Yeah I love that. I once saw a UA-camr (with waaaay fewer subscribers than this guy) reply to someone's comment about his long, rambling video that the UA-cam advertising system promotes and encourages content creators to make longer videos. Because of that he said he was never going to shorten his videos and remove all the fluff. Nice to see that some people make content that they think people will actually enjoy.
Grown ginger last year in a 2 X 4 foot raised bed. Planted about 8 rhizome pieces. I now have more ginger than I know what to do with. Given a lot of it away, but still have probably 20 lbs still in the ground. Very easy to grow here in Georgia. Lots of water, well draining soil, and shade from the hot summer sun. Good luck to everyone.
I'm like that with the turmeric grow. I pulled 36 pounds in February 2022 and I was my first year to grow it I'm hoping that this ginger grows for me. I tried last year and it never came up above the soil.
I raised ginger from the store this last year. Planted 4 smaller fingers in May, ended up with 5 pounds in December. Dried and fresh. Pickling next year
Right on! I finally found your channel man. Out of the different gardeners on here, you are very direct, to the point every time and knowledgeable. Thank you for sharing your green thumb! Happy planting
I bought an organic ginger just for planting and am ready to go! I was going to opt for just putting it in soil, but after watching this, I think I'll do the water method. I live in the Rocky Mountains so it will be nice not to have to have a pot of dirt sitting around for awhile, lol. Thank you!
I learn and grow as a beginner gardener from almost every video of yours I've watched. Thanks for sharing and blessing my garden with your like button cultivation!
Thank you for showing me how to grow ginger. I would not have thought of breaking off the root mass and of separating the plants. You did a good thing.
You did a fantastic job explaining this. I’m on my way to the fridge to get my ginger to start the process. Thank you very much for the information/growing advice!
I am currently growing my ginger (from store bought rhyzomes) entirely indoors, just in pots with no extraordinary care. I keep the soil moist but not too moist as it will rot. The growth seems to be cyclical. Sometimes I can see new shoots (like right now) and sometimes it seems to die back. Last time it died back, I decided that was it and started to dig everything up and out when I unearthed some new little shoots that were green and just starting to grow. OOPS! I carefully put the little shoots back in the pot and they are doing nicely now. When we stayed at a VRBO in Costa Rica, the yard had ginger and lemon grass growing and we dug up a little of each every day for suppers. I like keeping my tall ginger on a table at my front picture window and looking through it like I'm in the jungle, the mighty jungle. 😆❤️👍🏻🌱🌱🌱 Oh. And I have lemongrass growing in a pot that I grew from store bought lemongrass. The lemongrass seems to be a bit slower to create new plants than the ginger.
One thing to keep in mind is that the edible part of the ginger plant is a rhizome, not a tuber or a root. Rhizomes grow best only partially buried, or buried very shallowly.
This looks amazing, and you got right to the point without 1-2 minutes of useless intro. Bravo! Questions: (1) While the ginger is in the water, what temperature should it be? I read that 77F is an ideal soil temperature for ginger, so I'm keeping the water at that temp. (2) While the ginger is in the water, does it need darkness? Ambient light? A lot of light like a grow light? Maybe it needs a lot of light but only after it sprouts? Thanks again for a great video!
Just watched this amazingly informative video and have my ginger now in water to sprout and hopefully grow in a month or so! Thank you! I’m subscribed and looking at all your videos!
Things such as pearl of wisdom (at least in thinking it is by the comments) because organic ginger in the grocery store is PRICEY. Can’t wait to try this right now ❤
This should be fun, I actually bought some ginger to eat with or in something else and the remainder started sprouting so I watched this video and I’ll be planting it in the next few days.
Sorry if the question has already been asked. How long does it usually take for them to take root in the water? I've had mine in water for a few weeks now, but no major root system showing.. Thanks!!
I have that question too. Also in light, indirect or direct? His roots looked to have had a bit of dirt on them and at the end we quickly see a shallow plastic container so guessing more to the story.
What temperature should the water be at, how long & what type of light? A lot of us would like to know. I’ve read lots of comments & haven’t found an answer. TY
Humid weather, wrap your whole ginger in a plastic freezer bag add a couple drops of water leave it loosely tied up and near sunlight not direct so it can get humid. After a couple of weeks 3 max you'll see the little root nodes growing :) 🫚
I bought some ginger from the store it’s been sittingbb by on the counter for a week or so now I noticed it’s starting to sprout. I was thinking of putting no wet paper towel into a Ziploc and throw them in there and see what happens. Leave them on the counter.🤷🏽♂️
Great vid. I never had much success with the water method. I definitely soak for 1-2 days... But I do the nursery tray with seedling mix on heat... The sprouting speed is astonishing. As fast canna roots! Cheers.
@@epicgardening that's beneficial for people to know. If your Ginger is going weeks without sprouting either eyes/shoots or new white roots, something is amiss. Moisture, too cold, bulbs too old and dry, etc. It's a really quick process surprisingly!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thank you for this. I am such a newbie to gardening and it suckkkksssssss its hard. Im trying this but I ordered nursery trays and seedlings fingers crossed.

Bro... seriously.. the 1st 1.34 minutes of this video is all I needed.. THANK YOU... I just bought a large bag of 50% off ginger from the store... I wanted to know what to do with it.........you said put it in a shallow bowl with water.. so that is what I am doing!@! Thanks brio
I’m growing ginger from a stock that I brought from the store. I have a lot of growth and don’t know how to harvest it to use and to plant new growth. It’s growing in a tea cup plant and I’m so proud with my purple thumb.
I live in central NY. I can’t wait to try growing ginger. Is our growing season long enough to grow it? When should it be planted? How long does it take to get good size rhizomes (do small ones taste better than larger?) Do I plant it in the sun? Partial shade? Hopefully if you reply directly to my comment I’ll get a notification?? If not, can you put the answers to my questions here in the chat. Thanks so much. This is my first time watching this channel. I do like that it’s direct, but a little more info about the questions I raised would be great.
Ok, not trying to be critical (because this guy is amazing!) but to say that ginger is "pretty delicious" is the BIGGEST UNDERSTATEMENT! Ginger is a mix of happiness, citrus and exotic spice. It is the royal queen to King Garlic. The world would be a sad and lonely place without ginger. (p.s. thanks to Epic Gardening for teaching the world how to propagate this incredible plant!) :)
I had a turmeric plant. It had beautiful huge leaves. It was growing so well. But unfortunately, I had to leave it before I could see its blooms. We had to move to the US, but when I go back home, I will plant another one!
Lol. I bought a huge bag of ginger on clearance for like 2 dollars, forgot about it for like a month and I already have ginger eyes on the ginger itself. Just plunked it into some water. Hoping for the best

Failed 3 times in West TN. Once in an above ground little plot and twice in two tubs. It must not like that much water, because all 3 rotted.

Nice! If you're growing indoors they might just be developing slower because they prefer quite a bit of sun!
Did you ever grow celantro from store bought
Do you have cats? Will they bother indoor ginger plants?
Can you grow it in the UK in a polytunnel or will it rot?
Alison Gilbert i am growing mine entirely inside cuz i live in zone 3a, 3b. winters might be mild enough to grow it outside in a polytunnel?
One thing to keep in mind is that the edible part of the ginger plant is a rhizome, not a tuber or a root. Rhizomes grow best only partially buried, or buried very shallowly.
