That's some really awesome footage of the crabs stalking the pots. As for the gaffer, I'd suggest that in this day and age, people are more likely to sink their pots rather than use floats. You and I know that pot raiders are way too common nowadays.
You’re exactly right we both know that’s the only way to beat share farming. Still cool seeing how the crabs are interacting with the pots and it definitely shows that they’re not always interest in bait.
I learned many years ago that sadly, share farming was becoming commonplace. When I was growing up, fishing around the Pine, there was a code of conduct that everyone followed. But as years went on and crab prices went up, thieves started raiding pots. I wouldn't move out of line-of-sight of pots anywhere nowadays, unless it was in the middle of nowhere up north.
That’s a sad story mate. It’s a shame that’s what we’ve come too. I know if I’m out crabbing over a weekend I expect my pots to get checked. It’s not so bad if I’m working my pots and checking them pretty regularly I don’t worry too much.
I went there during the week Josh and camped over, lost one pot when a big boat motored past where i was camped and cut the rope, but i did a lot of walking on the flats just exploring and got a good photo of two crabs having a noughty in a hole😊. I did walk one pot in to a little drain at low tide but only got two slightly undersize crabs. Ended up with one crab for the trip from the other pots, good one just under one and a half kilos but really enjoyed walking the flats. Took your advice and got a pair of those boots you use which are great. Cheers.
That’s an awesome adventure you had mate. They’re an awesome all terrain shoe 😂 cracking good crab too, would’ve been chocka block full
I grew up in Woongoolba/Norwell in the 70’s and we used to fish this area all the time. Didn’t need pots we used to pull them up on lines all the time, great place and miss it so much
I live on the fraser coast the amount of share farming that goes on this time of year is insane i always try to hide my puts but it always amazes me how they find them
Tis the season hey. It’s sucks how you constantly have to try and out smart share farmers just to get a feed.
Theres ten minutes of my life ill never get back lol
Interesting video it shows you why sometimes an overnight soak is needed for the fussy ones!
Thanks mate. It definitely does shed some light on crab behaviour. I mean sometimes they’re just not after fish bait, they just want to filter feed or eat other shellfish instead.
Loved the Video mate, Good work Good work.👍
Cheers mate. 🤙 appreciate it
A few years back I was lucky enough to work at a place on the Brissie River that had a pretty decent water frontage & lots of mangroves so I didn't need to have a boat or wander around on mudbanks to catch a muddy, it was about one of the only good things about working at that place as they were pretty big dicks. Anyway I found a tin of pet food with a few holes punched in it with some normal bait sent the crabs mental & during the season I was getting 1 to 3 crabs a day from 2 pots I still have some photos but learned to send the pics out " after " I had eaten the crabs as I suddenly had a lot of short term friends, lol. P.S One notable accidental catch was a bloody big eel, kept me in bait for a week, them's were the days, love your videos, cheers. P.P.S No I won't tell you where I worked.
Hahaha awesome mate. Love the pps 😂 I’d never ask. It does sound like a pretty hectic spot, love an easy feed of crab 👌
We always sunk our pots. Tied to a 3litre milk bottle and sunk. Extension pole with a gaff problem solved. And we soaked the pots overnight! Apart from muddies, they'd be bream and flaties as well.
Crazy the lengths you’ve gotta go to get a crab at times hey. When I was a kid that’s how we used to do it. Worked a treat 👌
Awesome 👍 we love crabbing at Bribie ❤ newest Subscribers
So much fun chasing a feed of crabs. Thanks for the support guys! 🙏🏻
Poor bloke is probably sick of having his pots nicked. If he was up to no good i reckon he would have taken yours as well. When i was a youngster i used to sink the whole rope and use a grapple hook - never lost or had one nicked that way. Now i have a boat, i play by the rules. I don’t get the stupid rule for whole address on the tag thing though, the thieves get your address, you don’t have theirs.
Definitely could be something as innocent as that. He may even have a tag and rope to it, ya don’t have to use a float as long as the ID tag is above the high tide mark.
I think everyone is a bit sick of the thieves these days, this time of year especially.
Plenty of crab about mate although not a lot of keepers, heard of a few good rustys coming from the upper reachers of the local systems but 👌
It’s just that time of year hey. Just more crab to sort through, it’s always more rewarding when you do get them Rusty’s bucks though.
Here in the southeastern United States we primary go after blue crabs or stone crabs. You’re only allowed to keep one claw from the stone crabs and then they go back. Pot thieves are really bad here. In the 1970’s one fella kept stealing the crabs. A crusty old crabber caught him and shot two holes through the bottom of the guys boat. No one saw him stealing crabs again.
That’s such a cool story 😂👌 crazy but he definitely would’ve learnt his lesson.
@@BrisVegasFishing I’ve got a good friend in Meander Tasmania. One day I’ll get there to do some fishing.
Agree blue swimmers taste better. Muddys just have the bulk
And the claws are a feed in themselves.
November packed full massive in my area.
That’s awesome mate. Is it as busy for crabbing in your area?
Nice video mate👍
Thanks mate 🙏🏻
Bloody hard work. We did a lot better at the pin when I was younger but the commercial guys flogged the area and then the Jenny’s disappeared. ……
Definitely ain’t an easy run. Crab pots are far easier to work 😂 there’s just that excitement of coming across a big crab up shallow that gets me every time but.
Shanghaied into crabbing one night on the Fitzroy by an elderly local mate, I asked him to remind me how I could' tell the bucks from the jennys and he told me the jennys were the ones that don't turn red after y cook em. Lucky I took the torch down his back yard to the loaded pots by the river just after dark, they were covered in huge glistening bullants I mostly scraped off with a big stick and turfed into the drink.Only after I came back later with half a doz big bucks did he tell me there were crocs in the river.
That’s quite a story mate 😬😂 lucky ya didn’t run into any toothy mud geckos.
I was not aware that crabs are as active as you had shown them walking the bottom on video.
Crazy how much ya miss hey. Definitely gonna do this style of filming again, it’s so interesting to watch back.
Cool Ep Bloke
Thanks mate. Good to hear.
I've done many types of saltwater fishing.. Lobstring. clamming. Scalloping. but I haven't done any crabbing. I find it very interesting You have a question. you say some of the crabs were empty and I didn't understand what you meant.
Yeah they’ve got different grades of being full, which is something I go into more depth on some of my other videos. But if you’re interested they’re worth a watch. Thanks for the comment .
When they moult their old shell it takes time to flesh out.
Didn't think you could measure from tip of the spikes ...always been measuring from the inside of the notch forward of the spike
Maaate! Think of all those good muddies you’ve let go over the years. 🥲
True... But at least I don't have fisheries bending me over when they inspect the catch
once long ago if the month with an R they were usually full, wonder what has changed
I definitely remember that old fisherman’s saying. But I guess back in those days they were probably always full and they’d very rarely be empty. Hence the saying 🤷♂️
Few wingers as well.
Cool video!
Thank you 🤙
Interesting!!
Good to hear 👌
Hi very interesting. I have crabed that area for a long time and it is good to see life there, all though I would not eat the crabs from that area as all those houses in that area have septic tanks and the runoff goes into the under ground water system and runs out in the creeks. If you want to chase crabs go deep into the channels that is where the big ones are.😎
It seems like a pretty pristine sort of area for being in the south east corner of the state. I’d imagine up the creeks rivers it might be a bit different but 😅
I’m always searching for that mudzilla, be nice to find it up in the shallows one day 🤞
@donh4731 septic systems in OUR area is amazingly efficient these days. No groundwater problems or even bacteria. The flush from the mainland is worse. Jumpinpin cleans the water well on the Eastern side. Do you know how Jumpinpin was formed? It's not natural 😊
Leave smaller crabs in your pot after checking them. Drop in another bait. The fresh bait getting chewed as burly, plus the activity, BRINGS MORE CRABS.
Yeah copy. 🤔 I might have to give it a go next time. Check out the validity of it. Thanks for the comment 🤙
Old mate has sunk a pot, good on him, hope he got a crab
Yeah definitely looks that way.
The amount of other people steal my pots, I don't blame the guy to sank his pots.
@@lasserbream yep, I don’t actually see why it’s frowned upon
@@liamwindsor5854 They can get lost and end up as "ghost pots".
@@AwesomeFish12 so can pots with floats
Northern Queensland has the best mud crabs
Queensland as a whole has the best muddies 👊😂
It's not season yet. It's like the season will be during full moon time
How comes I have never seen anyone mudcrabbing use a nice set of tongs or grippers too make it a little safer handling those things ? Just curious
A pair of robust purpose built tongs would do the trick, I’d definitely buy a pair. But after being bitten a fair bit over the years it’s definitely nowhere near as painful or graphic as people make out. 😅 It gets the adrenaline going when you have to dive on em but.
Quá háy anh ỏi👍❤❤❤
Cheers bud. Glad you liked it 👌🤙
I recon old mate was legit aye
Regardless of my thoughts I didn’t want his rego to be all over the internet so had to blur it.
Grab ya self a hook to bring in ya rope lines before ya land in the drink son..! Love me some crab keep the content coming
Cheers lad 🤙😂 love me some crab too!
Someone's already been through there and got all the legal ones.
Haha yeah sadly someone else got a Christmas feed before me 😅
This was like watching a video of me crabbing lol. Always get a few but they are always green.
At least you throw them back though. Most boneheads take them home 🙄
It triggers me so much watching other people taking home empties. Especially when they lie to the camera and say it’s full 🤦♂️
My dad zip ties his shut and you know they have been stolen
Yeah it’s a good method to be able to tell hey. At times I’ve had my pots just slashed open, bit extreme and sad that it comes to that.
What do you mean by empty crab
So basically when they go through a shell change, they deplete all of their muscle when forming a new shell and obviously becoming bigger. This makes them empty and they then have to feed to gain all the muscle that they lost in the process. So generally when you get an empty crab they will be soft and lethargic.
I trust nobody out there. That stems from when I was a kid and watched adults clean out my dads pots.....Seen it a few times in 70 years....
That’s fair. Very sad story though mate. Hope you’ve got some good memories to out weigh the bad.
umm wouldnt it be safer to use a pole to hook the line ... it looks like your in gator area.
No gators in this part of the world 😅
Whats a Floater crab ?
Just a term for an empty crab 🦀
To test if your crabs are legal, they have to go red in boiling water
😂😂😂 sounds about right
Are you a telecom worker?
Hahaha no mate 😂 but I can see why you might think that 😏 you can actually buy that rope from Bunnings.
Could be a keeper pot
That guy had to of been illegal crabbing in my opinion
😈😈😈 i only like the claws ,, couldnt you just hold onto one claw till they let it go ? Then they could have one claw left for survival against preditors ... but he'll have blue balls for quite some time ? 😈😈😈😈😈
He knows he’s busted by you and pretending to try find his pot.
Hahahaha yeah that could be the case aye 😂 lucky he didn’t pinch the GoPro
I wound call it illegal crabing I call it crabbing. To many people nock pots off.
Definitely a few pot thieves about. I don’t really see anything wrong with it in this day and age.
Why don't you take the floaters home and feed them for a month
It’s something I’ve definitely thought about setting up for 😅 used to do it when I was a kid. The old man used to work on tuna long line boats and would keep em in the live bait tank.
You tube is screwed watching with all their dumb adds
I know right, every time I watch content I think the same thing😂 But at the same time it does subsidise how much it costs me to make these videos. Which I love doing.
Yeah mate I know its hard to watch the interuptions@@BrisVegasFishing
@@bullsnutsoz I feel that. Unfortunately the only answer is UA-cam premium. Which is an extra cost 🤦♂️
Thanks@@BrisVegasFishing
The title is clickbait!!! Nothing happened...
Did you watch all the way? 😂
You see to put your traps in a biological desert., no habitat for crab food.. Put traps near scrubs and brush and trees.. Big crabs are not in bare sand! Good luck..
Oink
Hey mate. My farts smell like roses 🌹
🤣🤣🤣
Check this out Bro u take the time to show in detail how the crab enter the pot and you kept 3 or 4 crab but # what's the purpose of catching them isn't to enjoy the tasty meat that only true crabers know how to clean and cook them and everyone usually has good recipes so without the catch clean and cook your videos are no different than anyone else's except those who take the time to film longer and show in detail, like you did with the crab entering the trap, again the goal is to catch a limit take them home and eat them so by not showing to me the most important is the eating
Well I did take them home and ate them, but I do get where you’re coming from mate. I’ll definitely look into a catch, clean cook next time I film a video mate 👍 thanks for the comment mate.
Since when have you wanted something legal?
😂😂🤫
