Exploring stitching, surface embroidery, and textiles generally. Informed by my love of literature and history - a subject that is quite literally always in the background.
Flosstube: Ornamentations #87 - Let’s talk about Gobelins, and Christmas stitching!
Ornamentations (noun): 2. That in which the process of ornamenting is embodied; the ornaments which adorn a thing collectively; ornament in general Or, in music, the grace notes that embellish a melodic line.
Kits are available at katie-strachan.com/shop
The 2023 Prairie Schooler Santa is $54 and includes the ground linen, silk satin backing fabric, full spools of 7 silk threads, a full card of Fuzzy Stuff and #22 chenille needle to use with it, and sequins and beads for embellishment: in short, everything but the chart.
My tutorial on using Fuzzy Stuff to make a Santa beard is here: ua-cam.com/video/Em3LGdCZktY/v-deo.html
And on using crystal pendants to embellish an ornament hanger: ua-cam.com/video/A76El_Tn4UI/v-deo.html
Kits for Cardinal Kin & Stacy Nash Wonderful Life pinkeep drum are also available

Tutorial: Fuzzy, sparkly, fabulous Santa beards
Переглядів 3,3 тис.Місяць тому
This tutorial will teach you how to use the thread Fuzzy Stuff to add a fuzzy, sparkly beard to your Prairie Schooler santa, or another cross stitch piece that could use some sparkly and fluffy embellishment. This method works best with longer stitches, so consider the size of the area to be stitched: a beard is perfect, small furry cuffs can be a bit difficult. All materials used in this tutor...

Have you any thoughts on why white thread doesn't sit well ? I find it is not only on white but on many light colours. I stitch so carefully with light colours, always left to right and top to bottom and do all my /// legs before I come back with the \\\ and don't jump around yet they don't look as good as the darker colours so it must be the colour of thread in itself - either the dye takes different or light. It seems to me and others have said the same, it is the way light bounces off the light colours. Very difficult to get Gobelins in the UK but would be interested to try it and hear your thoughts. Thank you.
Beautiful ornaments and your Christmas tree is gorgeous! Hope to visit some of your prior video’s and learn some beading technique’s….Happy New Year 2025
Thank you! There are dedicated tutorials on several, you can find them under the tutorials playlist on the main channel page - enjoy!
Happy Holidays! Another lovely, exciting, informative video! I just purchased a little piece of Cedar River linen Albarium, 56 count, I think I will use this for the Pineberry Lane Merry Christmas Hanging Sampler, chart is in the mail!
Happy holidays! That'll be wonderful - mine is finished and hanging on the tree and I just love it, such a great piece.
The other side of your normally quiet videos is coming through and I love it. It’s the first bit of Christmas cheer that has truly been a joy for me. Christmas obviously gets you ecstatic with smiles and happiness overflowing! Thank you.
Thank you! I'm glad it made you smile - I love Christmas and am so happy t0 share that with others.
Where do you buy the bijoux threads? Is the bronzy mettalic selled pyrate?
Any LNS can order them for you but they're in stock at Needle in a Haystack, the Attic, and Hoop & Frame (that I know of, there are probably others as well). And yes, it is Pyrite.
Anyone else’s heart skip a beat when she started spraying water? 😂 Great video. Not a topic that’s covered often so I really appreciate it and learned a lot. Thank you!
Totally safe if your materials are color stable! I do always recommend testing a swatch first if you're at all unsure though, better safe than sorry.
Love your video, you are incredibly talented. Could I please suggest that you hold it s up a bit longer and more still. The camera takes a second to focus and by then you’ve moved on.
Thank you!
את מוכשרת ברמות גבוהות כל הכבוד על הריקמות היפות. חג שמח
Merry, Merry Christmas 🎄 Thank you for the fun video.
Merry Christmas to you as well, and thank you for watching!
Merry Christmas from A Flyers fan🎄But I agree…Gritty is pretty scary & looks just like former Flyer Jake Voracek.
Merry Christmas! I never saw the Voracek likeness but you're right, just a little more orange!
I love your joy of needlework and all the different threads and materials you show us! I do wish you would hold things up longer and more still. My eyes don't focus quite so fast!
Thank you! I do try - when you're in front of the camera, it feels like you've held things up forever and your arm will fall off, then I review the video (I watch it myself before posting, to write the notes) and it looks like it just flashed it at the camera. Huge disconnect between the experience of filming, and of viewing...
Merry Christmas Katie! I just love seeing all of the beautiful ornaments you have made over the years. Your stitching is stunning, and you truly have a gift with color and beads, choosing just the right combinations of colors and sparkle! I want to try doing some of the beaded accents on some of my stitching, and will look back to get links to where to find the beads you use! I look forward to seeing your Christmas with your family and the silly hats! What a fun tradition. Have a wonderful holiday, and see you in 2025.
Thank you so much! Definitely try out the beading - it's a fun and easy accent that really adds a lot to a finish!
Gorgeous tree and of course you need a sparkly Robin, it’s beautiful. Love all the finishes. That Gritty hat is awesome, even though we live in PA, we are not Flyers fans. Enjoy your time with your family! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Thank you! A very happy new year to you and yours as well!
As a first-time viewer, I will say that I enjoyed your video. Your stitching is beautiful, as close to perfect as I've seen. I got a little dizzy at the moving of items forward and backward from the camera (I know, getting good focus is hard), so I viewed your video in parts. Nevertheless, great video.
Thank you so much - welcome to my channel, which is admittedly imperfect!
Gorgeous tree! I'm a fellow Nutcracker addict 😊 I'm so sad that the gingerbread house won't be offered publicly. I really wanted to do it next year... maybe she'll change her mind someday??
Thank you! I hope so - it's a wonderful project!
Thank you so much for sharing your stitching and finishing hints. Just fabulous! Merry Christmas Katie!
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Merry Christmas!
Your Christmas tree is wonderful! Could you share how you finish the back of your ornaments? Couldn’t find it in any video, they look so soft and light. Thanks
Thank you! I lace (or if I'm being lazy, use double sided fusible web) silk over bristol paper, then slip stitch it to the ornament to finish it. You can see the general method in my pinkeep finishing tutorial - just imagine that one of the sides of the pinkeep is an ornament.
@ thank you
Wishing you and your family a wonderful yummy stitchy Xmas day. Looking forward to seeing the hat that your brother gets you. Loved the jellyfish one in the past. I am so inspired by your tree again this year.
Thank you! I love that hat too - sometimes I show up on Christmas wearing it just as an excuse to pull it out. A classic!
Katie, may you and your family have a merry Christmas. Thank you for bringing good cheer with your fabulous handcrafted ornamented tree. 🎄💕🎄
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
Thank you Katie for sharing your beautiful Christmas Tree. Have a wonderful Christmas enjoy your family and stitching.❤God bless.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Hi Katie, I came back to this video because I could have sworn I asked a question about your source for the bright red silk faille fabric for your project bag and you answered (if I remember correctly, it wasn't Mood) but for the life of me I can't find my comment. Would you mind saying again which store you got that fabric from?
It was Mood! They have a full color range of faille online
@@katiestrachanembroidery thank you!
Wonderful floss tube Katie and awesome finishes. Although I ordered your DOVE several weeks ago, i ordered your Prairie Schooler Santa Kit while watching this video. My LNS for 20 yrs was also Cathe at NIHS and between Cathe and the class ( Tudor/Stuart Goldwork Sampler) with Tricia I fell in love with Gobelins as well. Happy Stitching and a very Merry Christmas to you!
Thank you, and enjoy! Cathe has done so much for the stitching community in bringing great, less used threads to a wider audience. Also she's delightful!
😍🎄😍
Thank you!
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas with your family! The Christmas tree tour was FANTASTIC! 🎀🎄🎀
Thank you so much - merry Christmas!
All beautiful! Love the Robin! 🎄
Thank you so much!
Great Idea, Mom's are so Smart!! I plan to stitch a lot on Christmas Day, crossing my fingers. Have good HAT fun.
Enjoy! And truly, moms are so smart, mine is a genius!
Hi Katie. That was a beautiful and funny video. Your sense of humour is coming out more and more in your videos. You are such an inspiring stitcher and finisher! Have a very Merry Christmas!
Thank you, that's very kind! It's hard for me to be natural on camera - talking to an empty room as if there's an audience is the oddest thing...
When stitching with Gobelins can you use 36 count linen or 32 count?
Yes! Two strands (just as you would with any other thread) for 32 count, one for 36, although I would recommend stitching on a Zweigart base 36 count in a hoop, qsnap, or frame. Zweigart linens have thinner linen threads, and the Gobelins definitely benefits from structure, to give you something to pull against when you tighten the stitches.
@ thank you Katie for your reply and for your wonderful videos! Merry Christmas!
@@pambutler5437 Merry Christmas!!
❤💚❤ Thank you for all the inspiration you provide all year long with your beautiful creations. Your tree is absolutely gorgeous ❤💚❤
Thank you so much!
Your tree is stunning Katie. I am also starting the Stacy Nash Needlebook. I’m starting mine Christmas Day which is your Christmas Eve🎄🎄
Thank you Karen! Of course you are - great minds and all that! Send photos and I'll do the same
Hi Katie, thank you for sharing the tour of your tree. Loved your creative ornaments. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it - merry Christmas!
❤❤❤🎉🎉
Thank you!
Hi Katie, have a great holiday. I like your tigger that your mom made for you. I hope that your cake goes over well with your dad. I enjoy watching hockey games also, I played on a team as a teen. TTFN
Thank you!
Merry Christmas, Katie! Thank you for all that you do, babe. ❤
Merry Christmas to you too - thanks for watching!
Love your floss tube! Where do you buy your soie surfine, gobelins and 100/3s? Love, love the crystal golden shadow! Very much my taste!!
Thank you! Hoop & Frame, Needle in a Haystack, and the Attic.
Another great tutorial! I look forward to using this method on a future finish!
Thank you - enjoy!
Katie, would you consider making the partridge ornament into a kit for us? I am totally in love with it and it would go great with my dove!
Thank you, but no. It's derived from someone else's work, and has about a million different bits in it. Strictly a personal project!
It would be such an honor to have a Christmas ornament stitched by you Katie. What lucky recipients! Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Thank you so much - happy holidays!
Your tree is so beautiful with all your gorgeous ornaments. So enjoyed this. Merry Christmas 💚 ❤😊
Thank you so much, and Merry Christmas!
The Christmas tree is fabulous! Sending you much joy for the holiday season. The earrings looked lovely. ❤❤
To you as well, and your precious grandchildren! The earrings are just perfect, I cannot thank you enough! What a wonderful complement to the tree itself!
I like your partridge! So much Katie sparkle! The house ornament your mom made is wonderful! I continue to be in love with your daffodils. I understand completely on the need to make leaves as you go, as I usually end up doing all the leaves for a panel at the end, which becomes rather tedious. I should make more of an effort to make leaves as I go along!
Thank you! And yes - do the leaves as you go is such a good rule for life, embroidery or beading. It's so tempting to do all the fun flowers first but that makes it very hard to finish. I did leaves concurrently on my first beaded basket and might have given up in exhaustion if I wasn't facing a deadline when I went to put it together as I still needed a million leaves to make it look properly filled out. It was a solid month of beading nothing but leaves, and I already had a ton of leaves!
What a wonderful video! Your tree is beautiful, love all the versions of Santa’s and Mrs Claus. Did you see Mr. Frosty? He’s adorable. Beaded flowers are gorgeous. Of course after watching your video all I want to do is stitch Christmas ornaments.
Thank you! Definitely stitch all the Christmas ornaments!!
So pretty! Really looking forward to meeting you at The Attic in January :)
Thank you - it will be such a pleasure!
Did your mom mean to leave off Santa's fingers on the Praire Schooler ornament?
She did! She thought with his dark mitten it looked like he was holding a gun - and honestly now she pointed it out I can't unsee it - so modified it. Santa holding up a bank didn't seem in the holiday spirit to her!
@katiestrachanembroidery I totally see it that way now too! Without his fingers, I feel like he's just shaking his fist at the snowflakes instead.
I had to laugh at your Merry Christmas to all ornament. As a Canadian, it would probably go over well here, but I’m pretty sure we would be not wishing Auston Matthews any holiday joy, if the amount of yelling my partner does at him is any indication! Every time I think I’ve done enough Christmas ornaments for the year, I keep making more. My solution for running out of tree is just to have more trees. 🌲
Willy Styles is definitely the only one to earn holiday wishes! We watched a bit of Leafs-Wings the other night and the best and the worst of Matthews was on full display, it must be maddening. And I couldn't agree more on ornaments - you'd think my full tree was cause to sit back and admire, instead I feel the overwhelming urge to make a million ornaments!
Your tree is gorgeous, and filled with so much eye candy! I love your variations of the cross stitched ornaments, and the felt ornaments, OH MY!! You do such beautiful work, and have such a great eye for color. The daffodils for your flower basket are just amazing! I would just love to sit and watch you making these just to see how it is done! I wish you a very Merry Christmas and I know that you will enjoy your family time. Looking forward to 2025!
Thank you! It's very boring, just me sitting and squinting at a petal for hours on end! Peyote stitch is like bricking Legos, but with beads and a needle - no variety at all. Oddly enough, I find it very soothing and hardly notice time passing, but it'd be a lot like watching someone do vast amounts of block stitching!
I chuckled at your ending when you mentioned your tutorial videos.. I went down quite the rabbit hole yesterday after watching your briolette tutorial. I've got all sorts of ideas, and all sorts of ornaments that need finishing.. all I need is time and some more sparkly bits. Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge so freely! 🪡👠
Comments like this make all the work worth it! I'm so glad, and I hope you have a wonderful time exploring all the possibilities of sparkly finishing!
I do beading. That is a rondelle bead, the donut shaped bead. A briolette is more a flattened shaped teardrop with a hole drilled across the top normally. Just fyi. Nice cardinal and like the take on mixed media.
I checked your source. I know Artbeads. They are a good source especially the Austrian crystal. I don’t know why they are calling it a briolette (very misleading) but if you look closer down on the page for style it mentions rondelle. Usually rondelles are listed for the size as 4x6mm or 3x5mm. But I could tell just by your work you are using premium crystal rondelles .The knife edge one is more a bicone not a rondelle. What nonsense of them, utter nonsense. Toho and Miyuki seed beads are considered the best in seed beads in finish and uniformity. Both Japanese beads. Czech are good too. It is if one needed to find a different source for beads, you are using the wrong industry standard names.
Terminology depends on the manufacturer. In this case, they have a briolette bead, which is what you see here, and a top drilled, faceted teardrop which they call a briolette pendant. Roundelle is reserved for knife edge. As my sources are all for that, I used the manufacturer's terms.
They get their terminology directly from the manufacturer.
Can’t wait to see your tree from a distance to appreciate all of your decorations. Hopefully your mum will also show us her tree 😀
We were just talking about that! We're going to film mine again this year and I have some photos of hers, but for the next episode to give me time to add a few more ornaments!
Love all of the sparkly stuff! 🤩 Keep it coming, I am so inspired! 😊
Thank you so much! Definitely sparkles aplenty during the holidays in Katie world!
