@Premier_lawns_official it just goes to show how open a rye sward can be this time of year. It isn't especially dense and I have found the same on my lawn. One side is fescue with a bit of bent (new), the other rye fescue which has a fair bit of yellowing and a bit of dieback with all the wet weather. Heavy soils have definitely done worse. It would be nice to have Richard back again.

Yet every spring I'm left with large bare patches and thin grass. Every year I either dig it all up and start again or scalp the lawn, verticut and then re seed and top dress. It comes up lovely every year and it's pretty soul destroying having to go through all that again! I use a ryegrass with a 20% fescue from The Grass People. Any tips would be very welcome? Ta

Using a garden fork. As he wiggles the fork back and forth he's creating compaction. Yes, he's making a hole in the grass for light and nutrients etc. But he's simultaneously compacting the soil also. Maybe not so great advice from a " lawncare superstar" ?

    • @Premier_lawns_official

Great question, once you use a garden fork and it's in the ground give it a wiggle and this creates fishers in the soil
It replicates what a verti drainer does.

Why bother ? I turned my lawn into a meadow , no hassle , cut at the back end and remove grass etc and leave ! Result , wonderful wild flowers and more wildlife you can shake a stick at ! No expense !

Around here, the people that don’t maintain their lawns only use that extra time they gain to sit in front of their televisions eating potato chips. What do you do with the time supposedly saved from not mowing? How do you lay in your meadow without all your abundant insects attacking you? Where do you play kickball with your kids? What do you do to combat the invasive species that will inevitably creep in and take over your wildflowers?
I have nothing against reducing turf grass areas (especially those that fail to properly maintain or utilize them), however, for these who do prefer a nice, manicured lawn, there is nothing wrong with them either.

Fantastic idea to turn it into a meadow, I intend to do that with some of my garden. I definitely will be keeping some grass though and I think I speak for everyone watching this when i say I’m here to find out how to keep my lawn in good nick. Your comment adds no value here, live and let live these lads are giving away their tips and tricks for free.

Why in the world would anyone want perennial ryegrass ? It appears to be one of the weakest.
