Shane is everything anyone wanted to be. He's clearly intoxicated and that could be the takeaway for some but I see a genuine human wanting to connect. What a sweetheart. An Irish legend.
At 3:36 "At our gigs, the audience is the most important thing. If the audience is happy then you played a good gig. Doesn't matter how shit it sounded. Whoever might film it, criticize it, record it or whatever." No lip synch, no pre recorded tracks, no spotless MTV image. A man and his music. From the heart.
Shane is an extremely intelligent man and one of the last living punks that stayed true to the cause, but you can't pretend that he never killed any brain cells with the amount he drinks. It is a shame but his, and The Pogues work will be remembered forever. He did what he intended to do which was inject Irish folk music into popular music, and he accomplished that, and I admire him for that reason.
Congratulations Mr Rollins. You're the first person I've heard to interview Mr MacGowan without taking the piss out of him and ask him about his drinking. I feel ashamed for tabloid hack Danny Baker for his stitch-up of Shane on tv. Frank Skinner too.Well, we didn't actually hear you ask him anything, but I trust you were nice to him. And thanks for posting it , Ice4711 :)

I recall this at the time, I watched the H.R. show when it aired, and this is just after i got really into the Pogues snd had seen them twice by this time, and for some reason what stood out to me was the way his teeth now seemed to be affecting the way Shane sang - and yes, Shane MacGowan was a GOOD singer - by sounding like your grandpa before he puts in his teeth… Now all I can think is, Shane was a guy who understood the things that drove him, and who listened to his inner voice alone, and tuned ALL ELSE OUT. It might not have looked pretty, but then, life isn’t really about being pretty - it’s certainly not about looking or seeming to be something you’re not - pleasing to the “minds” of those who can’t even get out of their own way. All the squares - who don’t get it and never will so they shouldn’t waste their time - who think Shane set a bad example or whatever should look at the Shane MacGowan catalog and tremble in their cluelessness & insignificance. This guy wrote new standards, and for whatever it’s worth, that’s Bob Dylan-level brilliance.
Sinead O’Connor said it best “he’s a genius even operating at like half speed. Can you imagine if he was running at full speed without anything holding him back?”
Check out the photos of the Clash gig with Shane up the front bleeding from his ear. It's a good one. I met him stumbling around Dublin one night, odd experience.
he was born in england to Irish parents, and then moved back and forth between england and ireland during his early, formative years. and then i believe that the bulk of the pogues' songwriting and recording was done in London... so that might be why his accent sounds different.
Of course. Lots of Irish emigrants to England, US, Canada. Doesn't mean the culture your family and all that you are grown through is moot. He sounds like a Irish Londoner to me. But that don't make him un-irish or the like.
@@flyininabluedream Born there and at a few months old, was taken back to Ireland. Tipperary, the Preimer where he spent his childhood. His parents were Irish as were the rest of his family. Purely Irish.
Johnny Depp is a friend and he said if you're ever drinking with him don't try and keep up with him it cant be done and you'll end up with a monster hangover .
Rollins has been good friends with Nick Cave for a long time. As you no doubt know, Cave was a big time drug user, BIG TIME. Also, someone previously mentioned Ian doing the Pailhead project with Al Jourgenson. Perhaps these interviews you speak of are from the Minor Threat and SOA era in the lives of Hank and Ian? They seem pretty chilled out these days.
yeah james joyce had a daily schedule - he slept for 8 hours, he drank for 8 hours then he wrote for 8 hours. Half of those you mentioned were in about the shape of Shane or worse at his age, they just have the cosmetic effects of time and reverence from the establishment. i like them too, but let's be realistic.
interviews like this make me wonder the age old question of mr neil young " is it better to burn out or fade away" i LOVE the pogues but i HATE seeing such a talent struggling to put a sentence together.
Mentally he's still pretty spot on. He's just inarticulate as hell and really always has been - what with him being a compulsive alcoholic. A better question is if he'd be any good had he never taken a drink of alcohol in his life.
@smikestack only reason shane was there is because of his song writing talents, he was kicked out within a few weeks for drug dealing, never graduated.
@Flipper79able I wouldn't read too far into this, mate. Rollins may have been too busy on the day. There are few other bands/artists who did interviews for the show without Hank asking the questions. Both himself and Ian are pretty tolerant of all walks of life, as far as I gather.
For a cheap laugh, put on the automatic subtitles "but repair always regarding log form growth hormone loaded in favour of strength in all night..." Shane 1, Speech recognition NIL.
who 'drank too much' and whose show is this who never drank much at all and how many good albums did each make? I'd say the drunkard achieved more in the way of good music. People are obsessed with what runs in the blood of the artist rather than the art itself- that's a worse disease than any individual's addiction.
Yea, but he is funny as hell to watch... Just trying to understand him can strain a person. I have to use the closed captioning on tv to decipher what he's saying. He's brilliant but unfortunately, it hurts him too much to stay sober. Sad. He can't be happy.
I saw Shane perform in a bar in Belfast. Now as you may know, religion is a sensitive issue here. Anyway, the bar was packed with both Catholics and Protestants, so what does Shane do? He plays all IRA rebel songs. This led to someone launching an ashtray at Shane's head, a direct hit. Still, he continued, until fights started in the crowd, then bouncers had to lift him down the back stairs and into a van. Great night! Legend 🇮🇪💚❤
Is that all you think? "that guys going to die." I don't see the point in acting like an expert on Shane MacGowans body. The videos just make me want to get drunk with him one day and talk about stuff. Makes me feel like I might've had more soul being born in the UK rather than stupid Canada.
That's great and all but fans still think of Shane as some sort of Ruffien off the Harsh Poverty Streets of Dublin. As, if you actually look into his direct family/Personal history. It's incredibly Middle Class and Academic. To which was Shane's, some say privileged upbringing. Obtaining a National Scholarship from the age of 13/14 for English Literature. And he ends up like this. Go figure.
Wait a second, this isn't gene simmons! Shane looks like he's been swearing & drinking since before he was a preteen. Gene's never put anything up his nose, no, not that squeaky clean Nixoanian. Perhaps, that explains his charm? Not sure how kiss ever played rock 'n roll without these elements? Scientists are still bewildered. I'm sure Gene can explain it better. Hmmm... Maybe that does explain why I fall asleep listening to Kiss Alive, before the record's flipped for the b-side. Hey Shane, news flash, Gene worships the American conspiracy. Gene's an obvious closet Stalinist. Gene won a Trumpy before anyone else realized their value. Gene refuses to melt it down to make Kiss bullets... A real man of principle Simmons is.
