  • Submarines can be tricky to build. Fortunately I've found a good way to do that's actually quite easy. Let's build a submarine!

    Just a little thing about the general purpose cards: they don't need to be on a card slot for it to connect to the mainframe.

    This is genius. Literally every other UA-camr is using the hydrofoils to control the depth, where as this build basically uses the hydrofoils for stability whilst the air pump acts basically as a ballast tank would on a real submarine. We want to dive? Fill the ballast tanks with water (buoyancy factor reduced on pump, or pump switched off entirely). We want to surface? Pump the water out of the ballast tanks (buoyancy factor increased in the pumps, or set to max). I think this method is much closer to how submarines work in real life. The PID block is also very good at maintaining altitude, and when you adjust the settings just right (my design at least) will stay exactly where you tell it to. The level of control is brilliant, definitely the best way to build subs in this game. Icing on the cake is that you can use the complex controller to adjust the depth you want easily without having to mess about with menus and settings etc.Thanks for the vid!!!

      This was my problem too. I was looking at videos and found the hydrofoils too unstable. The sub just kept going up and down. Now I want to stress that what you're seeing in this video is not my idea, I simply took it from the forums and turned it into a vid ;). The one thing I'd like to improve is not to have the main control room flood when the ship submerges, but unfortunately you can't have the PID ignore 1 pump that would keep the con dry.

      Why wouldnt anyone do it like this, the first sub I built dove by reducing air pump bouyancy.

    This is amazing. I've never seen anyone do submarines this way before. It's weird that nobody else mentions using PIDs to level out the sub with hydrofoils, almost as if they aren't aware that it's an option. Which is double strange because I'm pretty sure real submarines use ballast tanks hooked up to computer sensors, the same way you're using the sub's main hull as a ballast tank.

    I haven't played the game but from what I see here it seems you could do away with the hydrofoils entirely by dividing up your ballast tank areas into smaller sections.

    havent made a sub in a while, may restart adventure mode and see if I can stay in 1st area. The lag had made me leave not the types spawned. Idea is to hunt and killem to keep fps stable hahaha. About subs, I use a number of ACBs to detect stuff infront of them like ground, elevation and so on which will override the hydrofoils for x seconds. Same goes for left and right directions, and the AI has no issues. With any explosive missile or trop, they need to detonate in such a way that they will not kill off each other as you lose damage or even the whole missile its self. Keep up the vids :)

      The primary issue with carriers is that craft move erratically and will often crash into the carrier walls before exiting. You can still build small craft at the edge of the ship, but it doesn't look much like a carrier when done that way.

    You can use passive radar on a sub. I generally use 5 2 meter pistons to make a periscope or more, based on depth. Mine run at around -58m. Once an enemy is detected the periscope raises a total of 60 meters via ACB's, allowing for radar control of my cruise missiles instead of having to rely on IR or beam riders. Also, you don't need to use connectors. the game allows accepts a transmitter hooked right onto the detection equipment. You just have to SHIFT replace the block as it won't let you build on the receiver itself.

    btw I'm afraid to tell you you're going to need to keep on moving no matter what.
    Dive planes control pitch, if you have no speed, you have no pitch control. sure you'll have depth control but you might end up with a funy looking perfectly submerged, but ass-sitting, upwards facing, submarine in no time, if the center of mass happens to be 5cm behind the center of buoyancy. Or the opposite if it's in front. As there's no real way to keep those two perfectly alligned (not in the game, not in real life either even while in real life trim tanks can be used to keep the thing at check), the dive planes you need no matter what to keep pitch control. And as the hydrofoils don't work stopped, you need to be moving constantly. A totally stopped sub is a sub that loses attitude control. It's just inevitable, so you can be moving very very slowly while keeping pitch control...but you'll need to be moving. If you stop, either your ass or your nose will start tilting down.
    The first complicated thing I made was the submarine on my channel. I didn't use PIDs on that one (though I should come back and use them for the hydrofoils, as is much better than the control blocks for that purpose). Personally though I think for depth keeping the Air pumps commanded by control blocks are better and allow for much faster depth changes than the PID, which tends to react slower to depth changes. But the PID also works well (obviously ;)) so in the end is a matter of preference.

      Yeah pitch is a very complicated issue on subs. The only option I'm missing on the PIDs to use the pumps for both trimming (provided you have several compartments) and depth control.

      won't happen. Even in modern subs complete pitch control without movement is wishful thinking, and they do have a lot of ballast and trim tanks to change the submarine balance. It's a mere problem of weight distribution, a crewman far on the bow of the ship moving 2m forward to check out an instrument can change the balance enough for the sub to be out of balance. You need your CoB and CoM directly on top of each other down to the milimeter, or the balance will be lost (obviously tiny differences will cause a very small momentum, but still there will be a momentum that over time will pitch the sub up or down).
      Real subs have even some ballast tanks the size of a shoebox for tiny trim adjustements. Obviously those you can't replicate in FtD, and even if you could, even with those real subs need to move to keep pitch control. It's a matter of dynamics and how things work. No speed=no pich control=out of balance sub. There's no real way around it. Subs can keep control moving at very small speeds indeed, but still they must move. Same in FTD. Don't hold your breath for anythign that will change it because...well, it just won't happen.
      the only way around it is adding propellers to the bottom of the bow and stern of your submarine to get extra "active" pitch control. You can set the PID to use them for you to keep pitch stability even while stopped. But those propellers will make your FtD sub dynamically very different from real life ones (which obviously don't use those kind of gadgets to keep balance :)). Other than that, you're stuck with moving or losing pitch control :).

      ramjb you can put separate ballast tanks at each end to make active pitch trim. Use separate ACBs for each one detecting pitch angle and adjusting the tanks accordingly.
      Or you can have the CoB significantly above the CoM.

    tip: if its says output saturated !!! you should make the sub more heavy whit lead blocks becuase its to light

    I don't have the option for hydrofoil pitch and airpump alt in my PIDs. Is that because the game has been updated since this video or what am i doing wrong?

    for some reason they detect me even with all passive stuff and is there a way to submerge faster? I already added a load of lead for extra weight, and I have no wireless transmitters, or is the detection happening because if the metal Hull? (I changed the top of the sub to the metal alloy since it has lower detection

      Jarne Theys if the enemy uses any form of active sonar they will find you no matter what. If you are being shot at by missiles make an anti missile launcher. If you're being shot at by cram etc dive deeper. Shoot them from afar.

      The AI is wonky at best. I sort of trust it with a surface ship but definitely not with a submarine. It has worked for me, but you have to be careful with it.

      It works, but its generally very simplistic. And unless you use an airplane AI, or use lua or acbs, it will keep depth.

      Let's start at the basics:
      - Do you have airpumps?
      - Have you picked the right PID? Make sure it's not the AI one

      yeah, i did have the wrong PIDs, sorry. Ive nearly gotten this sub working though, just need to fiddle with the PIDs more now that i have the right ones. tests seem rather successful so far. thanks for the vid!

    Umm... My submarine keeps tilting to one side and it causes it to flipp ones it submerged, I dont know I have done wrong i have checked the hydrofoils, and they are the correct way. please help!

      - Check your Automated Control Blocks (if you have any)
      - Check your propulsion systems
      - Check your PID settings

      Check the center of mass. It's probably too high. If you lower it and possible make the ship broader it should stop rolling over.

      For "V" hulls, I use 3 lateral partitions/sections. Center with air pumps; left and right side with helium pumps. Works well.

    For the air pumps if I go beyond -0.40 it tells me the output is saturated anyone know what my problem is

      Nvm, all I had to do way change the U-Boat from aluminum to metal so it sunk tho it still says the error but it works.
      Edit: on the second smaller sub I made, it was showing the error. But once I changed part of the floor from metal to lead it got rid of the error entirely. (leaving the comment up in case anyone has the same problem.)

      Are you using the right PID? It has to be the one in the Control section, not the AI section. That might be it.

    what was the block that after pressing q and changing stuff allowed me to change the launch angle?
    it allowed launching a bit off the gantry line ...so it didn't hit ownship
    i managed to do it once
    i am fucking having a seizure of how angry i am
    been struggling for fucking hours

      It's the Ejector addon. Add that to the Launcher block and you have the option again. I spent a LOT of time looking for that too.

    You are not that *Stealthy* if you use "Wireless Recievers" better use connectors to connect no one can detect you like that.
    Wireless stuffs are detectable!

      About the "T" and "G" thing not working ... You are using "U" and "J" try pressing these two and see if it has the same effect!
