Always fit good quality links as the cheap ones only lasted me 3 months.
I discovered you can change these drop links without jacking up or removing the wheels.
It took me about an hour as the extra time it takes undoing the nuts is saved by not removing the wheels.
Turn the steering on full lock and you can get to the nuts while laying on the floor.
Remove the top joint first as it helps with removing the bottom one.
I found replacing the nearside easier probably because I'm right handed.
I bought a pair of droplinks off eBay for £11 but they only lasted 3 months.
This is quite an easy job and stops that annoying knocking noise.
Although this was done on a 2008 1.7CDTi Corsa it should be the same for most of the Vauxhall range
Probably one of the best done how to videos iv seen. Shame he doesn't do it anymore. Camera work and closeups are really good. I watched all of it even though I just wanted a reminder as it has been a while since I needed to do this. Well done mate.
Very nice video. Good, calm and professional! Thank you.
thanks, I like making these :-)
Hi guys does any one no if I have to grease the new drop links as they look dry
The lubrication is under the rubber so no need to use any extra grease.
i have a 09 cdti insigina the 2 rear tyres r worn on the inside what could this b
Andy Mcgall Could be the camber of your wheel
Very good camerawork on this video! Thank you for making it so clear and focused.
you should put the wheel nuts on skipping one each time e.g. bottom right nut on, thentop left, then top right, then bottom left, then top
nice and clear video, howeverit must be noted that very few of these links will be as clean and corrosion free as this. Most will be well seized and may, in extreme cases, require cutting off with a grinder.
My suggestion is always use axle stands, good quality penetrating fluid and use lots of bad language...works everytime for me.
Thanks for the clear vid
Excellent ,loved the bit at beginning highlighting the knocking noise we all hear. Instructions and pictures could not be clearer and good safety tip using wheel to support car as those jacks can never be trusted .
They are generally known as Widowmakers. Make of that what you will ;)
Good Luck at 5:26 when the Droplinks have been on 6+ Months. I usually use an Angle Grinder where the spanner's going ;) Torques: Wheel Nuts: 110Nm Drop Link Nuts: 55Nm, cheers!
Great video, thanks! Very clear and well spoken advice with great camera angles, and crisp footage of parts and what to do. Thanks, really helpful 👍
hi, yes its the same basis if you take a quick look you will see its as easy as the front, i have done them
If you shake a sway bar and it makes that knocking noise.. doesnt it indicate bushings are the problem ??
Cool man! Nice vid, very professional the way you have taped it; one of the best DIY videos on the web, Congrats pal; cheers from Rome!
look at the quality of videos 12 years ago, simple, calm, closeups all the shots are fixed, work done during the day not in a dim garage.
H Lotey, Your problem may be related to the anti-roll bar bushes.
Trace the bar down from the top of the drop link to where the bar is fixed ( via rubber bushes ) to the sub-frame. Change them.
nice...although those standard jacks give me the creeps..I also always use to axle stands and the jack at the same time.
Good vid!
People never use the jack alone for those works! The axle stands is not sure enough .I use an hydraulic jack and a solid wood piece.
I use a 3t trolley jack and axle stands
Thanks. There are so many of these kind of videos that just show the back of some guys hands. Really good job.
Almost definitely the best 'how to' videos on youtube. Awesome.
It might be worth replacing the 2 anti-roll bar bushes under the car. That will probably stop those other sounds. And if you replace the suspension top rubbers it can make quite a difference to the ride..
that noise was the roll bar bushing ,mate.
Great video. Vauxhalls are usually friendly cars to work on. 65 nm of torque is the right spec on the swaybar nuts😊
sorry dude u said they are track rod ends but those are drop links... not criticising just pointing it out, great vid
this tutorial is amazing. nice camera positions and clear easy steps...good job
Agreed! Best fixit video I've seen. No assumptions of existing knowledge. Really good video, clear and simple piece by piece instructions. Idiot proof!! He really should go back to doing this money to be made for sure!!
Curiously the video is quite well done and methodic. But you got me surprised on the how's and why's!
Please correct me if I missed something. As demonstrated right at the beginning of the video. You replaced the drop link, to supposedly solve a noise (problem) clearly coming from the anti roll bar!
That make as much sense as drying the bathtub, before taking a bath! LOL 😂
Like mentioned, as demonstrated. If the drop link is not even connected and the noise clearly come from the anti-roll bar. Why in the world would you change the drop link instead of locating and fixing the problem that caused the anti roll bar clicking noise!
Which most probably is caused by basic and common worn out bushing(s)!
Talk about incorrect diagnostic, pointing to incorrect intervention!
Well done that was clear and simple and really informative for a guy who has limited knowledge about the various parts talked about
Help appreciated!!! I am fixing bits on my honda civic ej9 and one of my MOT failures was "Offside front anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint". However if I change the Anti Roll Sway Bar Drop Link will that fix my problem as no one can give me answer. Appreciate any help or advice
Awesome video! camera angles were great, good explanation on tools and parts your installing. I especially like how you used the factory jack and used the tire as a jack stand. it encourages people to get out there and work on their own vehicle. well done!
dear Chris Fix I have to know what's still keeping my 2004ford explorer gliding swaying in the rear and it's getting worse 500.00later new ball joints except for rear ball joints they said that they were fine .I've replaced control arm bushings 4new tires 4aignments .I'm at the end of my rope .I've drive for a living I'm loosing money with this shit .next struts are original factory installed I've got166.000miles never had an issue until it was towed from the rear what in the he'll is this why why. somebody help????!!!!
Excellent, Clear concise instruction. Well Done!
Absolutely brilliant video, all in clear detail, I can do my combo van nice and easy now, thankyou for such a good vdeo
Like the tip of taking the strain off the sway bar by jacking the other side off the ground, game changer for changing drop links!
thanks for the vid man. I bought a used Astra (same car different name) I'm here In the states. I received mine used but in near mint condition I used Moog sway bar links. I also used a quick pump 3ton Jack instead of the GM jack. now that the car is 10 years old I would recommend pb blast and saturate the bolts for 30 min tap the nut/bolt with hammer a few times spray again and the old nuts twist right off. atleast they did for me. thanks again great vid.
Can someone please help! Am having a slight issue with my car its a vauxhall astra j 2011 everytime i drive on small humps it rattles m.o.t tester told me its my top strut mounts so i got it changed costing me £170 parts and labour and it didnt solve the issue same mechanic now saying it could be my shockers which will cost more no mechanics seem to know either it only happens when on rough road surface what could it be? Thanks.
I'm confused. If you disconnect the anti-roll bar link, wiggle the anti-roll bar and hear the noise, then isn't the problem at the anti-roll bar and not at the link?
Awesome video thank you i sttill got in my library the complete strip dowm of the iphone 5 which i did after watching your complete strip down and rebuild .very clever man you are.greetings from Nottingham United Kingdom.
How did you undo the nut so easily? Haynes says they should be torqued to 48lb ft so to undo them with 15 years of rust will mean more torque than that. You must have biceps like a carthorse. I undid the top nut with a breaker bar but I'm still struggling to budge the lower nut.
hi,i have a 2003 cd astra,it pulls badly to the left, any ideas what it could be.thanks.
I hope in the last 8 years you got yourself a proper jack to use. You should never use the crappy jack that comes with the car for anything, they are useless, slow and bloody dangerous. Although I see you’re using the wheels as axle stands so it ain’t bad but get a hydraulic jack mate. Also your link rods look decent so you didn’t need to cut them off but a lot of times the only way to get them off is to cut them or use an impact gun on do up to snap it off. I always have to cut them or snap them.
having not encountered this type of link rod before, worth watching prior to getting stuck in. VW Polo 9N has a very similar set up
Plain simple straight to the point thankyou for taking the time to show us
Thank you so much mate! was dreading this, I feel very confident in trying it myself. Thanks again.
Hi.could you help me ive got vertical movement on my vectra t reg what coukd that problem be its really noisey aswell when I hit bumos please help its sending me barmy ive had new shickers futted because a garage ssid that was the problem but thuddjng still there cheers
Amazing video. Today you saved me over $250. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work !!!!
thanks for the video i fixed my corsa o3 thanks to it :) alls i needed was a 16mm an a 19 mm to do it an the jack an tha. was realy easy. garage said theyd do it for 70 pound with parts, i got the the parts right an left front anti roll bar linkage for £13.40 an it took me about 2 hours to do only cuz the nuts were old an so hard to get off an i took my time. again thanks for the video so much, top man!
Thank you for posting this. Do you need to replace both drop links at the same time even if one of them has no problems? The parts supplier says you do but I don't see why it should be necessary.
I did this the other day and took can't for mot today and they said I put it on upside-down???? I put it on exactly the same as yours. Only difference is that mine is the plastic type
Mine's just starting to bang now and getting louder, I can't afford to get it replaced for at least a week, would it be ok to run on it for that time? Thanks.
I have to agree. An exemplary instructional video
Its hard to simulate the movement when the wheels is off. If the mileage is high it might be worth changing the rubber suspension tops as well these drop links. I've recently had to replace another set of these after only 45k miles..
VauxhallHelp brilliant bid bruv,,, I can now do my combo van easily,,keep em comin
Just wrote a comment further up. You could replace them every week that would NOT solve the clicking noise problem! As you demonstrated in the beginning of the video.
You could completely remove the drop link from the vehicle and the noise would still be there!! You show it yourself. Without the drop link connected the noise was present and evident. So you're "fixing" the wrong part... It will really not matter how many times you'll change the drop link. The problem will still be there UNTIL you fix the real culprit. ;-)
What a pity an excellent video, but failing right at the first moment!
Thanks for this great tutorial
Brilliant video, thank you👍brilliant video, thank you👍
I wish my car was as easy as that. Had to get a grinder and chop the damn thing as it was well rusted with all the salt and grime over the winter!
I need to replace my strut bearings.. They make the worst noise ever.
Brilliant vid, really appreciate you taking the time mate. Big thanks
well i wish my nuts would come loose as easily !! guna have 2 get a grinder me thinks :(
is it the same principle on the rear? my vectra has a knocking sound coming from the back wheel?
Excellent video. I like the way no special tools are used, just the stuff anyone would have. I would use axle stands and a trolley jack, but then some folks beginning d.i.y. wont have them. Well done...and thanks for taking the time to do this.
What positions would you put the trolley jack and the axel stands in? Don't wanna go through the floor.
Hello, is it possible to hear this noise on 0:08 when I am turning on the right side from the front left wheel?
Correct, it won't affect the tracking at all
Superb! Is it same process for the rear? Thank you
great vid but i will be using NEW nuts not the old ones for peace of mind
Hi, iv read you have to use a a torque wrench to tighten it a certain amount? What wrench do i need for a zafira b 2011? Theres 1/2 and 1/4 and iv not a clue.
Torque wrench for the drop links i mean*
Great presentaion. Thank you very much.
Fantastic video very detailed and informative. Thank you.
Never heard of that but thanks for the tip..
Hi, great video, clear and easy to follow. My 2004 meriva has just failed its mot on both front anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust covers being excessively damaged. Would it be just the rubber part at the bottom end of the replacement component in your video that I need to replace? Cheers
A new pair of droplinks cost about £15 from eBay so its not worth messing about replacing the dust covers
was gonna say, you can just turn the wheels no need to jack it up!
my anti sway bar nuts on my 05 plate sxi + are so rusted on both n/s and o/s the spanner is just damaging them even more, they wont turn even after wd40..any help please well appreciated..had to return the drop links to the motor factors lol for a refund
you'll either need to use an angle grinder or hacksaw to remove the nuts and then buy those drop links again with new nuts :-)
You cannot use pullers to open them because they do not fit
thats great thank u very much for ur help
ha wish i had seen this vid earlier i just paid a local garage £60 to fit one, it looks piss easy
This is by a mile the best fucking video for a DIY car job I've ever seen the attention to editing and camera work, top notch
Did this after just not having the time to get round to it before. Wheel nuts where obviously impact driven on by arse holes in garage, had to use massive steel bar for leverage. Proper helpful video got the part for €20 and fitted myself saving about €80 that I don't fucking have at the minute 😂
Goodness EVERYONE stay away from that jack ! It comes with BMW Mercedes and vw cars. Had to use one in a emergency , and the top bit slipped and the car nearly fell on the floor. Use scissor jack or hydraulic ! Not this pile of wank !
Thank you for the nice and detailed video.
This should be a quick and simple job, but if you've never done it before this excellent and clear vid, nicely narrated, should give you the confidence to tackle it.
P.S. As an aside, NEVER go under a car, or put any part of yourself under it when it is supported by a jack only - they CAN fail.
Which doesn't even bear thinking about....!
my sway link bushing had worn off and it made clunking sound when I hit a bump... I had it changed in the car workshop... paid them for the job. but having watched this video made me wonder... I could DIY.. but I'm not confident enough though.
A local garage fitted these a few years back but the job needs done again already, I don't think they put any grease under the rubber cups. Thanks to your very clear video I feel confident enough to try it myself. Update - The drop links were OK - The rattling noise turned out to be the loose end of a broken coil spring!
James MacDonald I've just changed these again, they only lasted about 60k
***** Mine busted early too. (the plastic rod, not the ends!) Went for Delphi ones, but would prefer solid metal ones.
Should really use the axel stand for the car to settle on though as the weight of the car could deform or damage the tyre.
Also a torque wrench to tighten the nuts to the correct torque .
When i undo the loose wheel nuts i use a 17mm socket connected to a small extension to spin them off quickly instead of the brace which runs the risk of the brace flying off and scratching the alloy..
Good video though straight to the point no faffing about.
Your video helped me a lot thanks, the only difference I had on my 2014 Mokka, was the old links were 18mm nut with a torx star centre, and the replacements were 19mm bolt with allen key centre :)
Hi
Do you know what would be the Sway Bar link torque? top and the bottom ? in Nm? I am using Norbar 13047 Torque Wrench
Thanks
Thanks for the great video got to do mine on my vectra c many thanks!!!!
Clearly nothing wrong with the first one.
I would try using a small drill to remove the nut. Keep drilling small holes along the nut and use a metal chisel to split the nut off the thread. Other comments have used an angle grinder
I've just had the offside sway bar link replaced today after a month of back and forth to garages to figure out what the creaking/knocking noise was. Went to one particular garage and they got it on the first check! Car is lovely and quiet now 😀 it's cool to see what the part looks like so thanks for your video! It's very well done!!
Your video is half full of information
Drop link uet he calls it a track rod end
thanks for this video - I've been hearing this in my car and been trying to figure out what it is! Hopefully this is the cause so I can finally fix it!
that noise was the roll bar bushing ,mate.
@@Jozavenue - Yep, that's for sure. He got it totally wrong. No wonder his comments saying he had to change the drop links several times... Throwing money and sweat into the wrong parts! That's when the "magic" of a minimally decent diagnostic comes to mind
nice one mate, well explained....
Excellent video, this is a perfect example of how a diy video should be done properly. Also is this the same as replacing anti roll bar drop link's for a volvo xc90 d5 2004 car?
Very helpful video. I just changed mine on Skoda Fabia - without removing wheel! . It took me 20 mins. Thank you
Nice one, I've not seen a Skoda setup but I guess its about the same...
***** Yes, It is the same
How many miles have they done? not exactly a old car?
Nice video cheers ! Can you possibly do one on replacing cv joints vauxhall meriva or vauxhall with similar set up ?
Hi, what about Zafira? where do you change the Sway Bar Bushes for the stabiliser link? Thanks!
Just done them on my citroen picasso today 13.99 both sides hardest part is tacking the old ones off my garage wanted £50+
Ps ( this job is same as citroen)
Right got ya, bugger I never thought about that, funny both going at the same time,
My car ( zafira mk2 ) just had major service and MOT last Wednesday brought car home and parked it till yesterday drove to Scunthorpe and drop link knocking like a bugger going there, so much for a full service and MOT they check my car properly didn't they,
Doing drop links on Monday then back to service station for a few words.
Those pliers look like wire strippers to me.
when the drop link ball joint has worn you'll hear a very annoying knocking sound which quickly gets louder the more miles you drive..
I'm not sure to be honest, I've never looked at the rear suspension of a Vectra, try laying on the floor and have a look, it might have the same kind of drop links
I had the rear ones replaced in mine last year but the front ones are due at the next warrant...Im sure I can replace them myself so easy...Thanks
