There’s a party going on in Divine’s head when you see her dancing down the street like that. There used to be a guy who hung out on Castro Street dressed exactly like her and had the makeup & hair exactly like Divine…..it was a treat to see him !
According to John Waters, the scene with Divine walking down the street was inspired by Coca Sarli's film Fuego, where her character walked the streets of New York while being secretly filmed. A similar scene also took place in Pink Flamingos.
Seeing Dawn Davenport frolic down the avenue always gives me a massive woodrow, pitching my tent high like an obscene pickle! I feel like I'm flying on eyeliner!
David was going to be in Desperate Living, but he was on PCP at the time of production. He accidentally killed himself on said drug months after the movie was released.
The best part was this scene was followed a fairly "traumatic" scene of Taffy killing her father and hysterically crying. The total tone change hit me the first time I saw it and I still think about it today.
I really wonder what the world would have been like had people like Divine lived? Or other LGBT icons gone too soon? If not for Divine then Rupaul would never have been able to exist. Divine (and John Waters) beat that door with a hammer that Rupaul went charging out of. Yes, there were famous drag queens of the past but they were "female impersonators" and were forced to keep their sexuality separate from their acts in order to appease the older rich straight people who would go to see them. It was ok to be entertained so long as you weren't trying to "turn" anyone on to your "lifestyle."
swtv1754 It’s Nervous Norvus an old rockabilly singer. I’m so amused and fascinated by it. tried to get it on Apple Music, they had him,but not that song, so aggravating. So I searched for him on UA-cam and you can hear the whole song!
The reason may have been because Divine had scars (fake ones) on her face. People felt bad looking staring at someone because of it and avoided it - at least according to John Waters.
...The reason that "Divine" is so believable as a woman is because lots of actual females are shaped like her. No "shade", I'm just saying. *Giggling* :D
The background music and singing plus the dancing is perfect and ahead of its time for when this was made and gets better with age
I love the way divine dresses all her clothes were iconic
Whenever I see reality stars, especially the Kardashians, I think of this movie! John Waters was ahead of his time.
+thefabulousthomasj Back in the 70s, this was shown at midnight movies, today it's everywhere.
LOL
@@MerleOberon I miss midnight movies!
These characters are far more realistic than the Kartrashians.
The girls in this movie were wholesome compared to the Kartrashians.
"eye liner taken internally enhances one's beauty"

The Greatest Movie Ever Made!
that part where the guy's eye falls out... absolutely priceless
It always looks like Stephen King to me.
"Come right on in, Dawn!" I'm sorry I can't think of his name at the moment, but I love that actor. He's so affirming! May he rest in peace.

sai76 someone didn’t get the joke.
Literally an "eye-popping" sight.
This was an extended scene. They didn’t have the dialog about the pics in the original showing.
I wish I got to see the shortened version of this film, to see what it was like before an uncut release was released in 1999.
I remember reading about how wierd that street walking scene was in Baltimore....Divine had to just get out of the car...and go for it.......lol

Female Trouble, AKA John Waters' Joker (in the best of ways)
This is where watching RLM leads you.
Love me some Devine.
You see, our experiment involves beauty and crime. We feel them to be one.
I like how the black people just look at her in a semi-state of shock! And the little old lady sitting on the bench probably had a near heart attack!
I can't believe they actually got a guy with no eye! LOL!

Did Divine ever team up with a little Macaulay Culkin

Who sings this Dig song?
swtv1754
It’s Nervous Norvus an old rockabilly singer.
I’m so amused and fascinated by it.

@@shelldaniel6412 Thank you, I googled almost all the lyrics and couldn't find a thing!!! Now I know.
swtv1754 You’re welcome!
So classic and funny ;)
Devine a more full figured version of Tina Turners What's Love got to do with it video
John waters said this scene failed because nobody was staring
The reason may have been because Divine had scars (fake ones) on her face. People felt bad looking staring at someone because of it and avoided it - at least according to John Waters.
they look starey eyed to me
It was inner city Baltimore, they saw stuff like that every day!
so thats how you plan on treating your own?
LIQUID EYELINER! xD
