  • Episode 108--Usagi's Dance, In Time To A Waltz, has some American exchange students that have really thick Japanese accents. It never fails to make my friend and I laugh, so I had to put it on the internet. Sorry about the lack of subtitles, but you should be able to figure out what's happening from the broken English.

      The way someone explained it to me was that in Japanese, 'R' and 'L' as separate sounds just don't exist. To them, it's exactly the same thing, with the way they roll the 'R's like many languages do. That's where we get things like "young-u rady".

    • @donnaquixote7538
      @donnaquixote7538 2 роки тому +29

      @@Randoman590 Thanks, I know. I studied linguistics, and [l] and [r] sounds are pretty much the same phoneme /r/ in Japanese, which means they're an interchangeable sound without the meaning of a word in Japanese chaning. One can say they are different allophones (or variations) of the same phoneme.
      Meanwhile in a language like English (or my mother tongue, Finnish), /l/ and /r/ are different phonemes, hence words that would otherwise sound similar like "lady" or "ready" have a different meaning (even though, to be exact, the vowels in these words do sound a bit different).
      In Finnish, the words "rakki" and "lakki" are a so-called minimal pair. The only sound that is different is the first one, /l/ - /r/. "Rakki" means a "pooch" or a "mutt" while "lakki" means a "cap". A Japanese person might hear both words as the same.

    • @Duck_Praise
      @Duck_Praise 2 роки тому

      @@donnaquixote7538 pretty much, /r/ and /l/ in english are both approximants with the only difference being place of articulation, it makes sense that under some circumstances they become the same or a similar sound.

      @@Randoman590 I have 0 experience with japanese phonetics, but from a Spanish speaker point of view it's the fact that their R roll is weak that makes it sound like L. Their R sounds like a very untensed plosive in the alveolar/palato alveolar region.

    You know, I have never understood why anime studios don't have a list of "English-speaking" VAs explicitly for the role of "English/American exchange student."
    I am sure it is hard to find fluent English speaking VAs in Japan, but these roles are usually one-off characters in animes. Just have a few "jobbers" who show up for their dozen lines in one episode, then move on to the next one. I mean, the "English" of these exchange students is often times worse than that of the MCs who, at best, have a couple of years of study and SHOULD have accents.
    Also, the English Auto-generated subtitles are a must!

    • @andylatino
      @andylatino 2 роки тому +130

      American cartoons and animated shows do the same thing when they speak a different language, usually it's the same voice actors who work there who do the voices, many times I've heard them speak Spanish and it sounds funny, of course because they're not natives, I guess it's more complicated to bring people from the outside, unless it's a big or main role they're playing.

    • @samuelzuleger5134
      @samuelzuleger5134 2 роки тому +70

      @@andylatino I get what your saying, and agree. The thing with anime (not sure how familiar you are with anime in general, so no offense) is that any anime set in modern (or even Edo Period) Japan always has at least one episode with "Americans" visiting, usually as exchange students or soldiers, much like in real life Japan. Its predictable as clockwork. Often times, the Main Character VAs have better English than the VAs voicing the visiting "Americans."
      The real kicker is that some anime have (allegedly) bilingual characters. For example, Revy from Black Lagoon. Totally different genre than Sailor Moon, but Revy's whole backstory is that she is Chinese-American, and grew up in the United States. She usually has a line or two in English per episode, and it ramps up for about three episodes in the second season where every other line is English. The story was written before the anime was cast, so you have to wonder why they didn't go with a Japanese VA who had better English. The Engrish is so bad that it is laughable...much like watching some of the FUNimation VAs take their shot at trying to speak Japanese in a dubbed anime.
      I know I am making a mountain out of a mole hill, but it is just funny to think about...especially as anime has moved beyond Japanese-only audiences and is being simulcast around the world. I guess it will just stay a cute quirk of anime.

    • @andylatino
      @andylatino 2 роки тому +42

      @@samuelzuleger5134 yeah I get what you mean, but probably it's because even though anime has gone beyond Japan, for them it's still aimed at them when it comes to the Japanese voices, maybe they think since they make different dubs in other languages that can be changed in each one.

    Edwards's name, while English, (Edowaazu) has a significant meaning to this epsiode.
    The "Edo" in Edwards's name refers to -
    1) The former name for Tokyo. This show takes place in Tokyo.
    2) The Edo Castle located in the Musashi Province. In this episode, Usagi guesses that the students must be from Edo if they can speak English. This goes into the next reference.
    3) The alternate name for the Tokugawa era between 1603 and 1868. During that time, economic growth, strict social order, international policies, and popular enjoyment of arts and culture were all prioritized as part of Edo culture.
    Waazu - the Katakana for the English word "words", which describes things you use to learn how to speak. Usagi's also trying to speak more English, seeing as the only English words she has spoken were words were the Sailor Soldiers' identities, the past and future identities, the transformation phrases, and the moves she uses during battle. She learns by hearing it, and they are said in Katakana form, so it's possible that she might not know that they are English words.

    The way the supposed English speakers spoke English was not cringe at all. It felt more natural than other anime

    I'm not sure what's funnier. This or the dub where they're literally talking about how they can't speak english IN ENGLISH.
    Like they could have made it like French or something. Or just played it with differences in the british accent and dialect. but no, just have these english-speaking characters use english to complain about being unable to speak english.

    When it comes to speaking English, Mina outsmarts Ami for once. That London stay was very useful, good for her.
