Whether you're a beginner swimmer or just trying to improve your technique, understanding how to achieve proper buoyancy can make a huge difference. In this video, we'll break down the key reasons why you might be sinking and give you practical tips to stay afloat effortlessly. Let’s dive in and help you become more confident in the water!
Whenever we want to dive deeper into the water, we often find ourselves struggling to go down, fighting the natural buoyancy that pushes us back to the surface. Even though we kick hard and try to force our way down, it can feel almost impossible. The reason for this is simple: our lungs are filled with air, which makes us float. There’s only one way to effectively counteract this natural buoyancy and stay submerged without the help of weights or other equipment - you need to exhale.
By exhaling all the air from your lungs, either through your mouth or nose, you reduce your body's buoyancy and make it easier to sink. Once you've exhaled, relax your body completely. The key is to allow your body to naturally descend without fighting the water. It may feel strange at first because we instinctively associate exhaling with needing to come up for air. However, as you exhale, your body will start to gently sink.
Stay in this relaxed position as long as you feel comfortable, letting yourself become one with the water. It’s important to note that you shouldn't force yourself to stay submerged for too long. When you feel the urge to breathe, calmly return to the surface and take in air. This technique can be incredibly useful for underwater activities like freediving or just becoming more comfortable with submersion in the water. Practice regularly to get a better feel for how your body interacts with the water, and soon you’ll find it easier to stay down and explore the depths at your leisure.
