We loved watching him. That night, Jay Thomas was a guest and promoting Mr. Holland's Opus. He started talking about CHUD and pointed me and my buddy out and said we looked like a couple of stoners. One of the greatest nights of my life :)

The new version is so much looser (and thus funnier), and I love how they're more than happy to go off into the weeds with their guests. Having a full hour undoubtedly helps, as it gives more time for shenanigans.

I love this so much! I love Taylor’s comedy, Stephan’s, and so many of the guests on Taylor’s show - especially Maria Bamford. I’m really glad she has mentors like Conan and Stephan and that she’s really succeeding with her work.

My buddies and I went to NYC for a trip in college in the late 90s. We had no money, so watching these live shows were our only form of entertainment. I don't remember who Conan's warm up guy was, but he was hilarious. He saw my Illinois sweatshirt and started making fun of Chicago and Illinois, and we were just dying laughing. I miss these live shows. Conan did come out, but he just welcomed us and went back in.
Agreed! Craig was so silly and heartfelt. I'll never forget watching his monologue about Britney Spears in 2007, where he talked about his own sobriety and treating others with grace. That helped me get sober 7 years later. Such an interesting guy.

Your opportunity with NBC made me so angry I didn’t even want to watch the network channels anymore. Now, as a fully matured adult, as stupid and emotional as it sounds I get the opportunity to show your clips on UA-cam with my 7 yr old daughter that absolutely loves watching you. She thinks you’re hilarious and I know she gets that quality from me. She thought you were great just because you made fun of American girl dolls (she doesn’t like them but doesn’t hate them either) anyways. Thank you so much for cheering me up through dark times in my life and downright pathetically lonely times in my life. I've always thought of Conan as a kind person, but he really showed how thoughtful he is by being aware of Joaquin Phoenix being nervous. How cool to acknowledge and attempt to put him at ease.
The true talent of Conan is how he takes care of people. He will let the meek shine with layup bits for them, he keeps them on track, and makes them their best version of themselves for America to see. Someone not funny? Conan shoots a slam dunk for how gangly he is, crowd loves it, and Conan's standup becomes the guests.

Have you seen the 1980's Scorcesse movie The King of Comedy? The Joker w/ Joaquin Phoenix is heavily based on that. DeNiro was also in it, which ties in nicely.
Surprisingly perhaps, a lot of performers have serious stage fright and hate live appearances. Many film actors are this way, and many musicians probably wouldn't go on a stage unless they were "hiding" in a group. Being the center of attention is not all that easy, even for professional show-offs.
I’d really like to see Taylor get a more traditional Talk Show. After Midnight’s gotten a lot better since the first few episodes but I don’t feel like the absurdist game show schtick plays to Taylor’s strengths like it did with Hardwick. (I also think it works a lot better as a half-hour show than an hour show, but that’s just me.) I’d like to see what Taylor could do with a Graham Norton style format.

They're a mix of improvisation and prepared lines. It's the panel show format. If it relied on pure spontaneity, it would be as dry as if it relied on pure scripting.
