- In this video, I will show you how to paint Cadians using the brand new Astra Militarum models! I really enjoyed building and painting this set and can't wait to get more on the desk to finish! I paint 5 models at once - this method for painting Cadians is relatively quick but there is so much detail, it pays to take your time and enjoy it!

The minis look excellent as a unit. Enough variety between them to avoid monotony, yet enough similarity to ensure homogeneity - quite an achievement. I also really liked the concise and simple guide to achieving different skin tones.
Cheers 👍🏻
it will always be the guard.
Never occurred to me to use contrast paint in conjunction with base paints! Ya learn something new every day! Thanks painting coach! I’ve got something new to try!!
Cheers
Cadia stands as long as a guardsman still draws breath
Cadians ain't the only thing standing! Nice job coach!
Cheers
Allways nice to see a painting coach vid pop when I'm painting a power sword 🤣👍
Amazing and easy to follow tutorial! Can't wait to get some of these!
Thanks!
These tutorails are the most feasible I have seen on the entire internet.
They set realistic expectations and He sticks to cans and brushes for the most part (if not always) which makes the methods accesible to all.
Thanks 👍🏻
The legend does it again!
Looking for a job atm, so not spending money on the hobby except for brushes & paints to work through the pile of shame. Joining the Patreon will be one of the first things I do once I’m hired!
Thanks! Good luck with the search!
Like seeing the completed figures together.
Cheers Tom
Bought the box today. Going to be following this tutorial. Seems really doable while including a good level of detail
Awesome! Yeah it should be!
How did it go?
Just waiting on this set coming from GW. You should open a painting acadamy! All best from up the road👍🏻🏴
Awesome Video!
Thanks!
Great guide
Thanks!
I got into this army bc I'm play warhammer 40k space marines. This was a relaxing video
Glad you enjoyed it!
These look fantastic! You got yourself a subscriber :) glad I found your channel.
I have a question; have you finished the entire box since this video? And, did you ever find yourself doing sub assembly painting or did you assemble all of them and then paint? I feel like some of these two handed poses would make getting the chest between the arms difficult
Thanks - I appreciate the sub! I haven't finished the box yet but I didn't bother sub assembling the troops - they are ok to get at.
I will sub-assemble the artillery although mainly to spray the gun dark and the troops light
@@ThePaintingCoach hey thanks for replying, and you very much deserve it!
That’s great news to hear about them not needing sub assembly. The artillery makes sense; I sub assembled a squad of intercessors for killteam and that was a bit much. This approach looks great and forgiving to mistakes as correcting them seems easy!
I'm looking to up my painting game and with my dark green colour scheme on my tanks this will fit perfectly. Thank you!
Awesome glad it helped!
@@ThePaintingCoach I put my money where my mouth us and bought the paints in the video that I didn't have already. Here goes!
Enjoy!
@@ThePaintingCoach I've painted 3 minis from the squad now. I've a bit of a shake in my hand but i'm doing alright. Have you an email address I can send pics into? I'd like to show you some of my work.
Yes sure - paintingcoach1@gmail.com
Fantastic work again I’ll definitely be using this tutorial, what green would you use for vehicles to tie into this scheme? Preferably a spray.Cheers
Hi Nathan - glad you liked it! Check out my video on how to paint tanks!

You The Goat !
Nice video coach
Thanks!
I'm not big on this box set but always love your techniques. Well done!
Cheers Kyle
I miss some of the long form videos. I'd play them while painting. A mixture of both styles would be great
Cheers am thinking about dropping some back in
Fantastic attention to detail a pleasure to watch, What a finish! Would you do a wash on these after or leave them as they are?
Personally I would leave them as they are
@@ThePaintingCoach perfect
0:02 ill like the colour on the face scarf what gray is that? because id like to make the fatigues a dark Grey to give my guard a grimdark feel to them. what colours would you recommend for something like that?
I think it is black templar contrast paint
Just getting into the hobby and picked up a bunch of Cadian Shock Troops. I've got some paints however I'm curious, as a beginner should I feel pressured to get all these paints and go into this much detail? Also could I always just re-prime my paint job and start over?
Hi Liam - welcome to the hobby!
Firstly don't ever feel pressured into getting anyting - work with what you have! A lot of my guides use different paints as it is perhaps the 'easiest' way to get consistency across an entire army. You can of course mix your own colours and this can help you learn as well
As for mistakes you can always paint over, or re prime the whole thing. There is also the potential to strip modles back to plain plasyic using suitable chemicals
Nice tutorial!
By the way, what brush size do you use?
Thanks - usually a size one - should be a link in the description
Do they look good with Resperator heads or does it not fit so we'll anymore?
The newer helmets should be ok - the older ones are chunkier. There are a couple of respirator heads in this kit, and of course loads in the kasrkin kit too
i really love your videos ur amazing. do you paint on comission?
Thank you - yes I do - you can contact me using the email address on the about me page or via instagram @thepaintingcoach
I will say I am very busy at the moment!
Hello! I can use instead of Zandri dust from Citadel, 28.013
White Vallejo bone? Would it be the same? Thank you!
Should be ok
Hey There I had a question, I noticed that at the beginning and with the Cadian Minis you seem to be Base coating I think with Zandri Dust Spray, But what are you Priming these minis with? I have Chaos Black spray but does that really work for this? could use a hand. Thank you so much.
Hi - I sprayed straight with Zandri Dust - no need for another primer underneath - the Zandri dust spray work fine for this :)
@@ThePaintingCoach Thank you so much for the Clarification and answer. Super kind of you sir. Just discovered your vids and Im watching them and absorbing. Trying to get back into painting guard after a very long hiatus.
Welcome back! I'm glad the videos are useful :)
Great tutorial! What is the recipe for the bases?
Cheers - it's astrogranite, washed with drakenhoff nightshade, then dry brushed with mechanicus grey and ulthuan grey
Instead of blue, what colors do you recommend for an orange plasma glow?
Magmadroth Flame over white
aint nobody got time for that!!! i need to paint 7x infantry squads 2 rogal dorns 2 sentinels and 2 artillery batteries....spray, brush and wash is the way!!!! but nice paint job, maybe my command squad will get some more love
Any good tips for camo patterns Coach ? Could we have a dedicated video 💥 ?
Did you see it?
@@ThePaintingCoach yes it was awesome ! I've put a like and a comment already 💥💥
Awesome 👍🏻
a bit late to the guide but what of the paint list is contrast and base paints?
I've added a C next to the contrast paints in the description
thanks@@ThePaintingCoach
Can you explain how you fixed the mistakes? I dont understand what you said there :/ "Something dust"? :) Sorry new to the hobby.
Welcome to the hobby! I possibly said Zandri Dust - have you got a time stamp? I'll go back and have a look 👍🏻
What color I need for the skin?
I just used different flesh contrast paints like darkoath flesh and guilliman flesh
ahh finally !!
:D
I only got them yesterday 🤣
@@ThePaintingCoach gw should send it to you two weeks ago !! :D
GW don't send me anything lol - I have to buy all my kits
@@ThePaintingCoach the more they should send faster :D , you make some of the best tutorials on YT
Thank you! Hopefully they will notice me!
How do you keep your brushes pointy?
Twist the brush into a point as you take it out of the paint
@@ThePaintingCoach holy cow I didn't think it was that simple! I thought you needed special oils, thank you!
No problem! And do the same when you wash it - then let it dry with the tip facing downwards
Maybe my brushes are garbage. They never hold a point like that, so my highlights are often uneven or too thick.
All my minis look..well, like they have paint on them. If that makes sense.
Cool video though, gave me a lot of ideas
Glad you enjoyed it! To keep a good tip on my brushes, I always twist and drag along the palette as i take it out of the paint - this restores the point. Also really important not to have too much paint on your brush 👍🏻
Never got contrast paints to work right. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.
What kind of problems are you having?
@@ThePaintingCoach I don't know it just looks terribly splotchy and completely unnatural. Two to three thin layers of paint and a wash just do a completely different job. And yes, I prime with Corax White or whatever the new one is called.
Different contrast paints work very differently - not helpful I know and a bit of a quandry within the same range!
Starting with the basics - make sure you shake them to the point your arm might fall off - or use a vortex mixer - so that there is no white residue visible.
If you are using them on marines, then the majority of contrast paints are not great for this, as they aren't good over large flat surfaces - some of the second wave are fine for thos however.
You can put the contrast on fairly thickly - just keep an eye to make sure it doesn't pool too badly - always good to practice on a piece of sprue or spare parts too
Hope that helps a little
@@ThePaintingCoach Do you think it might help to throw one or two mixing balls into the paint pot?
Yeah it will help 👍🏻
Long time subscriber here. I love your tutorials, but I have to say that I am not so keen on this new frenzied style of presentation where you talk so fast and fly through the commentary. It is distracting from watching and listening to you, which was always a highlight of your tutorials. Just my personal taste. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback Frank - I appreciate the support! Hopefully my more recent videos are a bit more balanced!
@@ThePaintingCoach So glad you took that the way it was intended and not offended.
Was enjoying the video till he mentioned the plasma weapons. Those weapons are NOT worth their point cost🤣
Everyone seems to love them 🤷🏼♂️
@@ThePaintingCoach tbh, you're better off taking the same amount of regular tempestor scions. If that's not enough, give them a hot shot volley gun.
I don’t know why but the blends seem real sloppy. People seem to be loving it though
