whenever you have time for it. I'm all about learning on your own schedule, when it works for you, because we all have lives and this is supposed to be fun. If you're on a deadline, it's not fun. Doing it when you feel inspired and have the time to give to it is fun!

    Thanks for another wonderful flosstube. It was nice to see your mom and hear about her experience at summer school. I like the way you approach stitching, and teaching. Your kit and instructions for the Elizabethan Valentine were wonderful, now all I have to do is start it lol. I will be in the coming year, got waylaid by health nonsense this year. Like you, I would definitely sign up for a casket, with no inkling of what was in store. That's part of the fun, and the challenge. Getting good at fancy stitches, cutwork, beading etc. requires practice but I always think it's doable. Next year's project is looking pretty 🌺 . Take care, and happy stitching, Arleen

      Thank you! The Elizabethan Valentine will be ready for you whenever you're ready to start - it doesn't go bad in the box! Conquering the fear of failure is by far the hardest part!

I realize it would be about a 2 hour drive for you, but we usually have about 25 stitchers, including Katherine of Stitching in Costume, Angi the Tiny House Stitcher, and Sarah from Sarah’s Stitchy Spot. I absolutely love Queen Anne's Pyn Pillow. My stack of unfinished (and unstarted) projects is already huge, so I'm half hoping you sell out before my willpower gives out because I'll probably cave sooner or later. 😄
    I do think I"m going to have to try working some plaited braid with gilt silk twist! That would look very cool. I just got done with three different projects that used different variations of plaited braid stitch, including a "both sides alike" project using Melinda Sherbring's amazing double-sided plaited braid. (It's really no more difficult than normal plaited braid, aside from getting it started.) But all three projects used 371 gold wire … I'm ready to use a different thread! I'm hoping to visit both Needle in a Haystack and Lacis at the beginning of December and I need to stock up on fun threads to play with. 😃
    Blue-green looks like a good fit for the grey vine border in O Sweet Humility so it seems very plausible that it could have been that color originally. The pink/green combination really does scream Katie. It will be fun to see how it ends up using your colors!
    Good to know about the wire guards. Yay, more stuff I need to buy! 🤣 And clearly to justify paying for shipping I should also buy some more beads too, right?
    Your mom sounds like she's suffering from a touch of imposter syndrome. Her stitching is absolutely wonderful and she's very accomplished!

    • @katiestrachanembroidery
      @katiestrachanembroidery  Рік тому +1

      Okay, said with affection and totally without judgment but that is some seriously convoluted reasoning. Why not just do braid stitch with GST on the pyn pillow, instead of finding a different project to try it out on?!?!?! Give in and answer the siren call of the pyn pillow! You won't regret it - I'm not a fan of hard sales jobs, but I do believe that this is a really special project with the dazzling silver background and the beautiful silk flowers. Also, GST Vitruve is some fabulous stuff that you can't get elsewhere - it's my thread and IMO it's the best green in the line. Of course I would say that because I picked it, I'm biased, but I do love it.
      You are very right about my mom and it's more than a touch of imposter syndrome. She is an incredibly accomplished seamstress and tailor who can stitch anything she wants, but she always thinks she's going to come on here and give a false impression of herself, that she's another me. Also some of our crowd at Summer School were sporting some monster sampler finishes - our friend Grace had several huge Gigi Rs with her, at least three people were working on a Peacock, a Unicorn, a Badger, and of course I had the gigantic Vierlande sampler with me. Not to mention all of Jean's masterpieces just littering the Attic...

My 13 year old self would tell everyone (and my grown up self) to just dive right in with teenage confidence. I loved your talk about your color theory for O Sweet Humility sampler. Why not ask Kathleen to see the back of the sampler? That may answer some of the color questions you, me and other sampler stitchers are wondering about. Also, being a purist, I would like to see the original thread colors. I am stitching the sampler with NPI (and there are a couple of grays)! I will stitch the sampler this way and would also like to stitch it using your colors OR if back colors are shown, perhaps a third time. Am I crazy? Your Mom is delightful and it is always a treat to see her on your channel. Love all you do.❤ Nancy

    • @katiestrachanembroidery
      @katiestrachanembroidery  Рік тому

      You should definitely email her if you're curious - I'm happy enough moving forward with my own choices and in this instance the back may be less informative than usual. If you look at the front there's very little damage and most of the colors are intact, so what you would see depends on what caused the color to leech out of the thread. It might look similar on the back, although I stand by my assertion that no matter what is or isn't on the back, it wasn't gray when Eliza stitched this in 1835. That's a fugitive dye. But no, not crazy, because I think there's so much room to have fun with this one - there's enough intact color to get a vague picture, and then what you do with it from there is a choose your own adventure story.

    I am so happy to hear that the gray in O Sweet Humility was not appealing to you as well. I started this project in May and set it aside because I did not like the colors. I am just not ready to create a color conversion that makes me happy.

    • @katiestrachanembroidery
      @katiestrachanembroidery  Рік тому +1

      It's an interesting color question - I find the antique on the cover of the chart so appealing, but when it comes down to brass tacks I didn't want to go anywhere near the gray, even though that's very definitely gray on the piece that I like so much. I will finish my own color conversion at some point, which can be used in 100/3 or Surfine, so that's another alternative if you don't want to create your own. Or just sub out some of what was bothering you - swapping in pink and green for gray is a pretty easy fix. But I do understand losing your mojo on a project - just a thought!

      @katiestrachanembroidery The overall sampler was very appealing to me when it was released as a kit on Cross Stitch Antiques. I bought it immediately. I am all for the pinks and greens. I think it will be an excellent birthday present to myself in November. I look forward to watching your progress and color choices.

    • @katiestrachanembroidery
      @katiestrachanembroidery  Рік тому +6

      Thank you! The secret is not to use steam. This only works on materials that are color stable - test first to make sure nothing runs - but spritz lightly with cold water, then press with your iron, dry, on the linen setting. It makes your linen look like glass. And then once I finish, I wet block everything to square it up - I have a tutorial on this, #8 in the Simple Harmony series. You can find it under the Simple Harmony tutorials playlist if you're interested. It's a really easy way to make your finishes look really smooth, even, and beautiful - improves the result so much without any extra effort while stitching.
