By the third time, they were all looking at each other like what now? And one of em thought fuk it, let's play it again, and they all chimed in, lol. Forever grateful I found that 8 track copy of Scorpions Tokyo Tape in the discount bin at the record store in 1980. The Scorpions of the 1970's had a lot more dimension to their music than in the 1980's
I picked up In Trance and Fly to the Rainbow about the same time on cassette in a bargain bin display. I was thinking Scorpions... aren't they a new band? How could they have cassettes in the bargain bin already. Picked them up thinking they where the new stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong.
Uli is utterly magnificent ,but, like frank marino and robin trower are all criminally underrated, there should be statues erected of all three outside every rock venue IMHO
It always makes my day to see new footage of Ul! I live in Brazil, and it's not very common to see these legends here (think the last time this genious played here was in 2018). And, to get things even more difficult, I don't live in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro (the places where they usually play when they come to my country) Thanks for sharing it with us!! .
I still love Uli's lead break in Backstage Queen (Scorpions - Virgin Killer album). I know that's going back a ways for Uli, but it is one of the most tasteful, melodic, and fiery rides ever in the history of hard rock, or any rock for that matter. I still get chills hearing his work in that song. But anything he does is fine by me.
I dont know why people think age matters when it comes to guitar. Unless you get arthritis or something , you just get better the longer you play. Its not a sport.
but it does. there's a reason every legendary player says he was better when they were younger. even if you dont get artritis or carpal tunnel, which most get at some point in their career, fact is that the body doesn't function as well with age. motor skills are just not the same no matter how good you are. also then there's all the little stuff that sums up like wielding a heavy guitar for 2 hours heat on stage, maybe too less sleep maybe other age related problems, hearing loss, even mental stuff like losing the passion whatever...the list is very long. it all adds up even if your motor skill are still in pristine condition, which they rarely are. the less difficult and note-sy your stuff is the easier it probably to keep up. as long as you have to move something though, age will always play a role.
A genius ! For composing and playing this I allways found that Ulrich Roth was a genius. Such a nice revisiting of "Caravan" ! I allways loved this chorus ! I forgot it for 40 years and then found it back looking through all Scorpions LP's. I knew I would recognize it 40 years later. The question is "why all the drummers are so heavy playing that ?" It asks to me NOT on the bottom of the beat. I should groove.
Danke Uli. Not only you ve allways been on my favourite enormous masters of guitar but the one that brings Hendrix alive trully best you realy get it. thanks thanks thanks 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 love dark lady n polar nights
It's INSANE how well he still plays and the entire band is killer. Scorpions was truly a much better band with him involved, this song is timeless. Rock on Uli.
Yes , I grew up listening to the version of the scorpions with him in it, then finally when I got to be 18 it was too late and they had the newer version without him and they only had them on as an opening act and only played 4 songs in like 1980, the zoo, etc, none of the old greats like on Tokyo Tapes. I was born a little too late to see him play with the scorpions. But I did get to see Judas Priest back then and UFO which were both amazing
It's not just practicing your instrument, playing relaxed takes a lot of practice 😁. Seriously, I've been a professional musician most of my adult life and I learned to relax when I played in a funk band in my early 20's. I realized I had to learn to groove or I was out. It's not natural for most because playing in front of people can be nerve wracking, but it's the way to play your best. And Uli's got it down to a science.
