Love my 2000 7.3... She's got the best of all of the Power Strokes... No emissions, strait piped and sounds great! Just take care of the dang truck and that 7'3 will last... Mine's 20 years and counting!
2001 7.3 here. Got rid of the dual mass clutch 5 years ago(manual trans). 160,000 miles ONLY-extreme amount of idle time though living in the truck over the years. Turbo bearing just went out today....I think the low oil pressure and no start was from the oil pump pickup/suction trying to suck up that piece of the broken piston. Why it broke off? Manufacturing defect.
I'm glad to see y'all still working on 7.3's. I really don't want anyone but Mikey working on mine. I love the fact that it perplexes him that he can't figure out what happened with this engine. He'll be thinking about this until he figures it out, and that's what makes an excellent mechanic - problem solving.
@moe raff That's great to hear, my 2000 7.3 has 203,000 miles and it has the same everything to except for the water pump, I've changed it only once. And for the camshaft position sensor that was fine until ford recalled it and ever since it goes out every two years, lol, but this last one has lasted longer than 3 years now. I'll keep her til she can't run no more. Lol 😆. 👍👍
Someome took good care of their maintenance from an oil and fuel side. Very nice job on cleaning that motor. I can see why you folks are as renowned as you are. Taking the time to do the detail work of cleaning, most guys just throw that grease ball back in there
Oh but when has this problem happened on the 6.7 powerstroke 🤔🤔🤔🤔. The 7.3 ran for 8 in a half years lol. The 6.7 has been around 9 years now. The longest running ford diesel in history
What the heck??? I thought you didn't work on those dinosaurs anymore?? Love those 7.3s. You can pry mine from my cold dead hands. 7.3, 6 speed, Crew cab Long bed, F350
They still fix them. But they're not problematic like the 6.0 and newer engines. With the 7.3 you're more likely to have a catastrophic transmission failure than a major engine failure assuming the truck was properly maintained.
Midnight Trumptrain I have a 96 7.3 533k mi.on it ,not bragging,I own a Ferrari,Shelby 350gt,,,sitting on 13k acres,I could buy any car I want ,I love my 96 and would never sell it,so I guess I must be poor
Gotta love the 7.3. She may not be shinny and new. But damn if she won't work hard, and for a long time for you. Just show her some love (change your damn oil), and she will love you for 100's of thousands of miles.
I have 2, 2000 F250 Crew cabs, 7.3's. One has 275K, the other has 340K. I know it is overboard, but they get new Shell Rotella and a new filter every 2000 miles. Knock on wood, the only thing engine wise that they have ever had done was replacing the valve cover/electrical connection gaskets. Have pulled D3 dozers on flat bed trailers with one of them, the other was used routinely to pull my 27' float with 14 round bales of hay before I bought a 2006 F450 for that job. Oil is King.
that's a serious question mark ,, especially when you said it yourself the guy took very good care of the engine ,,i love seeing a clean engine like that I just had a similar mysterious failure in a Cummins 8.3 in my RV pulling truck ,,turned out to be a cracked piston ,was making a tapping noise when hot of course i went ahead and went through the motor cause it's got 450,000 miles on it ,,being a wet sleeve engine was easier to just replace the sleeves and pistons ,and install new bearings ,,truck was back in service with a brand new engine in 2 days ,,and i drove it 400 miles on tuesday
We rebuilt a Waukesha diesel inline 6 in a Coast Guard tug, the liner ridge let go after our rebuild, the liner dropped on the crank, "All done", just a casting issue with a factory liner, bet this 7.3 had a catastrophic piston casting issue. I have a mint 2001 Excursion 7.3 with 102k & treasure it, runs and looks new! Thanks for a great video like always!
Mikey talks too much. Just kidding, love you both. My 7.3 01 tpye has 324k and runs great. First vid I watched of yours was the $5 rad cap. I have followed you and TechRon "RiP" for about 4 yrs. Keep it up boys!
Sometimes it just happens. Had a 250K mile old, 2.3L 90's Mustang that broke a single piston skirt for no apparent reason. Bought it new, always maintained and never abused (not that you could really abuse a 100hp Lima 2.3L). It knocked and rattled a bit, but went another 25K miles before I put a new short block in and sold her off.
Use to have issues like this with a few of my fleet trucks, actually learned if you park them facing down hill theres no issue starting it. Parking on flat or up hill, if you start it high idle the truck to keep it from shutting off. It might not be the best, but it can and will keep you going until you have the time, or money, to get the job done.
I've got an 02 7.3 and hope mine is that clean. I do my oil changes so fingers crossed. Your focus seeking camera is ruining your great informative videos. 👍
I'd go w/casting defect, seems like the most logical explanation. Someone also could have droped it during assembly, and it landed just rt to cause a hairline no one saw.
I'm a firm believer in climate change. That being, said, you need to look at the total carbon foot print of a vehicle. Yes, these pollute more. But, how much greenhouse gasses/pollution/toxic chemicals/etc. would have been released if the owner had decided to get rid of it and bought a new one? How much resources would have been used between the iron ore in the ground to the truck in the showroom? And, not just the vehicle itself but the secondary sources, (electricity production, heating the various production facilities/warehouses, etc.). So, before you start hugging trees, make sure you have the total picture.
UPS bought tons of the 7.3 and probably the best motor they ever had the only problem was the rebuilders they chose were poor. Some motors came back just painted and would fail within 10000 miles.
I know this won't help much, but a couple of years ago I did an 01 7.3 with maybe 200k ish miles. Nearly identical except that the lpop hadn't been damaged enough to lose prime. That being said, I found the issue attempting a dipstick repair with engine in. Found much more than the o-ring in the oil pan. Lost one skirt and one squirter both on the same cylinder. Looked like it may have run that way for many many miles. My best guess; possibly cold start abuse type of shenanigans. Maybe even ether related.

I understand that a lot of labor was involved in this repair due to the extensiveness of this repair. The million dollar question (maybe not a million)… how much was this repair job?
I’m stumped too , have a 2 stroke out board that had half a rod bearing fail , ring end gap is in spec , no idea why one bearing failed , the cap of the rod is perfect and other that pieces of rod rollerbaearings going though the motor , and even with that the bore isn’t trashed or the crank
Only thing I can think of is the boss drilled for one of the nozzles was not quite tight enough and it got loose. At that point it would easily take the adjacent one out and probably a chunk of the skirt with it.
From what i can tell from the video, it definitely doesn't look like a material failure / fatigue. It looks like the skirt has been broken off forcefully. Are there any way the squirters can loosen, and rotate/move into the path of the skirt, causing them both to break off? That would be my explanation anyway.
I believe It was rebuilt by an idiot who let the crank fall with a piston down too far.. I've seen the same thing in some small block 400 builds that come into the shop over low oil pressure
I think he said no more 7.3s because people were bringing them in for a diagnostic and then getting annoyed when it cost a good chunk of money to sort them out. It ended up wasting his time when he could make good money with the 6.0s.
I belive that engine is that clean. I'm pushing almost 400k knock on wood do all the maintenence. I've had the valve covers off and you could eat a Sunday dinner off it. Maintenance maintenance is the key. But to quote my mech when it goes in for an over my head project.... “she's got the usual leaks we aint gonna worry about that" lmao!!!! I have found three different trucks with oil squirters that come out when changing the oil I believe they get fatigued and crack off overtime I replace all of them when we go in to fix them there is a very little room between the piston skirt and squirter it probably got caught between the crank and piston and broke off the skirt

Most Great Mechanics will always try to find the reason for a failure, If not the vehicle will just break down again and now you are working for free!
I’ve learned over the years never say never on doing something cause when the work slows down you always have to have a back up plan.

Question???????
Is it possible that the oil squirter came loose was able to move & the piston hit the squirter causing the piston to break....
