Measure twice...and measure again!!...Aaron I can’t think of another company that would do anything like this video...my hat off to everyone over at Warmoth....fair play indeed!!!!
exactly what I did. Gotoh clearly makes better parts and hopefully they can come out with their own version of the locking saddles in the future so we can just get a 510 with them.
The compact is for Charvel's (etc.) with slightly recessed trems, thus the shorter depth. Wilkinson makes a non-compact version for non-recessed bodies
Ahh....good to know. I tried switching the block with the 510, but they were not interchangeable. Maybe I will try to order the longer block from Wilkinson.
Hi Aaron, Other options are Wilkinson WLS130/S Locking Steel Saddles which can retrofit the saddles on the Gotoh 510. In terms of the Wilkinson WVS1302P you have the WVS1302P Compact which is a modified version of the Standard WVS1302P Vibrato, and is designed to fit specifically on Charvel “Dinky” Style guitars with bridge recesses, and shorter body depth. I have Wilkinson WVS1302P standard and it has no problem in the Warmoth 510 body rout although you do need to use the studs as you mention in your video.
Trevs Locking saddles are amazing, had them in my strat for over 2 years now and they work just as well as a floyd system when used in conjunction with locking tuners too.
Thanks Aaron for this upload. As usual, manufacturers are producing so many different standards that most are incompatible with one's stuff. The "sound of failure" is a real hit: someone should make a record with it...! 😆🎸😝😵 "The WVS1302P Compact is a modified version of our Standard WVS1302P Vibrato, and is designed to fit specifically on Charvel “Dinky” Style guitars with bridge recesses, and shorter body depth" Personally, I am into a vintage trip right now, and I am sticking to my old 6 screw traditional trem. 😁🙄
You guys are actually building me a 1-piece ash body for the Schaller bridge. I had the same issue attempting to swap it with a fender 2 point trem. Spike hooked me up 🤙
I'm starting my first bass build but I'm watching all of the Warmoth videos. I really appreciate the information. Plus Aaron is great! I really dig his laid back style.
I just ordered my first Warmoth body and neck the other day. If this build goes well I’ll definitely buy another body and neck. Can you possibly do a top mount Floyd Rose video? I really want a Floyd Rose in one of my guitars, but I don’t want to deal with a floating bridge. Thanks 😊
You can always use an L shaped backstop like the one from Fu Tone or Floyd Rose, improves tone as well. Works on both recessed and non-recessed mounts.
This was unbelievably helpful! I have a Gotoh 510 on my Charvel. Thankfully Wilkinison now lets you buy just the locking saddles which seem like a drop-in replacement.
When you look at the price difference in doing this, it actually makes more sense to buy the 510 along with the mounting studs installed, and then simply buy the locking saddles separately. Installation is not that hard.
The Devil is in the details. I just had to order another Wilkensen Trem. I got the string spacing right, but the screw holes didn't match up to the predrilled vintage spec strat screw holes of 55.5 mm. The trem I got was 57 mm. Wilkensen does make one, so I had to order it. These are worth the aggravation, best trems you can buy.
The unusual short specs of that bridge block aside, would you consider doing a video on essentially a little measuring course, on how to swap such bridges from one to another on the same body, like for instance those wilkinson bridges. There are so many details that should be regarded when upgrading a tremolo bridge, but few videos that explain which measurements should be done and how they should be done. I bet there are lots of viewers who want to educate themselves and dont necessarily shy away from using woodworking tools to accomplish such a task.
Hi to Aaron, and all you guys following the videos that Warmoth produce for their superb products. Being part of the Wilkinson team I can clear up any confusion people may have regarding our anniversary vibrato range. In the range we currently have two vibrato units which are the; WVS130/2P Standard version. WVS130/2PC Compact version. Both units are 56mm across centres with a 10.8mm string spacing. The block on the Compact version is shorter and the top plate is also smaller, this is designed purely for Charvel model guitars that are routed around the vibrato on the front of the guitar, and are also routed at the rear so the plate is level with the body rear. In answer to the comment about Gotoh being are sole manufacturer this is not the case. The fact is that we utilise a small number of high quality bridge and component manufacturers to create our hardware, and like other leading guitar brands we have a selection of ranges at different price point to suit the individual customer. As noted by many of the comments, Wilkinson also produce a range of locking saddles that will fit many bridges/vibratos that are part of the Anniversary range, these are denoted; WLS130/S Standard versions which will fit many vibratos on the market. WLS130/P PRS style, designed to fit the PRS vibrato. WLS130/F Fender offset screw style, designed to fit the 2 pivot fender vibrato with offset intonation screws (right hand only) If anyone does have further questions then please feel free to contact me @ rick@wilkinsondirect.com
It’s crazy that they changed the studs on this and you’re honestly better off with the 510 studs. The 1310 studs are obviously non-locking, which explains how they’re able to be smaller in diameter. Locking studs are a huge improvement for tuning stability.
I found out the hard way last year that the posts were not compatible but that was an easy fix as you said. I was able to get a Wilkinson 1302 with the full length block from their Reverb store last year so the rest of the install worked fine for me. If you contact Wilkinson on Reverb, (Trev's daughter runs the store) I bet she will send you a replacement (longer) block.
@@fusionid it fits it, but there’s a noticeable gap on the back end. It’s totally possible to make a custom rout that eliminates that gap and makes it look more natural.
I made a decision to avoid locking trems but this video has sealed the fate for any kind of trems for me. It's hard tail all the way for me from now on.
Well, I hope that You will make another video like this, but without the FAIL word in the title! A lot of us are very interested in that bridge as far as the tuning stability and sound goes! Pretty please!
Could you fit the wilkinson 1302 saddles on to the gotoh 510 bridge plate??? I like the saddles being able to lock the strings and I have a guitar with the stock 510 bridge.... Let me know if you can please.... As always, thank you for great content! Cheers!
VS100N is shown as 28.4x2 = 56.8mm on gotoh's site. I believe they are showing how far you can go with the stud centers; not sure tbh but the right stud is not in the center of the marking. Either specs have changed or you are putting your studs too narrow and not landing them in a more general spot as you said the stud spacing Warmoth uses is 54.5mm. Not sure where you are getting that from. From gotoh's dwg I'd guess you are landing your studs in the center of the markings, but that's not what they are showing on the dwg. Great vid though, appreciate the shorter block info you highlighted!
Aaron thanks for the info on the Wilkinson 1302. For the uninitiated like me will the 1302 fit in the Fender American standard route? I'm not talking about the block depth but just the overall route and the post spacing? Thanks
with a block that short, would these be potentially compatible with mustang bodies? never been a fan of the fender dynamic vibrato, so this could be a nice alternative routing...
Hi can you do the 'new' Gotoh 510 'narrow spacing left handed' they sell it now, I've been hassling them for 8 years about it XD finally it's an option, just checking if you can supply or route for it thanks! The narrow spacing is good for preventing strings falling off the fingerboard sides since Warmoth necks are not so wide at the pocket.
I replaced the bridge from my Fender strat to Gotoh NS510 which is "narrow spacing" type, and I'm so happy with the result! 510 and NS510 are compatible. I hope Warmoth will be able to sell it.
Love Wilkinson products.. I have several guitars with his pups. My two favorites are ez lock tuners. And my Fret King Supermatic. Neither trem nor hardtail. It's a robot tuner with 6 preset tunings
Is it's hole carved to move it both ways? Hope You'll do a video about how it plays. I'm planning my next Regal with semi recessed Wilkinson tremolo with locking tuners of course. But I'm not sure about the nut material.
Very cool looking guitar, love the humbuckers and maple neck and body colors. I think I would of had to made it without the pickguard because body looks that good.
Hey there Aaron! Hope you're doing well buddy. Hey I just wanted to let you know Wilkinson makes locking saddles specifically to fit in the Gotoh 510. Matter of fact I just bought a set for the Warmoth build I am waiting on..
I've done that in a 6-screw (vintage-spaced) Warmoth body. Fits great! It's a forgiving bridge design and would also fit in a narrow spaced MIM body. Trem action is a bit stiff, though, but it's stable and sounds great.
Just wondering, will a Wilkinson VS100 fit into the Gotoh 510 routing? I have a Schecter Nick Johnston strat with a Schecter import Gotoh 510 style tremolo but I'd like to replace it with a VS100.
Maybe. The VS100 has a blade edge on one side (rather than a "divot"), so it's not quite as picky about stud spacing. If you try it, let us know how it goes.
...why didn't you just swap the saddles on the Gotoh 510 that was on your guitar? Easy fix. Trev Wilkinson has a great relationship with the folks at Gotoh..SO WHY DIDN'T HE JUST PUT HIS LOCKING SADDLES ON A GOTH 510 TREMOLO - SO WE WOULD'T HAVE THESE PROBLEMS ???
Got to love when manufacturers change specs just enough to make parts incompatible 😄 Great video Aaron, I was wondering about the 510 and 1302 bridges.
A very informative video. Thank you. The post slots on the 1302 appear smaller than those on the 510. Were you able to fit the 1302 into the 510 posts without issue, or did you have to widen the slots?
Are they even possible to source? I think Trev might have a slight case of "demand outstripping supply". Edit: Yes, the Compact (P) versions are available, not the other style.
Knowledgeable reps that step up at the time of ordering to help us navigate thru all these compatibility issues would give me a ton of confidence as a customer. Does anyone at Warmoth look for this before ordered are run when different parts are ordered at the same time?
We look for obvious compatibility issues and advise where we can. However, there is a near--infinite number of parts and manufacturers out there, with specs and dimensions constantly changing, new products coming to market, others being discontinued, etc., so it's impossible for anyone to keep track of it all. It's also really impossible for us to know how each person intends to use our parts, so the ultimate responsibility for compatibility lies with the end user. If you watch both videos in this 1302 test you can see how much work went into figuring out the compatibility of one bridge....which we don't even sell!
I find the locking screws are a bad design. The rounded head makes it necessary to use a too small Allen key, so they will wear out quick and be a pain. If they had used square shoulders on the heads, they could have used a larger diameter Allen key that is more common, have a deeper hole and longer lifespan. I hope the screws will get an update in the future, or someone will release a retrofit screw ;-)
Unfortunately you used the Wilkinson specifically made for Charvel guitars. The regular version is a perfect swap for the 510 and will not give you any trouble.
I know no one in their right mind would buy a bridge and then not use its included base plate, but couldn't you have just changed the saddles out (leaving the existing base plate and block) in order to try out the new locking saddles?
Everyone needs to understand that Warmoth does not, nor have they ever (for at least 20 years), machine the pocket for the studs of the Gotoh Wilkinson VS100N correctly. The low E side position is correct, but the high E side is shifted inward. I have my theories about why they do this (my guess is to appeal to having the high E stud appear centered in the knife edge). This has been true for at least 20 years, because I have a Warmoth strat body from 2000 with this incorrect spacing (I have since CNC machined it out, doweled it, and remachined the pocket in the correct position). Over the years many folks have reported this anomaly. I believe it is true today. From a design point of view, the standard Fender, the Gotoh 510, and the Wilkinson VS100N all share the same stud spacing - as does the new 1302. Is is *only Warmoth* and then *only with the VS100N* where the spacing doesn't conform, and then *only on the high E side.* If you want a Warmoth body to conform to standard fender spacing, ordering the body for the Gotoh 510 will be correct - and it will still work perfectly with the VS100N.
I believe you are right. These various routs could be consolidated into one rout that worked for all. Our current offering makes more sense when you understand the order in which these routs were programmed. Back in the olden days all that Warmoth carried was the Fender American and the VS100. Having a specific rout for each bridge made sense, and I imagine Ken did exactly what you guess: positioned the high E post in the center of the VS100's blade. Later came the 510, and now even more later comes the 1320, and we have ended up with a whole gaggle of bridges that could all potentially share a common rout. The rub is that consolidating all these routs would require quite a lot of R&D and expense. We can't just assume they all work....we have to know for sure, which means building a whole mess of bodies, installing all the bridges in each one, etc, etc, etc. Hopefully at some point we will have time to do that, but unfortunately we don't right now. That's why we do our best to education customers about our existing options with videos like this one. Hope that makes sense.
@@warmoth I can totally believe this. 20+ years ago, CNC programs were mostly written by hand. Even when CAM was used it was often just for contours and surfaces whose code was massaged by hand into what was otherwise hand originated code. That's the era I grew up in and you would be surprised how many manufacturing outfits still operate this way. As you say, consolidating anything at this point requires a lot of cost in terms of confirmation and assurance that the edits are correct. No small feat, especially when you have a business to run and orders to fill. If Warmoth were starting from scratch today, all of these things would likely start in CAD models and all CAM code would be tied to them - updating models would automatically update the tool path, so this step wouldn't exist (or at least wouldn't be fraught with risk). But alas that's for the new starts, not the existing businesses. I should come work for you. I love your company. Warmoth stuff is as good or better than anything else on the planet, and the customizability of it all fits my sentiments perfectly.
The industry needs to standardize on the post spacing. The new squier affinity has 63mm post spacing. Guess what trem is the right one to upgrade to? (wvs50K) Fender strats have three different post spacings and at least three different string spacings. I don't mind having different string spacing but the post spacing can be just one. How about floyd rose post spacing? You've guessed it, 74mm. How about ibanez rg350? 77mm, and on and on. You get a headache just to keep track of this all.
As I mentioned in the video, Wilkinson is offering this bridge with at least two different plates and two different blocks. Which one should we do the R&D for? Is this design "settled" now, or will there be further changes? Is there enough demand to justify the R&D cost? Is it even worth it if the 510 rout already works? Things we ponder.
Measure twice...and measure again!!...Aaron I can’t think of another company that would do anything like this video...my hat off to everyone over at Warmoth....fair play indeed!!!!
Even though this doesn't apply to me I so appreciate that specific info like this is made available. Thanks, Aaron! 👍🏼✌️

Are they even possible to source? I think Trev might have a slight case of "demand outstripping supply".
Edit:
Yes, the Compact (P) versions are available, not the other style.
Cool video!
this is exactly why if i ever get a body from you guys i'll just pay you for the bridge at the same time :D
The "Compact" model has a shorter block, so If you have the standard WVS130-2P, the Gotoh route should be fine.
is that tele inthe back a baritone?
Yep. More about it here: ua-cam.com/video/0PvUMPq5pds/v-deo.html
@@warmoth thank you
Nice!
Maybe the “compact” refers to short block and not small baseplate.
Could be. I will have to check with them. I tried switching the block with the 510, but they were not interchangeable unfortunately.
@@warmoth I struggled to find any info online on it. It’s very strange.
Thanks for doing this.
As did I. I spent the $300 so you wouldn't have to! :)
If I order a guitar from you: can I request that your master painter Stephen put thier autograph on the back of the head stock?
I find the locking screws are a bad design. The rounded head makes it necessary to use a too small Allen key, so they will wear out quick and be a pain. If they had used square shoulders on the heads, they could have used a larger diameter Allen key that is more common, have a deeper hole and longer lifespan. I hope the screws will get an update in the future, or someone will release a retrofit screw ;-)
Even though I was not able to play-test the 1302 in the video, I at least got to string it up, and had similar concerns as you do.
Sick shirt too
are the blocks interchangeable too?
No, they are not. The screw hole locations are slightly different.
Boutique? Oui. Beauxtique? Non. ❤️
Interesting topic, and nice shirt change ;)
Lol, yeah, when he said "I'll be back in a moment" I thought "he's going to be in a different t-shirt".
Haha....there used to be a time when I would try to dress the same on shoot days for continuity. These days I'm like...ain't nobody got time for that.
Unfortunately you used the Wilkinson specifically made for Charvel guitars. The regular version is a perfect swap for the 510 and will not give you any trouble.
I love you dude, i just do!!
I know no one in their right mind would buy a bridge and then not use its included base plate, but couldn't you have just changed the saddles out (leaving the existing base plate and block) in order to try out the new locking saddles?
Ha ha, the vs100 used to be made out of pot metal, had it tested, wonder if they still are.
Is is *only Warmoth* and then *only with the VS100N* where the spacing doesn't conform, and then *only on the high E side.*
If you want a Warmoth body to conform to standard fender spacing, ordering the body for the Gotoh 510 will be correct - and it will still work perfectly with the VS100N.
Why doesn't Warmoth just add that specific rout?
As I mentioned in the video, Wilkinson is offering this bridge with at least two different plates and two different blocks. Which one should we do the R&D for? Is this design "settled" now, or will there be further changes? Is there enough demand to justify the R&D cost? Is it even worth it if the 510 rout already works? Things we ponder.
@@warmoth Got it. Thanks.
I have this tremolo on my Suhr
And no problem
Ah, ye old screen door springs. It's fine, distortion fixes everything.
So basically what you’re saying is, if you have to get a bridge for a Strat it’s a complete guessing game
smaller base plate, smaller block, shorter and narrower studs....hmmmm..seems like the only advantage to the 1302 is the massive saddles....
you can buy a Gotoh 510 and the WLS130 saddles for less that what they sell the this trem for
