    In 2005, Johnny Matheny was diagnosed with cancer in his arm. Sadly, they had to amputate his left arm. After being introduced to Johns Hopkins Applied Physics lab, he qualified for a cutting-edge biotechnology study seeking an amputee or amputees to test a new robot arm - said to be the most technologically advanced robotic arm in the world. Johnny can control his new arm with his mind, giving him a level of motor control impossible until now. In this interview, we follow Johnny's journey from his illness to becoming the real bionic man.

      I'd be happy with anything resembling an arm that I could move if I lost my arm. This is some groundbreaking neural prosthetics research, and I hope that the research gets taken so far that you could almost FEEL things the same.

      I would when they're more advanced & provide more functionality than my current arms. Built in phone/map, swap-able tools stored in the fingers, haptic sensors, etc. We're close to nailing down the basics, shouldn't be that much longer for all of that.

      It's a prototype, dude - with time and more research they'll come in much more symmetrical sizes for various body shapes. For now, he's just happy to have a working arm that's blazing a trail for other amputees to have a better life. As he mentioned, his next upgrade includes sensation so he can feel what it's touching.

    This guy really made my day. How he managed to stay so positive is incredible. The fact he is embracing this and helping push the researchers farther and faster makes me hope he is a household name someday. Maybe someday his face will be in medical and engineering textbooks under the "Applied Cybernetics" section.

      Prototypes and testing, my friend. It's not a finished product, they probably didn't tailor it specifically for him, but I feel they were to sell it to hospitals to use, it would most likely have different sizes.

      Deus Vult the stubs of amputated limbs never look too cool It might be that they collected the nerve ends to the stub and that makes it a bit deformed.
