Hi Kenan, rats can still get through the 1”x1/2” cage… please cover them with 1/4” hardware cloth. 40 years owning a rodent control company in Los Angeles
You are correct. We use 1/4 inch hardware cloth for all our chicken runs. Rats are not a huge problem in our area (yet), but it stops the raccoons and skunks from reaching through, grabbing the birds.

Anything your thumb can fit through a rat can. Lol. Thats my rule of thumb. I work for Joshuas pest control.

Excellent idea, I adore the little redfoots. They are so very sweet.
The jams in this video were so sweet I had a difficult time doing anything but dancing.
Knowing Florida and problems with ticks and fleas, have you ever considered getting some guinea fowl, or even some chickens, they would be dual purpose, not only do they eat ticks, they produce eggs. Hope this new setup works out well for you. Thanks Kenan and Matt

Nothing like a little ingenuity, creativity and elbow grease to make an impressive little nursery for the baby tortoises. Projects like that are so fun. You should name that little guy nibbles or chewy. Because he's been "nibbled" and or "chewed" on.

Mice and rats can get into small spaces because they can flatten their bodies. Please check with someone to verify that the cages are going to protect the new little turtles

I have a dog crate that I have been thinking of converting to an outdoor daytime home for my baby Dalmation tortoise. This video is right on time for me, thank you!!
Just be aware rats can get through a dog cage bars, raccoons can also reach their arms through and shred your animal through the bars piece by piece, they did it to quail I kept in a rabbit cage outside once.
Fine hardware cloth needs to be put over the entire outside. I've had too many birds lost to predators to imagine risking something so expensive as a tortoise.
The cage he's using isn't enough to keep rats out, I hope he adds the hardware cloth.
@@danielled8665 did the racoons get your quail during the day? Racoons are usually active after dark and the person who's talking about using a dog cage for his turtle during the daytime.
@Debra Anderson early morning generally. The foxes will get them by day though.

Hi Kenan Such an excellent idea to recycle your unused cages. The baby cherry heads, and red foots will love it. Very nice water feature. Matt is so helpful, and does fantastic camera work. Such good advice from people to help keep the rats out.❤🐊🦎🐍🐢Cindy

A few carabiner clips might be a good solution to add additional safety latches on those baby tortoise cages; two on every door (one on each side). They also have the clips with the little screw bolt fasteners in the middle. Cheap, quick & easy.

But that mesh size might not keep out small/juvie rats. You might consider building an enclosure to the same general dimensions, using a pipe iron frame wrapped in 1/4 hardware mesh.

I think I would put a strip of plexiglass across the bottom so they won’t stick their head or feet out the wire.
Amazing idea kenan, you dont always need to throw away when you can recycle.
Such a nice enclosure for the babies to grow up in, but rats definitely will be able to get through those gaps, I'd reinforce it just for peace of mind. Also do you no longer have the elongated tortoises?

I think you should find a way to brace that cage to the ground so that nothing can move it.
Hello Kenan, l think the name Squeak or Squeaker. Squeak after the rat that chewed on them, or Squeaker for the rat temporarily turned the little red foot into a squeaker toy. l think those name choices would be both cute and fun.

😂😂😂. I just did that with an old huge rat cage we had in our back room. We laid a huge three story critter nation rodent cage on its back and removed the ramps inside so its just a huge vinyl wire mesh enclosure for my hermanns tortoise. Escape proof so he cant dig out. That how we found him he escaped from somewhere or was let loose on the golf course near my house and made it to mine.
