I think it's because of 3 main reasons: 1) Power rangers has been doing the same thing for years and has not tried to make any drastic changes to the SHOW to appeal more. 2) The writing is so elementary. Like instead of building off of RPM, the Nickelodeon era was such a big regression and I don't know if we've recovered since. 3) I think toy quality and marketing in general has gone down as well. I understand that costs have gone up since but juice isn't worth the squeeze with alot of the main line toys anymore. Which leads me to a fourth point I just thought of: Power rangers as a whole is cheap!
Turtles are willing to try new things, change up the formula, and the writing across most of the turtle shows/movies are good.

I feel like Power Rangers would be more successful if whoever's owning the brand just upped the target audience a little bit. Ironically, I think it’s in large part because the MMPR boom was so huge like you talked about in the beginning. I just think it left such an imprint on ppls brains of what (they think) the show is or is supposed to be. Which is kinda ironic because the entire reason that In Space was such a success and ultimately ended up saving the franchise is because they went away from that early formula. I also think that the name itself, “power rangers”, is just too ingrained in ppls minds as a children’s property.

It's easier than you might think because this happens. Tokusatsu is a children's product and obviously it will have things that will please children, as is the case with protagonists like Zenkai Red, who many adults complain about his personality but he was made with the intention of pleasing the target audience. And they are still low-budget productions, which makes many ridicule these productions. The best way to make your aunt watch Power Rangers is if it either becomes like DC TV series like Arroverse, which has a strong romance tone and things that appeal to a more diverse audience, or like the MCU in its six glory days. with their millionaire budgets making the experience more "convincing" and with that Power Rangers would stop being Tokusatsu and become exactly like Marvel Studios and DC Studios Super Heroes.

The show’s reputation is the result of the way the show has marketed itself. And I think the marketing has relied too much on the generic Power Rangers iconography and not enough on the characters.
Back at the height of Power Rangers’ popularity, promotional materials would show the unhelmeted actors at least as much as the helmeted Rangers. Their heads were incorporated into the action figures, and nearly all VHS tapes made a point of showcasing the actors’ faces. (There are even some VHS covers without a costumed Power Ranger at all!) But after Jason, Trini, and Zack left, the franchise made the decision to stop showcasing the actors’ likenesses as much. And that’s when the franchise stopped being as popular in the mainstream.
People enjoy franchises like the Ninja Turtles because of the characters. But Power Rangers has spent twenty years marketing the show as if there aren’t any civilian identities at all. So of course the general public thinks that the show is nothing but spandex-clad stunt performers fighting silly rubber monsters.

it’s because if you want to collect power rangers merch, you have to buy the same stuff that kids buy. it’s always kid oriented. imagine if whenever they released ninja steel, u were able to buy the super sentai equivalents as a more adult oriented line, but with sounds in english, for a higher pricepoint, oriented at collectors.
the reason dino charge did so well, at least to me, is because the gap was smaller than ever. the dino chargers did everything, but generally nowadays, power rangers is just sentai, but worse. if lightning collection did a dino fury full team in like 2 waves while dino fury was out, it wouldve created a better link, because then, a collector could watch dino fury, enjoy it, and then go out and buy figures that ride the line of “toys for kids” vs “toys for adults” way way better.
especially with dino fury and beast morphers, i feel they tried to compete with sentai too hard, and instead of ending up with “the sentai stuff, but cheaper” we ended up with “the sentai stuff, but worse.” look at how close the cosmic fury megazord and kyuren-oh were in price.
if u want to be an adult fan, you either have to buy the toys meant for kids, or you have to buy stuff that doesn’t make the right sounds. there is no middle ground for english speaking fans, where as with transformers, we had the movie, which had the mainline, and then the studio series better figures, which cost more. we have the kid line, the mainline (earthspark, rotb, etc) and we have the one that’s in the middle of kids and adults, with generations and studio series.

To flourish among younger audiences, the Rangers need to present a world they want to project themselves into. A good first step for a new take on the project is to simplify the role of the Morphin Grid and make it clear IT is what everyone is fighting over. Rangers channel small amounts of The Power to safely act as guardians, people/aliens who absorb too much become monsters. What would YOU choose?
As soon as new generations are generating fan teams of Rangers and Villians, the franchise can make a real impact again.

A reason I think PR has that perception in the current society, Is because of it's inception, and Is something Transformers also Is starting to suffer. Power Rangers began as a toy comercial, while other franchises, like TMNT, began as a comic and the toys came later, what I mean with PR:
Japanese toys -> gave birth to súper sentai -> gave birth to Power Rangers
    Something similar happened with Transformers:
Japanese toys (diaclone) -> gave birth to transformers.
With these brands, they toys came first and the shows were Made to sell them, unlike, for example, Marvel, where the stories were so popular that toys were Made from them. And that idea that PR and TF are just toy commercials, is something very hard for the general public to look past that. The difference is that Hasbro is putting a Lot of money and care into TF to keep it relevant, but is leaving PR to die...
Another thing is that hasbro is not that great handling Japanese brands, look at zoids, it began as Japanese model kits, gave birth to a show, Hasbro brought it to América, had popularity in the early 2000s, and then died, then tried to bring it back in 2018 or 2019, and then died again, and Zoids right now is completely dead in the west and barely surviving in Japan :(
But a show that uses it's full potential of tenage héroes with battle Suits and a giant robot, it's Symbionic Titan, sadly that got cancelled after one season :( , but PR could learn from that show, and with some care, could be as awesome or Even more as what Symbionic Titan was

Has anyone ever entertained the thought that Power Rangers was only ever popular because it was new and different from anything else at the time, but as it became old hat, the novelty wore off? As someone who was 5 at the time, MMPR was absolutely huge, but it became irrelevant with Season 3 after the Movie. While the costumes, zords and some story arcs are iconic, maybe that was what people wanted from it and the brand has been living on good will since Season 3, cutting costs to keep profitable. It's perfectly possible a well written engaging series could revitalize PR for some time, but the concept itself has nothing to offer anymore. It's been done and the series aren't different enough from each other.

When superhero comics started up they were seen by the audiences at the time as stupid, same as when superhero movies started with all of that really changing with the 1978 Superman. But that movie was decades after Superman was created. These products need to be made with love and care by the people who grew up on and surrounded by them in order to fully work, it's why I think a reboot hasn't clicked yet, the people who grew up on Power Rangers are only fairly recently starting to get out into the entertainment industry and all. It's gonna have to be made by people who grew up on it which, thankfully, is a LOT of people since it's been around for 30 years.

I think one of the biggest problems Power Rangers has had as a brand is the fact that it was a show aimed at children, and was basically a 30 minute toy commercial. Even going back to the MMPR days in the '90s, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie didn't do well at the box office in 1995 because it didn't appeal to the general audience. It was made for kids. Same with Turbo in 1997. And because Saban didn't attempt to make the series grow with its original audience, the show just floundered, particularly in the In Space/Lost Galaxy years when Pokemon was just coming out and Pokemania was taking the world by storm. Not to mention the rest of the Anime explosion that we experienced in the late '90s. Later seasons also didn't grab kids the way MMPR did in 1993. PR still had an audience obviously, since there are people who started with seasons like Dino Thunder, SPD, and RPM, but it wasn't the craze it was in 1993. And, again, Disney did nothing with it to bring it to a wider audience in the 2000s. And then when Saban returned and Samurai began airing on Nickelodeon, it was airing on Nickelodeon, which isn't a great channel to begin with for action shows like Power Rangers. So there are alot of elements that go into why Power Rangers never got out of its own way over the years.

Exactly - this is exactly correct! I mean, “Turbo” was just a glorified television special that got a theatrical release - and if an average person who wasn’t a fan of “Power Rangers” as a franchise went and saw “MMPR: The Movie”, they’d most likely be rolling their eyes at how corny they thought it was, and/or being more than a bit grossed out by Ivan Ooze, and therefore not into the film overall.
As such - “Power Rangers” needs to be redone with an older audience in mind, because it seems that the younger, traditional target audience, doesn’t care about it these days.

@@tgif1345 you’re completely correct again - and I still love the 2017 reboot. I think the biggest problem with that particular reboot though, is that the marketing was far too skewed towards a Krispy Kreme tie-in and not enough on mass marketing, and that it tried to just up the bar to a light “CW” type of audience target based on age, thereby rendering it in a sort of “grey area” where you have 13-19 year olds who probably wouldn’t really care about it (due to not enough marketing to change their perspective), and maybe handfuls of young children who’ll see it, buy some merchandise, then forget it.
That’s why I honestly think if “Power Rangers” gets a “The Boys” treatment, you’ll get mass attention - because not only will people will go “whoa, I never thought I’d see this happen!”, but let’s face it: countless parents don’t use or don’t care about parental controls on any sort of visual media device and/or service - so youth from 5-19 on average, are exposed to pretty much all that the internet has to offer, and thereby, they “grow up quickly”, even if they aren’t necessarily media literate, and they’ll want to see the “hard stuff.” Plus again, it would be a “shock to the system” for people to see the “Power Rangers” as far less than pure and heroic, and thus that would drum up attention, and allow writers and show-runners far more leeway to be creative.
It would take courage to do so - but personally, I’d love to see how it would turn out!

If it can tell a story that appeals to more than just the Power Rangers fanbase, but also still feels like Power Rangers than I think a new PR series or movie would do very well. But it doesn't have to be like The Boys to be worth watching. Because that's also setting a dangerous precedent. One that someone already attempted with that fan film, Power/Rangers.

Doing a show that is more in line with the comics would work. More complex story lines, stiry arcs, etc.

  • @BaithNa
    @BaithNa 3 місяці тому +11

I'd say its due to Saban starting the series being very cheap and every subsequent owner treated it the same way because Saban had success with it.
Comicbook characters were treated the same way until the Christopher Reeves Superman movie came out and even then, they were still considered too campy until Batman 89. What changed that perception for comics in the mainstream is when Marvel and DC started making mature cartoons in the 90s, creating a young fan base that takes these characters seriously. When those fans grew up in the 2000s, Marvel and DC grew up with them and created live action movies with more serious tones than super hero movies of the past.
PR can do the same exact thing because they have the blueprint in the Boom! Studios comics. All they have to do is adapt those comics in animation, they can even do it in a prestige format on a streaming service like Amazon or Netflix. After adapting those comica for about half a decade or so, they can adapt thoae stories into live action movies. When they have the fandom hooked at that stage, it'll be much easier to do spin offs of other Ranger teams that appear in the Boom! Studios comics and even transfer the main team from MMPR to Zeo and beyond.
The entire blueprint is there from Marvel, DC and their own comics. They just need an executive to see the potential there and act on it.
Also, moving away from Toku is essential to PR growth because its incredibly niche and off putting to western audiences. We may lose some sentai watchers but thats what it'll take for the franchise to grow. Sentai isn't the soul of PR, action is the soul of PR.

I think it's interesting to note that with TMNT the series continues to evolve and handle different topics that the general public can relate to. Even though there's a ton of different shows, movies, and comics, the series wasn't afraid to deal with more mature topics that both kids and adults can enjoy. Power Rangers especially after the Disney era felt stagnate and they didn't evolve with their fanbase (outside the comics which are amazing). The whole brand was wasted and I do feel like it could've garnered at least some momentum had they taken more risks with it.

It’s like how some people enjoy more darker/serious Godzilla films but then people would be like “but rubber suited monsters are silly.” You can even find this thougjt procenss with TMNT when some people like darker turtles only to get the response “it’s a show about Kungfu frogs, it ain’t serious”

You honestly hit the nail on the head when you Brought up the comparison. Power Rangers is to TMNT(And I guess to an extent Transformers) what stuff like Medabots or Monster Rancher, or Fighting Foodons, or Monsuno(Basically most "Collectable monster" series out there) is to like Pokemon or Digimon. Where on one hand you have these major household names that withstood the test of test of time and at least retained some form of semblence of relevancy in the mainstream zeitgeist, while on the other hand you have a property that had it's season in the sun, but ultimately fizzled out when the next big thing came along, and while it retains a cult following, it still never manages to make any form a major comeback that would get people outside of that bubble talking. Not to mention, Tokusatsu seems like it is the same boat as anime was back in the turn of the century, where it seems very weird, very neiche, very alienating to people outside those very insular bubbles. Maybe if we get another shot at the reboot approach, I could see them giving it a more cinematic flare to fit more in the style of western Superhero media.(Not like full on MCU or DCEU quality, but perhaps something more in line with stuff like the Arrowverse shows?) Hell, If they decide to go the animated approach I could imagine soming along the lines of Voltron Legendary Defenders. The sky's truely the limit, anything could happen.

The series refuses to grow up, so the general audience is gonna assume that Power Rangers is the way it was, because they keep rehashing and rebooting MMPR, instead of moving away from it. Even just recently as over a year ago, the 30th anniversary was about MMPR, and not the Power Rangers series as a whole. Power rangers as a super hero comic is a bad idea. part of the apeal was always the martial arts.
Yes power rangers needs better writing teams. one of the things that needs to leave is the hummor written by people in their 50s and 60s aimed at what they think kids find funny. stop trying to be hip with the kids of the era, and just write good dialouge.
one of the good parts of leaving the sentai behind is that the zords have not looked good in a while and it will also let the writing team give the rangers more stable personalities. no more changing personalities when they morph.

Personally - I would say that “Power Rangers” needs a “Hard-R” reboot treatment and one hell of a marketing campaign in the vain of “The Boys” - in the sense of how the latter property really cemented a place for itself in an extremely crowded superhero entertainment field.
As such, I still think “MMPR: The Movie” could’ve done this (in how the film upped the action and violence with the Oozemen versus Power Ranger fight scenes, and the “leap to our doom” segment) - yet instead it fell into the “gross out” and/or “shock value” humor trap with Ivan Ooze and Mordant, a trap that still haunts “Power Rangers” to this day (“Ninja Steel” being a prime example). This aforementioned “trap” thus ends up alienating audiences because overshadows everything else, and thus makes the entertainment property seem immature, and otherwise unfit for mature audiences.

I think Power Rangers needs stripping back to become Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and that in my mind is using the same formula that Mattel and Paramount have done with Masters of the Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles respectively.
If you look at TMNT and MOTU, both very similar to MMPR being iconic kids brands from the 80s/90s. Each of those franchises have had in recent years, the kids that loved them as kids, take them on as adults - Kevin Smith with MOTU and Seth Rogan with TMNT.
So what next? Well if I were Hasbro, I'd cut my ties with it and sell it all off to the highest bidder - be that Netflix or Paramount. Hasbro right now need to contract and start selling off these brands if they want to succeed.
Secondly, Whoever takes the job to reintroduce MMPR - you build a team of creative people who loved MMPR and develop an ANIMATED, low budget origin story that is either a animated movie like TMNT Mutant Mayhem, Transformers One or Masters of the Universe: Revelations, you make it for the adults who were the obsessed kids in the 90s and hope that they now have their own kids to spawn a new show like TMNT: Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Playmates are coming with the toys, just like TMNT, their relationship with Paramount/Nickelodeon seems to be strong - and Power Rangers seems like it could be a good fit - but start small, keep things quiet until theres something to say.

Doing toys that are the same or better than the Japanese and just stick to adapting super sentai story to pr, because that's what pr is. Also they need to stop bringing mmpr back. Also releasing everything they show it the shows like super sentai does, also they should re-release older pr toy line's.

The thing is why should a company try and see a potential in a over 20 year franchise? PR should have showed there potential years ago

At this point, it’s not that easy. Power Rangers popularity has went downhill, I think either Mystic Force or Operation Overdrive in the mid-2000’s and when the 2010’s came out, I think it went downhill with Dino Charge Season 2 in which lead to the 2017’s reboot movie flopping at the box office in which lead to Hasbro.
I agree, Power Rangers is the hardest brand to challenge because of its reputation of being like your “Babies first superhero type”.

@@aditbiju3717It went downhill way before that. People stopped taking it seriously once Turbo added a child ranger and In Space helped revive the franchise for a second but the damage was done.

I think the difference of the perception of power rangers and tmnt is that it had went through different reincarnations for each different audience like the bay movies and the tmnt 2012 tv series unlike power rangers still not changing at that point
