Why did Michael Schumacher Drive a GP2 Car? (it's not what you think)

Michael Schumacher initially retired at the end of the 2006 season. Four years later, and he would be back! Not in red, but in grey.
He prepared for his return in a GP2 car, but why? & if this car was good enough for a 7 time world champion, why didn’t other returning champions follow his lead?

What Michael archived as a Mercedes driver was the Build up of the dominating Car Mercedes would be known for. Together with Lauda they set up everything for the future.
