Great video. I think that Venus Extraganza was also an inspiration for Angel on Pose. When Angel was at Candy's funeral she said "It should have been me" indicating to me that she was portraying Venus. Venus was a model and was passing for female easily. Pose is a great show and you did a great job on this video. Kudos to you.
I actually got the chance to speak to creator Steven Canals last week when he did a Q&A session with my school and he said that Angel was his idea of Venus if she hadn't died.
Whenever I think about all the people we lost to HIV/AIDS in the 80's and 90's I get a lump in my throat and feel like I'm going to choke.. It wasn't a epidemic, it was a genocide until the straights started getting it and dying, then all of a sudden they got very concerned. If there is a hell May the people who stood by and did nothing burn for all time.
@@Titanicdork133 yes but the reason why the government decided not to do anything was specifically because the victims were predominantly gay people. the reagan administration actively prevented research into aids medication. had they not done that, hundreds of thousands of lives could have possibly been saved if they just started earlier. but because it affected mostly gay people, they didn't care.
I lived through the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. I attended the balls, witnessed the chaos, and made choices that kept me alive. Let’s be clear: it was not genocide. People had a choice to remain celibate or practice safe behavior to avoid infection. For many, living recklessly and engaging in unprotected sex was the primary reason they got infected. Yes, there were tragic cases-those who contracted it through blood transfusions or were victims of sexual assault-but those were exceptions, not the rule. The epidemic highlighted the consequences of personal decisions. Ignoring that reality doesn’t change it.
I feel like they didn’t know what to do with candy because until candy’s death I associated Angel with Venus as she was always at the piers and dreamed of having a housewife life which is what Angel was telling stan. Then they went a different way with Angel and candy took the rest of the Venus storyline.
To me, Angel is a love letter to Venus. In the end, she was able to marry a man and raise a child, something that Venus dreamed of. She was a representative of what could’ve been for Venus which is very bittersweet.
1:19 it still angers me to this day that Junior LeBeija is the only cast member from Paris is burning to not get a one on one interview. But has the most iconic lines from the movie! He is literally the narrator of the movie and only has one direct to camera moment and it’s flyby
I'm cis but have been doing research on paris is burning after watching pose venus and Dorian s stories really captivated me so much this part of lgbtq history is fascinating I feel like I have been educated which I am grateful for, in the past I have been ignorant about queer and trans people but I'm learning to be a better ally ❤️🤗😊💕
Please watch Life After Paris is Burning. It details everything that happened up to the point of filming and this time is directed by a person of color who paid the talent a fair wage. Paris is Burning is a great primer to introduce people into the ball scene and a snapshot of being a trans person of color during the AIDS crisis, but the behind the scenes tomfoolery that went down will really put things into perspective. Like the documentarian being a cis straight white woman with an all-white crew. Among other things.
I watched it when it came out on cable. I watched it 92 or 93 as a kid. I was entertained and enjoyed the different personality and the charming community
This is beautiful gay, and gay adjacent, history, culture and class! Learn children, learn! Don't be a weak link, be a force to be reckoned with, respected.
I'm not ready for this iconic show to end. I love everything about these stories and I worry so much that it will be a long time before we get to hear about them again.
Look up Sade Pendavis. That talent was completely unparalleled. Nicky was all of us in NYC and beyond for so many jaw-dropping performances. A true talent. As all are of us. NYC in the 90’s really was insane. I’m so many ways. Thank you for posting this on UA-cam. Stunnnnnzzzzzzz
OMG, thank you for this eye-opening his\herstory lesson! POSE is an amazing show and I can't wait for season 3. But just remember one thing: Elektra is not just a queen, she is THE EMPRESS of Ballroom and the VOICE of the marginalized...Her scene reading that clueless privilged white Hamptons girl is BEYOND LEGENDARY....LONG LIVE ELEKTRA !! XOXO from Tel Aviv...:)
Great video! I'm a cis woman but I've been so enamored with ballroom culture ever since I saw Paris is Burning in my early 20s. Like a lot of people I had reservations about Pose when I first heard about it, but it's such an amazing show and I'm so glad they've been able to introduce that culture and history to a whole new generation of people ❤️ This video was really informative and I can tell you really did your research, I learned a few new things from this so thank you! Also you have a lovely voice. Please keep making videos like this!
Candy’s story broke my heart. I’m a SW and one of my clients went to prison for murdering another worker at the same time season 1 came out so her story hit me on a personal level. It’s so heartbreaking that she never got to own the lip sync catogory and I do think her character was treated like a joke at times. Candy Furiousity you will always be famous 🖤
Also I love the detail that in “The Cocoon” you’ll notice Miss Orlando bears a striking resemblance to Dorian Corey as she’s teaching Electra to hide the body.
wow good point! So many hidden details I had absolutely no idea about until watching this video and reading these fascinating comments! Thank you @princessamani for the video!
I so loved this show. I was reluctant to watch it at first. However, this turned into my number one series of all. The struggles these people went through was admirable. I love each character and their pursuit in life and love. Beautifully done with class and that is what attracted me to this series. Xo
What an entertaining, educational, and thoroughly researched video! Thanks for putting it together and honoring the show’s inspirations. Donated, sending you peace and love from the U.S.
Angie Xtravaganza IS Blanca not Avis Pendhavis. Angel is a combination of Octavia St.Laurent but the sweetness & little-girl-lost manner & beauty was all Venus Xtravaganza. PERIOD. I was there. Knew half The Children in "Paris is Burning" & lived the life in the clubs with them in the mid 80s..It was EVERYTHING & "Pose" only captures bits of it. The reality can't be brought to the screen. It was a surreal world that existed in full view of everyone while at the same time being "Underground"in N.Y.C...R.I.P. to the original & now gentrified Pier in The Village where much of it all went down after dark with Music..Voguing..Drinking.Smoking.Cruising & Catfights between warring houses. Think : outdoor club for people who had no place to go at a time when the cops just let us be..Good times.
Thank you for the knowledge, much respect. The similarities I saw with Avis was the fact that she really pushed the education side of things which is similar to Blanca. But I agree, the main influence does seem to be Angie.
You are correct about Blanca, she is more Angie. While Avis was loving, and encouraged her children to live beyond the confines of the ballroom, she wasn't having the kids live in her house. Period.
Hahaha, yes, I used to work on W4th St btwn 6th & 7th Ave so you know what kinda trade passed back & forth on that block. Nearly all those kids had run thru the store trying to shoplift but they stopped when they realized I knew what's up. I howled at the part in PIB where the kid was breaking down Mopping 😂.
In addition to the condom over the house demonstration, the demonstration in the Holy Cross Cathedral was based on a real ACT UP demonstration there called Stop the Church.
I’m really not ready for this to be the last season I wish they would make more seasons we need more lgbt representation I don’t understand why they’d pull this show so fast I don’t like that
While watching the show I felt let down by Candy's storyline because they bashed her so much when even when she was doing well and then they built her up with Candy's Sweet Refrain but they only did it when they found out she was dead as tribute to someone they bullied
@@princessamani there were several moments throughout the series that were plot holes or poorly written. When Elektra was flipping tables in other people's houses for a few episodes only to tell I think it was Damon that he had to have respect. When Frederica said that her only regret was that another woman had her business destroyed she kept flip flopping between good and evil. I think it was to make them seem more kindhearted and less one dimensional but it was really messy and confusing.
Thank you posting this and I had most of them right except for two. I hate the fact that this is the last season of Pose, but it'll go down in television history as a groundbreaking show with a predominantly transgendered cast. As a gay man, transgendered men and women all around the world are brave; and I have much love and respect to you all ❤❤❤❤.
I agree! I hate that it's the last season too, but it will absolutely go down in history. It has helped me so much in my journey to finding and being myself. Much love
Thank you for making this video!! Its a shame that so many people don't know this rich history. I tear up every time I hear Venus Extravaganza's story. You're SO correct that this needs to be taught to LGBT+ people, especially, so they know where the history of all of this comes from. I hear so many non-Black young people saying "realness" & "shade" & its sad to think they prob think its from Rupaul's Drag Race. Even the words "the drag race" came from these times. Great job on this very important topic!👏🏻
I just finished the series last night, cried hysterically, then watched this and cried more. I love this show more knowing it was based on real beautiful humans ❤️ thank you for this teachable video!
I think Elektra was also based on Pepper Labeija. Also from Paris Is Burning. Ricky is definitely based on Freddie Pendavis, also from Paris Is Burning. Ricky and Damon relationship almost mirrored Freddie and his lover in the documentary.
It's really heartbreaking to see how many of our icons passed away from a battle with AIDS. It's also sad to see how no one has ever been charged with that murder, 150% because the police didn't care to find out. But on a brighter note, it's also very liberating to see where ballroom started to where it is now. By POC, for POC....we are a force to be reckoned with. And I also need to add that I wuz here for Crystal's friend in the background "don't you tell her she's showing her colors!!!" Lmaooo
Very interesting video! The first time I watched Pose was after it made the transition to Netflix. I immediately became a fan of the show and watched every episode available. I fell in love with so many of the characters, but especially Blanca. It is really cool to see who these characters were based on in the early ball scene. Though I am a straight cis woman, I participated in a similar ball culture in the early mid 80s with many of my wonderful drag friends who are no longer with us. Every time you mentioned a member of early ball culture dying of AIDS, it took me back to the deaths of my three closest friends in 1989, 1991 and 1993. Best of luck with your transition! 💓
Okay but I've never noticed these when watching but as soon as the video started I was piecing it together same time as you. I love that you've done this okay
New subscriber! Fantastic video! I remember going to the movies as a teenager to see Paris is burning. What an iconic film that was. It literally transcended peoples expectations and changed mainstream culture.
Awesome sauce, i had no idea that these were once base on real people. I love Pose and hate that it went off. I guess all good things must come to an end
Your voice is so relaxing 😭 and I LOVE THIS SHOW, from those of us not even in the LGBT community but appreciate the culture and the ART and the struggles that the movement brings. It’s a miracle this show exists, I hope this show gives people a deeper understanding of the LGBT and individual trans experiences as a whole.
Hey everyone, thank you for all of the support on this video. It means the world to me. More content will be coming soon. I also felt a need to say, that if you leave a comment gas lighting the dark skinned queer community about colorism, your comment will be automatically deleted. Love and Light and see you soon with a new video xxx
I never saw Candy or Elektra as agressive or messy I saw them as flawed, tortured people that are willing to grow Elektra was always a joy to see on screen, even when she was playing her part as a disney villain. But she was never actively malicious. You could tell from ep.1 that Blanca & Elektra still care for each other Candy to me was very sympathetic, getting laughed at numerous times. She was hard-working, dedicated to her goals and smart. Also always willing to help out her family like with the cocoon. All in all I love these characters so much
Thank you so much for telling our story. I was a little disappointed when I found out that another predominantly Black queer show would be taken off air. Your story telling keeps the legacies of these individuals alive. I'm holding you in the highest regard as you continue with your transition.
Venus Extravaganza was so much fun to be with. As small as she was she was a big riot to hang with. We had so many laughs together. I was heartbroken when I was told of her murder and how her little body was discovered. The whole House of Extravaganza was so saddened by her death. Her boyfriend at the time Rican, took it really bad. I ran into him shortly after her death happened one morning on my way to work. I believe it was January 1989, I could be wrong but I was happy to see him even though I can tell he was taking her passing very hard. We spoke for a couple of minutes I gave him a hug and some money and told him to stay strong. I ran into rican a few times during the years and he is doing much better thank god. So many have passed away from that era sad to say. They would be so happy to know they have not been forgotten and there names and faces are known world wide due to Paris is Burning and how the Ballroom scene has evolved world wide also. I miss them dearly and learned a lot from them. RIP. EXTRAVAGANZA Power forever!!!🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉
Hector X! I miss him! We used to run into each other every few years in the oddest of places, have a maaad kiki for a few minutes then spin off til the next time 4 yrs later lol. Beautiful, kind, brave, generous, wise. The last time I saw him, he told me Stay beautiful, stay moist 😢😅.
Very inspiring and well done. One thing that I have learned from this period in NYC is to love your self first - as you are. No matter what changes love comes from within and that work must be done regardless of what your situation is or isn't. But of course we all need some help every now and then. But self love is still a journey which is never ending. Love Peace and sooouull baby.
"You know, just stuff like that ... " in such a matter of fact tone, really shows how normal this was as if she kinda had to expect it! It hurts how this was their reality.
I'm going to start following you from now on, I learned a lot by seeing this and I'm amazed by the amount of history that the ballroom has that I still don't quite know
Thank you so much for taking the opportunity to educate, by using Paris is burning and “POSE” to highlight LGBTQIA figures struggles as well as their accomplishments. Although many of the mannerisms and idioms from black queer culture has made itself into mainstream, there tends to be a practice of not paying homage to the source; especially when it comes to ballroom as an inspiration. Thanks for acknowledging this!!!!!!!
I love this show so much and it’s bitter sweet to know it’s coming to its final season. Thank you for taking the time to give history, perspective and backstory of the real icons behind the characters everyone plays. I hope more shows come out and follow suit without the hints colorism✨
I just finished the series and I was balling in almost all of them! 😭🥺 It was such a wonderful, beautiful and eye opening series. I wish I was born during this time. I love the lgbtq community I would’ve been the only straight girl around a bunch of beautiful people back in the 80s and 90s. I’m so obsessed 😍 I wish this wasn’t the last season of pose
girl I feel you, I wasn't even a thought yet in my parents minds but I like to believe that If I were around this time. Then I would've been along for the ride with you as two straight girls hyping these queens up. Borrowing them my make up, helping them dodge trashy cheating boyfriends like Ricky and nursing those that fell victim to the virus.
Omg this is such a great video!!! I knew most of these connections but I watched for more that I didn’t. I am very impressed how well done this was put together and informative. I’m gonna show this to my straight cis female roommate before we start season 3 😥 hopefully tomorrow. I have had the opportunity to teach her so much about queer herstory... including introducing her to Paris Is Burning. Thank you sooo much for this video!!
There will never be another show like POSE, its tribute to ballroom culture, awareness of LGBTQ+ hate crimes and violence, and the AIDS epidemic from the 80s-90s were all executed with grace and left a statement.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏾🕊️🕊️
Straight people were the first to get it- it just thrived in the gay community
Yeah though I'm happy they spared Angel, I'm also sad that they had to take candy.
I think Angel was originally intended to share Venus's fate, but people loved her too much
To me, Angel is a love letter to Venus. In the end, she was able to marry a man and raise a child, something that Venus dreamed of. She was a representative of what could’ve been for Venus which is very bittersweet.
My heart breaks for Venus Xtravaganza so sad 💔😥
Me too :( xx
Not having closure for her loved ones by bringing her murder to justice
1:19 it still angers me to this day that Junior LeBeija is the only cast member from Paris is burning to not get a one on one interview. But has the most iconic lines from the movie! He is literally the narrator of the movie and only has one direct to camera moment and it’s flyby
I'm cis but have been doing research on paris is burning after watching pose venus and Dorian s stories really captivated me so much this part of lgbtq history is fascinating I feel like I have been educated which I am grateful for, in the past I have been ignorant about queer and trans people but I'm learning to be a better ally ❤️🤗😊💕
Aww thanks that's so kind. Glad you are enjoying learning such a rich history! 💞
Thank you for being an ally!!! ❤️❤️
Preach girl, preachhh.
Fun fact: I had been in Dorian's apartment several times and had no clue about the body in the closet until she passed. lol
Now I have to watch Paris is Burning and Pose
Haha you won't regret it xo
You have soooooooooo much to look forward to.😎
Mee to!
I watched it when it came out on cable. I watched it 92 or 93 as a kid. I was entertained and enjoyed the different personality and the charming community
Google how they also felt used by the producers and how they were misrepresented. It's on UA-cam.
This is beautiful gay, and gay adjacent, history, culture and class!
Learn children, learn!
Don't be a weak link, be a force to be reckoned with, respected.
Much love to you
It's so sad, we have so much more of a story to tell and it's ending this season. Why can't our story be told
I know I wish it want the final season too 💞
I don’t think it makes sense we need this representation we don’t have enough of it
@@ChocolateGumDrop89 create more
me too! x
A documentary on Hulu called pride also tells a lot of our story
I'm not ready for this iconic show to end. I love everything about these stories and I worry so much that it will be a long time before we get to hear about them again.
I agree. We're not ready. 😢😭♥️
Of course the legendary drag queen has a body in the closet lmao😂 How iconic
😂😂😂
Lol 😂
Look up Sade Pendavis. That talent was completely unparalleled. Nicky was all of us in NYC and beyond for so many jaw-dropping performances. A true talent. As all are of us. NYC in the 90’s really was insane. I’m so many ways. Thank you for posting this on UA-cam. Stunnnnnzzzzzzz
Thank you I will 💞
OMG, thank you for this eye-opening his\herstory lesson!
Such a legendary scene, thanks for watching
Your voice sounds like silk! Can’t wait to watch you blow up this is so well done
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for this lovely comment, I really appreciate it x
Candy’s story broke my heart. I’m a SW and one of my clients went to prison for murdering another worker at the same time season 1 came out so her story hit me on a personal level.
It’s so heartbreaking that she never got to own the lip sync catogory and I do think her character was treated like a joke at times.
Candy Furiousity you will always be famous 🖤
🤗🤗😘Sorry to hear you went through that. Lots of love x
@@princessamani thank you for making your videos ✨
Wow I always thought that Angel character was based off of Tracy Africa. She paved the way for a lot of girls, she crawled so they could walk!
I totally agree, Octavia too 💖
@@princessamani Absolutely! She was always one of my favorite face girls. She was so beautiful!
Thank you for watching, I just uploaded another video about Paris is Burning
I was surprised to learn that was based on actual situation I've only seen two seasons on Netflix will have to wait for third season.
Thank you so much for your donation Megan it means a lot. Thanks for watching too
Angie Xtravaganza IS Blanca not Avis Pendhavis.
Period.
Thanks for educating us
Hahaha, yes, I used to work on W4th St btwn 6th & 7th Ave so you know what kinda trade passed back & forth on that block.
I’m really not ready for this to be the last season I wish they would make more seasons we need more lgbt representation I don’t understand why they’d pull this show so fast I don’t like that
For real! We totally do 💞
Yes I was so sad :(
@@katnisseverpetty7171 me too 😕
Me three xo
Ryan Murphy said from the beginning there would only be 3 seasons. I'm praying for Pose spin offs.
While watching the show I felt let down by Candy's storyline because they bashed her so much when even when she was doing well and then they built her up with Candy's Sweet Refrain but they only did it when they found out she was dead as tribute to someone they bullied
Right!💖 Especially Pray
Much love
I heard theres a new season coming out on May of this yr
May 2nd!
This is kinda unrelated but you have such a nice calming voice
Thank you 😘
Thank you for making this video!!
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, really means a lot 💖💖
I wish Venus would get the justice she deserves.
I just finished the series last night, cried hysterically, then watched this and cried more. I love this show more knowing it was based on real beautiful humans ❤️ thank you for this teachable video!
Couldn't agree more!
watching PiB made me want to go back in time to protect Venus from whoever killed her
When I saw the scene with Aphrodite Xtravaganza- I literally GASPED.
Crystal saying “DONTTTTT GO” iconic Dominique embodied her so well!
Iconic!
There's a song from Blood Orange called Desirée, it has one of Venus' clips from PIB. Just beautiful.
I haven’t seen many POSE related videos; I’m so glad you’re talking about the phenomenal show POSE!
Thanks so much 💞
Man I wish I had a mother like Blanca
Blancas such a good mom right 🤗
@@princessamani yeah she's a beautiful woman. Inside and out
100% can’t wait for season 3
I 100% agree! I love that line too haha
your voice is so warm and gentle, it’s perfect for telling stories/history
Thank you
Very interesting video! 💓
Thank you so much, lots of love
Okay but I've never noticed these when watching but as soon as the video started I was piecing it together same time as you. I love that you've done this okay
New subscriber! Fantastic video! I remember going to the movies as a teenager to see Paris is burning. What an iconic film that was. It literally transcended peoples expectations and changed mainstream culture.
Thank you for subscribing!
I adore you I admire all of the strength the members of this movement have shown and heartbroken over what you all had to face

I tear up whenever I hear Venus’ story, it does truly break my heart.
Awesome sauce, i had no idea that these were once base on real people. I love Pose and hate that it went off. I guess all good things must come to an end
Thanks so much I’m still so mad it ended! Feel free to check out my other vids if you have the chance 💕💖
I'm so glad I lived though that era in NYC and witness it first hand
I hope at some point you could make a video or blog telling us about it!
Time for a UA-cam channel and a book.
Superb commentary on subject that took half a century to be told. Finally! I really liked your straight forward low key delivery; you should do more.
Thanks so much, new video coming soon
I would say cubby was inspired by the boy in blue @ 15:26
I never saw Candy or Elektra as agressive or messy
I saw them as flawed, tortured people that are willing to grow
Elektra was always a joy to see on screen, even when she was playing her part as a disney villain. But she was never actively malicious. You could tell from ep.1 that Blanca & Elektra still care for each other
Candy to me was very sympathetic, getting laughed at numerous times. She was hard-working, dedicated to her goals and smart. Also always willing to help out her family like with the cocoon.
All in all I love these characters so much
What an amazing, thorough, educational video! Having already learned so much from watching Pose, I'm so happy to have come across this 🖤
Thanks so much 💖
Thank you so much for telling our story. I was a little disappointed when I found out that another predominantly Black queer show would be taken off air. Your story telling keeps the legacies of these individuals alive. I'm holding you in the highest regard as you continue with your transition.
Thank you so much! I was disappointed too. Lots of love, A💖
I started watching Pose during the Pandemic shut down and bing watched the entire season it was Fabulous Bravo to all the cast well done.
Thank you for this beautiful comment Ricky. Lots of love 💖
Hector X! I miss him! We used to run into each other every few years in the oddest of places, have a maaad kiki for a few minutes then spin off til the next time 4 yrs later lol. Beautiful, kind, brave, generous, wise. The last time I saw him, he told me Stay beautiful, stay moist 😢😅.
So did this boyfriend KNOW that Venus was going to hotel rooms with random men ????? @@MarHar-k1d
I knew the bdsm client of elektras being in her closet seemed like a real story I had read.
Thanks for this video
Very inspiring and well done. One thing that I have learned from this period in NYC is to love your self first - as you are. No matter what changes love comes from within and that work must be done regardless of what your situation is or isn't. But of course we all need some help every now and then. But self love is still a journey which is never ending. Love Peace and sooouull baby.
Thanks so much for watching, and for your wisdom xo
Dorian is my favorite, there's just something about her that draws me in.
She’s brilliant and so much wisdom
Same. Her nonchalant wisdom.
"You know, just stuff like that ... " in such a matter of fact tone, really shows how normal this was as if she kinda had to expect it! It hurts how this was their reality.
I'm going to start following you from now on, I learned a lot by seeing this and I'm amazed by the amount of history that the ballroom has that I still don't quite know
This was so interesting....LOVE LOVE LOVE POSE
..watching it over and over. So cool to see those that inspired the characters I love

This post made my day..Those were the good ole days in NYC...Sadly most of my Friends have passed...
I wish I was born during this time. I love the lgbtq community I would’ve been the only straight girl around a bunch of beautiful people back in the 80s and 90s. I’m so obsessed 😍 I wish this wasn’t the last season of pose
There were a lot of straight people enjoying the ball at the time.
girl I feel you, I wasn't even a thought yet in my parents minds but I like to believe that If I were around this time.
Thanks so much for this! Lots of love
There will never be another show like POSE, its tribute to ballroom culture, awareness of LGBTQ+ hate crimes and violence, and the AIDS epidemic from the 80s-90s were all executed with grace and left a statement.
Off topic, but you have the most soothing, pleasant voice!
