And the most important thing (to me) even though it's his show, Graham knows it's not about him. People watch for the guests and want to hear what THEY have to say or what THEY think. Almost every talk show host wants to be the funniest person on the show and that's just wrong. It annoys the crap out of me. Graham doesn't tell stories or jokes just to be funny he always does it to encourage conversation and that's why he's the best talk show host on television.
Matt Damon stated publicly that The Graham Norton Show was the most fun he has ever had on a talk show... so clearly he’s popular with Americans as well.
@@MrRjhyt and there was a LOT of liquor that night. *remembers Bill Murray, Hugh Bonneville, and Matt Damon starting the show off by downing glasses of champaign*
Honestly I love his show. I am an American and I can watch it on BBC America. The one thing that I love is the British comedians he always has on the show. I honestly think they are better than American comedians. They are more self deprecating. They are funny without seeming to know it.
I'm American too and I watch our late night hosts and like them. But I much rather watch gram Norton. I love him. He's amazing. I was telling my whole family today to watch him
I think Graham Norton is massively more entertaining than any of our American late night show hosts. He’s always seemed more smooth and fluid in the format than the American hosts.
He's not fake, he won't pretend to like people or laugh when they're not being funny. He's not afraid to make fun of his guests instead of kissing their asses
TheCheeseandrice1 Lol what? A talkshow IS supposed to be about the guests. Graham has a way with them that makes them able to be better at ease and because of that they tell wayyy better stories than when they are at other talkshows
What makes Graham good is he's an observer of people. It's so true about two shy people. One will become more confident and try to balance out the silence by talking more.
Niall T agreed. I’m an English woman and I’d go for an Irish bloke over an English bloke any time. Most English men have the charm and the charisma of a dead fish.
what i love about graham and his show is that he never tries to create drama in any way, he diffuses awkward situations so well and allows the celebs on his show come across as charming and fun. he's not looking for headlines, rather just for the guests and the audiences to have a good time, i respect that
eim that is the primary reason I love his show - it's actually a good time. Like, they happily discuss serious issues, but he is never out to "get" anyone, and wants his audience to enjoy it, and for the guests to want to come back!
I liked Graham for that reason and he's my second favorite Late Show host. But I've been a naturalized citizen of the Colbert Nation since 2006 because Colbert is the exact opposite of that. His show is not a hugbox or a simple platform for guests to promote things and have fun. He uses his privilege and reach to ask the hard hitting questions and address the elephant in the room. His irreverence for the pretense of courtesy is what makes him stand out from the other hosts who thrive only on light fun and little to no substance. He earned this audience all the way back when he refused to hold back at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner while President Bush and the most powerful figures in politics, media, and industry were present to hear him tear them apart. ua-cam.com/video/CWqzLgDc030/v-deo.html
And he makes an effort to pronounce the guests names right & he seems genuinely excited about all his musical guests. As if he handpicked them because he listens to their music. His is the only talk show I actually watch in full. And he let's the guests finish their stories. He's the best.
“Popular in the UK” Im from the Philippines and he’s my fave talkshow host 😂 Update: Look at all these countries who replied to this comment! ❤️ United by Graham Norton hahaha
The Graham Norton Show is something rare. I've never seen celebrities look as relaxed and comfortable as in that show. I always picture Matt Damon slightly drunk in the couch with Bill Murray and Hugh Bonneville, saying "this is the most fun I've ever had on a talk show". Love Graham to pieces.
sensate-scars 1) lol they give them alcohol . 2) U.K. Isn't as pc as we are. So they aren't as self conscious about what they say and what they get asked . 3) they allow multiple celebrities on at once
I always thought the best guest was Miriam Margolyes. I have never laughed so much in my life. But people just have a tendency of relaxing on Graham's show. The alcohol, plus none of the gossipy personal life stuff gets touched. He also teases them but about innocent things. Like the crazy Halloween outfits Harrison Ford wears during Halloween with Calista Flockhart for example. I also notice that he'll have a UK comedian on as well to get other guests relaxed. I really think that's the reason it works so much.
Graham Norton is the absolute best talk show host hands down. I watch him over any American talk show host and I live in the states. This interview just proves how much better he is at keeping conversation interesting and smooth.
British talk shows will always be far greater than anything the US can produce. Look around at ALL US talk show hosts combined compared to Graham Norton alone, who do you think is the most famous? Most people have never heard of Colbert, Fallen, Kimmel, Oliver, etc yet Graham Norton is famous literally anywhere. One of the most famous celebrities on the planet, easily.
UA-cam made him famous for me. When you go thru your favorite celebrity’s interview rabbit hole, I saw his videos and that was it. I love his multiple guest dynamic. Then i saw Jonathan Ross and chatty man and love those way better than American talk shows as far as interviewing goes. I think Jimmy Fallon is great when he gets the guests to play with him and the political monologues are so funny especially with this administration.
Graham Norton is right up there with the best hosts of all time....Great energy, incredibly witty and often funnier than his guests which are often top tier comedians.
@@daviddacus8168Love the appreciation for Graham across the pond, but not nearly as much as I love salty Americans who can't stand the fact he's definitely the best talk show host in the world
@@Alex-nh6zc He literally said “one of the most famous talk shows, in the UK” when he’s the biggest in the world. “There might be some people who don’t know your CV” everyone knows him. He read off achievements and missed of so much bigger shit. Downplayed him again saying “you’re super famous, ugh, over in ENGLAND”. Tried to talk down on his show quite a few times making comparisons to his own show. “You have other talents OTHER THAN TALKING, you write aswell” yeah, just make it sound like you don’t do that aswell but he does it x1000 better lmao.
i agree, there might be larger stars in countries like India, or in the Latino countries, but Graham is a huge talk show host whos famous in many many countries, including America due to the internet.
I am from India and I am huge Graham Norton fan🥰🥰🥰 he is the best talk show host I ever seen and I watch many talk shows but nothing's came cross to the Graham Norton show 🤩
You gotta love gringos. "People seem to love you, over in England." I live in Mexico and I've watching his show for nearly ten years. He's the best host I've ever seen. Witty, smart, naughty, smooth and genuinely funny. His guests really seem to have a good time unlike some I've seen on Jimmy Fallon or James Corden's shows.
Huge difference in format though. U.S. talk shows are edging ever closer toward 50/50 content vs advertising time. There is so little flow in most U.S. late night interviews, always a rush to get to whatever the actor/celeb is promoting before commercial break. By contrast there are no ad breaks on Graham's show, funny personal anecdotes can run their proper lengths, other guests can riff on the details, etc..
I am pretty sure Graham Norton reaches an audience multiple times larger than any American talk show, as the show runs in 20+ countries all over the world on BBC International
@@Eli-kq7qt Their shows are actually aired in less countries. Norton literally airs in more countries than any other talkshow. The two you mention may be more famous in America, but that is just continuing the ignorant egocentricity already being called into question by the original comment. And richest? Oprah did not get that from being a talkshow host, she got that from other ventures like her publishing company and production company. Her wages as a talkshow host were famously low (by her own admission) and that was precisely why she pivoted into setting up those other companies. So yeah, she's a more famous and richer businessperson, but that is a strawman to this debate about the talkshows. Graham is paid more by others for his talkshow than she ever was for her own while it was being run by other people: Fact.
@@Eli-kq7qt I don't really know what other Germans watch, but I don't think many people know Oprah...I have never seen a show of hers and only know of her because of Americans talking about her.
Mr Graham Norton, there's no one who could even come close to him. He knows how to make each of his guests feel so incredibly good. Superstars do stuff on his show, it's unbelievable. He is by far one of the most charming, funny, spontaneous and warm people I know. He also lets his guests speak, something I often really miss with American hosts and also find extremely rude. Every single Graham Norton show is a pure joy.
He'll often get the ball rolling and then the guests take it away. There have definitely been episodes where he's sat back and not said much at all because the "magic" is happening without needing to be babysat.
Interestingly enough, the weakest GN shows are when he has Americans on. The majority of them are pompous, vapid, and dull as dirt, with a only a handful of exceptions.
@@barbarakauppi9915 out of curiosity, who do *you* think are the exceptions? There also needs to be allowances made because there is a significant cultural difference when it comes to this kind of show, I think. For better or worse, they aren't allowed this kind of freedom in talk shows in the States. They're used to question, answer, question, answer, joke, question, answer, lather, rinse, repeat on all the shows. I will agree with you, though, that many American guests don't appear to be that bright, but I also think that is a product of the Hollywood system to dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator so even if the guest is really intelligent, they aren't used to being allowed to let it show.
@@barbarakauppi9915 The problem with the americans on is that they are usually movie stars, and you say the wrong thing in an interview and your career can be over. So usually its the really huge stars who don't really worry much who are the best guests. I don't get the feeling of pompous, but I see your point. In the US most media does nothing but talk them up, while british press is known for dragging people down, so those guests are more used to it. But that is largely true, on craig fergusons old show it was his interviews at first with guests in his audience that was usually the funniest part of the show. And they do that a lot too on nortons show.
I feel like he’s more popular in the uk and Ireland more than America or such. Which is really unfortunate because he is definitely the best of the hosts
So did Matt Damon and Bill Murray. However, all of them were drunk beforehand and only continued with their drinking charade during the show. They were not forced to drink and they are exceptions to the rule.
"You're shooting with a gun and he's got a bomb" 😂😂😂 there was a moment the audience wasn't sure how to respond to that ahahah, UK hosts don't hold back ahhh, ahhh I love Graham.
Bill Murray said to a british journalist (after that insanely show with Matt Damon and Hugh Bonneville) that he rather do two or three Graham Norton's shows for the rest of his life, than going to other talk shows a hundred times. And Matt Damon said it clearly "This is the most fun I've ever had on a talk show." Graham is a talk show genius. By the way, you all should watch that show with Matt, Bill and Hugh and brace yourselfs. Clooney was on a later show and said it to Graham's face "OMG...that show!"
I haven't seen a bad Norton show, he always makes his guests chill out and in doing so gets them to open up and get the best out of them. He is a master entertainer. All his guest seem to be genuinely having fun and as a result we do, I cannot think of a better host, though Conan is also unique and brilliant.
To be really, really honest, I cringe when I occasionally watch clips on yt from his early years. But everything in the last 10 years is gold. Platinum even.
But graham also knows how to keep a conversation going naturally, doesn't interrupt his guests, doesn't try and make the show about himself and has a better sense of humour than american talk show hosts.
To be fair, if you've ever seen the GN show, he brings out the best is celebs as they always seem genuienly relaxed and to be enjoying themselves. There's none of that scripted "your line, my line" shite.
One of the things that I think helps a lot in Graham's show is the research they make so as to find stories or subjects that some guests have in common. That's how sometimes you get the guests to interact with each other, without the need of the host to interveen with questions or comments. In some clips you can even see Graham just leaning on his couch appreciating the conversation between them unfolding.
This video really outlines the differences between European and American talk shows. In America, the host is very controlling of the conversation, and its more like a job interview than a "talk." In Europe, it's like a casual conversation, with the host asking a few questions every now and then, but otherwise letting the guests talk how they want.
Dragmire800 i agree! It feels more like you’re watching in on a fun dinner party amongst friends than a stiff promotional interview. They seem more relaxed with themselves & each other & talk so candidly. Graham is so great about getting celebrities to share personal info or stories that you don’t ever see American hosts rarely get them to do.
Dragmire800 never payed enough attention to notice this, but now that you've mentioned it... damn, you're so right !😳😳 now i see why i like the norton show the best
Yeah this felt very rehearsed compared with how dynamic and hilarious Graham Norton's show is. Oddly one of my favorite Colbert's is the one they did for the election. Cause it didn't go as they thought and they threw the script out the window.
I love that when Stephen says "You give them alcohol?!", it is basically confirming that he has never seen the show before. All of his compliments prior to that immediately became redundant.
Yeah on Alan Carr's chatty man it's even more blatant, the moment they sit down on his sofa he opens a drinks cabinet to feed them some cheap (often gross) alcohol and makes a point of drinking with the guests.
It might just be Stephen giving Graham the opportunity to talk about it by feigning ignorance. They probably agreed what they were going to talk about before he went on.
They rehearse every show (just like Conan and the other shows), so it was a way to ease in on the topic... Still tho, it seems like Colbert didn't like Norton at all. I felt that it was somewhat awkward...
@@jokertheinsaneclown3136 as much as I love Conan, he's better on his own. With guests, he's only good with people he can connect with. Graham on the other hand can make his couch interesting no matter who's on it.
I liked Craig Fergusson, the Colbert, Fallon, Seth Meyers and most others always rehearse (too much maybe) and you feel that things are staged...Fergusson was the ol’ punk without fear, just wonderfully unpredictable!
Conan doesn't have the best skits, in fact most of his sketches is pretty dang bad, which Conan uses to his advantage. I say Conan has the best worst skits, and the best format, because he always plays on himself, and his show.
RIPHitchens I agree, sort of, Graham has weeks to research his guests while Colbert has a day or two. That's why graham seems better and more personal. Graham is great "investigative" host better research and questions and Colbert is more of a "improvising" host.
@@BaldMancTwat I think so too, and that summarizes all the reason why I like Graham Norton's show so much better than any of these. Oh, besides the fact that a very generic hand-off comment like "shooting fish in a barrel" had to elicit the "fish being the greatest democracy in the world" answer. People, the US may be big, but it's not the beginning and end of the world. And this calling yourselves "the greatest *** of the world" every three seconds... pff, you can afford to do that if you're a little Miss Scarlett living all your life in your own neighborhood. Can't you see how annoying that is?
Automatically shows the difference between both shows, graham does his research and pays attention and interest to his guests and others don’t seem to even know what they are talking about
@@evablaker4326 I suppose it might be a way to get the audience acquainted with the assumption that they may not know Graham's show. But personally (maybe because I know it and it's a very obvious detail) I find it contrived. I'd prefer the host to be straight: "because (for those who may not be aware) on your show alchohol is served regularly, right?". I also get the feeling that for any other topic they wouldn't have gone such a roundabout way, but since we're talking about alchohol (SHOCK! WHITE WINE!!!) being publicly visible on a show, they need to thread on eggshells.
I'm an American and I completely get it. I think if we were to pay a $gadzillion to bribe him to leap the pond, he'd completely destroy our late night competition in the ratings.......no doubt!
Graham Norton and Craig Fergusson the 2 best talk show hosts in TV history. Just to say Graham Norton is loved not just in the UK. the guy is so well known and hugely popular. Celebrities love him. Mat Damon and Bill Murray were on his show and Damon said, "it was the most fun he had ever had on a talk show." Norton is the Master!
No offense to US talk show hosts (conan is my favourite) but you have no idea on how big Graham Norton really is. Nor do you know how experienced he is. Many including the top usa talk show hosts in usa speak to him like their senior. This when Graham can still talk like a young man in his twenties! Lastly, Im not from usa or uk but many of us from far away countries have been mesmerized and gladly accept him as the best ever EVER talk show host. He puts all his guests to such an ease and makes it so exciting for them and takes us viewers for a ride for a full 50 plus minutes! for seasons after season. ALL THIS WITHOUT ANY vulgar insults (other than a harmless joke) or hostility towards his guests or personalities/celebs/politicians not attending his show!. Hard to beat that. Very hard esp in usa (esp if you check how the talk show hosts and media are acting in usa in the last couple of years). Full respects to all talk show hosts but please, just please consider for a moment that there is a whole wide world (slightly bigger than usa) that has great talk show hosts like this man. He is an international treasure!, not just an irish treasure. Just consider this, i find conan funniest (even more than craig) but i undoubtedly without any offense admit Graham norton is the best.
According to a YouGov report two-thirds of the British public trust the authors of Wikipedia entries more than print media, 3% more than BBC News journalists, even.
Graham does the BEST celebrity interviews. If a favorite star is on The Graham Norton Show I ALWAYS watch the whole show. The episode with Bill Murray-Matt Damon-Hugh Bonneville is a classic. All three got drunk and it was hilarious.
+Atiyeh Moghaddam I adore him so much too!!! He's so easy to watch and fun. I love the way his celebrity guests really warm up to him so much better than American talk show hosts. I love our hosts here, but wow, Graham is so perfect to me
Richard Clutterbuck I don't agree with what u r saying. I just think that his show on BBC is more toned down now and more about talking to guests in a professional manner. He also talks less and makes less jokes. Before he used to come out with hilarious stuff. It used to be funny when he used to do things like the the "do u like wood prank?" or the funny foreign foods names with Stanley tucci, or reading out the letter of the billionaire boy book ect.. and also when he used to engage the audience more like Chris pine and benedict cumberbatch and getting Liam Neeson to add his voice to someone's voice mail message. Also when he used to show objects to guests and bring up things about their pasts like an embarrassing modelling shoot. As well as showing things from the Internet. I dont think they use Internet much now after an incident where on a Google search it was showing " why is there a dead pakistani on my couch?" But mainly It don't feel he Jokes and talks as much compared to before. His humour is brilliant as well as his expressions and the way he reads things like the billionaire boy letter
Graham is not only a great TV host, he is literally the most likable personality in TV, no matter what country you watch him from. He is so witty and smart, with a great sense of humor and also an impeccable sense of timing, and yet he never tries to impose himself as the center of attention or the star, even though he obviously is, and a huge one. He is such a charismatic guy, always delivering a great show for his hosts and his public. He is one of a kind.
As an American I have to say I don't think I've ever seen a better talk show than Graham's. At it's best it's fantastic. The Bill Murray, Matt Damon episode is an absolute classic.
I ran across Mr Norton on youtube. Whenever I need a pick me up from stress or blues, Mr Norton's show and Robin Williams are my go to cures. Mr Norton is very affable and allowing his guests to be themselves, you get more revelation of a small quaint talk among "friends" than a formal Q & A.
It helps that Graham doesn't even think about the idea of being "better than" his guest. It's a silly question for Stephen to ask. If he watched Graham's show, it's pretty clear that he is interested in all his guests, regardless of how they address him.
Yeah, it was a little sad when you saw Colbert had to move on to the next topic a few times. I feel like they could have easily gone on for half an hour uninterrupted by network needs to touch on many different topics!
Yeah. American chat show interviews are all far too rushed. Don't think I've ever seen one go over like 8 minutes...Where as you watch Graham Norton and you've got an (almost) hour of chatting.
MrSceneNine so true! I think that might be to do with their set-up though. When you have a group of guests one is bound to at least be interesting for 40mins or so but if you have one boring guest for 8mins then it's a killer! 😄 Wish they made exemptions with special guests like Graham though. He had so much more to say
I think America hurts it's self with the Greatest Democracy on Earth BS, my country is 10x better that the US in many ways but it's still pish, and could be alot better. But by saying you are the greatest imho, it's like saying well I'm Great so I'm not going to try be better. The US has a lot going for it but Greatest fuck no, not even close, strongest yup, but there is more to a country that just having a massive millitary. Be proud to be America, ofc lots to be proud of and like, but their attitude is almost like a NAZI level superiority complex.
I’m an American, live on the East Coast, but I can’t tell you how many Graham Norton clips I’ve watched. He truly is a treasure amongst the TV interviewers, I love the guy. And you can tell his guests love him too.
Yea, in this interview, well he's probably taken aback with who the staffs had decided for him to guest and there's quite a handful of words that's been used to kinda put Graham "in his place". Good thing I first watched the most recent interview he had with Graham and they seem more at ease there.
DoctorWeeTodd Interesting questions become useless when you don’t let the guest answer. His only sort of slightly redeeming factor are his little skits with the guests which are sometimes funny.
This is a brilliant illustration of a problem common to many interviewers, and one that Colbert even speaks about during this interview. 1:02, he asks a question. 1:10 Norton is just about to give his answer and Colbert is 'no, I'm just going to keep talking about my question'. Just let your damn guest speak!
The reason Graham Norton and his show are so beloved- is because it never feels forced. It feels like you’re watching a group of friends on a night in, drinking and swapping stories. Love you Graham!
Graham absolutely nailed me with the 4:01 bit about speaking up when no one else does. As a musician and artist, I do get that urge fairly often. The key, however, is knowing how and when to use that tendency so you don't come across as a showoff.
I always get super nervous when I'm with people who don't talk. I'm so bad at reading people and I have no idea what's going on, like, are they just shy? Am I preventing them from speaking up because I am, admittedly, usually loud and enthusiastic? would they like to say something or should I keep talking? Was that break and uncomfortable silence or...?
Luke Taylor He is hilarious and he gets it from having been a successful actor. The way Graham phrases things is pure genius. You should see him in Father Ted- a very popular cult classic British comedy. Plus his interview with Elton John featuring a phone sex piece set to Rocket Man will make you laugh so hard you will cry. I wish I had gotten tickets to his show when I lived in London. I will have to plan for my next trip.
Yeah, it's kinda both? I don't like for people to feel left out :) But, yeah, second one is easier to cope with. First one is... you kind of need every other outgoing person to play along if one or two people are too shy to interject something..
American talk shows try to direct the conversation and keep it at a certain pace, then place the ad for the movie. In Graham Norton, all he does is PROVOKE conversations. When he sees that the topic is ending, he introduces a new topic.
That's because all the US ones are scripted and rehearsed. It's literally like a script "Ok, first we'll talk about your funny tweet, then how it was shooting with XX, then we'll plug your new movie"
@@michaelkupfer3723 Exactly, it's so boring. I like seeing the actors discuss things as normal people, like embarrassing things that happened to them, rather than just talk about how their celebrity life is.
That's why Craig Fergusons show was as good as Grahams, it was pretty much all improv. He used to tear up his scripts at the beginning of every show, and he was razor sharp on comebacks, like graham. His show with Ricky Grervais where he starts talking about Ricky's voiceover in the Muppet movie has to be the funniest period of a talk show I've ever seen. They were like 2 tennis pro's, knocking out hilarious comebacks one after the other.
To be honest, this may be due to the BBC, no interruptions during the show! Jonathan Ross was pretty big before Graham, he was on BBC, he switched to ITV (where ads are allowed) and not as big anymore. Not taking away from his skills, also the fact that all the guests are on at near enough the same time allows them to chat and share relatable stories/experiences which makes the show what it is.
@@bennyceca I use to love Ross on the BBC as he acted like he had nothing to lose, then it all went a bit too scripted and "safe"and once he moved to ITV felt like a USA chat show.
NO American talk show can even TOUCH Graham Norton. The quality is eons apart. EONS. EONS. Example: Stephen seems genuinely shocked that Graham offers his guests drinks. Stephen, did you bother to watch his show or research? Graham does the best research on guests I have ever seen. He even knows stuff from their youth. It's uncanny. Like I said. EONS. I dare you to NOT become an instant fan after watching segments with these guests, for example: Miriam Margolyes (I misspelled that), Joan Rivers, Chris Pratt, Bill Murray, Matt Damon, Ricky Gervais.
You are so right - I never actually appreciated how true this is until I read your post! I do like Stephen Colbert but he was very ignorant in dealing with Graham Norton as his shows are jam packed with A listers and they are about the guests not the host.
You're right about the research. Graham and his team do their homework and he finds stories for each celebrity to tell, like he knows in advance all their best anecdotes and draws them out so well, and even finds links between guests' stories so they never feel left out. You can see how he gets the local uk comic or TV star to tell great stories and show their personality to the big movie stars so they gain the confidence they need to thrive. Stephen is probably the funniest guy on US late night TV at the moment and he consistently nails the trump shit show, but he could learn a lot from graham. Any time his guests seem to want to Stert talking about something, he doesn't know how to keep them going and is often a bit monosyllabic and awkward himself.
Norton's show is the best chat show of all time simply because there's several a-list superstars at any given time and no censorship. They can swear as much as they like and he's the funniest interviewer.
Graham lets his guests finish their stories he just helps elevate the story line by a witty comment from his genius comedic brain. American talk shows tho... A cringe
Hippie Ninja really not sure how my response came across as being triggered, you can't just use that anytime somebody says something that you don't agree with.
Must be delusional to think that Graham is only famous in UK. I’m from Far East and my favourite talk show host is Graham. In fact clicked on this video for Graham
I got the feeling that Stephen tried to belittle him a bit. Just slightly trying to exert control in a power competition- but Graham wouldn't have it and didn't play into it. 😆👍
I thought he was pretty laudatory of Graham. The truth is that most Americans couldn't tell Graham from Spike Milligan so assuming his audience knows that he is an international super star is ridiculous..
You don't watch Colbert much do you? It's his style too. A lot of the persona of his Colbert Report often sneaks into his interviews as Stephen Colbert too :)
@Starscream91 Norton is broadcast in almost every country in the world (not - officially - the African nations, middle-east, or China, but pretty much everywhere else), often in prime slots, and with a huge following - and Colbert has mostly late slots in about 10 countries, including the US. Norton's show hits up to 3.9 million viewers in the UK alone (population 66 million), while Colbert manages about 3.8 million in the US (population 327 million). I know which of them is doing a better job.
it shows that the British are very polite and reserved when they comment on things that for others you would get a violent reaction. that he said "political situation" which refers to Trump is kind of a nice way of saying it but at the same time is also mildly sarcastic and knowing that everything is not well in the USA given the current political leadership.
Nameless L I think it's more the American audience that's the problem, James Corden has went from Graham's style of interviewing to basically being Jimmy Fallon with his fake laugh.
Not always, Jonathan Ross has sat on both sides, Paul O'Grady sat on the right, so did Alan Carr, and in the US, James Corden (I know he's English, but it's an American show) sits on the left. It's not to do with the country at all, they just sit whatever side the people who made the set like. Most just probably sit on the right in America because they seem to have so many more talk shows that it means they've got used to the host being on the right, so prefer the familiarity.
I'm a Turkish person living in the Netherlands and I've been watching Graham Norton with absolute delight for YEARS. Popular over in "England"? 😄😄😄 Ouch Stephen. Also, you couldn't have NOT known that he gives cocktails to his guests. Either Stephen didn't watch a single Graham Norton Show episode, or he's playing ignorant for the audience's sake (I hope it's the latter). Love you Graham, live long and healthy and happy and please keep doing what you're doing!
Popular in the UK ? dude I’m from freaking Algeria and he’s my favorite host to watch 😂
Idriss - you're a complete star. You made me laugh out loud with that one.🤣
Yup me too 🙋♀️ Stephen really downplayed his popularity

And a great talent abd charisma!!
No 1 should be, A host who listens
Matt Damon stated publicly that The Graham Norton Show was the most fun he has ever had on a talk show... so clearly he’s popular with Americans as well.
Liquor, and Irish charm.

Honestly I love his show. I am an American and I can watch it on BBC America. The one thing that I love is the British comedians he always has on the show. I honestly think they are better than American comedians. They are more self deprecating. They are funny without seeming to know it.

Alcohol for the guest helps.
Best???
No
I think Graham Norton is massively more entertaining than any of our American late night show hosts. He’s always seemed more smooth and fluid in the format than the American hosts.
Its because of the alcohol obviously and multiple guests. Its a party essentially.
He is by far the best
The wat he handles 5-6 guests at the same time.. Just flawless
It’s probably because Graham has a sense of humour, where as colberts is written for him.
He's not fake, he won't pretend to like people or laugh when they're not being funny. He's not afraid to make fun of his guests instead of kissing their asses
Except Conan O Brien.
Graham Norton is the best talkshow host in the world, because he can put guests at ease and have them doing and saying things like no other show.
Michael Parker Best talkshow handsdown
Norton is shite. He fawns overs his guests and always plays it safe. He's a sycophant.
TheCheeseandrice1 Lol what? A talkshow IS supposed to be about the guests. Graham has a way with them that makes them able to be better at ease and because of that they tell wayyy better stories than when they are at other talkshows
Meryl streep call him a genius that he put the most uptight people at ease, and Robert de Niro been on his show 3times
That’s coz they be liquored up.. and somehow his research team finds things in common with his guests...
Graham’s show is so vastly superior to any talk show that’s on in the US.
1000000000%

They keep hosts on in USA so long if their hwhite….they could never be this entertaining

Graham and Craig Ferguson were my favorites.
What makes Graham good is he's an observer of people. It's so true about two shy people. One will become more confident and try to balance out the silence by talking more.
thats his job
ya know? anyone who spends 20years worth of time around a certain type of people will... become an "expert" on them in some ways
No what make him great is that He is Irish. Irish people have charm, can have the craic and banter with anyone. We are storytellers. The Brits aren't.
Niall T that’s so true and I’m English
Niall T agreed. I’m an English woman and I’d go for an Irish bloke over an English bloke any time. Most English men have the charm and the charisma of a dead fish.
what i love about graham and his show is that he never tries to create drama in any way, he diffuses awkward situations so well and allows the celebs on his show come across as charming and fun. he's not looking for headlines, rather just for the guests and the audiences to have a good time, i respect that
eim that is the primary reason I love his show - it's actually a good time. Like, they happily discuss serious issues, but he is never out to "get" anyone, and wants his audience to enjoy it, and for the guests to want to come back!
eim what I love about the top comments to this video is that they're so nuanced and analytical about talk show hosts!
I agree with you a 💯/💯👍
"The chances of that book killing you are really slim." - Graham Norton, master of salesmanship.

I always think Jennifer Lawrence is the best guest. I think she's a Graham fave.
sensate-scars 1) lol they give them alcohol . 2) U.K. Isn't as pc as we are. So they aren't as self conscious about what they say and what they get asked . 3) they allow multiple celebrities on at once
I remember Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum on Chatty Man, and Channing was wetting himself because Alan Carr was swearing so much.
I'll never forget how Harrison Ford fell in love with Jack Whitehall on there
I always thought the best guest was Miriam Margolyes.
I agree, I also liked Craig Ferguson as well.
He is the best hands down. Craig is great as well.
"Word of your political situation has reached us" nearly broke Stephen.

Sam Khan what? The meatless sandwich? He explains it very clearly. They are two hosts with no "guests"

Superfamous in England?! He's bigger than Stephen Colbert worldwide.
Queen Elizabeth II In America. Because the population is bigger. Doesn't really hold much merit as a statistic.

Los yankees no son capaces de entender que no son el centro del mundo.
The number of guests, especially American guests, who say it's the most fun they've had in a talk show speaks for itself.

Yeah and Oprah is the most famous and richest of them all so what’s your point and now Ellen is coming in right behind her.....

He also lets his guests speak, something I often really miss with American hosts and also find extremely rude.
Every single Graham Norton show is a pure joy.
"He also lets his guests speak"
YES!!

This is why I prefer Graham to Jonathon Ross
But graham also knows how to keep a conversation going naturally, doesn't interrupt his guests, doesn't try and make the show about himself and has a better sense of humour than american talk show hosts.

Everyone who’s ever binged interviews of favorite actors has seen Graham Norton.
This video really outlines the differences between European and American talk shows. In America, the host is very controlling of the conversation, and its more like a job interview than a "talk." In Europe, it's like a casual conversation, with the host asking a few questions every now and then, but otherwise letting the guests talk how they want.
Dragmire800 that's an interesting way of distinguishing them
Dragmire800 i agree!
America is all about jobs
Yeah this felt very rehearsed compared with how dynamic and hilarious Graham Norton's show is.
Oddly one of my favorite Colbert's is the one they did for the election. Cause it didn't go as they thought and they threw the script out the window.
I have seen a lot of talk show hosts but nobody is better than Graham..!
Craig Ferguson's show was a better show. But sure Graham Norton is a better host.
Craig Ferguson!!
Graham Norton and the Chatty man have to be the best shows! British talk shows are the best and not as tame as the American ones
Craig Ferguson was comparably good. Oddly enough, all my friends in US heard nothing neither about Graham nor about Craig's shows.
He absolutely cracks me up. His shows are so relaxed and funny.
It’s his Irish ☘️ charm for sure, sláinté
I love that when Stephen says "You give them alcohol?!", it is basically confirming that he has never seen the show before. All of his compliments prior to that immediately became redundant.
Yes, he talks as if this is a secret or controversial? It seems like a regular thing on UK chat shows.
Wow! Ouch!
They rehearse every show (just like Conan and the other shows), so it was a way to ease in on the topic... Still tho, it seems like Colbert didn't like Norton at all. I felt that it was somewhat awkward...
As much as I like Stephen Colbert, Graham Norton is on a completely different level and practically in a class all by himself.
samsabruskongen no, Jimmy Fallon is unbearable.

Conan doesn't have the best skits, in fact most of his sketches is pretty dang bad, which Conan uses to his advantage. I say Conan has the best worst skits, and the best format, because he always plays on himself, and his show.
The8347135 I think Conan is better then any other hosts rn
RIPHitchens I agree, sort of, Graham has weeks to research his guests while Colbert has a day or two. That's why graham seems better and more personal. Graham is great "investigative" host better research and questions and Colbert is more of a "improvising" host.
"You offer your guests drinks??" - Stephen Colbert, apparently has never seen the Graham Norton Show
That, or it's likely that because American talk shows are written beforehand, it was just a question that he had to ask.

Of course he knows he is big worldwide but his audience members Americans.
Combined
Only US host that I care about is Conan O’Brien
I have several friends that when I have said something about one of his shows, their response was Who?.

+Atiyeh Moghaddam I adore him so much too!!! He's so easy to watch and fun. I love the way his celebrity guests really warm up to him so much better than American talk show hosts. I love our hosts here, but wow, Graham is so perfect to me
I hear this other dude named Stephen something is not that bad either.
Atiyeh Moghaddam I love him too for more than 4 years now.
Big only in England... Lol...
I'm from Malaysia n can't wait for his show every week...
OH MY GOD GRAHAM!!! He's without a doubt the BEST talk show host in the world! He never fails to be so hilarious every single episode!
mchras he use to be beyond funny but not so much now.
He is not “one of”, he is THE BEST and that includes America!
Serena Serena I don’t think it was meant as a dig, his show doesn’t air here. I only see clips on UA-cam! Love him, though.
Nope Craig Ferguson was better
When it comes to talkshow hosts, Graham is in a league of his own
Graham is not only a great TV host, he is literally the most likable personality in TV, no matter what country you watch him from.
Graham is sitting there like a wise old man, explaining, he’s really the sweetest and the best talk show host ever
Hot tip, he's only a year older than Steven
GRAHAM NORTON IS THE BEST TALK SHOW HOST PERIOD.
Steph F shame that Craig Ferguson retired
Craig Ferguson!!
Craig who..... cmon now

Nope 😂
It's gotta be Conan, Letterman and Carson.
As an American I have to say I don't think I've ever seen a better talk show than Graham's. At it's best it's fantastic. The Bill Murray, Matt Damon episode is an absolute classic.
I have watched this episode multiply times. One of the best.
Yes, that one always cracks me up! No better talk show than Graham Norton.
Parker Allen that episode is legendary 😂 comedy gold
The one with Cumberbatch, Redmayne and Cranston is also just hilarious :D
That honestly feels like a night out at a bar. Doesn't even feel like a talkshow. Telly Brilliance.
Even De Niro feels at home when at Graham Norton Show.
Ikr, he's been on Graham 3 times already
😂🤣that’s strong.
Harrison Ford enjoys himself when in Graham Norton and he's usually like a sarcastic bored old man in talk shows. I love it
@@plastic_cleopatra
Yup, he was delightful beside Benedict Cumberbatch. I do wonder how much liquoring up happens.
It helps that Graham doesn't even think about the idea of being "better than" his guest. It's a silly question for Stephen to ask. If he watched Graham's show, it's pretty clear that he is interested in all his guests, regardless of how they address him.
I really liked this interview. I wish it could have gone on a lot longer
Yeah, it was a little sad when you saw Colbert had to move on to the next topic a few times. I feel like they could have easily gone on for half an hour uninterrupted by network needs to touch on many different topics!
Yvonne Yay see, another reason why Graham's show is the best.
Yeah. American chat show interviews are all far too rushed. Don't think I've ever seen one go over like 8 minutes...Where as you watch Graham Norton and you've got an (almost) hour of chatting.
Daniel Massey with Jon Stewart, Jay Leno and Seinfeld too 😍😍
MrSceneNine so true! I think that might be to do with their set-up though. When you have a group of guests one is bound to at least be interesting for 40mins or so but if you have one boring guest for 8mins then it's a killer! 😄 Wish they made exemptions with special guests like Graham though. He had so much more to say
Graham's "yes" after "the greatest democracy in the world", it's the most unconvinced "Yes" I've ever heard...
Elkarus the biggest is India in terms of stats, jus saying.
Be proud to be America, ofc lots to be proud of and like, but their attitude is almost like a NAZI level superiority complex.
the greatest democracy is Catalonia

I’m an American, live on the East Coast, but I can’t tell you how many Graham Norton clips I’ve watched. He truly is a treasure amongst the TV interviewers, I love the guy. And you can tell his guests love him too.
"People seem to love you, over in ENGLAND.." I can't help but cringe
Rekken and Yu right? Rude
Yea, in this interview, well he's probably taken aback with who the staffs had decided for him to guest and there's quite a handful of words that's been used to kinda put Graham "in his place". Good thing I first watched the most recent interview he had with Graham and they seem more at ease there.

The difference between Graham and Stephen as host is that Graham doesn't keep interrupting his guests or try to be the star of the show.
:-p :-D amen
Exactly, also you can switch out Stephen with literally any other american talk show host and this statement would still be correct.
Stephen does ask interesting questions though,
DoctorWeeTodd Interesting questions become useless when you don’t let the guest answer. His only sort of slightly redeeming factor are his little skits with the guests which are sometimes funny.
Son Of Montreal, I think you have Colbert mixed up with Fallon, who frequently interrupts his guests. Colbert pauses and lets his guests speak.
I fking love Graham Norton :D
Neil Godfrey It's an idiomatic you little shit. I fuxking love Graham Norton too. I don't actually though. It's a way of speaking you dumb ass bugger

Shelley Templar Absolutely the best!
Craig Ferguson was AND he made the most beautiful women blush and loosen up ^^
This is a brilliant illustration of a problem common to many interviewers, and one that Colbert even speaks about during this interview. 1:02, he asks a question. 1:10 Norton is just about to give his answer and Colbert is 'no, I'm just going to keep talking about my question'. Just let your damn guest speak!
“Word of your political situation has reached us” ROFL
In other words "yes I know about it but won't b fulling my show full of generic "Trump in so dumb amIrite ?" jokes
Orange man bad.... *laughter track
Oh but he does. He's just too polite to say it.
@Dave Sergio I like both Milo and Graham. The only time Graham's show ever got political is when he had Hitlery Rotten Cunton on
The reason Graham Norton and his show are so beloved- is because it never feels forced.
Was that break and uncomfortable silence or...?
or...? Maybe they're on the spectrum?
Shut the fuck up, Luke Taylor. Just shut the fuck up.
I hope people who didn’t know about him before this look up his videos. His show is amazing - he’s tremendously witty and such a gracious host
Peter Paz
I so agree with your comment, that it’s not enough to like it only once.
Here is a ❤️ just to be sure you get how much I agree with it.
OMG I remember that Joan Rivers segment the crowd could not catch their breathe haha
Peter Paz Miriam margoyles was the worst! I can never watch the episodes she’s in!
Ian Wilson the liquor doesn't hurt, either
I love this man!! He's so quick and he's just hysterically funny.
Graham lets his guests finish their stories he just helps elevate the story line by a witty comment from his genius comedic brain.
American talk shows tho... A cringe

MPM Stephen probably doesn't like to admit that Graham might be more popular than himself
Juan C Lopez right I love him Graham Norton is the best talk show host.😊
Hippie Ninja really not sure how my response came across as being triggered, you can't just use that anytime somebody says something that you don't agree with.
Must be delusional to think that Graham is only famous in UK. I’m from Far East and my favourite talk show host is Graham. In fact clicked on this video for Graham
I got the feeling that Stephen tried to belittle him a bit. Just slightly trying to exert control in a power competition- but Graham wouldn't have it and didn't play into it. 😆👍
What was with Colbert downplaying his popularity so much? Is he jealous or something? Graham Norton is the best interviewer in the world.
He said some people may not know his C.V. which is true of most of his audience.
Because Americans always put their names first.
"Word of your political situation has reached us." 😂😂😂😂
Pretty much the most British thing he could've said
He’s Irish.
Let's not argue about Graham's nationality friends and get pint of Murphy's and shepherd's pie and enjoy.

N R PROPER english
it shows that the British are very polite and reserved when they comment on things that for others you would get a violent reaction. that he said "political situation" which refers to Trump is kind of a nice way of saying it but at the same time is also mildly sarcastic and knowing that everything is not well in the USA given the current political leadership.
pdgf graham is not british lol
His book and his agony uncle column are both wonderful. He has a very kind, compassionate angle that doesn't always come through in the talk show.
This interview was waaaay too short. I could watch these two at least for an hour.
Stephen Colbert in the Graham Norton show... That would do
Tiia Mannix deffo
American late night talk shows definitely could learn a lesson or two from Graham Norton.
Nameless L I think it's more the American audience that's the problem, James Corden has went from Graham's style of interviewing to basically being Jimmy Fallon with his fake laugh.
The funny thing is in the UK, hosts sit on the left. So, when Stephen asks him how's it like being on that side, I'm thinking: it's the same side.
jetsterx I don’t think it’s specific to the “UK” I think graham just sits on the left. Nothing to do with the UK.
jetsterx graham norton is Irish.
Tara O'hagan he has a UK show and lives in England
One might note that Corden does the same thing, with multiple guests and host on the left and not behind a desk during the interviews..
Colbert's audience definitely have been watching Graham for a LONG time--he thinks his audience needs him to spell things out
