  • James Bond (Sean Connery) and Aki (Akiko Wakabayashi) get a helping hand from a giant magnet in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. Associate producer William Cartlidge said, “I remember script conferences where the idea was to think of as many outrageous suggestions as you could and this was one of them.” Directed by Lewis Gilbert.

    The filming of 'You Only Live Twice' on location co-incided with when the Boeing Corporation CH-46A Sea Knight was undergoing trials for the JASDF and this you see is one of the production prototypes taking as break from those trials. Boeing Corp agreed to let this helicopter be borrowed for the day given that it was appearing in a 'Bondie' and that it would have some of it's capabilities shown off as part of the stunt: The quick lifting of the car and the handling of the helicopter with a one ton load dangling underneath it was what sealed the deal :o)

    Anyone else find it hysterical in these films when characters can see the action on a screen? So, like, they not only sent out a helicopter with a magnet but also a second one just as a live TV transmission feed?

    • @dickhartzell6261
      @dickhartzell6261 2 роки тому +20

      Just as amusing, watching the clip I found myself wondering how the video would have been transmitted wirelessly to the car. (It can't be a broadcast signal, obviously.) But in 1967 the producers of this movie not only didn't care how it was that the watery demise of these bad guys was caught on video ... they knew the audience would simply assume the car TV screen was a supersecret spy gizmo using supersecret spy technology. No different from all the other supersecret spy gizmos Bond would get from Q in every movie. Still, it's odd to think that audiences back then were conditioned to think that the latest technologies came from the government -- spy agencies, NASA and so on. Today we're conditioned to think they come from silicon valley.

      Yes. Same in 1980's TV shows like Knight Rider. When KITT 'microjams' or short-circuits a fuse board inside some office building. We see this process taking place as viewers and the same view is seen on KITT's monitors where Michael Knight is watching this. Which even as a kid watching this I found it unrealistic. (If that show was made today (with the plathora of CCTV cams around) KITT could be made to tap into their TV signals and intercept images in such security cameras giving a sense or realism.

    Ah, the Toyota 2000GT. One of the best looking Bond cars imo. Fun fact, the reason this one's a convertible is because Connery was actually too tall to fit in the hard top, so Toyota cut the roof off of two examples of the car just for the film.

      @@davemartani1529 Well, Sean Connery was a burly 6'2" and he legitimately couldn't fit in the hard top varient. Despite appearances, the car is actually quite small. Originally Toyota and MGM tested a targa top variant, however the top of Connery's head literally stuck out from where the roofline would be. As such, they chose sacrifice the fastback looks and make a fully convertible car. Toyota actually had the two examples used in the film ready in just two weeks. This convertible variant, due to how only the two examples were made and only for the film, was nicknamed the "Bond Model" of the 2000GT.

    At 2:19 as the helicopter is about to pass from the left of the Tokyo Tower, you can see the cream coloured, long and wide Tokyo Prince Hotel to the lower right of the Tokyo Tower which is still there today some 53 years later. This view today would not be possible because of all the buildings in the foreground would be blocking the view and the buildings behind as well would make the Tokyo Tower seem not so tall. This was a 'TV broadcast tower' but after so many tall building were built around it, it lost its appeal which ended up going to the Tokyo SkyTree.

    When I used to hang about in scrap yards in my youth they all had magnets for lifting bundles of scrap, but used a grapple for whole cars.
