Subaru WRX STi Review - 25k miles

- I got up, checked the odometer of my STi and saw that I hit 25,000 miles. It was time for a new review: the 25,000 WRX STi review. I'm trying to do these reviews pretty regularly for you guys: every 5000 miles from now on. I get inside, turn the car on, and the dash lights up like a Christmas Tree. The check-engine light came out, along with the Hill Assist, ABS, Traction Control and Cruise Control Lights. I turn the STi off and go online to check whether anyone else experienced these types of symptoms. It turns out that there are a few people with the same types of issues. I decided to clear the code and move on with my day. The light hasn’t come back on.
In this review of my Subaru WRX STi, I’ll break down a few negatives and a few positives of owning the STi at 25,000 miles. Some of the negatives include the check-engine light coming on, the cheap Subaru paint, the constant rattling inside the cabin, the cheap speakers, and the wind noise that’s caused by the roof rack. Some of the positives include the roof rack capabilities, the suspension, transmission, @BremboTube brake system, Remark Exhaust that gives the STi that rumble, and the overall fun factor.
Since I know you'll ask, here are a few parts that I talk about in the video
Remark Exhaust
- Axleback + Mid Pipe Combo for Subaru WRX/STi VA (2015+)
- Non-Resonated Mid-Pipe + 4" Stainless Double Wall Axleback

Thanks. Probably the gas cap.....great cars - own a 19....no issues. Fewer miles. Like your video style of just facts....keep posting please.
I like your sentence of just facts 😂😂
Cheers for the honest review!
Thanks Andrew
I traded in my 9thgen si for a 16 sti, the paint on that Honda scratched if you looked at it, haven't had problems with subaru paint
I know the feeling when the wild check engine light appears. Mine happened a few days ago. It was for evap pressure sensor high circuit code. I tried filling up my car and the gas wouldn’t go in and pour out as if the tank is full. I guess it’s to be expected since I’m driving a stage 2, 2011 wrx with 179,000 km’s. This is probably my third or fourth check engine light in the 3 years I’ve owned the car. So far no major issues such as head gasket or rod knock 🤞.
I’ve done nothing else other than catback exhaust. Once I go stage 2 it’ll be worrisome
Car Mod Guy definitely keep some extra money in savings just in case.
I'm debating...to void the warranty or not to void the warranty. That is the question.
Hey, thanks for being honest with your review. The STI has been my dream car since I was 16. Now, I am in my 30's and I am about to pick up my brand new 2020 STI next week. I think I can handle the rattling and the paint issues. My biggest concern is the check engine light. Did you do any mods to the engine? I intend to keep mine stock, but if it shows issues after only 25k miles, I am getting kind of concerned. Can you give us an update video on what the dealer comes up with when you take it there? Thanks!
I had the same issue as him and the dealer said it was just a bad sensor near the exhaust. Maintain the car well and everything will be fine. I'm basically your age and bought a 19 when they came out. The car has been flawless and mine is completely stock. I also have paint protection film and ceramic coating which helps with the paint issues it's worth it.
If it comes back on I will be heading to the dealership and will provide you with an update. Also Jay X12 will hopefully find his paperwork 😁 and shed some light.
I had the same issue with the dash lighting up and then after a couple days went away but then would come back on. The dealer said I had a bad sensor near the exhaust? I need to find the paperwork but no issues since that was replaced under warranty. Outside of that my 19 sti has been flawless mechanically. Doesn't seem to burn oil and I haven't noticed any rattles. Very accurate review as I just hit 30k last week. And yes the brake dust is insane! My front wheels can be caked with dust and my rear wheels still shiny lol.
If you do find what the issue was let me know. The only upgrade that I have is a catback exhaust sooo who knows...maybe it’s cooked. I drive the STi pretty responsibly so honestly there really shouldn’t be any other issues with mine either.
@@CarModGuy found the paperwork.
Customer states the check engine lights keeps coming on.
Scanned for trouble codes, P000D "B" camshaft position slow response
Performed diagnosis and testing per P000D dtc flow chart. R&R bank 2 LH exhaust oil control valve, cleared memory and changed oil and filter. Performed drive cycle T and monitor mode 6 test result and value readings. Mode 6 drive cycle test values within normal range after repair, all operating as designed.
This fixed the issue for me and this was in early June.
So it was just the oil and filter and the exhaust oil control valve?
@@CarModGuy yeah the control valve. They replaced it and did my oil and filter while I was there. Been good ever since!
If it comes back on I’m taking it in and I’ll mention that. Thanks for the details!
Hey man, love the videos! Any issues with the STI yet? Still debating the STI vs the Type R and the only thing I am worried about is the STI engine reliability
If you're spending the money on an sti. I would get an extended warranty, you'll love the car!
I have a 2011 STI and no rattles lol. I do have an SPT exhaust.
You lucky bastard
@@CarModGuy I think it might be a sedan thing lol or an aftermarket exhaust. Since I have an STI hatch never heard any rattles even after I upgraded my sound system to JLB speakers. I hate rattles I sold my old WRX blob eye for that reason with no accidents and with 100k miles.
Very good video. Question do your brakes squeal? My 2019 STI’s brakes squeal when I am stopping.
Yes. The only fix is to just keep washing them. It’s due to the brake dust. Pressure wash the crap out of them. Hence why I said why I’ll be getting new brakes 😁
Car Mod Guy ya I have 19 too. Lots of dust but good pads. You can slam on them really hard couple times will help quiet down for bit but just clean them
lol I haven't tried just slamming on the brakes :)
Put fresh copper grease on backs a pads it should help
I've got a 2019 STI with 14,000 miles & the brakes squeal now that it is summer. They never squealed in the fall & winter.
Lol! Lol! Lol! If you are keeping the OEM radio, Kickers make a set of speakers for those who want to upgrade the system on a stock radio; otherwise, if you get, let's to say an Android unit with something better than the kicker's speakers an amplifier will need it. Could not agree more with the brake dust on the wheels is ridiculous. Great vid brother.
Haa. I see you saw my shoutout 😁. I think I’m going to try the JBL speakers. Always liked the brand. No amplifier required. I’ve seen the Android headunit and it seems like the top sticks out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. It’s not flush with the trim. Not sure if all of them are like that or just the one I saw but that was one of the reasons that I decided to keep the stock unit. I’ll check out the kicker speakers as well. Thanks Mel.
@@CarModGuy Yeah, that was really nice, much appreciated. Check your email I send you some pics of the Android unit on the car. On a side note, if you pull the door panels, make sure you use some electrical tape on the holes where the plastic clips/ screws attached the panel to the actual door; this will help damper any rattles... cause we know how much you love rattles! Lmao! Take care.
Thanks bro. Just saw your email. Looks awesome. May have to consider it
Do you still have the stock tires? How have they held up? Any recommendations for all seasons?
I do actually still have the stock tires on and they're still really good. I haven't shopped around for tires, but you can't go wrong with Michelin's. I'll probably be looking at Michelin, Pirelli, and Toyo when I'm ready to swap tires.
Car Mod Guy are you sticking with summer tires or switching to performance all seasons?
Probably all season even though the summer tires really gave me 0 issues even through snow/slush
Car Mod Guy thanks for the reply! Keep the videos coming! They are great!
Appreciate that! Will do
How often do you take your car in to change the oil? Based on mileage, month?
Jonathan Ly I’ve been changing it every 5000 miles...and topping off twice in between.
@@CarModGuy So as a former Subaru tech, for some years. I can say that Subaru falsely made the STI a 5000-6000 mile oil change interval. It's still a belt driven motor and the engine should only reach 3,000 miles on each oil change. So from what you said, the twice in-between of adding oil. That definitely explains why you need to add oil in-between changes. I have been watching your videos a lot and noticed that was one of your concerns! Hope this helps you out man, for the longevity of the motor👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Johnathan. I was just about to switch to the 3k oil change frequency. Seems strange that the same engine needs to have its oil changed at different intervals. Also strange that Subaru is still recommending the 6k oil change frequency.
@@CarModGuy Yeah, regardless of what Subaru says their cars go for. The 5w-30 motor is a 3,000 interval and the 0w-20 motors should go for 5,000. That's how we based it in the dealership. It's probably the engineers recommending those numbers. They don't see the issues we see as technicians. But keep up the good content man!
Appreciate it!
Bro, you can not do the 5000 miles oil change on STI, EJ257 should change oil every 2500-3000 miles, first oil change should be just after the break in period(1000 mile), this may be the reason why you burning oil.
First oil change was done at 1000 miles on the dot. The dealership (Subaru) is the one that said every 6000 miles. I came in every 5000 miles. I've switched to 3000 miles and have been doing it myself. I'm measuring the oil level and recording the process every weekend; I'll post my results before the next oil change.
Does the sti really drink more oil then then WRX fa motor?
flatbush fonz yes. Yes it does
@@CarModGuy I have a 2020 wrx and I don't see much of oil depletion, did you have the same problem when you had wrx
flatbush fonz not at all
@@CarModGuy maybe try a air oil separator. Maybe that will help
Yup I think I mentioned that in the video. It’s in my cart.
hey man, what speakers did you order? I am in the same boat as you. the stock speakers are awful, i installed a mini sub woofer, but the stock speakers are very bad to listen to. What do you recommend?
Also, wanted to mention, your exhaust sounds great. I heard you mention nameless. I do have a nameless catback exhaust system which I decided on probably like 2 - 3 months ago. It's 4 inch mufflers and tips. If you were considering going nameless, I would very much recommend it. Welds are done very well and sounds incredible (they definitely know what they are doing there). No droning in the cabin which is what I care about personally, and it's not too loud and not to quite. Getting on it sounds amazing. Sometimes I find it hard to not do spirited driving lol. But i have about 9500 miles on mine and haven't noticed any oil burning. When did you spot yours?
Hey Christopher. These are it right here. I haven't ordered them just yet...they're sitting in the cart :)

Thanks man! I liked Remark for all of the reasons that you just said. I eliminated the mufflers and the resonator...so drone :) . But thanks for the quick review of the Nameless system. A few people have asked me about them before and I couldn't give them an honest response since I didn't have experience with the company.
I have a set of Nameless axlebacks that I ordered for my 2019 STI sitting in the garage!Haven't put them on yet!Too busy working,
It shouldn’t take more than an hour. You’ll be thanking yourself when you do
bla bla bla bla! direct to the point!
