    I love this video! A lot of people don’t know how to treat fungus on their turtles. I just treated tail rot on a bearded dragon I rescued recently. It can be a scary thing for beginners who are raising reptiles.

    Love how you explain that in the adults, it’s not as much of a concern. This is just something that comes along with keeping animals in enclosures, even when they are outdoors. It’s not that these illnesses don’t occur in the wild, but they spread more easily in captivity. Great methods of treatment and I like the minimalist approach with the adults, only treating as needed.

    I would change all their bedding as well. Any molds or bacteria could make things worse.

    Fun fact --
    Kenan's relationship with the red foots and cherry heads has NEVER been the same since those tortoises watched the Prequel Trilogy!
    They tolerate the "Jedi scum" (their caretaker and his Padawan, Matt!) but are still eager to follow the example of their idol, Darth Maul, and overthrow the Kamp fence!
    Too bad no one told the red foot clan that small LED flashlights do not make good lightsaber substitutes!

    So true about the wild. Captuve bred and raised tortoises; most of them will survive from egg to adult. In the wild you're lucky if only 80-90% die and you get 20-30%making it.

    SCUD is not caused by a fungus, it is primarily caused by a bacteria (which is why the more common, modern name for this is usually broadly called bacterial dermatitis, for all reptiles, among other names like ulcerative shell disease). Fungus is usually only secondary, need to treat it with antibiotics, not just anti-fungal cream. Vet manuals usually recommend antibiotics and topical iodine treatments for this reason. (It is also extremely rare in tortoises, usually only in turtles)

    Question Kenan: Should you have giving them some new dry substrate? I'm just curious, because it seems if they got the fungus from their substrate being too wet.

  • @cynthialbell9023
    @cynthialbell9023 Рік тому

    Hi kenan Those little cherry heads are adorable. It's good that you check out your tortoises every day. I am glad the he fungus is easy to gently scrape it off, and can add some inexpensive cream for feet fungus, or get a cream from a vet that treats tortoises. Make sure that their enclosure is not to wet, from the rain. Nice to know that you can put some petroleum jelly on the fungus on the shells of the adult toroises. Loved this video. You talked about such important treatment for fungus on tortoises. And that people who own tortoises should give them a good check out every day, for any problems. Love your channel,came all of your reptiles. Cindy

    Random thought but would something like a toothbrush not be beneficial for scrubbing vs metal tools? I've only had a Red ear slider before but used brush for his shell while shedding or to clean algea off him.. just curious as I do know tortoise and turtles are different and maybe being a dry species, it's a dryer and harder fungus to remove than algaes

    Hi Kenan, I have a question. Would it be harmful if any of those remedies got on the food that they walked over on and they ingested it ?

    • @jebVlogs556
      @jebVlogs556 Рік тому +1

      Not really 😅cause you are applying only a miniscule amount on your turtle friends: silver sulfadine, petroleum jelly, or even for people have skin growth of what medical condition of Cartine "the hardness of skin" you basically end with rhino or elephant-like texture of skin. It's mostly 😅with people who with diabetes or very bad skin blood flow. Ammonium lactate, comes in white bottom with a blue/red label similar to "silver sulfadine" but with ammonium lact- you rub it on the infected area and wrap with Gauzes(you can buy it at the 99c cent stores,dollar general,family dollar,dollar tree and it's about $1 for the gauzes. You can just grab your turtle buddy up,and they can go about their day with everyone else

    Silver sulfadiazine is an excellent topical antibacterial my MD has actually prescribed to me. It’s used primarily as an antimicrobial/antibacterial and for 2nd/3rd-degree burns. It’s a sulfa drug that has silver salts in suspension, I had no idea it had an application in herp husbandry. You bestow a plethora of knowledge upon us poor plebs! Those instruments you’re using are actually dental tools and can be purchased online through medical supply outlets (just fyi.)
    Oh yeah, btw; a “schmear” refers to the cream cheese not the Nova. You’ve been away from NY too long buddy!

      I heard that Eastern Box Turtles are actually invasive in certain UK forests now. People used to pay HUGE amounts to import them. Europe has far fewer native turtle/tortoise species than the US.

    • @danielled8665
      @danielled8665 Рік тому

      @davidvento5481 yeah they are more tolerant of lower temperature and higher humidity. Issue is people getting them and not keeping them in secure enclosures, or releasing them when they get bored. People need to be better educated about animal care and responsibility, rather than prohibited. If they're both invasive and common, sounds like a good time to go for a nice walk in the woods with a box.
