This video tutorial explains how we paint an illustration using watercolors.
This illustration is a commission for a book about Hayao Miyazaki, published by Third Editions (www.thirdeditions.com/).

The creativity is out of this world
I love Hayao Miyazaki's artwork as well as his movies, many people know the famous movies such as Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, My Neighbour's Totoro and etc, but a true fans can list all the characters from each movies just by looking from this illustration. And this video was really relaxing and fun to watch at the same time.

Very beautiful and really cool style! It's interesting to see someone color in almost the same way as me, so different from all the artists who uses plenty of water with their watercolors! Thanks so much for posting this! I noticed the sky looks a lot smoother in the final cover than in the finished watercolor piece. Less blotchy and more even. Can you talk more about any touch-ups or digital editing you do once you scan the piece?
For the sky: I think we played with the levels on Photoshop and added a subtle blue layer to make the texture less prominent so the title stands out a little bit more.
In general: When we scan a watercolor painting, the scanner transforms all the colors. The file we get is less saturated and some colors (blue for example) are completely changed. So we have to edit carefully the colors to make them match with the original painting (which is very saturated). The fact it's CMYK (because of the printing) makes it even more difficult to get the right colors back.
Aside from that, we don't really edit our watercolors digitally.

Oui, on a rencontré les gens de Third Editions à un festival et ils nous ont proposé de faire cette couverture.
On était super contents !
Quand on vous regarde ça semble tellement simple haha ! En tout cas cela n'a pas été simple mais j'ai réussi à avoir mon exemplaire. Pas encore commencé la lecture mais bientôt je pense.
Tu as eu de la chance parce qu'il s'est retrouvé en rupture de stock très rapidement !!!
On vient de recevoir nos exemplaires et on est super contents : l'impression est parfaite et le design du livre très réussi.
Suis étonnée que le papier ne soit pas tendu, je deviendrais folle avec un papier qui gondole ^^ Très belle illu sinon, j'ai pu voir le résultat sur la couverture du livre, ça donne super bien :)
C'est parce qu'habituellement on fait de la BD : on colore souvent une 20aine de pages en même temps. Impossible donc de toutes les tendre. On n'a pas l'espace nécessaire. Du coup, c'est rare qu'on ait le matériel pour tendre nos illustrations.

Since we do lots of watercolors, we use cheap papers (like "Canson Montval 300gsm" and "Canson C à Grain 224gsm").
There are better papers but they are probably more expensive and those 2 are good enough for us.

Wow it's splendid 💙 i really like the technique.. i have a question.. why did you draw it on printer paper at first and then trace it on watercolor paper? Why didn't you directly draw it on the watercolor paper?
Hi, thanks for your nice words! To answer your question, we don’t draw directly on the watercolor paper because if we make mistakes and have to erase them, it may damage the paper. Watercolor paper is very fragile so it’s better to trace the finished drawing on it and not risk to damage it. We hope it helps!

J'ai une question par rapport au Faber Castell 8b, je viens d'en acheter un pour mes aquarelles et le trait bave un peu avec l'eau. Comment faites-vous pour que dans vos dessin les traits restent nets ?

On n'a jamais eu de vrai problème avec le graphite qui bave. Il faut peut-être souffler sur le dessin avant de mettre la couleur pour enlever les particules les plus volatiles ?
Ceci dit, il faut avouer que le trait s'estompe un peu quand on superpose de nombreuses couches d'aquarelle par dessus. Pour contrer cela, nous scannons le dessin au trait avant la colorisation et nous le superposons au scan de l'illustration terminée, comme ça on peut redonner de la présence au trait.

How come the pencil graphite doesn't get blended into the watercolor pigment? How did you make it happen?
We have made lots of comics pages and illustrations without any problem. Maybe you can blow on your lines before coloring to make the smallest graphite particles go away? Sorry we can't help.

Hello, the paper is “Canson C à grain 225g”.
C'est marrant de te voir "encrer" pour qu'Olivier "ré-encre" à la table lumineuse. Ça ne ferait pas gagner du temps de se limiter à un crayonné très poussé ?
(après, c'est votre méthode de travail, hein, vous avez p'têt déjà tenté et vous êtes aperçu que vous êtes plus à l'aise comme ça)
C'est bizarre : on a l'impression que Cécile s'arrête à un crayonné poussé, justement.
Bon, c'est vrai qu'elle appuie chaque trait, mais c'est aussi pour qu'ils soient bien visibles à la table lumineuse.
Sinon on ne voit rien à travers le papier, surtout pour les petits détails.
(il y a aussi le fait que, comme c'était un portrait de Miyazaki, elle a peaufiné le dessin pour bien avoir la ressemblance. D'habitude c'est moins finalisé.)
