I started some store bought ginger and decided to plant it because it was on sale. That was December and now it’s 2’ high. I used a heat mat I purchased and it’s still on. I water it twice a week. It’s in a 3 gallon pot. It’s thriving in a wood stove environment and it’s been cold. It only gets afternoon sun. I’m hoping to move it to a non heated green house in a few weeks. Great video BTW. Thank you!! Didn’t realize it needed heat in the 80’s! I take my ginger root, grind it in a small coffee grinder and save it in a quart size freezer baggie and flattened it. Then when I go out biking with my water bottle, I snap off a small frozen chunk of the ginger root and add it to the water. It makes water tastes incredible.
Love the way you speak slow and make yourself understood. I will try ginger your way thank you
Thanks adele, much love! Do try Ginger if it's warm enough... Really cool plant to grow!
My daughter and I found your intonation appealing. We caught ourselves doing it too. Don't change a thing and keep being you!
Thanks Isagani! You rock! Thanks for the support!!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thanks. Have you tried lemons before?
@@isaganimejia4660 Like a lemon tree? Citrus is a tough go here ...just too cold in the winter. But it can be done indoors. Limes too!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms found an almost rotten lemon this morning and got 5 seeds that have potential. Wrapped them around a damped paper towel and put it in a ziplock. Now I'll see if these will germinate. Thanks for inspiring a lot of people to be productive during this pandemic!
@@isaganimejia4660 right on! I think you can do the same thing with Apple seeds as well!
Thank you so much for your videos, I love that you post the progress, that confirms that your method really works and encourages me to get into gardening more confident, I live in Houston and climate here is extreme and humid. Thanks for your advice.
Thanks so much Monica! I'm glad you noticed that. I'm trying to make almost every video a series... An ongoing documentation of the subject matter.. That way when it's all said and done, anyone can follow it with the same success... Even my kids when they grow up... And especially senile me when I start forgetting everything I learned along the way!
R U kidding me 😳You made my day, year, everything 😅 So happy, thank you from Sweden 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺
Right on Nattan, best of luck growing some if you try! :-)
Its not too late to get this Ginger going indoors. It sprouts quite quickly, and for a few pennies, you could get these guys EASILY larger than the starter plants you'd find at the nurseries or garden centers this spring. Heat, water, and a suitable medium and you'll be swimming in Ginger sprouts in quick order!
@@SavedbyGraceCT Ginger can really be harvest at any time...however for maximum yield, ideally they'd be left until the end of summer and dug up, much like potatoes are. Cheers, happy growing!
You mentioned something about selling at a farmer's market? When you get the plant started, approx. how long does it take to get enough root rhizome to actually get some major divisions from it? Have you grown it long enough to find out?
@@SavedbyGraceCT he mentioned temperature is key. Grow that sucker indoors to monitor the temperature. I’m going to put mine on a small incandescent light to Monitor the temperature
@@bbikermama
It looks like he is putting the tray on some kind of heating mat?
I have tryed planting ginger sooo many times, and failed..this video answered all my questions..best video out there..good job..thank you
I love ginger. I need to grow my own. Thank you 😊 I live in the Uk so I may try indoors as I don’t have a greenhouse.
Planted the ginger root just as you said and I have 2 huge shoots! Now moving to plant pot - and eventually outside. Great video thank you :)
Best video on growing ginger that I have come across. I took notes. I have some ginger that I have grown from store bought, but it was more or less a 'cross my fingers' project. I over winter them indoors since I live in zone 4. I decided to subscribe just on this video. Will be checking some more since I noticed you are growing other things from store bought fruits, in the back ground.
Wow, thanks Carmen! Much appreciated! Ginger should grow really really well for you. Keep it out of the wind if you can.
One of the best videos out there on this subject! I'm subscribing thank you!
Absolutely fantastic video man , i watched like 10 and this is by miles the best one
Thanks so much buddy.....much love!! I can't wait until the harvest videos at the end of summer!
I started my ginger in January in a shallow container and kept it moist after soaking it overnight. Finally after several months I had shoots. Now they are ready to be moved to deeper pots. I wished I had seen this video when I started because I did not know about keeping them warm. Great information and thank you for presenting it. Next video should be how to harvest it.
Thanks Lorelei! Next video at the end of summer is for sure all about the harvest! :-)
Winter doesn't mean gardening stops....in fact, you can kick it into high gear, much like the Ginger in this video! This winter, we've been adding to an entire series dedicated to indoor gardening. Check out the playlist if you'd be so kind. :-) ua-cam.com/play/PLiie7K8ZgA_JcXVxQO5y99HQvCFhz3GdC.html
@Alina McPherson you definitely can! That's a great set up. You can grow all kinds with that. And then in other spaces, pick plants that don't need crazy light requirements like microgreens and sprouts to round out your selection! Happy growing!
@Alina McPherson definitely! All winter long! They are like 10 day crops max! Sprouts even less! You could always be growing and harvesting no problem! So awesome!
Thank you for your patience, I will always pay attention to your video..
This is what I'm doing today. I bought ginger for the last time yesterday. 😄 Thanks!
Ha ha Awesome Heather! Once you get it going...endless supply!
First time follower and I must say great job explaining. Thank you
Thank you so much for this video. I can now grow ginger successfully. This is one of the best video, if not the best video of its kind. You gave great information, tips and awesome explanations. Wonderful video. Thank you, again.👏🏾👍🏽👏🏾👍🏽
Thanks Lonie! Much appreciated! Stay safe and happy growing.
thank from California you for this video. I like how clearly you explained everything!
Awesome, thanks for watching! :-)
Very good tutorial.
You are an excellent teacher...thank you.
Thanks Patrice, that's super appreciated! Have a great growing season this year!
Thank you very. much for sharing. I love Ginger, so will follow your guidance.
Right on almaz, glad to help!
Love it! Thank you so much! I'm starting my store bought ginger today!
So awesome! Let us know how it goes/grows for you!!
Great video. Thank you for sharing the whole process and showing the potting of the sprouted ginger. I appreciated your letting us know about the heating mat and soil temperatures. Again great a video. I enjoyed it. Plant on . . . . :o)
Super awesome, detailed, to the point video! You are perfect in explaining and giving points. I have already started my ginger roots, about 1 month and half ago: they do take a while to put on the "show!" and I could not be more proud! But I watched your video to make sure how to transplant it into another pot! And I got exactly the answer (and much more!) that I was looking for. I will start a couple more roots now, since they do take a while to sprout. Thanks again for everything!
Thank you, you explain the whole process articulately. I am dang this today. I live in Florida.
I'm sorry but I just have to. "There was this one time at band camp..." Great detailed, organized, and nicely shot video.
That is exactly what I just said, lol. I think he will overcome this and do great, though!
I subscribed and hope to look through your videos and get some great tips. Blessings to you my friend.
Thank you so much for this video I've always wanted to know how to grow ginger, God bless you and your family love from Wendy Drummond from Adelaide South Australia
Right on Wendy, thanks for the support! South Aussie you could probably grow Ginger outdoors year round I would think. As long as soil temps stay above 15C, you should be golden!
Great video. Would have loved some info on when the ginger is ready to harvest
It was great how well and thorough you explained the process. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Thanks for saying that! And thanks for watching!
Best teacher ever thank you so much for spreading your knowledge
Thanks so much for watching Kehara!
This is so informative! Thank you so much, I’m so excited to try this!!
Right on Jackie, thanks for watching! Happy growing!
🍅 Thank you for sharing your info! I love growing new things. I want to find & grow horseradish too. Enjoy your day! 🥦🍓🌶🍄
That would be great to try as well! Can't say that I ever have!
Cheers for the tips. As well as the crop, I like the plant itself. I just put my first ginger root in water : )
Right on! Let us know how it goes for you! Super cool. My main goal is to now learn how to properly dry it for fall/winter storage!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I will do. I need to get a better ginger root I reckon. With a big crop that would be essential. Definitely one thing I want to grow - great flavour (UK spelling) and really good for you.
@@thewannabegardener9660 For sure. I think if you can sprout it early and give it a huge head start, even the tiniest tuber will give you a big bounty by the end of summer!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms We are in lockdown here so trips out are few and far between, but next shopping trip I will get some fresh ginger and plant it. I subscribed when I watched your 'onions from onions' video, mine haven't put out new roots : ( maybe next time : )
@@thewannabegardener9660 I finally found some ginger today... The stores have been wiped clean of ginger for weeks... It's crazy out here..
Great video, I have just bought 1 ginger to start off on learning how to grow ginger. Thank you for sharing & take care 🙂
Awesome rain footage!!!
Snow! Well... Victoria snow.. Ha ha
This is the best video that I have seen for Ginger. Thank you
Hey Fina, thanks for that! Much appreciated!!
Is true!🍻 Happy Valentine's day
Jeff, thanks so much for the great videos. A couple of quick questions on this one. Do you pre-moisten the soil before laying the ginger on top? Pretty sure you do, just checking. And, do you continue to keep the soil misted throughout the process until they are potted up? Or, do you water from the bottom. Just set my ginger out to soak so I will be starting this soon. Thanks again from a fellow Canadian gardener.
Amazing explanation 👏easy to understand and follow nice as slow well done keep up the hardwork from 🇬🇧
Thanks Waheed, appreciate the support and kind words! :-)
Ur the best. Now I know what to do. Thx so much. Ginger👌

Excellent advice and wonderful video! I have grown it outside in a pot in the summer, but didn’t know I could do inside. Thanks! 😊
Thanks Cheri! :-)
Love lemon and ginger tea, and want to try this. I’m not sure on how/when to harvest from the plant though? Any advice appreciated x
Thanks Jayne.. Harvest Ginger when the foliage starts to fail... The leaves turn yellow/brown... Tell tale sign that tubers are ready!
Love your videos and the electronic music in the background.
such a lovely tutorial, so methodical, patient and calm. love it!!!! i think i will grow too.. we are in the UK and the weather is not as warm in the states. so will try on the window sill.. how long does it take for actual ginger to develop that you can harvest from the time you see the shoots? thank you so much for the video..
Thanks Seema, and thanks for watching! I grow it over the course of summer here in Canada and it takes about 3-4 months to grow a new set of rhizomes after I sprout it. Cheers!
Thank you for putting this video together! I had a few ginger bulbs laying around (bought in bulk) and didn’t want them to go to waste.
Best of luck! Once they get going and are sprouted it's quite an attractive plant too!
What a great video. thank you!
Thanks Mary! And thanks for watching!
Thank you for the excellent step-by-step guide. My ginger root is growing tall and healthy.
Found this very good, thank you
Hey Jennifer, thanks so much! :-)
Thanks for the video...I didnt get any sprouts last year. I saw your video and realized I was missing the heat. Root is sitting on a mat for about three days now. I appreciate the insight.
Awesome Michelle, glad to help! Heat and moisture really are the two key ingredients for getting these things to sprout every time. Best of luck!
