I looked up the other day and a gal at the gym ripped out a vape and trued to hide it. We live in a different world!

Ah, Carnival Spirit. Our first cruise.
Last year, I cruised out of Galveston with a couple of friends. We left on time, but when we woke up the next morning, we learned that we’d had to turn round in the night so that a crew member who became dangerously ill could get back to shore for an emergency surgery. We were going to miss our port in Cozumel.
They gave us some significant OBC and 100% FCC. I was satisfied with that but one of my friends remained incredibly angry the whole cruise. She was so angry that it ruined the cruise for her and, unfortunately ruined our friendship. I still can’t wrap my head around someone feeling that a cruise she paid less than $300 for was more important than someone’s life.
Sadly, this is not an uncommon attitude, especially from American cruisers. There's always some who take any minor hiccup or inconvenience as a personal assault on their vacation. The overblown sense of entitlement seems to be worse now than when I worked on cruise ships between 2007 and 2011. Cruise ships ain't Burger King. You aren't always gonna get it all "your way". I remember one Hawaiian cruise out of San Diego. It's 3 nights to the first Hawaiian port. On the first night out, same day as embarkation, this older gentleman passed away. He and his wife, in their early 90s. This was gonna be their last trip together. When she was told her husband's body would be ready for transport at the first port of call, she said "Oh no. He'd want me to finish our trip together." Sure enough, they kept her husband on ice, and she got treated like a queen for the rest of the trip. Well, didn't SOME people pitch a fit over why SHE was getting special treatment (like having an officer or department manager escort her to dinner and the theatre every night, taking her dancing, someone checking on her a few times a day to see if she needed/wanted anything, making sure someone was available to take her out in each port of call if she wanted to go ashore, etc). There were people genuinely offended that the ship was showing her some kindness.
My friend was on a cruise to Hawaii when a crew member jumped. The cruise ship searched for hours and hours but the crew member was not found. They missed a port but my friend was chill with it because she had the ability to be empathetic and recognize herself as part of a whole and not the center of the entire universe.
Lucky for you to find out this person was such a selfish person!

There is a complete difference between a urgent medical issue and a company that makes billions not fixing their product to actually work.
The problem with the vaping is it still creates an odor, which not always pleasant plus you have to use some sort of ignition for it to work. Cruise lines probably feel these are the safest places for this to happen. People who vape need to look at this from a different point of view- this is the cruise line’s house and they ask you to smoke/vape in an area that they prefer you to do so. No one is forcing you to go on the cruise, but if you do so, you need to comply with the rules and regulations that cruise ship will have so that ALL cruise passengers will be safe and have a good time.

Vape doesn't produce an 'odor'. It produces a scent... more temporary than if you spray ANY kind of air freshener spray in your home- that spray 'scent' lasts longer than the cloud from a vape. That smell doesn't linger around on clothing, furniture or in the air.
@@Knowfere Are you suggesting I should be able to spray air freshener, in public, anywhere I decide I want to? I don’t think I’ve ever owned such thing, but you now have me considering bring some for the elevators where I find people vaping!-- interesting theory.
@@Knowfere I like to carry a mister around with me and mist myself every minute or so. It helps keep my skin moisturized. Yeah, the people around me will get enveloped in a cloud of mist, but it is only water, it doesn't smell, and it doesn't linger.

Definitely agree with NO vaping except for the smoking areas. I don’t want to be anywhere on the ship in a big cloud of vape smoke.
On my last cruise there was a girl vaping close to us at The Alchemy Bar, had to report her. I don’t think they have enough staff to keep an eye on these people. Also a fight in the MDR and the restrooms in the casino area were nasty and the floor wet. The worst cruise ever.
If you cannot go more than a few minutes without vaping or smoking you have a serious issue. Why should anyone else have to deal with it?
We were on the Carnival Pride last summer when the propulsion system mostly failed. The vast majority of people chose to foreshorten their cruise and go home but we were B2B. An entire cruise ship with 300 of us on there for days became the best cruise EVER, we were 100% refunded, given a future cruise credit plus given a cash spiff on top of that. People need to get a grip, it’s a big mechanical boat with the potential for problems. You still get a vacation out of the snafu, roll with it.
If Carnival Vista has been having propulsion issues for 7 years, it’s kind of a no-brainer to NOT take that ship. I can’t believe Carnival hasn’t scrapped her or sent her into dry dock to do a complete engine replacement.
Its kind of a no brainer for Carnival to be responsible or open themselves up to lawsuits from a class action.
You understand Carnival is one of the biggest "entry" brands to cruising right? Lots of people would have zero clue that the ship wouldn't make its route. You don't get a plane ticket from United and they drop you off in Nashville instead of Orlando for your vacation. Its not something a normal person would ever think about.

Tony, you are 1000% right. If people would read what they are agreeing to, they would have known that Carnival can change the itinerary at any time for any reason and they don’t have to reimburse anything but they do because they care about their passengers!!!

Yes, it is fair to lump the vapors with the smokers as vaping is actually worse than smoking for lung health.

RN here...Vaping is more difficult to quit than smoking! It also is more damaging to lungs. Sadly, I have cared for young patients(30s)that had to have lung transplants! Keep them with smokers or even better would be ban it along with smoking all together.
Hi Tony, I am Greek and I live on Santorini island. We are a population of approximately 20,000 and we get almost 5,000 cruisers daily, so that’s a lot. Unfortunately cruisers do not contribute into our economy significantly because they eat and sleep on the cruise ships, so they just buy some ice cream and souvenirs and then head back to the ship. That’s causing a lot of traffic and problems to locals and tourists that come by plane and stay for some days and want to experience the best of the island, so I think the tax is justified

Truly glad we keep addressing these issues and people's behavior and common sense about what to accept and behavior and doing the best for Crew, Cruelines and Passengers, Vacationing etc.

Bottom line they been having trouble with this ship for years.take it out of service no matter how long it takes to get it fixed and you won’t have this problem anymore.putting duct tape and spit on this boat and it’s breaking down every other week is not gonna cut it. If I was on that boat I would be pissed off too supposed to be going to the ABC islands and they drop you off at Nassau everybody goes to Nassau. Unacceptable. Carnival get your act together. $20 euro is $22.17 American shout out Ludacris.

I agree. No way is that a substitute itinerary. And if you don't accept it, how about the vacation time that you scheduled from work--the effort to set up travel and hotel--the travel itself, the hotel costs--all the aggravation that make cruising difficult, etc. I don't blame the angry people.

We have had cruises modified due to storms, engine troubles, etc. We just went with the flow, we were still on a cruise. One cruise that became memorable or "Legendary" was on a 10 day cruise on the Carnival Legend out of Dover, England. When we boarded, there was an announcement made that asked that every cabin needed to have at least one representative go to the theater before the sail away. In the theater, John Heald (the man himself!) came out to announce that a decision was made to make an itinerary change due to a storm in the North Sea. They had a choice to go to the first port in Stavanger, Norway but we would be stuck in port for three days (and miss several other ports) or go to all of the same ports except for one in a different sequence. They cancelled a stop in Belfast and added a port visit in Liverpool!!! Wow, as Beatles fans we were really excited to visit Liverpool. We did a chance to meet John Heald at the Platinum Cruiser party, It was a terrific cruise and one of our favorites.
I have seen video's where a vaping devices have blown up! Don't want them near me. I gave up smoking in the early eighties, so I stay away from smoking areas.
My doctor has told me not to get exposed to smoke or pollutants of any kind. No cigarette smoke, no fireplace smoke from the house down the block, no vehicle exhaust, not even lawn mowers (grass allergy). I cannot take the chance of having smoke near me. I wear an N95 mask whenever I’m out of the house. No cruising for me unless no smoke like devices are even allowed on board.
@@Hawkeye2001 exactly. I have lung damage from numerous bouts of pneumonia, plus Covid in 2022. Luckily, i live in a place where no one gives me trouble about wearing a mask.
I was on the August 10th cruise. The mood on the ship was angry so many complaining. They could have gotten off and refunded. We were going on a cruise just mot the cruise we planned. Spent the OBC and a had a great time. Yes we were upset but we still got a vacation. Made the best of it. I will use my FCC and book anther just not the Vista.
Wow! So they changed it last minute. I was scheduled to go on the Panorama last year. We drove 2500 km from Alberta Canada to Los Angeles arrived 4’days prior to cruise for them to cancel it. Did I cry yes but what could I do the ship needed to be fixed. I would have died for them just to change the itinerary but it was cancelled. Make the best of what you got. If they were given the choice they chose that. You went on a holiday. Count your blessings. It could have been worse.

I was on this cruise and it was fair. Don’t get me wrong, I get the disappointment but, they gave us fair options. People were like they should have told them earlier, but it LITERALLY happened the day before. Just trying th figures out how that would have changed anything as the ship was heading back to Canaveral when it first happened. We stayed on board and had a blast! I get the disappointment but I also had travel insurance and still stayed.
Vaping vs smoking. Very different but if you're concerned about the smell of vape, I would like to point out that some people douse themselves with tons of perfume. I seriously don't see the difference if someone can literally trigger headaches with perfume and a cherry scented vape. If you ban one please ban the other.
I totally loved this show. You have such a well worded approach to issues. I love your positivity in what you say not to put down others. Also, you make me laugh throughout the show. It is uplifting to hear these stories presented in a way to get the message but also enjoy what we hear even if if it is negative news or subject. Doh. There needs to be stronger consumer protections for cruise passengers. When airlines have equipment malfunctions the airlines are require to pay for travel and lodging expenses their travelers incur. It should be require for cruise lines also.
Buy your airfare through the cruise line, and then the cruise line is responsible for your compensation. Or just fly in the day before. I don't understand people who think it's a good idea to fly into the port on the same day as departure.
@@BryanBalakat least when i was working in the 1980’s, I had very limited vacation time. Every day was precious. Having to fly to the cruise port the day before, from a non-hub American city, wipes out a whole precious vacation day. I’m no longer in that position, but i sure remember the problems of working for a major corporation when you haven’t worked long enough to qualify for enough vacation time.

We just did a cruise to the Greek Islands. Santorini is packed. Fira, the town that the cable car goes up to, can get so crowded the wait time in line in the hot sun can be hours long to get on it to go up and go down to get to where the tenders drop you off. It's not a high capacity cable car. Oia is also jammed packed with people. The more ships that are anchored the more crowded it gets. It's that simple. You can't shrug it off and say it's not the cruise ships that are causing the over tourism in Santorini's case. If you go you need to go off peak or right before or after peak season. They need to limit the number of ships that go there at any one time. If we ever did it again I might stay on the ship when it hits Santorini it was that bad.
Yep! We experienced the same situation, awful experience.
We will be there next month and have an excursion planned in Santorini. So thankful our excursion included cable car tickets

Had the same experience at the beginning of June. The port was so crowded they had to slow down the calling of tenders. Our tender was called at 4:30pm……no need to say we did not bother to get off the ship.
This is why i could not get off the ship at Santorini on my May 2019 cruise. The cruise line did not reveal all the details that made it impossible for me to go up - until the night before we reached Santorini. I had to make a major stink, once i got home, to get reimbursed for shore excursion. Holland America.
What I haven’t heard anyone mention is that the Vista has been having propulsion issues since at least May. I sailed May 4th and we spent the night in San Juan while they made repairs and St Thomas and St Martin port days were changed. We were luckily unaffected but I hope they can get the issue resolved soon! I want to go again same ship and itinerary.
I agree with you 100%, based on the information given, once offer was accepted you can't then demand more. Disney can thank their crew for excellent maintenance. I agree vaping and smoking in the same area. hugs to you and Jenny

We sat in the port for 3 days. Rec’d 75% refund and 75% future cruise credit.
People that chose to get off rec’d 100% refund and 50% future cruise credit.
I am an ex-smoker and a current vaper and I agree vaping and smoking are not the same but they are more alike than vaping is to not vaping/smoking and the cruise lines cannot cater to every variable. These idiots should be happy they have any place on board that they can vape because the cruise lines could just ban it altogether.

Those cruisers have every right to feel angry, but they definitely have no right to initiate a riot. TBH, if the cruise lines operates like the airlines, all of these people will be escorted off the ship at the next port, banned for life, offer retracted and reserve rights to prosecute.

It is my understanding that people were not offered the chance to not take the cruise until the ship left port and you would disembark at the first stop. But you had to take care of your return by yourself.
It's sad. Vista is such a beautiful ship. And if they were offered a future cruise plus the revised cruise, I would have jumped at that offer .I understand dissapointments.but they were ridiculous
"Wonderful" memories of the Disney Wonder . . . Alaska in 2013 and the Panama Canal in 2019. Perfect ship size for us.
We did a cruise from Abu Dhabi to Rome. You'll absolutely love Dubai. I agree that traveling to places like that is good for both sides. We learned a lot about their country, by talking with our tour guide and locals & they learned a bit about our country by our interactions with them. That goes for where ever we travel.

The issue with the Vista... When people were talking about what they were offered it differed from what Carnival is saying, so my question to Carnival would be if this is initially what was offered or was it an alteration?
Wow Tony, I too was on the Fantasy 4/13/2017, we went to Key West and had a great time! I find it funny that I follow you and we were actually on a cruise together! Love your show!

Turn lemons into lemonade. To me being on a cruise ship, even without shore excursions, is a vacation. No housework, no cooking, no washing dishes; plus a n onboard credit and a cruise credit, how can you beat it?
I would have stayed and taken the credits, the plan was in place to be gone anyway.
Carnival Vista needs to go into major repairs! Why they keep running it as it continues to have issues. All the credits and making people mad is it worth it?

We did this cruise met MSc a few years ago. My kids still call this the best cruise ever.
I think vaping could be allowed on balconies and outdoor areas not close to pools or food 🤷♀️

Our first cruise was also on Carnival Fantasy, 1996 out of port Canaveral.
I have experienced delays, cancellations, & changes as a traveler. Though some companies reimburse some of your expenses there are still some items that they overlook. For most we plan our vacations way in advance so we have to get dates approved, hotel accommodations, show & restaurant reservations, etc. There was time our cousin visited the USA from abroad & we planned a vacation to Disney World Orlando FL. He only had that specific time to meet us & then they were headed home. We purchased for him & his family airline tickets, hotel accommodations, passes to Disney World & Universal Studios for a 4 days vacation. Airline cancelled the flight and offered a flight 2 days later. So, we had to eat the amusement park passes & hotel expense. Not to mention the expenses we incurred to travel to Orlando (from Ohio) with the sole purpose of meeting him.
Been to Greece but not the islands but I'm sure 20 euros will not stop anyone and shouldn't! Had a great time in Athens and would bet the rest of the country is just as good too!

The fact carnival waited for people to get on to offer the refund is an issue. No one is going to turn back around after waiting all morning to embark, carnival did that maliciously waiting until they basically had no choice to offer.
Your first cruise was in 2017? We have been cruising since 2000. Things have really changed in these time frames. We were on the Panorama with propulsion issues last year. Our 7 day Mexican cruise became A 7 day cruise to Cabo. We were fairly compensated with future cruise credit and on board credit. We enjoyed sun, no cooking or cleaning and were very happy relaxing.

Quick story: I used to be a coaster mechanic at an amusement park. Every year, the week before opening day, we had what we called Family Day. It was the day we opened the park to friends and family for free. Like a dress rehearsal or a dry run before opening the park to paying customers, so we could iron out the details and work out any bugs. One year on Family Day, a big coaster broke down and had to be evacuated. A disgruntled woman in the queue line went ballistic and started chanting " Get it free!" Get it free!" I couldn't bring myself to tell her, it was Family Day and everyone got in free that day. It doesn't get more free than free.
What every you offer these types of people, it will never be enough.
They have to make a scene.

I think if there is a weather issue (force majeure), most people accept an itinerary change. But an engine issue is 100% the failure off the cruise company and so the customers are less likely to cut them some slack, regardless of the terms of service.
Especially since the Vista has a long history of this particular problem. Post covid, cruise lines have been reluctant to take their vessels out of service for much needed repairs because of the strong demand for cruising.
We are on an Icelandic cruise and due to weather we've lost two ports. The captain and staff have been incredible about explaining and helping people understand. Free drinks on a sail away and most people understand. Those who don't, well, that's a shame.
Mods and Rockers in Quadrophenia is even better than Jets v Sharks in my world.
Southern Caribbean cruises cost more on average than Bahamas cruises, so a $400 on board Credit is really just paying the difference of what that ABC islands itinerary would’ve cost, as opposed to the Bahamas area (you are not really getting anything extra here - you’re just getting a refund on what a Bahamas cruise should’ve cost you).

I am not an attorney, but I don't think that clause protects them in this case. You can't knowingly mislead people (they knew the propulsion has been a problem and they have chosen not to fix it).
I would advise all passengers booked on the Vista to cancel their cruise. Maybe that will get Carnivals attention.
Skip Mykonos and Santorini and go to Rhodes. It's an amazing island with something for everyone: ancient ruins, medieval castle, beaches galore.

I can understand that an option was given, but the fact that you can’t rebook immediately and also you cannot get your vacation days back at work everybody forgets the fact that you cannot get your time back at work if you only have a week of vacation and you’ve already used it for that trip there’s no way to get that vacation time back. There’s no time to rebook a cruise. Of course they’re going to be upset. Of course they’re going to stay on the cruise. And according to you they would only receive a full refund but nothing for the time lost at work.
I’m really surprised. They were given the choice of getting off the ship and receiving a full refund or stay on the cruise and receive OBC, FFC. Yet they still protested! Unbelievable! Some people should not cruise, please stop cruising and go to a Sandles Resort instead, or maybe a Holiday Inn.
MSC are a horrible cruise company. I'd never cruise with them again. Also, I notice that Celebrity have removed tips from their Retreat package. That's totally pissed me off. Like that class isn't already expensive enough already 😡😡😡

We were on the Vista from 8/24 to 9/1. Carnival knew the issues prior to our sailing. After our first port the one engine stopped. They gave us a $50.00 per state room credit. All of our ports were shortened. I think the sailing this was for is the 9/1 sailing. We knew that sailing was going to different ports. I cant see how they did not know.
Did someone throw their margaritas over the side of ship and the ship hit the little bit of ice?! Lol
This video just lets me know that Carnival is not the line to choose.
If you are cruising the main point will be the ship experience with ports being an activity of cruising. If a place is the absolute must for your agenda I suggest flying to the place you want to go.
Carnival Vista - they were given two choices. Americans do have limited number of vacation days and many will have chosen a different holiday for the next year. That makes the option of taking a limited time voucher, getting off, paying to travel home or do a land vacation until their return flight, not really viable. So staying on and going to less interesting ports, even with a $400 cruise credit, would be disappointing. Would I have protested? Probably not, as I know they can change itineraries (usually not sfo drastically) and a cruise is fun. Would I be a repeat customer? Maybe not…
Correction. WE were not told until AFTER 330 pm that the ship was broken and the itinerary was changed. Embarkation times were closed and everyone was already onboard when the announcement was made. That contract again 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️...why does the other end of that contract keep getting ignored? Carnival agreed to take us to those ports, not the Bahamas. 2...Carnival has been aware since 2017-2018 that the Vista class ships are "flawed". This is not a mechanical break down...this is a flaw CCL knew about and haven't pulled the ships and taken them back to the ship builder to permanently "repair" the flaw. So please include that when we talk about the " contract". Knowing they have a defective, non- sea worthy vessel and continuing to run it....that's accountability on CCL!
Carnival should not have taken over a month of itinerary changes on the Vista to try to fix the propulsion issues. After the first week they should have known that it couldn't be fixed easily and should have cancelled cruises for a month out. Give passengers some advanced notice and just fix it.
If I had to fly there, I'd be upset. BUT I also fully understand the itinerary policy. We missed Seydisfjordur on our Iceland cruise and yeah it sucked, but we didn't want to get caught in a storm in the fjord.
When it comes to Mykonos and Santorini it's too crowded when there are multiple ships in port. We went in Aug/Sep 2021 on Apex and only 420 passengers on board. The cable car wasn't busy, but Fira was PACKED. I don't think I want to go back now if there's multiple ships in port. 588 stairs is a long way up and down. Trust me!

There is a difference between an unexpected breakdown of propulsion, and a known issue.
I thought (and I might be wrong), that the issue was known before the arrival of new guests and was known for over a week which they could have warned cruisers at least.
But in the end, like to y said, we signed a contract and they can say/do almost whatever they want and the cruisers have to accept it.
You can still get secondhand "smoke" from vapes. It is still hazardous for others to be in the vicinity. Keep them with the smokers!
I would prefer if ships were fully non-smoking/vaping, so I say NO to opening up more areas where either is allowed. I cruise a lot on Celebrity, and on their Solstice-class ships, one of the most popular smoking areas is a bar physically adjacent to the walking track, so every lap around the ship, you're treated to the stench of addiction.
They have to a accommodate everyone. I don't drink but I would never say they should eliminate all bars on the ship.
Skip the cruise??? If that's your only vacation this year or even the next year, the cruiseline is really impacting your life. I don't think that's fair.
Carnival really out here trying to legally scam their guests. 😂
