Seeing Joel Haver support this video is so awesome. Thanks for making this Razbuten I really enjoyed listening to your introspection :) please more videos that break the mold!
I keep noticing how creators talk about The Algorithm much the same way one might talk about an eldritch god they don't know how to please but upon whom their fate depends, and I feel more concerned each time.
3 роки тому+43
Yeah, it's the same way people talk about The Market.
That is pretty much how Gods are formed in people's head, yes. From thunderstorm, volcano eruptions, and earthquakes, to wealth, health and the Unknown.
As someone who also has an audience, I can vouch to the endless anxiety, second guessing, and scrapped projects for any number of reasons. I hope everyone who can’t directly relate realizes just how spot on this video is.
I started watching your stuff just for the funny darksouls PvP and I feel like most of us who stuck around your channel would very much like to see what direction you end up taking your channel, whether that is still a main fromsoft focus or not. Just wanted to drop this comment to say thanks for all the entertainment over the years.
I think even people that aren't content creators can easily become empathetic to his message, it takes a minute of thinking how they'd feel in his position and a lot of people that have uploaded a photo of themselves on social media might recall having similar feelings to what Raz is conveying, or maybe writing an essay in school and not receiving the reception you hoped for.
I think everyone has an audience, even if for most people it's just classmates, teachers, colleagues, bosses, and clients. Some of these give more concrete feedback than others, some of these give more wrong demands, and others still might just silently enjoy or ghost. But I can say for sure that I don't envy the ratio of silence and silly/harsh demands that someone with hundreds of thousands of eyes deals with.
Pine, I don't give a damn what kind of videos you put out. As long as you keep up your You Energy, you'll keep self-fulfilling the prophecy of your current success. Never forget that. Also your dumpster diving series has been a great side adventure until we can sink our teeth into Elden Ring, and the new Age of Content can begin again. I get that everybody has meticulously gnawed at the Dark Souls bone, there's no meat left on it, so good on you for fattening up the next generation of livestock.
This Thing I Have Created Will Not Be Loved By Everyone And That's Okay. Something I have to force myself to think about - working for others, working for ourselves. Keep at it Raz. You're doing awesome.
I think it was Stephen King that wrote for just his wife. Whenever he had to decide if something should be included or not, he’d think about whether his wife would like it, and use that as a guide. I wonder if that mindset helps. If I draw or write or record anything I tend to think of the Void. This shapeless infinite thing just behind my desk that’ll suck in everything that I let go. And it doesn’t like anything, it doesn’t hate anything, it just consumes. Somehow that helps me let go a bit easier, and not worry too much if it was time well spent. I don’t have to stare at a finished drawing for days anymore, wondering whether I should delete it or post it or just let it be. Now granted, I get five likes on anything I do on a good day, but that pressure to deliver for my audience was still painfully there. I think that’s there for everyone nowadays. (Half of Bo Burnham’s stuff is about exactly that feeling)
This reminds me of a comedian once who claimed he liked to stay on a topic making jokes until like 1 person laughs, and that joke was just for them, and then he moves on. I feel like it's ok (great even?) for creators to cater to the kind of creations THEY want to make, or to a minority of their audience, and sometimes the rest of the room will even laugh along with the 2 people actually in on the joke because it's funny all over again how specific or personal it is. Certainly, we can all entertain a tangent once in a while.
Chiming in with all the other creators in this comment section: we've all been there, one way or another. We're all eternally blessed, no doubt, but this undeniably *is* a rather weird fucking place we've found ourselves. And as someone that usually lurks - yeah, I do like your take on video games! You and GMTK are my two favorites of the genre. Thanks for the previous video of game recommendations by the way - my wife (who usually doesn't play games) adored Yoku's Island Express, and I put 50 happy hours into CrossCode before... giving up :)
This majorly resonates with me. There's an infinite struggle of scrambling for unique topics, striking something you're excited about, only to realize you can't stretch the discussion more than a few minutes, and becoming discouraged from even bothering to try and salvage it into a bigger idea. Worse yet is the destructive self-criticism of feeling like reviews, breakdowns, essentially any attempt to analyze existing media feels like a vapid supplement for original thought-provoking topics or compilations. It's so easy to get a backlog of 20 ideas and hate every single one just because it's "something nobody needs to hear about", it's "something someone else did faster than me", or just "something nowhere as ambitious as I want to be". I hope you can find a creative routine/schedule that fufills your drive and keeps you busy, lest you fall into the seductive pitfall of being your own biggest critic, dismissing potentially meaningful coverage of subjects as unworthy of the effort.
It's incredibly depressing that I'm not surprised to see so many of my favorite creators of all time in these comments (yes I'm talking about you, mister). I think when people say "I would listen to you talk about anything!" it means a lot more than that. It means that you - both as a talent, and a person - cannot "fuck up" in the way you're worried you will. It means it's impossible to lose everything with a video, a string of videos even. It means it's impossible to make something that the _majority_ of your subscribers would dislike, because it's you. You got where you are because you do what you love, you cannot lose what you've gained doing what you love, even if it's really very different - your love and passion will always _feel_ like your love and passion: just look a Joji. Think about it this way: there will always be preference, but good food is good food. A master chef will never make a bad meal, and the meals they love making will _always_ taste the best. Make it earnest, do what you love, we all know you won't allow anything but the best you have to offer. Even if you're not super proud of something, we'll be proud of it - you're already too good at what you do to do a bad job, and nothing you try will ever turn out _actually_ bad if you're excited about it, even if it might not meet your own expectations. That's what that means
Personally, I would love to see combination videos like "Top 5 videos I never made" that are just short ideas from different games/genres/subjects that don't necessarily have to be connected. Like the Graybles in Adventure Time, or Zeltik's mini-theories, or anything like that. I would have thoroughly enjoyed each of the potential videos that you put in this one, so I encourage you to put them out even if it's just a short idea! A good take doesn't have to be a long take!
Ok.. I gotta admit that I was one of the assholes who commented negatively on your 2 animation videos (the FPS ones) I know you won't read this anyway but IDC I am sorry and I wish you a happy day
You see the comments from other creators, we all absolutely feel this. It's the nature of the game and the line we have to walk considering the platform the UA-cam Algorithm, and lets be honest, the viewers that inform that algorithm, create. Video games are wonderful, but boy, would I love to talk about sports. Would I love to talk about anime. Would I love to share a recipe. To have the freedom to, without harming my viewership, make videos on whatever I want whenever I want? I'd be drunk with power and creatively firing on all cylinders. For what it's worth, I've found a unique challenge in "relating" those weird topics into gaming. Connecting pro wrestling to gaming every Christmas is by far one of my favorite projects of the year and I think it's because I get to talk about something different but also because I get to flex that I *can* stay true to my channel's "roots" and yet still talk about something that excites me. Of course, easier said than done, but that's always given me a little bit of a loophole to hit those strange topics. Haven't finished the video yet, but Raz you should 100% do some sort of "creative dump" video on a regular basis where you stitch together smaller essays together like this. Somehow, I think they'd perform well :)
As a viewer I love when channels explore their other interests because its a reminder of how multifaceted everyone is. Like as someone both into gaming and survivor I got way too excited that he was talking about survivor because its unexpected and I feel a sense of "im not the only other gamer who also has this interest". Outside of that, some content creators I follow have branched out and I think at the end of the day I'm still watching for that person's personality abd what they uniquely bring to a topic.
A "creative dump" video seems like a good way to judge audience interest before actually creating a video on a topic. I mean, it's still only going to be about the few of us who comment on videos, but that's at least better that second guessing all by yourself.
Y'know one of my favorite videos on another channel actually finally explained to me why people like watching sports AND why Super Smash Bros is one of a very few games I can enjoy just spectating. It's the most I've ever enjoyed any content about sports and it helped open my eyes and build a bridge to relate to others I never knew I could. It seems in many cases that passion and care for a topic shines through expectations, so long as you can find a bridge of relevance to bring folks with you on the journey. That video invited me into a space I never understood and made me feel more at home there and in my own space. Who wouldn't appreciate a piece of media/content that can do that?
As someone who's never seen Survivor, to answer your question: I CARE ABOUT THIS! I love discovering excellence and learning about it, no matter if I was particularly invested or not before. YOU made it interesting.
This is honestly how I describe what like to watch to other people. I don't care what they talk about, I just love passion infused essay style videos. Whether that be about politics, personal stories, or a shitty media that I would never enjoy, I just love hearing what others have fallen in love with/relate to and why
Seriously though, the things that stand out about this channel are sincerity, insight, and *PASSION*; even if I found it because they're most often applied to games. +1 to those things being the most important, and the topic they relate to merely being the means to channel those skills.
Same. It's what I want from the channels I love. It's why I'm here. But I also get that not everyone feels like that, because I know I'm watching channels I love suffer because the creator is daring to be themselves and not everyone wants that.(Though other channels in eerily similar situations are thriving so...) But yeah, I see the fear is real.
Every time i got into the topic he was talking about he interrupted it saying i wouldn't care, time and time again gaining my attention over and over only to meet the same disappointing result. And i think there's a certain beauty to that.
Yeah, something I didn't go to in depth about (but allude to when talking about the algorithm) is that there are plenty of topics that I think people would be interested in watching, but YT doesn't give them much of a chance because they aren't pushed AND ALSO people are less likely to click on something that they don't recognize even if the contents of the video would be really interesting to them.
@@aaronwilliams8887 is it though? Or is it more that the UA-cam-algorithm makes the best out of a tough situation that comes from the fact that we are humans?
You've hit the nail on the head in so many areas: feeling trapped in a corner of content that feels safe, the pressure of your job and the algorithm stopping you from talking about things you're interested in (I've experienced this multiple times trying to talk about indie games), or just wondering if anyone cares or if anything you're talking about matters. And hey! I also stole my username from a piece of media I liked as a kid, so I think this whole UA-cam thing is a shared experience :)
I would like to apologize for my part in making the algorithm not like your videos on indie games. The only reason I haven't watched them, despite being recommended to do so multiple times, is that I am afraid I will feel bad for not having time and money to play them all. I doubt this information will be helpful to you in the future, so feel free to ignore it.
Hey, I made the celeste pie after learning its existence from your video about it, I failed miserably, it was delicious anyway Love your videos, pure joy.
I think for you and Raz, what works best for y’all is when y’all try a new idea, you guys make it into a mini series (You: “indie titles you never played” / Raz: “gaming for a non-gamer”). I may have subscribed just for those videos but it give me a chance to also look at content that comes after. I feel creators should embrace that “who would care about this” mindset (easier said than done) because it might A. Kickoff a new type of video people up liking or B. Give you a base video you can tweak for the next one if you still wanna try to make the new video stick.
Yakko, i haven't watched your videos for a long time, seems like i click on then wherever they appear yet youtube doesn't show them to me much anymore. I will have to manually search them for a week so that the algorithm stopped being a baka
This is literally the first video of yours I've ever seen, I didn't even know this channel existed until now and I think this video was great. Is it on brand? No clue. Is it hot garbage compared to your previous works? Fuck if I know. What I do know is that you are genuinely passionate about what you do, that's what stuck, that's what counts. Make the videos you want to make, period.
Hey Raz, you nailed it: "I made this mostly for myself, but you can watch it too." Please do this. Do not listen to viewers requests. We dont even know what we want. We only can grasp how we feel. And your content always made me feel in a way, that I wanted more. As I do now ;)
For what it's worth, I love your videos, and it's the style and presentation rather than the content that wins me over, although I can see from your view counts that content is extremely important to "the algorithm". I think this is true for most creators I enjoy. Dunkey just released a ridiculously hilarious video about Kanye's album using his own unique style, Girlfriend Reviews just did a review of LOTR that was just as good as their normal content, so it's definitely possible to go out of your comfort zone and still make a great video
I was honestly about to write a comment along the lines of, "Oh, so this was Bo Burnham's Inside but from Raz's perspective. Nice!" And at that very moment, you mentioned having watched Inside too many times. And yeah... I feel you.
First off, can I say this is so nicely edited? Audio mixing was top notch! Also, this is so relatable of course. There’s so much second guessing that goes into this job and it can get depressing and lonely after awhile. It’s affirming to hear other creator’s perspective on it!
Thank you for the kind words! Yeah, I spent a lot of time trying to capture nice soundscapes to contrast with the more highly edited parts. Also, I appreciate you for not being afraid to talk out about the ways in which UA-cam has affected your life (for better and worse). I remember you putting out a video a few years back that went in depth about your experience with YT, and it was really eye-opening on how hard this whole thing can be.
Clearly, I'm not the only person this video resonated with. UA-cam life is a text document full of ideas which are only good the moment you write them, and videos that feel less necessary the longer you work on them.
Rather than go on about how I’d watch your content just because it’s yours, I want to tell you why this video is probably my favorite from you so far. Your content tends to be very well reasoned, interesting, and relatable. It comes across as a smart guy just being passionate about stuff, and that’s fun to see. You’re not some top of the line comedian or musician or anything (unless?) but that’s part of what I enjoy. You’re just… talking about what you want to talk about. It’s very real, and it cuts out the superfluous bs that usually riddles UA-cam content. This video is no different. You’re being honest about your opinions about a topic that you care about. But this time it’s even more real, and even more humanizing. Thanks for taking risks like this, thanks for putting out good content. You rock man
Oyy it's good blood! Love ya mate Also I am sorry I am expecting a lot from you.. But it's your fault honestly It's not my fault that you make the best videos I have ever seen + a masterpiece of a document ( *cough* the Ocarina of Time video *cough* ) Ok but for real.. Don't push yourself a lot mate! We will wait as long as it means you will be ok :)
Everytime you cut off the beginning of a genuinely intriguing video , I got frustrated, then laughed, because that frustration is exactly what you were trying to get across, and I fell for it 5 separate times
Honesty, the reason I watch isn’t because of the content, rather the way you narrate and articulate yourself. Taking no sides and open to contradictions, it keeps me entertained no matter the topic.
Same. I could listen to Raz talk all day. But a large part of that is the passion he has for each topic. It's like listening to a chill, thoughtful podcast and I'm just along for the ride.
Hey man, I appreciate you and have your back. I know a lot of people, whether they do YT or not, have similar worries, so thanks for sharing your experience and opening the conversation.
I loved every micro video in here. I know this won’t change the struggle you go through, but I’d be willing to listen to just about anything you put out - a regular lurker
I seriously just put out a video like this a few days ago. It's comforting getting the reminder that all the complex insecurities, burnout, and suffocating decisions are pretty universal for other creators. Thanks for this. Love your stuff.
Thank you! Yeah, I've been watching a handful of your videos recently, and I was near the end of production on this when I saw you post that, and I was like "I'm not alone!!!"
@@razbuten Raz, I feel like I certainly don't comment enough on your videos, for which I do apologise, but I hope to make up for that in some small part here. There may be a tad bit of oversharing and I do hope I don't go too far in places where my awareness of things is shaky, but I need to find some way to convey how your content makes me feel. Since the start of 2020, the last year and a bit has been the most challenging time of my life, being stuck in a house with someone who has been growing increasingly harder to live with. Multiple times over, your videos keep a smile on my face and I cannot thank you enough for all the times where you helped me to get through the day. I've not seen Inside yet, but I've been thinking about it a lot, since CJ the X's video. In the same way as Schaffrillas, Scott The Woz and Jacob Geller, I am fascinated by the new takes on topics that you offer us to think over. I would love to see videos on Starkid, on Survivor and how people would have different ways of playing through a campaign of D'n'D. I'd even love to see more videos in this vein, combining grains of ideas together, as a means of highlighting a greater issue or topic. That said, I'd imagine that there's a whole host of variables to consider, in terms of the algorithm and audience, that I do not have proper awareness of. This is getting rather long at this point and I didn't set out with a proper conclusion in mind, so the ending may be a little messy, but I hope I can return a bit of the hope and happiness that your videos instilled in me, when I needed it most. I hope you are safe, with everything going on right now. Thank you for trusting us with this video.
As soon at your first trail off, I could've sworn this was reminiscent of inside. And I think this was a very good take on the "inspired by inside" genre. Bravo!
Yeess!! Oh god. It's too real... I think this video does such a lovely job of showing the other side. What creators struggle with on a day-to-day basis. But that we also feel the need to shelter and hide our struggles, out of fear of THAT being poorly received. I found myself relating to every little point made. I've been going WAY off what people know me for lately, and it's shown in the numbers. But I can't bring myself to make the videos I "should" make each and every week. Grateful + Terrified. That is the best possible way I can think to sum up the relationship we likely all have with our audience. It broke my brain when you included an ad break IN the video. Very well executed. A great gag, AND effective marketing! I love the idea that "Inside" unwrapped every creator/youtuber's brains - and forced us all to acknowledge that more complex, more insightful, and more creative videos are attainable. Thank you for helping raise the bar! But also F*** you for raising the bar as high s you have ;) Also. Survivor is great. Glad to hear from other fans who are still watching it!
The age old UA-camr curse of, "I want to do this, but can I do it well enough? Will people even care?" it's hard to deal with but I really do love your style of video, the concepts are always super interesting
Thank you. Yeah, especially while making this video, which had me running around parks filming various views with an actual camera (something I have very little experience with), I thought a lot about how I am kind of a professional amateur, and that frankly, a lot of people on UA-cam are. I think that is part of what makes this such an engaging platform. You see creators grow as the learn stuff and sometimes can even be a part of helping them grow. The downside for creators is that we don't know what we are actually doing a lot of the time, and are just trying are best to keep above water.
@@razbuten I loved the b roll way more than fancy shots you usually see, it actually made me notice and appreciate the little reflections in the water, the swaying leaves… love it
I was going to be “honest” and say that I probably wouldn’t watch just anything you upload, even though I don’t want that to be the case, I think the fact that I watched this whole video proves that I will actually watch your non-gaming videos, just because I enjoy your style.
It's crazy how different the perspective is depending on if you ask a creator versus a viewer. So many viewers have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Incredible video!!
This video is amazing. The editing, the openness, the general idea and style to this video are pulled off flawlessly, and instead of being like other creators and making a ten minute video complaining to a camera and saying they are bored you create a moving and intriguing piece. Keep at it man. You are truly one of the best.
As complex as the UA-cam algorithm or the internet audience can be, one thing is certain: when someone talks about something they love, it is captivating. People listen. Have confidence in your passion projects, Raz. They are what defines you.
not all the way through the video, but as a content creator this video hits. I have 100's of ideas as well, about less than 60-70% of all the files I made never hit the screen because it's never good enough, it'll alienate the audience, get 1/10th my views, it'll feel like a waste of everyone's time if it isn't fully baked, dramatic and hits. but alas not every video can be your highest standard, I don't have an answer yet but I realize my normal needs to be my best I muster right now and I shouldn't regret it later on.
I have fewer than 1 friend in the World. That's right. Everybody disses me for making bad videos. I think they are perfect though. Who is right? My dissers or me? Which side are you on, dear nick
In software we have a saying - There are two types of code: Code that will make everyone happy, and code that we ship anyway. Your sincerity is admirable, and it's what keeps me coming back. Thanks for the peek behind the curtain. You're never gonna make everyone happy. Keep shipping it anyway.
Tbh Razbuten, a big part of the charm of your videos come from 1. Your relaxing voice, and 2. Your passion on the subject. Hearing someone with a smooth voice talking passionately about something they love will always be engaging to me. The clips you put of Dragoon and Survivor, I was hooked on for a while. I can't say releasing those videos will be overtly successful for your channel, populator topics and content are still an issue I can't deny, but I know that I'd still watch it.
As someone with a different kind of audience, I get this feeling. I'm a teacher, and every school day I get up in front of students and hope my lesson doesn't suck. Like youtube, students can be wild and unpredictable, but they do lend meaning to what I do. I hope you can take solace in the fact that your videos make a lot of people happy, and in particular help me out to take a break after a long day.
As someone who's never watched a full episode of Survivor, I'd still watch you talk about it. Feel better man, the past few years have been hard and weird, the way you're feeling is totally understandable.
Thanks so much for making this video and being free to open up about your fears. Overcoming them is one of the most important things we can do in life. I really enjoy your vids and hope you keep making them.
I was genuinely interested in that Survivor tidbit. I remember watching it with my parents sometimes, but I never really understood any of its underlying subtleties.
The game has also changed a ton with the more recent seasons. The social/deception part of the game is far more present now, and it leads to some really intense and interesting moments.
I, unlike a few commenters below DON'T have an audience, i've never been in your position. I do wish to thank you for posting this & opening up about it. In your videos (including this one) you aid me in seeing, understanding, and learning new things from many view-points; And i just gotta thank you for that... i've now subscribed 2 u... (something i do rarely, i typically make private playlists and check up on you-tubers that way.)
I love Legend of Dragoon. I play through it fairly frequently, along with Phantasy Star 4. Edit: I definitely posted this before watching the whole thing
You know, I want to leave a comment saying "wow I was interested in everything you talked about" and "I'll always be here" and while they're both true, I think I get how that's both your point and not helpful. Not everyone is like me so not everyone will be interested in everything you talked about. Then again, if everybody was like me then it'd come with the expectation of changing things about and not sticking to anything that's safe. I honestly loved the way you broke down this video and used the topics to express how you were actually feeling and I really can't wait for more content, whatever that may be.
I don't usually comment on... well, anything, so I guess I am (or was) in that big, silent part of the audience, but this video did really speak to me, as it does to many others. It may be hard to guess what an audience is going to like and relate to, but as long as it's something taken from within yourself, people will relate to it.
Raz, dude, you're one of the best. you're one of the few creators that I feel like their uploads are some sort of blessing that god sends us. and i will definitely watch and enjoy every video you do not only because you have top tier videos, views, and opinions but because i love you as a person and that's special.
I just got introduced to this channel, watched a video about vibe checks in video games, and then watched myself get vibe checked by someone who vibe checked themselves through editing...? This is the most bizarre moment I've probably ever had watching a UA-cam video. I'm sticking around for more. Hearing you talk goes far beyond just video games, it just feels real.
This is such a specific problem, but I had exactly the same thing back when I made UA-cam videos. I respect your restraint in knowing when a video is or isn’t a bad idea.
This video reminds me a lot of a creator called " Super Eyepatch Wolf." He pretty much just talks about whatever is interesting to him at the time, no matter how niche the topic is
I have legitimately watched every single new video you've put out for the last several years. I never get tired of your videos. As long as you keep making them, I'll keep watching.
I've watched your videos before when the topic interested me or the thumbnail and title dragged me in. They've never disappointed but this video is the one the earned my subscription. Keep making what you are passionate about and that passion (and a healthy dose of sincerity) will make your videos great.
You should make a new series called, "Ya know what I love about gaming?" and just list off a bunch of your 2 minute ideas with no rhyme or reason as to how they connect other than sharing with the audience your passion.
I love this idea. I love just talking to people who are passionate in similar things that I am. It’s even better in video format because you get to say everything you like to say about something without being interrupted or the conversation moving forward.
Yeah, pretty sure you're just fishing for complimen- what? Said no one ever. Your introspection, sincerity, and humility are a breath of fresh air. Thanks dude.
hey Razbuten... as a pro u should know that a video with "suck" in title will get demonetized by yt (automatically). At least according to the everchanging list u can find when u google yt title demonetized i hope u read this to prevent further demonetization of ur videos
@@edvinbryntesson2028 i never made a statement about who is "more of a professional", so why are u bothering me with that kind of response? Also: people dont know everything. U dont know everything. I dont know everything. Razbuten does not, too. And im pretty sure i dont know what Razbuten knows and vice versa. So why is it relevant to ask the question who is "more of a professional" when i simply point out a fact that could be a liablity in Razbuten's livelyhood in good faith, which cant have any negative impact, either way, if he knows or doesnt know?
Great video. Hella relatable and genuine. Loved the structure of continually starting up new ideas, cutting them off, and continuing to elaborate on the central topic.
That fake mid roll was so perfect. I have had the ad-free version for so long I legit had to double check EVEN THOUGH I knew you made it and it was a bit. Well done. Also, the whole, how you deal with anxiety and stuff is so very helpful, or at least you just mentioning you have/struggle with it. I feel like I'm using UA-cam to help me grow up sooner (25 btw) but that whole "live in the moment" and stop waiting for parts of your life to be over to just start the next ones, that's stuff I needed to hear. (it was from other videos, like Vide Check and Uncharted 2 = Best game) Being able to work in valuable life lessons is so amazing, thank you!
"Who's gonna care about this?" Do not ask yourself that question. The number of videos I have watched and loved that were about a topic I am utterly uninterested in is staggering. Just make the video. I'll watch it.
He said in the video those comments don't change the fact that the overwhelming majority of people don't think like that. And he needs these people to make a living
Be yourself, that's what brings me back to your channel time & time again. Not only are you relatable, but you have your own style that stands out. You are Razbuten.
The thing that keeps me coming back to this channel is the complete sincerity I feel from it. All of your videos really feel like you're putting your heart into it and speaking honestly. Thank you for making videos like this :)
I’m probably one of those people that say “I’m happy watching your videos on basically any topic because of your careful and thoughtful process in making the videos “ you can tell how much thought you put into the videos and I’m so excited that Once Upon a Role is starting up again.
I literally don’t know anything about survivor but I was so hooked into your explanation and I was excited to hear about Sandra. Then I was sad because you stopped
I don't usually comment on videos but something almost immediately made me want to comment on this (even before the mention of people who don't comment). I found myself getting incredibly sucked in to those little video tidbits. As someone who's only exposure to Survivor has been that one Game Changer episode, I was incredibly interested in what you had to say on the topic and forgot that I was about to be pulled out of it. I was only able to pull myself out of your Starkid bit briefly before you ended it. I'm relatively new to your channel but I wanted to say that even if I subscribed for video game analysis, I still very much appreciated hearing your thoughts on other topics. I wish you were able to do these other ideas without fear, but I know that working in a creative field for a living means not always being able to express your creativity in the ways you want without worrying what people think. All this is to say I'm glad I found this channel and when I'm done binging videos, I'll be looking forward to what you put out next!
I really relate to everything you've said in this video. UA-cam is such a strange combination of creativity and turning human beings into numbers. I'm constantly overthinking every aspect of this platform like the reception, views, and comments. What about the people who didn't comment? What did they think of the video? And why does the one negative remark stick with me longer than ten positive ones? Stuff like that. I don't have any answers either, but it was insanely refreshing to hear someone else say all of it out loud. Thanks Raz.
Makes me wonder what all this positive reinforcement does when a single bad review will make you stall. A lot of experts say to never get the opinions of friends and family, they almost always give you praise. Luckily for me I'm an asshole and a failure in everything so I don't really care what people say.
Thanks for this video. And no, it doesn't suck. You guys that create material in this media have a mostly "mute" audience, the negative comments really hurt and the applause is basically written stuff on the screen and some numbers, under a pressure to just keep growing your channel and audience. This media and the whole system we're in contributes for all of us being exhausted, depressive and anxious, and talking about how we feel is very, very important, even though not many people of your audience "care". But there are those who care, for whom you've been more than just someone who talks about games and that your material somehow helps them getting through the day. At least for me, your videos are really helping me getting through this whole pandemic isolation thing while living alone (to the point I'm basically addicted to videos like this). Even this video is something entertaining to me, because I can relate to what you're saying, and I bet lots of the viewers that don't comment also also relate to this. I wanted to have some advice to put here, but all I can think of is saying that you're enough, and that all of this you said is valid and worth sharing. You're very important to us. Take care and cheers from Brazil.
This was a brilliant way to express your struggles, I've hit the wall where my entire desktop is littered with tons of ideas on sticky notes, unfinished project files and terabytes of years old footage. I feel like I'm at the point where youtube has consumed my entire life and I have maybe at best 30 good minutes of videos to show for it. Its absolutely terrifying when you've created a mold for yourself that'll always be the safe option when making stuff, but this video was a beautiful step in letting all that out. Seeing all these content creators in the comments say similar feelings is reassuring to say the least, and I hope this video's reception helps push you foward. AND HOLY SHIT yes big love to Legend of Dragoon.
While I found you from and REALLY love your "person that doesn't play games" videos, I also enjoy your video essay style in general. You will never fully please everyone, including myself, but almost all of your "ideas" in this video are ones I probably would have watched as a whole video. You are great at what you do, keep doing it.
im the type of person that'll watch a video on just about anything if it happens to be a cool analysis written by someone with an interesting perspective. I've literally watched 2.5 hour analyses on niche games I knew in nothing but name beforehand just because hearing someone passionate infodump about it is so interesting to me. I'm usually a lurker but I just wanted to comment and say I'm the type of person that binges your videos just because of this. I could jump right into a video on who Legend of Dragoon deserves the spotlight, or the interesting psychology behind Survivor of all things because honestly that's the type of person I am and I suspect its the same with many of the people that watch you. Sometimes things may be a bit more niche, and maybe it doesn't result in the big numbers that well known titles pull in, but that just means youve hit the audience thats the most interested in what you have to say. i guess what i mean to say is keep being great and an individual and people will be drawn to you. good luck with all this balance in the future
I’m definitely in the camp that just loves hearing your take on things, no matter what topic it may be. I’m down for a Survivor video, give it to me. I understand your concern, though. Content creation is such a tough thing because it seems you constantly have to be aware of not only your own audience’s interests, but the almighty algorithm’s interests as well. I also love some of the early comments about Dragoon which were clearly posted within the first few minutes lol.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a concept resonate with so many people. And so many verified accounts in a comment section. Keep at it Raz, a lot of us will continue to watch whatever you put out!
Hey Raz, Thanks for putting yourself out there. I know it wasn't easy. I appreciate your insight. I hope all us crazy audience and them cooky algorithms keep your channel and job going for a good long while so you can enjoy what you do, and might I say... are good at.
I'm reminded of Joel Haver expressing his initial concern of making rotoscope animation skits occasionally instead of his normal life action stuff. In the end, it worked out for him, but I see the same hesitation in the moment. All the same, the uncertainty is real.
The thing is, I would have loved to see a video about Survivor, or Legend of Dragoon, or anything else. It's like when you end up down a wikipedia rabbit hole, as long as the topic is well put together (and you personally do a good job at that), then I'm happy to hear that position and insight.
Sometimes I cannot understand my friends and family's struggles, and when that happens what I understand is that staying with them is something I can do to help and show support. And that's what I'll do for you. You're awesome man, keep up the good work
I recently found your channel here in 2023 and have been trying to play catch up. I want you to know it is still relevant and impactful, as a small creator who stepped away from it all, you put into cohesive words what I was feeling but had a hard time articulating to myself. Thank you for this.
As someone who is just starting out as "content creator" and is in a creative rut at the moment this was something that I needed to hear from someone who has been making great content for a long time Thanks for the insight, this hit the nail on so many things that I can relate to
i was so confused by the fake yt ad i hadn't seen one in years and i thought reality was breaking down for a second. On a more serious note, thank you for sharing this video. it was a bit heavy to watch, but in the end i am always glad to hear others talk about their insecurities and doubts, because it really helps to give my own thoughts a second perspective, to sort them and interpret my feelings and desires.
Seriously though, The Legend of Dragoon did deserve better...and yeah, okay, I will consider actually making a video on Survivor.
hello. nice unique topic raz!
How you gonna take first comment before uploading? That's just scummy smh... But congrats on first comment anyway :)

Oh look it's the awkward guy that makes funny videos, hi awkward guy, I'm awkward too...
I keep noticing how creators talk about The Algorithm much the same way one might talk about an eldritch god they don't know how to please but upon whom their fate depends, and I feel more concerned each time.
Yeah, it's the same way people talk about The Market.
To be honest, it's not a bad analogy. I mean, consider this: the only people who know how it works are absolute lunatics. :P
That is painfully accurate.
@@Reishadowen afaik no one truly knows how it works

Oh snap all my favorite creators are here
I think it was Stephen King that wrote for just his wife.
Certainly, we can all entertain a tangent once in a while.
woah i know you
no way it's you XD
Chiming in with all the other creators in this comment section: we've all been there, one way or another. We're all eternally blessed, no doubt, but this undeniably *is* a rather weird fucking place we've found ourselves.
And as someone that usually lurks - yeah, I do like your take on video games! You and GMTK are my two favorites of the genre. Thanks for the previous video of game recommendations by the way - my wife (who usually doesn't play games) adored Yoku's Island Express, and I put 50 happy hours into CrossCode before... giving up :)

Did you feel frustrated too when he cut to return to the main topic ? XD
We do.
Legit got really frustrated
Just got blue balled 😥
True
Very happy to see you hear man, love the vids 👍👍👍
What the eff, my man? Your videos are superbly interesting, I love your delivery!
Thank you for this

I am sorry and I wish you a happy day
Hello funny man, I really like your videos.
Cardboards are funny.
Thank you Noodle, for all of your videos. I'm loving Pikuniku.
Hi noodle. Large enjoyer of your uploads
:D agree, i would love to see others topics weirdly merging with gaming. but its hard nonetheless i hope you guys good luck :D
Who wouldn't appreciate a piece of media/content that can do that?
that's why i really like when creators have a second channel with no schedule or purpose but to share things like recipes and shows and random rants
As someone who's never seen Survivor, to answer your question: I CARE ABOUT THIS! I love discovering excellence and learning about it, no matter if I was particularly invested or not before. YOU made it interesting.
Also, you have some of the highest Like to View ratios I've ever seen.
I really liked hearing you be unironically be passionate about things and love
This is honestly how I describe what like to watch to other people. I don't care what they talk about, I just love passion infused essay style videos. Whether that be about politics, personal stories, or a shitty media that I would never enjoy, I just love hearing what others have fallen in love with/relate to and why
I completely agree
@@razbuten Truth. the UA-cam system is massively flawed.

Raz: struggling with his own motivations and sense of self-identity as a creator
The screen: G R A S S
Hey, I made the celeste pie after learning its existence from your video about it,
I failed miserably, it was delicious anyway
Love your videos, pure joy.
Well your name is better than mine, which is my surnames backwards.

We love you hbomb. Great to see you here! I love when my favourite creators follow each other.
I'm pretty sure people will watch anything you put out. Your channel is such a melting pot of topics and i think we're all used to it by now.
Gravity's a lie so is the sky fear our all seeing all knowing eyes
This is literally the first video of yours I've ever seen, I didn't even know this channel existed until now and I think this video was great. Is it on brand? No clue. Is it hot garbage compared to your previous works? Fuck if I know. What I do know is that you are genuinely passionate about what you do, that's what stuck, that's what counts. Make the videos you want to make, period.
Hey Raz, you nailed it:
"I made this mostly for myself, but you can watch it too."
Please do this. Do not listen to viewers requests. We dont even know what we want. We only can grasp how we feel. And your content always made me feel in a way, that I wanted more. As I do now ;)
I feel like my favorite youtubers follow that philosophy too, and it's great seeing them seem more relaxed and confident after choosing to adopt it.
It is impossible to express how much I relate to this video.
KingK don't worry you have tricked me into watching many things I would not have. Always love seeing a video drop.

Dude, your videos are awesome. I've been watching for years. You rock. Keep it up man.
I was honestly about to write a comment along the lines of, "Oh, so this was Bo Burnham's Inside but from Raz's perspective. Nice!"
And at that very moment, you mentioned having watched Inside too many times. And yeah...
I remember you putting out a video a few years back that went in depth about your experience with YT, and it was really eye-opening on how hard this whole thing can be.
wouah i know you
Stop Skeletons From Fighting! You rock man! I watch all your stuff!
You rock man
This feels like a really important video. I relate completely with this and the constant to-and-fro between courage and anxiety.

Yeess!!
But also F*** you for raising the bar as high s you have ;)
Also. Survivor is great. Glad to hear from other fans who are still watching it!
eyyy Graeme! :D
@@razbuten I loved the b roll way more than fancy shots you usually see, it actually made me notice and appreciate the little reflections in the water, the swaying leaves… love it
Then there's Brian David Gilbert levels of 'fuck it, I'm doing it first and we'll find out later!'
I loved this. I don't comment much on videos. But this on made me get off my butt and type. You are awesome. Keep up the good work
I was going to be “honest” and say that I probably wouldn’t watch just anything you upload, even though I don’t want that to be the case, I think the fact that I watched this whole video proves that I will actually watch your non-gaming videos, just because I enjoy your style.
It's crazy how different the perspective is depending on if you ask a creator versus a viewer. So many viewers have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Incredible video!!
Good luck man.. I am sorry for all the hate you get
I hope it doesn't affect you that much..
Have a nice day and keep on making bangers :)
Viewers are clueless and stupid :(
This video is amazing.
Leaving this video thinking two things:
1. You are a top tier video maker and thought haver
2. I’d really love to see a full survivor video.
Totaly supporting the survivor vid
yes to both
Same
completely agree
fr tho the survivor video slapped
I found Twisted because of the clip you included and I fell madly in love.
Thank you.
not all the way through the video, but as a content creator this video hits.
You have my condolences for being in New Jersey; it's a fate no one should have to endure.
As someone from a country where Survivor isn't on air and thus someone who hasn't even heard of Survivor before, I'd still watch him talk about it.
Thanks so much for making this video and being free to open up about your fears. Overcoming them is one of the most important things we can do in life. I really enjoy your vids and hope you keep making them.
Raz: Who's gonna care about this?
Me: Raises hand
Raising my hand too
@@NegativeEdge64
Raises my hand as well.
I was getting deep into that I was like where's the rest
I know I'm more than a year late. From one human being to another, I'm glad you made this for yourself. I'm proud of you. And thank you
God I knew this was going to hurt just from the title.
I try my best
@@razbuten Keep trying, and don't give up. We all love and deeply respect your input on hell pretty much anything.
Oh hey there Keith
@@razbuten it was an amazing video do not let this comment make you think otherwise I loved it
I don't usually comment on... well, anything, so I guess I am (or was) in that big, silent part of the audience, but this video did really speak to me, as it does to many others.
This was fantastic, if not terrifyingly relatable!
This is such a specific problem, but I had exactly the same thing back when I made UA-cam videos. I respect your restraint in knowing when a video is or isn’t a bad idea.
“I hope this video doesn’t suck”
*proceeds to make an interesting and insightful video about the struggles of being a content creator
This video reminds me a lot of a creator called "
Super Eyepatch Wolf." He pretty much just talks about whatever is interesting to him at the time, no matter how niche the topic is
John/Eyepatch is in my top 3 creators on the platform and I love him in large part for this reason.
Yeah, I've seen a few of those! Not subbed, but good content, good enough I recalled the brand at least!
I absolutely love their content especially the wrestling related
I have legitimately watched every single new video you've put out for the last several years. I never get tired of your videos. As long as you keep making them, I'll keep watching.
Sometimes art isn't for the public, it can exist solely for the maker to appreciate.
Just gonna say: I’d 100% be down to hear you talk about stuff outside of games. I actually would love to watch the rest of that Starkid video.
I would definitely watch that!
I love this idea. I love just talking to people who are passionate in similar things that I am. It’s even better in video format because you get to say everything you like to say about something without being interrupted or the conversation moving forward.
replying to boost this comment, this is a great idea!
I was going to say something just like this.
That, that's just an amazing idea
YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP
Yeah, pretty sure you're just fishing for complimen- what? Said no one ever. Your introspection, sincerity, and humility are a breath of fresh air. Thanks dude.
This felt like "The Beginner's Guide: UA-cam". And no, it didn't suck.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one. Though I guess I commented before going feel enough to see this one. Lol
Such a good game!
hey Razbuten... as a pro u should know that a video with "suck" in title will get demonetized by yt (automatically). At least according to the everchanging list u can find when u google yt title demonetized
i hope u read this to prevent further demonetization of ur videos
@@shadesmarerik4112 I'm pretty sure the dude who has this as his job is more of a professional at this than you?
(it was from other videos, like Vide Check and Uncharted 2 = Best game)
Being able to work in valuable life lessons is so amazing, thank you!
"American Vandal is the best cancelled show" when?

"Who's gonna care about this?" Do not ask yourself that question. The number of videos I have watched and loved that were about a topic I am utterly uninterested in is staggering. Just make the video. I'll watch it.
hard same
He said in the video those comments don't change the fact that the overwhelming majority of people don't think like that.
Wow this was surprisingly powerful and vulnerable and not what I expected when I first clicked. Thank you for putting this out there, you've got this!
I’m probably one of those people that say “I’m happy watching your videos on basically any topic because of your careful and thoughtful process in making the videos “ you can tell how much thought you put into the videos and I’m so excited that Once Upon a Role is starting up again.
HOLY SHIT I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH. Always in awe of your creativity and uhhh this was way too relatable HELP
Nice seeing you here! Love your videos
I literally don’t know anything about survivor but I was so hooked into your explanation and I was excited to hear about Sandra. Then I was sad because you stopped
"Who's gonna care about this?"
I care 😢♥️
"There are some films you do for your craft, and some you do for a paycheck."

Yo I thought your channel was verified but I guess it isn't
Thank you for making this, it's always nice to see what's going on with the mindset of the creator behind the videos
I'm reminded of Joel Haver expressing his initial concern of making rotoscope animation skits occasionally instead of his normal life action stuff. In the end, it worked out for him, but I see the same hesitation in the moment. All the same, the uncertainty is real.
Legit have tears from this video. Thank you for voicing so many of the emotions I have almost every day when I create.
As someone who is just starting out as "content creator" and is in a creative rut at the moment this was something that I needed to hear from someone who has been making great content for a long time
Thanks for the insight, this hit the nail on so many things that I can relate to

i was so confused by the fake yt ad i hadn't seen one in years and i thought reality was breaking down for a second. On a more serious note, thank you for sharing this video. it was a bit heavy to watch, but in the end i am always glad to hear others talk about their insecurities and doubts, because it really helps to give my own thoughts a second perspective, to sort them and interpret my feelings and desires.
Wow. The editing, pacing, cinematography and emotion on display here is simply incredible.
A truly touching piece, Raz. Thank you.
